no otg port - General Questions and Answers

Hello.
My android tv box without micro usb port & sd card slot.
How to update

Maybe you need to insert a pin between the two USBs to get one of them communicating as a slave and thus being able to upgrade Android.
Be carefull though, it is just a suggestion ,it might damage the product.
Just my 2cts.

IF there is a update from the manufacturer there must be a guide. Have you just typed the model name into a search engine?

Host function for ASUS P525 ?

Hi,
First, I'm new around here, so hello everyone!
I've purchased a P525 which I should receive soon.
My question
According to this article, the P525 might qualify as being host capable, meaning one could plug some USB card reader into the P525 USB port and use whatever data stored on a CF or SD card for instance. For example, I have a card reader and a 8GB CF card filled with music would it be possible to use this data using the P525? Does anyone ever attempted to use some host function on a P525?
I've googled this topic in every way but found no one that ever mentioned this was tried on a P525...
Huh? No one ever tried if host function works on a P525 ??
OK then, an easy one : I've noticed some of you are using a 4GB minisd card on their P525. I know the device will not comply with SDHC standard, but what about regular minisd? What combination of brand (TOPRAM?) and ROM does this need to work?
MANY THANKS !!
P525 has no support for USB host. This is hardware limitation.

Thank you Ingvarr ! Well, I've asked because if you follow the link to the article in my first post, you would read this:
«Intel has built in USB Host functionality into the PXA27x series of chips»
But of course, if ASUS never implemented it ... that's way too bad - unless someone finds out it can be done using a software solution. I just hope I'll find the way to have a 4GB minisd card to work with the P525, because 2GB is just too short.
HERE
There's someone named Ingvarr (coincidence?) who designed a nice little program that can play host with a WM5 device.
Can't wait to try it on my P525 once I get it...
OUPS ! Sorry Ingvarr.. I've just realized your app is not meant for what I had in mind... Nice program though.

Storage Extension via USB?

hello everybody!
tried to find it in the forum, not sure whether somebody asked that before:
Is it possible to extend the storage of the diamond via some usb device? can you buy extensions like that? is it technically possible?
greetinx, kruemelmonzta
im sure it is technically possible. Would be nice wouldnt it? *sigh*
The Diamond doesn't have an internal USB Host, so it's not possible.
thanx for the quick answer though i'm not so content with that
can there be a bluetooth/wifi-solution for external storage? would eat loads of battery, for sure...

Diamond DOES have a internal USB host. The problem is that it is not supported by the software. But in the technical manual (available in the WIKI) there talk abou a Y cable for upgrading ROM.
There are some people working on this...
I've seen that adapter too. But that doesn't mean the Diamond's got USB host. It could be a very special HOST-Adapter, which of coz would need special drivers.
Where have you seen people talking about working on it?
Hi,
I remember reading an artical on engadget a while ago (few months) and it was about a mobile disk drive (2.5") with wifi/bluetooth access. So you can just browse the HDD from your phone/pocket pc.
I just found a link to the Item
http://www.trustedreviews.com/storage/news/2007/02/01/Seagate-Offers-Mobile-Bluetooth-Storage/p1
Looks cool and a very good option.
With shared network folder and WIFI I have no probs at all ... 1 Terabyte to my use.

so how does this work exactly? Because even I use remote desktop to log into my PC at home. But how can you, lets say play an album from your 1 Terabyte of storage. How can you view pics? How can you do these things on the fly without first remote desktop-ing into your PC, copying to your Diamond and run?
D.A.V.E. seems to be very interesting. you can't buy it yet, can you?

PC USB connectivity

Hello,
I have a HTC G1 and I couldn't get the windows recognize the device. Guess it needs a driver before I can install apps to test it on the phone. I was referred to this forum by someone in the Android Developers forum. Do you guys have any insight?
Thanks,

you have one? like sitting in front of you and you can touch it? and to answer question it doesnt sync with computer it syncs with google over the air...
Yes, it was right in front of me a few minutes go. It has gone for a walk around other cubes.
Won't you need to have some connectivity with the PC to use the ADB?
If by "ADB" you mean contacts, all that is sync'd with Google online. Nothing has really been said about connectivity with any desktop PCs yet.

I have developed an application using the emulator and now wanted to test on the device. How can I load it on the phone? Could you explain the process?
Thanks.
You already have a jump on most of us by actually *having* the phone. A micro-SD card would probably be your best bet.
I have one too, and am having the same USB connectivity problems. The SD card shows up as a USB Mass Storage Device. It wants another driver for what it says is "Android Device".
According to what we've heard so far (here and on tmonews) that's exactly what's expected to happen.

how is it possible if g1 release is on oct 22nd?
from all the press releasinfo and various blogs, its beenreported a fe hundred times that the G1 will not sync in any way, shape, or form ith a pc. This also means that youcan not try to install any app on the device through a pc like you can with a pocket pc. You will been to dr the instal file over to the storage card on the G1 and install it from there.
Also, if you actually have the devi, I'm sure all of us here on the site would love to see a detailed video of it. I know we've all seen the dozen from a few weeks ago, but there's still a lot tt was not shown.

yes vid please!! also nick is right your best bet is to probably upload it to your sd card and then put it back into the phone and install from there...if not we should start working on a sync program or something such as this
If i had mine already i would have posted all kinds of info and pictures on it. If you truely have one which i don't see how you could then put us out of our misery and share the wealth lol.
USB mass storage ?
I thought that the phone shows up as a usb mass storage device when plugged into win, mac or linux boxes via USB. Is that not true?
According to the user manual, the SD card shows up as a mass-storage device via USB. It doesn't say anything about the phone's memory.
Stop thinking winmo, guys Why write a sync application when it's drag-and-drop in the first place?
this is true....as far as adding music and whatever else you like you should be able to just drop in onto the sd card right? the only thing that people are needing a sync if for the exchange?

I found this post in google http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/msg/b9f5ddc77af39239
I put the binary folder into the SD card under /download. Now I don't know how to access the SD card and launch the application.
If i could only have it for just 3 hours. I would love to open up the phone dissect it, and later see if we can get it into bootloader, maybe mtty.
that "android device"
I *think* that is the debug CLI (not a linux shell) called the Android Debug Bridge.
Interesting that it is client/server and runs on odd port numbers between 5555 and 5585.

Check out the parts about PPP over usb and SHELL under ADB commands.

Right on man, sorry i didn't mean any disrespect i didn't think it was possible to get one early. Looks sweet, are you happy with it so far? Was wondering what kind of material the outer shell was made out of, is it rubberized or more like a plastic type material? I love the dash shell, it has a rubberized shell.

Installing Linux on a PC Using Inspire

Ok, so I know that this phone can be used as a USB drive. I'm trying to install Linux on my computer, but I don't have a CD or USB drive available other than my phone. Would it be possible to install Linux using my phone?
Thanks
You would need to figure out a way for the computer to read the phones SD card as an ISO which can be done on a standard SD card using Unetbootin or something similar. However if you put it into the phone the phone itself may not see it as a usable drive and want to format it.
+1 for Unetbootin, it makes the drive bootable. However older versions would format the drive first... I think the newer versions don't, but don't hold me to that. Also it installs to the root directory of the drive so it would suck to remove it later.
No CD drive? Are you using a "slim" laptop?
If you have a floppy drive, you could do the "oooold school" install with 40+ floppies, ha ha ha.
If you have access to a second PC, couldn't you network 'em via an ethernet cross-over cable (or hub) and install over the network?
I'm gonna recommend going and buying a $10 thumb drive.
Then, as long as you're running Linux anyway, I'm gonna shamelessly plug Fuduntu.

What ever happened to RedHat? Is it still around these days?
At risk of total thread derailment:
Red Hat still sponsors the community development of Fedora and actively deveopes and supports RHEL (RedHat Enterprise Linux).
Fuduntu is a Fedora spin, for which I'm a dev (very junior though I may be).

Its still around- a popular distro of it is fedora- it just seems most people, especially working with android go debian based instead of anything else like rpm(redhat)
Edit- and I should have refreshed the page before I responded.

Fedora 14 user here.
Returning to the original idea
Well, maybe you could format your card with one of the tools Linux provides to create bootable USB drives.
The problem starts when you turn on your computer to boot from the drive, as you would have to force your phone to USB drive mode and I'm not sure if the detection process will be fast enough so the PC catches the phone as a pen drive.
However, if you have no other choice at the moment (when I formatted a netbook I preffered to buy a 8GB pendrive and forget about any other trouble) you might give it a try. If it works please post back...

Linux on Shield

I would like to know some things about the Linux on the Shield.
1) I've heard in December of the Last Year it didn't support wifi, bluetooth and SD Cards. What is their current status now?
2) Does it supports USB Devices, like Keyboard, Mouse, Ethernet Adapter (I REALLY hope i don't need this), Printer and USB HUB?
3) Is there some kind of Driver for the Tegra 4 on the Linux?
4) How do i install Linux on the Shield?
5) Is there some way to dual boot it with Android?

Good news - Wifi and SD cards are now working (well, most SD cards at least) on my roth_next branch: https://github.com/linux-shield/kernel/tree/roth_next Bluetooth is still out of luck for now.

All USB devices supported by Linux should be working with SHIELD, as long as the kernel driver for them is compiled. I have played with a keyboard, mouse, network adapter and mass storage device, all connected to a hub.

It's a quite manual process at the moment. You might want to consider what your end goal is, and whether it is worth the trouble, knowing that there is no graphic acceleration, no way to sleep, and so on. If you really want to give it a try (it implies cross-compiling the kernel, playing with fastboot, and extracting user-spaces to SD cards), let me know and I will try to come with a documentation sometime soon.

Sort of. You can store the Linux user-space on a SD card, or even in a file on your Android data partition that will be mounted as a root loopback device.
The problem is that SHIELD's bootloader only supports booting via two means:
- Whatever kernel is on the BOOT partition
- Whatever boot image is given to it using the fastboot boot command.
This means that you can either keep the Android boot image on the BOOT partition and boot Linux using "fastboot boot" while your SHIELD is connected to your PC via USB, or the other way around. But if you want to switch the system to boot, you will need to connect your SHIELD to your PC and play with fastboot.
Let me know if this answers your questions and if you need more information. What you can do with Linux on SHIELD is still limited ; but it's a fun way to get involved in kernel hacking since many missing drivers can easily be written and general support can also be improved.
"Good news - Wifi and SD cards are now working (well, most SD cards at least) on my roth_next branch: https://github.com/linux-shield/kernel/tree/roth_next Bluetooth is still out of luck for now."
Nice! No need of a ethernet adapter.
"All USB devices supported by Linux should be working with SHIELD, as long as the kernel driver for them is compiled. I have played with a keyboard, mouse, network adapter and mass storage device, all connected to a hub."
Nice. Does there is HPLIP for ARM devices?
"Not sure what you mean - Tegra 4 is supported in Linux mainline, and some of its devices as well."
I mean 3D drivers. Which would allow specific apps to run fine.

I want to use it as an office OS for doing things that Android can't as my desktop is dead.

So i still need a Desktop for boot it? :/
Sent from my GT-S7562L using XDA Free mobile app
If you just want to use your SHIELD as an office device, your needs may be better served by one of the many "Linux on Android" apps, e.g:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zpwebsites.linuxonandroid
This will allow you to run a Linux desktop alongside with Android, without rebooting, without recompiling kernels, and without requiring a desktop PC.
Graphics will be slow as death, but that should be enough for LibreOffice & pals.
Network will work using the Android stack, USB devices such as keyboards and mouse should work fine too.
Jetson TK1 Development Pack
Have either of you looked at the Jetson TK1 Development Pack and the Linux4Android drive image that comes along with it? Its based off of Ubuntu 14.04 - and i believe has acceleration - so if it were to be flashed, it 'should' work - since its meant to work on the TK1 dev kit - no garuntees though
Can we please get a documentation writeup?
Very interested in your development process. I'm a new developer, and this is my main device.
