Hello all,
With how big the buzz is on the new Moto Droid, and how awesome the reviews have been on it so far, I'm hoping the modding community would attack it like a wolf on a sheep.
The question of the day though, is where will the modders conglomerate? It's not a HTC phone, so of course it wouldn't be on XDA (though I wish it was, because the android community here is first class awesome).
Why not create a sister site of XDA called droid-developers.com (or any name really, i wrote this because android-developers.com is taken). We could move all of the android forums and posts over to the sister site (which would definitely save bandwidth here on XDA), and that way the devs can have a one stop area for all android development, not just HTC phones. They could then just create new forums for other phones, like the liquid a1, motorola droid, samsung galaxy, etc..
If we have different sites for different manufacturers, the dev and mod community will be broken apart on different sites, whereas they could all be centrally located on one site.
Having all the android devs in one location not only helps form a community, but it also makes it a one stop location for everything android modding and developing. Others have tried doing so, but each attempt failed because there was no backing. If XDA made the site, it would have the backing of XDA, and with them moving all the current android forums over to the new site, it would be instant 100% backing, as that is where the devs would go for their current projects that are already posted, and any new projects.
As it stands now, there is a different forum for dream/magic, yet a lot of the posts get double posted in each because they are applicable to each. when someone is working on an application, do they choose to put it in the Dream section, Magic section, or Hero section? With it's own complete forum, there could be a general app section, etc..
Lets use an example. The Samsung Galaxy. It was the second android phone released. It's a great phone, but because it's not made by HTC, and therefore has no place on XDA, there is no modding community for it at all. A great device (and really the only one with a good amount of internal storage) has no hopes for the modding future because there is no central location for devs to conglomerate. If it was made by HTC, it would have flourished in the modding community simply because it could be discussed and worked on here at XDA.
The main thing, is they're modding Android, not the specific device. Sure each device has it's own quirks, but Android as a whole is what the topic is about. Why limit it to just HTC phones?
So please, if you agree that this will help the android community, vote in the poll, and voice your opinion by posting in this thread.
Well, as I find the proposal fair enough I've voted yes, but I'm not at all convinced about that domain.
If you intend to move devs from this site (which is well known in the android scene) to a new one, and you use as a reason that this was htc specific, you can't possibly try to name the new site droid-developers in direct reference to a motorola phone.
it wasn't used for a motorola reference. android-developers.com is already taken, as is android-devs.com.
If you have any other suggestions for domain names please post them.
Edit: fixed the first post to reflect what i stated here about the name
Are the mods here not going to create a section for this phone?
There will be no section for The Droid, Galaxy, Cliq, Liquid A1, etc.. because they are not HTC phones. XDA is for HTC phones only.

Lol, it's the origins of XDA. Look at all the phones listed on the forum. They're all HTC phones. XDA is another name for an older htc phone. This site was made and is used only for HTC phones.

Because the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 was made by HTC.
How about making an Android section on this forum that has every Android device, HTC or not? Still under the XDA-Developers.com domain though.

That wouldn't work also, as it would make the main site very clustered. the current per phone forum layout is great, and I would hope the new site would maintain the same layout. Each phone definitely needs it's own forum for hardware hacks (like rooting, SPL's, custom ROM's, etc..) but with all Android devices in one place, it's easier for the community to discuss, mod, etc.. from device to device.
you got another yes here. i would like to see all android being supported.
I too would like to see all Android supported. Especially seeings how a lot of the development will apply to most devices.
I personally hope for a new site to offload some traffic. With android coming to more carriers there is bound to be much heavier traffic.
XDA has been invaluable to me since I got my titan a few years back.
As I have been considering the DROID as an upgrade, I would feel much better about that choice knowing it had a great community to support it despite not being an HTC device.
The same could apply to Windows Mobile though. There are great WinMo devices that aren't supported by the xda-dev's. They can only do so much.
I ststed this in another thread. ModMyMoto will have a section for Droid and Cliq. As far as the others Im sure a site such as PPCGeeks will have the other devices covered.
But I wouldnt be chosing a phone based on the presence of a forum. There will always be someone modding a device if it exists, and finding info is easy enough with google.
If all the devices were located on the same forum, you would have all kinds of tardos flashing files to incorrect devices.
If youve been on XDA for a while you know that these conversations come and go. XDA does their thing, they are the big dogs on the block so its not a big deal if it takes another site to fill in the gaps that XDA cant cover.
I post most of my work on alldroid.org because I would like to use that site for software related things and then use XDA for hardware related things for my G1. I think once more non-HTC phones hit the stores there will be a big influx of people looking for a site to mod on and I dont think XDA will be able to support it unless they dramatically change their ways.
Was going through my past subscriptions and I came upon this thread. Oh how the tides have changed
Ahhh this brings back so many memories. It's great to see how much XDA has progressed over the years!
I humbly suggest that all Devs who are Cooking ROMS and/or making software that is NOT device specific or are for multiple devices move their discussions/threads to the following forums:
XDA Android Software Development
Then we can allow much of the clutter on the Dream forum for just Dream specific software/ROMS, etc.
This forum, since it was the first on this site, is being used by a majority of devs (and, others) to develop/discuss many issues/items NOT specific to the HTC Dream.
I would believe that anyone who created a thread and wished it to be moved could have it done so by making a request to a moderator.
Let me know what you think.
ALSO, there is a general xda forum now for Android Themes:
XDA Android Themes
And, one for Applications and Games:
XDA Applications and Games
should clean things up considerably -- just have more sections to watch
Very, very good. I would hope a lot of threads get moved over there from the Magic/Hero/Dream forums to help seed the place a bit more. A vast majority of the Apps in the Dream Applications section, for example, could be moved over there...
yay, another forum to keep track of! (-_-)....
Wow...someone actually listened to our suggestions, and took action? I'm amazed!

Depends on your purpose for being here. I really would prefer just to check this one for new ROMS, check the Dream Theme forum for new themes...
Then go to the general ones for everything else.
Just makes it easier to search for information! I hate having to troll through ALL the posts here to look for the general Android software development threads!!!
Can we have a dedicated development section for the Cliq, even though its a non HTC device? I mean I know XDA was started specifically for HTC phones. But isn't it time XDA expands and matures?
XDA-Developers and non HTC devices
thefoss has an *excellent* point which has been going around my head in the past couple of days. With the imminent arrival (and my imminent purchase ) of at least two quite interesting Android devices, made by companies other than HTC.

XDA was founded as, and has been a site dedicated to HTC manufactured devices (my first one was my Typhoon which to this day I still sometimes use). Such devices always sported Windows Mobile (all different incarnations) so it used to be a synonym with Windows Mobile/CE/whatever. The exception being the Sony Xperia X1, I assume because of its relative relevance on the marketas well as the fact that sports Windows Mobile.
Then came Android on the HTC Dream. At this point, XDA (at least on my opinion) became the Driving Force behind the "Expert" Android OS mod as well as to the informal user support movement.
We all know that a barrage of new Android devices is coming down the pipe, not just one or two...
What do you guys think? Mods? Owners of the forum? Poll? This is a major deal (to me) and I am torn on the issue...
I'm an android user at heart. But I also own an ipad, and I was wondering if anyone on this forum could recommend a good forum similar to XDA for apple devices? Thanks for your help.

Apple customer service. I doubt there's a really good forums similar to XDA for iProducts. Main reason includes the inability to modify and customize a Apple product. So, if a Apple user has any problems, they call Apple Customer Service. U could search Google though.
Smack that thanks button If I helped!
Always make a nandroid backup before trying anything risky.

The big google search engine has a link
You could also try Mac rumors too.
However, I've never tryed any of those forums(And I never plan to).
Android 5.0 Churrizos FTW!
I just flashed my Minix Neo X7 with the "X7 Kitkat v2.2.0 Community Edition" Rom taken from the Minix community forums. Basically everything works fine. Video playback, streaming, light gaming, with one glaring exception.
I am a subscriber to the NFL GamePass and installed on the new box. I have attached a zip the screenshots of the video quality I am getting on the app.
I am running the box in 1080i at 60 fps through to my TV. Changing the video output settings, restarting the device and re-installing the App did not change matter at all. This problem also does not occur on any of my other android devices.
I am waiting for a response from their customer support, however, I think I can find more competent technical help among the xda community.
Does anybody have any idea what causes this problem / how to fix it?
Thanks in advance for all your help!
Hi
Thanks for writing to us at XDA Assist. We can't really comment on a ROM that was obtained outside of XDA, especially without a fairly intimate knowledge of its inner workings. Plus the best people to answer your question are the support team that you've already contacted. So, with that information it's best to just wait for their support to get back to you and take it from there.
Good luck!

phone is rooted i've been running rom found at h**p://androidforums.com/threads/rom-forgottenkingdom.712740/ The rom is based off android 4.0.3. So, this being the case, is there a simple way to add speech recognition to the rom? If not can someone please point me to a good rom that does have speech recognition? I really do not want to go to a rooted version the stock rom. I will not be the owner of a phone without admin rights/privileges. For me the lack of speech recognition is a deal breaker. I'm hoping for the latest best kernal the phone can accommodate & fast/quick response & robust (glitch proof crash proof)
THANKS!!!
P.S. I'm hoping it's ok that I posted in this area of the forums I didn't find a Evo Design area, the phone is old & was never that popular anyway from what i can tell
P.S.S. (added these lines 4th October 2015) I'm looking for further assistance as my initial questions unanswered. Sorry if i'm being too much of a bother maybe this phone is long since forgotten. If anyone could more offer help on this it would sure be appreciated.
Thank You!
Hi
Thank you for using XDA Assist.
Unfortunately I didn't find anything on XDA for your device. What about using a 3rd party app for speech recognition like Dragon Mobile Assistant?
continued
as noted in the PS i'm aware there isn't a forum devoted to this particular phone. I was hoping that someone here had enough knowledge to at least point me in the right direction as concerns phone/rom issue. The problem i foresee with the work around you've suggested is that for any other apps w/ voice recognition element there is likely to be a need to tie into the android native voice recognizer. thank you for your effort primo i really do appreciate it and you have made me aware of the dragon mobile assistant which i did not even know about. your reply just didn't really answer my question. maybe i'm on the wrong forum site and should be looking for a forum with an area specifically dedicated to my device. Not really sure what to do next so any further assistance would be appreciated.
ThankYou
the workaround didn't work either
Installed Dragon Mobile Assistant. Attempt to take notes via voice fails. Pretty much same way google keep will install but cannot take notes via voice. Failing in same manner likely for same reason lack of speechrecognizer. Further assistance needed.
Thank You
I have no ther idea, sorry. I suggest you to ask in the General Q&A thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2257421
Good luck
