My little daughter dumped my OPO in her morning tea. I took it out after 2 seconds of shock and saw tea everywhere, especially in the USB port area.
The OPO is now buried in a bag of rice to get the tea out of the device.
Has anyone experience in how to handle the OPO after such an event? How can I make sure to get it as dry as possible? How long should it stay in the rice bag?
I don't want to use my OPO as a paperweight...
Any help is very much appreciated!

Hello,
In my experience it takes a while for the rice to take up the liquids. Is it inside of a sealed box? In my experience and to my knowledge it is best to put the phone into a sealed box with rice. Also if you want to be completely sure nothing will short your device after leaving it in the rice for aprox 3-7 days you can open it up and clean the connections and motherboard with isopropyl alcohol. I'd only recommend this if you're experienced with opening up phones.
Thanks for your answer, I'm experienced with desktop-pcs but I don't dare to open up a smartphone. Currently the OPO is in a closed zip bag with lots of rice. Tomorrow I'll switch to a sealed box.

Saw video of a guy dipping his OnePlus One in puddles and it was still working fine [emoji2] guess it's secretly water and tea resistant

If you are really concerned I would recommend disconnecting the battery as that way no damage can occur to your phone.
edit: As long as you turned it off asap the better the chance of it still working.
My OPO dipped into water for around 30 sec.. I have put it in a sealed rice bag now..Can you please tell me for how many hours/days I need to keep it there. I can't detach the battery, I could only uncovered it.

Hey, I left my powered off OPO for 4 days in the sealed rice bag. And I'm still using, never had a serious problem with it.

I had saved my phone also with Rice but a moisture absorbent like silicon packets and carbon packets will do a way far better job. Trust me chemistry is better

My Captivate fell off into the toilet for 2 seconds It was playing music and continued doing so after I took it out. I immediately took the battery out and dried it. I waited for the next day to try it again, just to make sure it dried completely. It seemed to work fine for a while, then I noticed I wasn't able to make calls all the time and it took the sim card some time to get recognized. (Sim card works fine on another phone)
The battery is dying faster, but that's not a big deal, I can replace it. Also I've noticed I can't boot the phone anymore without a battery.. I thought this was possible before. right?
Not sure what to do now. I'm using another backup phone for calls, and the captivate for everything else.
How did you dry it? Did you drop it in rice? I hear that's the best way.
You need to have the battery to boot the phone up...
I hear that if your phone does get wet what your suppose to do is put your phone in a bag of rice it is suppose to dry it out

Rice it up. With battery. All moisture needs to go bye bye. Though its probably to late, you should have left it off until you were 100% sure it was dry. Doesn't hurt to keep trying.
Edit: To anyone that hasn't done this yet. Unless you make enough money to wipe you [email protected] with $100 bills, don't take a [email protected] with phone in your hands.
yeah ill only take a [email protected] with my phone because i "have alot in the way".
pee hell no.. butter fingers!
If there was pee in the toilet you might get corrosion issues soon... if it was just water than drying it out should be fine.
I dried it with some toilet paper, and then used some alcohol to clean it up. Luckily the toilet was clean (only water). I also used a hair dryer (which I later read was a bad idea because heat might damage it).
I didn't use rice, but I was almost pretty sure it dried the next day.
BTW, I was listening to music while taking a shower... it's just that the bathroom is small and I was carrying some other stuff. unlucky...
Now it's showing the At&t sign and a couple of signal bars but still not making calls. I'll try to flash a new ROM, just in case..

Yes I was thinking of doing exactly the same thing. The water damage label on the battery is red already so that need to be replaced but I see another one on the phone, which is still white.
BTW, I was able to make a call now! we'll see how it goes.
Honestly, I'm impressed by the build quality. The speakers still work great and the screen is perfect.

Actually there are two -- one on battery, and one on the phone itself beside the connectors.
EVERY time I take my phone in there I think it is going to happen to me because my bathroom is tiny and for some reason I have a habit of carrying my phone directly over the toilet haha. Sorry to hear that though, try the rice in a bag trick. That should soak up most of the moisture

since you let it sit over night you may have a permanant problem. next time though use the rice trick, or better yet, dismantle it imediately! and dry it with a hair dryer, but watch the heat levels! the cappy has convertional phillips screws and is rugged and easy to disassemble without breaking anything. one reason i love it. i appreciate the design.
We've used the rice method a couple times,(teenagers) with perfect results. Too late now I think tho. We've done rice AND some desicant packs, make sure you throw out the rice!! Make sure the unit and battery is completely submerged in the rice, cover and leave it for a couple days. Good luck.
Rice works all the time saved 1 ipod put in to a washing machine. 1 iphone dropped in toilet thanks the wife. When you do the rice put it in a bag the longer you leave it in the better.

Was out on the lake with a few friends and my phone was dropped in water. I do not know how long it was in water, but when i found it, it was soaked. Is putting it in a bag of rice going to work? Please [email protected]!!!`
That sucks man....Make sure you pull the battery and let it sit for 48 hours. You can even use a blow dryer. I have heard of the rice working but they have beads you can get called HeartFelt beads and they will suck the moisture out of anything.
Just make sure you don't turn it on until you have let it sit long enough. You might get lucky. You might not. I hope you have insurance.

Rice will work... I had a friend this happened to. Pull the battery, towel dry it, and put it in an air tight container.. in the middle of some rice. Let it sit at least 48hrs. I would give it 96 personally to make sure. After 48, move the rice around a bit so some drier morsels are closer to the device, wait another 48. Put the battery in the container too but not in the device.

the g2x fits in there nice, even with my bodyglove case on. i do have to take off the belt clip though. there is some play in it though,it's not a custom fit. but, it is nicely lined with some .....i'd have to say neoprene? yes, it's neoprene. and it seems thick enough to really protect during a drop. and the outer case is rock solid. i wouldn't do it, but i'd bet you could launch your phone 50 feet and it would survive. i'm gonna try it with my g1 lol. seriously. and i'm gonna record it. maybe otterbox will send me a case if i show them how i demonstrate it's durability.
if you wanted to custom fit it, you could probably glue in a second liner with this.. http://www.google.com/products/cata...=X&ei=ywzGTZfgEsjb0QHT8oSuCA&ved=0CF0Q8wIwAg#
yeah... the phone was on when it went under. it went in a cooler and im not sure how long it was in the cooler for. i approximate it was in the cooler for about ~20 mins. im sooo pissed. i just bought this phone like 1 week ago. im still within the store return policy(14 days) but im not sure they will even take it back if it will not power on. (i was planning on taking it back anyway b/c it keeps hard freezing.)

Or you could live up to your mistake, bite the bullet and be honest. What a concept. What part of doing what he suggests isn't immoral, wrong, and fraud?
How about T-Mobile just repackages that phone and sends it to you jrwingate6? I'll bet you'd be pissed.
Why do you people think it's so hard to get these companies to do right by US?

amen. i mentioned the indicators without thinking only because i know they do sell them. but in the real world where i'm not half asleep at my pc, i'd never recommend someone do something like this. and if it looked like i was condoning something like that, i wasn't. in my years of cell phone usage,10 or so, i have never returned a phone due to my carelessness. my g1 has a cracked screen from 6 months after i got it. still sitting on my desk, still working.

I never mentioned anything about tricking someone. I don't know how you can come away with tricking someone from my post. Somebody else mentioned the stickers you can buy from EBay and yes, that would be tricking. I just told him to return as is and tell them it doesn't work. Its up to the store employee to examine the device to determine if it has water damage or not. If you think that is tricking then maybe you should go pop open a English Dictionary.

did you try white rice?
yea, well i tried rice but it wasnt white. and i read that the microwave thing is horrible for the phone.
yeah white rice has always worked for me, but i usually put it in rice right away, dropped my OG droid in the pool once, immediately took the battery out and put all the parts of the phone in white rice over night and it worked like new the next day
I think its a solid idea to let it dry out for at least three days in rice...and NOT try to power it on until its dry(or assumed) to be...water on the circuits+power is no good if it arcs over or fries a vital phone part...I know it sucks being without your b.a. smartphone for more than 5 min, let alone a few days. But, it saves u 90$...well, its saved me a couple times anyways

If instant white rice doesn't work, try instant oatmeal. (Seriously)
It might be a little more absorbent than rice, but it's also more powdery, so be prepared to blow the sh*t out of it afterwards to get it all out of the cracks.
Or cat litter. (even that crystal kind they sell now).
You can buy these silica dessicant packs online that supersuck out moisture. Buy a couple and keep on hand for this kind of "emergency" is a good idea for the future.
Place it on top of your cable box where dry heat can hit it. You got to leave it there for a couple days with the box on.

If none of that works, I know a guy, Doc Brown, who can take you back to a time before it happened so you can stop your TB from drying. Let me know if you want his info.
do a google search white rice does not work it doesn't have nearly enough power to suck water out from the crevacies of your phone. your phone just dried.

I accidentaly dropped my one x on a bucket full of water and it was in it for around 2 seconds (it took me that long to realize what had happened and snap out of shock). Luckily it had an aftermarket dual layer case that protects the usb port and headphone jack. I quickly pulled it out but noticed it was still on and touchscreen worked fine. I then proceeded to remove the case, dry it with my shirt, turn it off and burry it in a bag full of rice. Its been in it for about 7 hours now, and as I read around the internet all I found was ppl whose electronics (mostly ipods) had been underwater for waaaaay longer, so I dont have like an exact time to wait cuz I dont know how long I should leave it there. This is the first time ever I have dropped a phone (or any electronic besides headphones) on water so Im kinda unclear about things here, so any suggestion is appreciated! Thanks in advanced!
Unless u find moisture beneath the screen, no water has seeped through and you are good to go. U needen't have put it in water either..

When I got mine wet (got caught in a storm when out running) I left it in the bag of rice on a radiator for 24 hours. It was perfect when it came out, but I was probably just being paranoid.
Well my main reason for putting it in rice was cause I was worried about the headphone jack, usb/charging port, mic and speakers. I know the last thing I should do is put it to charge after its been drowned in water and my battery was low so I said what the hell n put it in the rice. So by now would it be dry enough to put it to charge and test mic, speakers and headphone jack? Or should I leave it a bit longer? Btw thanks for ur quick replies!
I'd leave it overnight.

It can't hurt o leave it longer, it CAN hurt to take it out too soon, so.... I'd certainly err on the side of caution....

I know its a moot point, and the OP is already using the phone again, but just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents for the benefit (or not) of others:
There doesn't seem to be a silver bullet to how long to dry the device, whether it will still work, etc. It all seems to be luck of the draw.
The fact the phone was only submerged a couple seconds likely is a big factor. Even though nearly all phones are not designed to be waterproof, they are closed up fairly tight. So it takes some time for water to penetrate the casing, and the more water that gets in, the more likely it will get in some area where it will cause a short. So the less time under water, the better.
If it were me, I'd leave the phone in rice for a couple days (I always have at least one older backup device for situations like this, or otherwise breaking or losing a phone). Particularly for devices that are difficult to open up, its going to take a long time for moisture to evaporate and be absorbed by the rice. Small amounts of water will evaporate pretty easily in a couple hours, if fully exposed to the air. But enclosed inside a plastic casing . . . not so much. Even surrounded by rice and with some mild heat, I'd still put the dry time in days, not hours.
And in the end, its really just a crap shoot on whether the device will even work or not (or work partially). My wife dropped her iPhone 5 in the toilet for just a second or 2, some time before Christmas. She did power it off, but did not put it in rice (was at work, and didn't really have access). She made an appointment with the Genius Bar at the local Apple store. They took the phone apart (didn't even know they did that there) and cleaned it up best they could. They told my wife there was no rhyme or reason on whether it will work, or for how long. But my wife powered the phone on that same day, and has been using it ever since, and it seems perfectly ok.
Here are pics of fog I guess and my power button doesnt work....all I did was wash the damn thing...why? Because my job is very dirty....I've done it before dont know what happened today smh....what you guys think?.....be careful anyway
Edit
Do you use soap or have it submerged under water?? I wipe mine off with a wet cloth often and no damage.

Lol I just had to ask. If I were you though I would try to stop taking it into dirty environments at your work so you wont have to clean it as much. That way hopefully you wont develop more issues.
The phone doesn't have an official IP rating and even though OnePlus claims it's water resistant, I still don't think it's a good idea to wash it.
I also don't think warranty covers water damage so that's all the more reason not to wash it.

And what's funny even with a IP rating warranty wouldn't give a hoot about the rating and never covers water or moisture damage. IP ratings are just peace of mind. Truly I miss the ip68 secure feeling of my LG G6 when I'm at the beach and stuff vs the non IP rated OP7 pro

Well that was close, glad it's all ay o okay. I'm a little worried too now. Always jog with my phone and sometimes it gets wet in the rain. So far it has been fine but after reading your thread, i'm going to start leaving it at home. Thanks for biting the bullet

Despite oneplus saying "it probably is water proof, we just dont want to spend a couple bucks per device to get it tested", I wouldn't rely on it. They probably weren't able to get a proper IP rating, don't get that thing too wet again.
