[Q] Problem with refurbished Nexus? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Since some months ago, I've experienced those common problems with power button. I bought my Nexus 5 on launch date, so my SN was 310K.
As the problem was increasing, I asked for a replacement, and it arrives today. However, I noticed that the speakers holes are the same size, and when I move the phone I hear the power button rattle.
I just have the IMEI (they are sending it without the original box), but I found this website to check the SN: http://csmg.lgmobile.com:9002/csmg/b2c/client/auth_model_check2.jsp?esn=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
And I saw that it is still 310K.
I'm not really worried about the speakers, but as I asked for a replacement, I don't want to have the same problem again in a year.
So, my question is: as these problems are well-known, can I ask for a replacement (of the replacement)? Should I worry about that button rattle?
Do you recommend me to send back the replacement and ask for another one?
Thank you!

The button rattle is a common thing. It's not really a problem, or indicative of a problem, just differences in manufacturing tolerances and ultimately just a really annoying nuisance. One of my N5s had horrible button rattle so I called Google and made a stink about it and got them to send me a replacement which I'm happy to say, was absolutely flawless. I'm the type of guy who will exchange a phone for even the slightest defect as I feel that we shouldn't have to settle for anything less than a flawless device (took 4 tries with the N5). If you want to go that route, that's completely up to you. If it bothers you, then personally I'd exchange it.

Anyways, the received phone isn't working properly. Besides the button rattle, the vibrator is doing a strange buzzing sound when it's stopping, which I think it's not normal, so I'm sending it back.
However, my original phone stopped working. I can't boot it now, it has been like that several hours, and it just stands like 10 seconds and reboots again. Cool.
My biggest concern is not being able to delete all my private data of the phone before sending it back. Should I worry about that?

Can you get into recovery? You can wipe it from there.

The problem is the power button, so even starting with the bootloader it reboots after a few seconds.
I don't want to open it and avoid warranty either.

HTC Fuze, Black/Blank Screen. Everything Else works, just can't see it.

Firstly, my screen does not show visuals. I can still touch the screen and make things happen, but it is just a back-lighted black screen. I have answered calls on it and such. Basically I'm returning it and getting a new one.
Since I am getting a new one, I want to see if anyone ever heard of this problem and to see what the cause of it is, for prevention purposes.
I didn't get it wet (the white sticker in the back is still white.) Though I have flashed PROven ROM to it a couple months ago (it's a great ROM by the way), but could that have messed up my screen?
I also wanted to know since I can't see the screen, would I have to, for warranty purposes, (blindly) reflash to the Stock ROM?
Thanks in advance!
Yeah, you probably oughta return it to stock configuration (good luck on that!). If you're really lucky, that might even fix the problem. Have you done a hard reset yet? Might be worth a try, although it certainly sounds like a hardware problem.
Sounds like the flex cable has gone bad
Exactly same thing happened to me this Tuesday. Luckly I backed up info to memory card using PimBackupV2.8 with remote control software on my PC. With the remote contol tool, I could see everything as if on my phone and icons are clickable.
Hard reset did not fix the issue. I then flashed the shipped official ROM and stock SPL for warranty purpose. Will send the phone to them today for repair.
mine also like that..
from vodafone also..
the things that make me panics is the phone become hotter and hotter.

Summer is coming...
Sometimes they make updating phones too easy......
The back of my phone often gets hot I have to use the edges to hold it even though it was not a hot day and it is in my pocket.
blank screen
ya so my screen is blank white
but everything else works
i've heard something about this being a faulty "flex cable"
how can i fix this?
thanks so much for your help
how do i fix this???
did you eventually find out how to fix this/???
u ever end up fixing that? how?
thankss
Mine was still in warranty so I rang Vodafone. They sent me a special delivery envelop the following day. I sent it back to them. The following day I got a text message from them saying they got it and was working on it to fix the fault. The next day received another message saying the device was on the way back to me and I should receive it the following day.
Actually they sent me back a replacement
So.. basically.. is this a faulty flex thing?
I had the same problem for the last week until today i was about to buy another one since i dont have any warranty for this one.. I searched google and saw somebody say that just putting a business card between the keyboard and the lcd and then slide it and it works so far
hope it helps everybody
Ack! my Fuze, which I got off eBay a few months back, just went black too.
I'm not exactly sure whether it's the LCD or the flex cable, but the fact that the D-pad backlight also has become intermittent makes me think it's the cable.
So has anyone attempted the flex cable repair themselves? I see you can buy the cable for around $40 and the LCD for around $80 from Hong Kong.
Maybe this is a sign I should just get an Android device.

same thing happened to me Twice.... in my sleep overnight. I LOOOOOOOOVe my raphael but man this was the last straw
This maybe of some help for those of you with blank screens. I bought a Touch Pro on ebay that had a very dark screen, occasionally you could just make out some icons being displayed. Using Mymobiler showed that the basic system was working, as was the touchscreen. Other symptoms were that the camera would not work and the keypad lighting was intermittent. Sometimes on connection to Mymobiler a dialog box would come up saying there was an error with Microp?!?
Despite cleaning all internal connections and ensuring they were correctly and securely made the problem remained. I then noticed that the small camera used for video calls (in a socket on the main flex cable) looked very dirty and corroded. I removed the camera module and, using a fibreglass brush, cleaned the contacts on both the socket and the camera module. These were very badly corroded with verdigris.
On putting everything back together I was most surprised to find the screen was now working, as was the main camera. Unfortunately the ROM that is loaded doesn't seem to have any facility for checking the front video camera. There are still problems with sound - both the loudspeaker and the headphones seem to be dead and I have not had the opportunity to test GPS, Wifi, bluetooth, buttons, etc, however I will keep working on it.
Hope this is of help to someone.

Captivate's touch buttons activate on their own?

Hi all, I'm wondering if anybody else has seen or heard of an issue like this.
I just bought a captivate from a person on craigslist, everything seemed fine when I was there checking the phone out (sim worked, perfect condition, etc) but now that I've got it home and been using it for a day I've noticed that the bottom touch buttons sometimes click on their own. Meaning I don't need to even touch any part of the bottom button area and the buttons activate. As you can imagine this is pretty frustrating, when you're in an app and all of a sudden the home button activates and brings you out of the app. It usually seems like the home button is the most susceptible, and sometimes will go crazy and keep clicking itself for 10-20 times in a row.
So far I've found no rhyme or reason as to why it's doing this and haven't been successfully in getting it to stop. I'm curious if anybody else is having an issue like this, and if so what did they do? I'd probably just return it to an AT&T store for a new unit, but I'm worried about trying to return the phone as a defective unit as I wasn't the original purchaser.
Any suggestions or ideas?
When I went to up switch my phone at best buy they're was a brand new phone that they took out oh the box for me that continuously hit the home button. You could see the back light of the button rapidly turn on and off
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I had this same problem on my first captivate, swapped it out and had the issue again except with the search button. Swapped it out again and finally got one without the problem.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Thanks all, so it seems like it may be not just my specific unit, which I guess is good.
Now I'm just nervous about attempting to return the phone to AT&T for a swap out as I'm not the original purchaser. Anybody have any problems when doing something like this?
Mine does this too (search button), but strangely only under very specific conditions.
You can try AT&T's warranty exchange service, but there's a 10000:1 chance of getting it exchanged in the store without the original purchase receipt.
So, those 10000:1 odds? Ya... didn't happen. I took it in tonight and I said I was having problems with my captivate having the buttons activate own their own and they seemed interested, then found out that I didn't buy it from the store and pretty much stopped all trouble shooting and said they couldn't cover it and referred me to a "AT&T device support center". So that'll be my next step, or trying the warranty exchange service, this is the first I've heard of it.
Also what specific conditions does your search button activate?
On launch day, my first Captivate did that right in the store, it took 30 minuets and letting both the guy who sold me the phone and even the store manager see the phone kept doing that. Took it home and tried to charge it *left it charging for 6 hours and never got more then 84% charged*, returned it because the home button went off 20 - 30x in less then a minuet.. Now the second one works perfectly but I have to be careful sometimes I hit the search button with my hand!
HTH,
Charlie
I had the same problem and was able to fix it by upgrading to JH3. See my post here: (remove spaces) h t t p://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=767666
mine is doing this randomly and i have to phsysically hit the home button to make it stop. Anyone have any idea why this is happening? I don't remember seeing this when i had the case on but last few days i've been carrying it around without a case, it has gone crazy a few times
Spastic search button
I had the same problem with my search button. It only happened occasionally and didn't seem like a big deal. When it started happening more frequently, I went to the store and they pretty much dismissed it as my fault. Should have pushed it further, but it wasn't horrible yet. Finally got so bad I couldn't deal with it any more so went back to the store (not out of my 30day exchange) and they got on the phone with their warranty company and a new one is being sent out. I hope it doesn't have worse problems.

[Q] My Photon Q stopped vibrating this morning (HARDWARE ISSUE, NOT software)

I noticed this morning nothing would make my phone vibrate anymore.l checked every setting and made sure everything was set to vibrate but nothing would actually make the phone shake, then I determined it must be a hardware issue after doing factory resets, OEM flashes, and several NANDROID restores - I smacked the back of the phone with my knuckles right where the speaker is, and while I was in the volume control panel I had the vibrate length menu open, i selected an option and the phone very very weakly vibrated, and having vibrated once, it then lodged itself loose again or something because it wouldn't vibrate again until I smacked it again.
I've had it for 2 months, I've never ever dropped it or, with the exception of hitting it to diagnose my issue, ever let it experience any kind of acceleration or sudden stop. I babied this thing and then this **** happens? I don't have TEP - what should i do? Should I take it apart? My warranty is already void from unlocking the bootloader, or is this different because it's a hardware issue????
Hardware issues != software issue.
I'd take it to a store and see what they say. I need to take mine in sometime too to see what they'll do about my caps lock LED since it never worked.

They're sending out a new one right now so I'm just gonna swap phones.
Exact same thing happened to me.
Did they charge you $50 to get a replacement phone like they did to me?

Yup, a refurb at that. I found out that the Photon 4G motor is the same as in the Q but I can't solder that precisely so I just paid the $50. ****.

[Q] LG G2 will not power on, seemingly no reason

Here is what happened exactly:
So the phone is sitting on my windowsill so i can get service and receive texts messages. i get a text so i walk over, pick up my phone, unlock it, and i pressed on the textbox to start typing my reply message. as soon as i press the text box my phone freezes, and thinking its no big deal i hold down the power button to turn off my phone (took about 10 seconds to power off). Now my G2 will not do anything at all, wont power on, wont charge, the red light doesn't even come on with the charger plugged in.
Things I've tried:
holding power/power+down/power+up for 2 minutes+
disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes and trying ^ again
disconnecting every component and reconnecting then trying ^^ again.
disconnecting battery, plugging in charger
disconnecting battery, plugging in charger, then reconnecting battery with charger still attached
charging with lg charger for 12 hours
additional details that may be useful:
at&t D800
rooted
cwm recovery
optimus g3 custom ROM
literally never have had an issue with this phone before
a new battery is on its way in case that is the issue

Scratch that, i actually canceled the purchase of the new battery because i think i may need a new mobo instead. I'm not gonna buy anything until i get a second opinion at least.
sorry about the 3rd post in a row
I've ordered a new motherboard that has arrived today in the mail. after i get that in my old phone ill update the thread again.
I have to say though, i am extremely surprised and irritated by the absolute lack of support I've received from this site. i would always come here to find answers in other threads and the community seemed pretty awesome, so its pretty unfortunate that i haven't gotten even a single reply. i guess people only want to help others when they already no the answer...

Have you found a solution to this? My phone did the exact same thing yours did last Friday. I tried several button combos and the only thing that gave me some hope was resetting (power + vol. down). I was able to get the LG splash, then the ATT splash and jingle with the LED lights changing colors, but that was it, went back to dead. I'm debating ordering a battery and some tools to try and get this working again.

Yeah, so i got the mobo in my phone and it turned on and everything was working again! however the mobo i bought had a broken battery connection so i could only use it if it was on the charger so i had to send it back. but replacing my motherboard will fix my issue.
as for yours i have no idea, if it wont turn on even with the charger plugged in then replacing your mobo may be a solution.
i still think its pathetic that no one with real experience has replied to this thread, i guess you cant believe what your told about this place unless your question is easy to answer.

i got it on eBay, the original price was like $120 but i put in an offer of $75 and they took it. when you buy it make sure you compare the pictures on the posting to your actual Mobo.
All that you will need for the switch is a credit card, a knife, an extremely tiny screw driver, and some double sided tape(the tape is optional).
as you can see in my picture, the board i bought is on the right and the old one is on the left. you have to watch for stuff like that when buying a part like this.
i think I'm about to buy a D800 G2 with a busted screen for $40 in the next hour, if i get it ill let you know how it goes.
Success!!!
Alright so yesterday i did buy that busted G2 and when i met up with the kid i made sure everything worked before i bought it. i got back to work and made the switch(i was going slow and i was debating on swapping the charging component, took about 35 minutes).
I did not wanna put my Sim in the phone until after i had downloaded all my apps and configured all of my settings the way i like them, so about 6 hours later i get a chance to make the final switch over. when i did put in my SIM everything APPEARED to work fine, but when i left my home i realized that my data was not sending or receiving anything at all? i went to the grocery store and bought a glasses repair kit for the screwdriver inside and opened the phone back up, everything appeared to be connected properly.
I left and called AT&T customer support and this guy helped me fix the issue, apparently their system though i was still using the temp iPhone 4 i had. after he switched the old IMEI number to my new Mobo's IMEI, i restarted my phone and it worked perfectly! i highly recommend taking this route if you can get a new board for less than a new G2 costs.
The Mobo i got off the kid is legit too, i guess he bought it only a month or two ago because it has some features i did not have like the knock code. i also got it rooted and flashed TWRP, not sure if ill flash a G3 ROM or leave it like it is.

RMA a slightly damaged phone

Hello, So my Nexus 5 began going into bootloop and random reboot since last december and I could usually fit it by tapping around the power button. This problem is well known and the only real fix is to change the power button. Since my phone is out of waranty by a couple weeks I opened it up and when looking at the power switch I thought .... No way I can change that, ill just try my luck with tech support ...
Luckilly they agreed to send me an RMA right away I'm just a little concern because the back cover now does not fit like it used to and the phone is missing a plastic tab on top of the sim tray. Do you think google will charge me ? Anyone had a similar issue before ? I really don't want to play for that rma ...
