ZTE Mustang Custom Bootanimation and Bootsound! - Android General

This is a guide on how to change the Boot sound on your ZTE Mustang! (Also known as ZTE Z998)
**REQUIRES ROOT**
For a guide on how to root the ZTE Mustang, visit my other thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/guide-zte-mustang-root-zte-z998-t3009150
(If you want to change the boot animation, just use the app Boot Animations

Alright, now onto the Boot Sounds!
As a AT&T user, I find that the AT&T boot sound is way to loud, not to mention annoying. So, with NO help from Google, I figured it out myself!
First, make sure you have an app like root explorer, or any file explorer with root privileges.
Now, navigate to system/etc and find a file named Bootsound.mp3. You can play the sound to verify.
Now, rename that file to Bootsound.bak. This way, if your custom sound doesn't work, you still have the original and can simply rename to restore.
Now, download or create your own sound which you want as your new bootsound, preferably something more mellow and quieter. I have my very favorite boot sound listed below, Windows XP, works great with windows custom boot animation!:
Windows XP: http://www.mediafire.com/listen/bhe2yb7mvcrt2r8/Microsoft_Windows_XP_Startup_Sound.mp3
Now, with your new .mp3 file (must be mp3 format) you need to rename your sound to Bootsound.mp3. Now, copy it over to your phone and place it in system/etc.
Finally, LAST STEP!!!!!
Now, (if in root explorer) press and hold on your new Bootsound.mp3 until a menu pops up. Select the Permissions tab. Un-tick the Group Write permission (Very center box) and click ok (Your permissions should be rw-r--r--). Alright, your done! Exit out and reboot to the soft melody of whatever you choose!

Easiest way to upload boot screen/animations

So i was looking around at other boot aanimation forums and stumbled across one over at android forums about a super easy way to get boot animations loaded....I was shocked when i decided to be the test puppet myself and it worked.
1. Download PutYourBootHERE.zip from http://rghost.net/1680923
2. Unzip the folder to what ever directory you want "c:\PutYourBootHERE". It should contain an adb.exe, AdbWinApi.dll, and a RunME file.
3. Place what ever bootanimation.zip in the same folder that you just unzipped.
4. Click on RunMe.
5. It will give you some "press Y to continue at your own risk or N for No" prompt. press Y and hit enter.
6. You will see now that you have options to reboot, reboot in recovery, copy boot to phone, and exit. Choose option 3-copy boot to phone
7. Your going to go through checklist to make sure your phone is plugged in, in debug, you put bootanimation.zip in the folder, and you have a copy. Press any key to continue.
8. It will ask you if you want to reboot your phone after the process is complete. I do just to make sure everything copied properly.

Just try it and it worked. Although this will not upload your sound animation. It will do the boot alone . Perhaps a tiny tune for that part will make the batch perfect

It just got rid of my boot sound all together(which is fine with me).
Also what folder do you look in? I find it in the /system/media folder.

well the thing posted above pushes it to the data local folder or whatever
I had to delete the stuff out of there because I was using the evos stock location of /system/customize/resource
so does this method work with custom ROMS or it will place the zip in the wrong location ... can u just copy the ZIP to the correct folder in root explorer?
No offense to the OP because at that time it was the easiest way but now with NAND unlocked.
Launch root explorer..copy the bootanimation.zip and audio file if it has one and then go into the correct folder and delete the old and paste the new in.
Done..i dont see how it can get easier then that.

this is true .. just need to know which folder to send it to ... for example in the fresh ROM
first you want to check /system/customize/resource/ because thats where the default one is at..fresh probably got rid of it already..
as long as its gone from there start using /system/media/ for the location.
thank you .. its in system/media !!
what if i dont have that folder?? Im running the newest edition of Fresh

Default at&t "rethink possible" boot animation

Hi,
Can anyone point me in the right direction.
I am looking for the default Inspire 4G at&t boot animation. Would like to put that on my Inspire.
I am currently running CM7 Gingerbread and I'm just not fond of that boot animation.
Thanks in advance.
Search in these threads. I have already posted it for someone else.
Edit: I actually found it quickly so here is the link.

Thanks for the reply.
I have actually downloaded yours and tried to flash it in CWM. It didn't work. Maybe because I'm on Gingerbread. Any suggestions?
It will not flash through CWM. You need to use a program such as Root Explorer to copy and paste it into the default location which is usually System/Customize/Resource.

I found big lou's guide and it worked.
Just used the command: adb push bootanimation.zip /data/local
You can change the bootanimation anytime you like. First, the file has to actually *be* a bootanimation. All you do is place the bootanimation.zip - it must read EXACTLY that way, bootanimation.zip - onto the root of your SD Card. That means, it shouldn't be in a folder or anything. Next using Root Explorer (make sure you have read/write ability (there's a button at the top of the display, when you first open Root Explorer which reads R/O. Push it once, and it changes to R/W, meaning that you have Read/Write permissions). Next go to the SD Card, find the bootanimation.zip that you placed there earlier and long-press on it. This brings up a menu with several choices, I always choose Copy. That copies the bootanimation, and you then back up one level to the first screen you saw, when you chose R/W. Scroll down a little until you find "data", and click on it to open it. Scroll down again until you come to a file called "local", and open it. There should be two or three things in view (a largely empty folder) and that is the place that you push the button saying "Paste". Once it pastes the bootanimation there, back out of Root Explorer, reboot your phone and you should now have your new bootanimation displaying.

Thanks for the response, I'll keep that in mind to try next time. I did get it to work without going into root explorer.

check out this slick boot animation

i take absolutely no credit for this custom boot animation. i'm just linking it from rootzwiki so it can get a bit more exposure.
it's pretty sweet if you ask me!
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/16233-boot-animation-kindle-fire-rings/
looks cool.. will give it a try tonight
How do I install this? Will I still have the twrp stuff option when I first boot up like I do now?
I don't like the fact that the "kindle fire" font is not correct. Though, the real font is expensive as sh*t.

took these directions from another custom boot animation thread, but they're accurate.
Instructions:
1. Preview the Boot Animation (to make sure you like it)
2. Download bootanimation.zip
3. Transfer it to your phone using any means necessary (I use Dropbox, feel free to use your USB cable)
4. Use a root exploring application (such as Root Explorer) and navigate to system/media and rename bootanimation.zip to bootanimation.zipbak (this will keep your original boot animation on your SD Card for restoration purposes.
5. Use a root exploring application (such as Root Explorer) and copy the bootanimation.zip file that you transferred in step 3. from the directory you put it to system/media. (in Root Explorer copying the .zip requires turning the button on top of the screen to Mount R/O by tapping it, and then you can paste the file!)
edit: credit to xda member pyrostic for these directions!

[Q] How to add custom ringtones?

Hi everybody! I'm new to the forum and to Android devices too, so please forgive me if I'm making some simple mistakes.
I've recently bought this beautiful device, and I've recently customized it with MaximusHD ROM so now I'm running Android 4.2.2 + Sense 5.0
I want to add my customized iPhone ringtones to my One S. I've googled for something that around the world and it seems damn simple but I cannot manage it to work as expected. I've searched also this forum and the instructions seems everywhere like this:
1) plug your device to the computer
2) transfer your ringtones to the equivalent folder on the device (somewhere it's called ringtones, somewhere else Ringtones I don't know if it's important or not)
3) that's it! You can add your ringtones browsing into Settings - Sound.
Well, I perform the steps but no ringtones at all!
I've tried to replace their extension from .m4r to m4a and also mp3 but nothing changed.
I've tried to reboot and or switch off my device, nothing.
I've tried to put the ringtones in the Download folder and the move them from inside the device with Solid Explorer, nothing.
I've tried to put them in Music folder, nothing at all...
What's wrong?
The ringtones aren't bought from iTunes, they are simple mp3 cropped to 30 sec with this site http audiko dot net/
They are DRM free in fact Solid Explorer can playback them regardless their file extension.
I've even found a thread where it's talking about a .nomedia file in the folder, but it's not the case of my device with Android File Transfer and Solid Explorer I don't see any .nomedia file into Ringtones folder.
Thank you for your help in advice!
Give "media scanner" from play store a try...
Sometimes even my phone needs some time to find all new custom ringtones...

Hi, where can I find that option on Play Store?
However in the meantime I've found a solution.... really strange but it works.
I've sent the mp3s via Bluetooth. I had to rename it from m4r to mp3 first but after that I've transferred them to the phone, Settings -> Sound displayed them instantly without rebooting the device. I've noticed that they're stored in downloads/bluetooth folder.
It seems to me that if the Sense doesn't "see" the files then it won't work nevertheless the folder I put them in.
But I can live with mp3 stored in downloads/bluetooth folder.
It just sounds really strange to me it doesn't work in the easier way.
I assume that your device is rooted. Use ES File Explorer ... tools ... root explorer ... mount R/W ... then, open system folder ... media folder ... audio ... ringtones. That's where to copy and paste your ringtones. Afterward, simply change ES File Explorer back to R/O and reboot. Your new ringtones will now be in the settings menu.

Yes, it's rooted since I've installed MaximusHD ROM.
In one of my attempts I've tried to put the ringtones in that folder with Solid Explorer (that asked me for permissions) then I rebooted the device but still nothing, only I don't remember if in that attempt the file extensions were mp3 or m4r (ven if it seems it doesn't matter, at least to the file manager that playback them even if I rename it .ogg).
There's one thing that I don't understand: I've noticed that Android File Manager shows me the content of /storage/emulated/0 folder; however in the folder /storage/emulated/0/Ringtones there are two ringtones (hangouts_message.ogg and hangouts_video_call.ogg) that system sound settings recognize without problems. The thing that I don't understand it's why it doesn't work if I put my files among this two.
Oh and there's also another ringtone that the system sound settings recognize and it's placed in /storage/emulated/0/media/audio/notifications but again if I put my files there they aren't recognized.
I don't understand why files sent via Bluetooth works while transferring directly in the proper folder by USB don't...
They can be ogg or mp3 files, either will work. However they need to be placed into system folders, not simply put into storage folders of internal memory on your sd card. In order to do that you will need root explorer or ES file explorer, and mount the system as I explained earlier. If you need a step by step instruction, let me know.

Hi, thank you. What's really sound strange to me it's that a "normal user" has to root his device to put some ringtones on it while using Bluetooth everything works fine. I mean, even Apple let you put your ringtones with iTunes, without jailbraking the iPhone.
Besides, if this is the only method that works, then I really don't understand what is the purpose of Ringtones, Notifications folders in the /storage/emulated/0 (those normally displayed by Android File Transfer app) if they doesn't do what expected.
Those folders already existed on the phone, I didn't touch anything.
Actually, the Maximus rom changes your sd card ... my guess is, that is what is keeping you from simply dropping the files into the ringtone folder, like you can on a stock rom. None the less, if you are rooted, the best and most complete way, is to do what I described earlier.
Yeah, it's possible. I can ask on the official topic of that ROM maybe.
Thank you for your help I'll make a test and let you know if it worked.

Go to System root/ system/media/audio/ui/BST and notice there is Poweron and Poweroff.ogg files, rename those with .bak.
For example, PowerOn.ogg -> PowerOn.ogg.bak
Also, look if youd like through all available sounds and disable same way if you dont want as well.

I changed the 'system/media/audio/ui/BST', that didn't get it,
but you led me down the correct general path...
The directory for the power on at the 'Spark' boot is...
'system/media/audio/ui/SPR'
there is the PowerOn.ogg which control the boot 'spark' sound.
For those who need a bit of how to...
rooted with TWRP (unfamiliar with other recoveries, but should be similar)
reboot into TWRP
Mount
check 'System' box
back to TWRP main
Advanced
File Manager
follow folder path to 'system/media/audio/ui/SPR'
press 'PowerOn.ogg'
select 'rename'
add '.bak' to make 'PowerOn.ogg.bak'
Swipe to Confirm
back out to TWRP main and reboot system
