[Completed] [Q] IUNI U2 CPU Clock Speed Control - XDA Assist

I am using IUNI U2 phone. this phone has Snapdragon 800 processor but battery is only 2200mAh. I want to reduce the CPU clock for better battery life. I am using IUNI OS 4.4.2.
can anyone suggest me a way to do this??

Hi
Thanks for writing to us at XDA Assist. In order adjust CPU settings you must have root access on the device. I was unable to find a specific root method for your phone but I'd suggest you take a look here:
How to Root Any Device
It's going to be trial and error, so hopefully one of those methods will work. Once (if) you get root there are a variety of CPU control apps on the Play Store, just search for "CPU control".
Good luck!

Thanks for your reply.
I have rooted my phone already and installed No-frills CPU control app. now I can set max freq of cpu but when I check my cpu freq in others apps like cpu-z then it shows freq higher than I have set in cpu control app and also there is no effect on the battery life after decreasing the freq. I think my phone kernel does not allow it.
one more thing, if I want to port an AOSP rom to my phone then from where should I start? I m studying computer science and have some knowledge of programming but don't tried anything about android yet. currently I can install just simple custom roms and don't know more than that.
Reason to change the rom of my phone is 1. I want to learn android rom porting. 2. I dont like the stock IUNI OS rom of my phone because lots of bugs.

In CPU-Z are you talking about the "clock speed" reading where you're saying it is showing a higher frequency? If so, that reading will never change because that's showing you the capability of the chip, not its current settings.
There are countless guides on how to port ROMs available on XDA, here's just a couple:
[GUIDE] How to port ROMS
[GUIDE]How To Port ROMS to Your Device [AOSP]
[GUIDE]How To Port Different ROMS to Your Device
There are many more, generally found in this section:
Android Software Development
Good luck!
PS. Please note that XDA Assist isn't a general helpdesk area, our purpose is to direct people who don't know where to post in the right direction.

Yes I am talking about the clock speed. In cpu-z SOC section we can see the status of each core. We can see the core is stopped or running at which speed and there the cores speed changes to higher than I have selected.

Go into the settings section of No Frills and check the "prevent changes from other apps" box, see if that helps.

Tips and Tricks to make your XT720 fly!

This topic is intended for those few Motorola XT720 users.
As you well know, Motorola, in their infinite wisdom, have created a gimped phone that seems to have mostly problems about it rather than advantages.
For a start, they have underclocked the CPU from its possible theoretical maximum of 1GHz to a paltry 550 MHz (and the update only unlocked an on-demand setting of up to 720 MHz). Secondly, the included launcher is actually inferior to both stock Vanilla Eclair and most other 3rd party launchers. It is sluggish and never quite feels smooth (especially so when browsing your apps or switching panels).
So what is the solution to the above problems and how to make your XT720 truly fly and feel comparable to most any other high-end smartphone? Simple, I say!
I won't tell you how to do these steps, but I can provide info and know-how-to if people ask me to:
0) Install Astro File Manager from the Market.
1) Root your device. Use Universal Androoter to do this. Try to go for latest possible version you can find. Your phone will not be able to find it on the Market so try Google.
2) Go to http://code.google.com/p/milestone-overclock/ and download the basic program to overclock your XT720. The program allows you to do 'real' (actual) overclock of up to 1.2 GHz, but your CPU will be unstable in this speed. Instead, opt for 1GHz, which is not a 'real' overclock, since the Texas Instr. CPU inside your phone is actually able to run at this speed natively.
3) Download SetCPU or get it from XDA.
Have it 'automatically' configure / find your CPU speed and then set it up as such:
Make sure the upscale governor is set to at least 85. Mine is at 86.
a) Fully Charged / Plugged In: Min/Max at 1000MHz (Performance) [55]
b) Below 40% Min 550 / Max 1000 (On Demand) [60]
c) Below 20% Min 500 / Max 550 (On Demand) [65]
d) While Screen Turned Off Min 150 / Max 500 (On Demand) [70]
Make sure all settings are set to 'Enable' and 'auto-run' is checked.
4) Download Zeam Today Launcher from the Market. It is free. Install it and press Home. Try it once to be sure and safe, but afterwards make sure you set it to 'default' (so that it launches as the default launcher).
Restart your phone and voila. Enjoy XT720 as you never have before.....
I have an HTC Desire and a Samsung Galaxy S and I promise you that my XT720 feels (almost) as snappy as they, and that's a huge difference in improvement, given that I felt that the XT720 was one of the sluggiest phones I had ever have to experience! Now it can finally unlock its full potential.
EDIT: Realised I accidentally posted this in the wrong subsections. This was done unintentionally. Please can some mod move it to the 'General' section?
Thanks for your post, grcd! Just some questions...
Do all 0 to 4 have to be done, & in that order? Or can I choose any?
What is Astro File Manager for? Is it needed to do 1 to 4?
Edit: ok, so 2 & 3 need root. But are 0 & 4 necessary or only recommended?
Edit: ok, I can choose among different file managers for 0, & among different launchers for 4.
& I can't find a single appropriate page on universal androoter on google? Except your post.
Edit: oops, found universal androot! Sorry, noob
very usefull
thanx
My friend just got one of these and I've been trying to find some good resources but can't seem to turn anything up.
Are them any development forums for this model out there? And are there any custom roms out or is the stock rom, rooted, overclocked with cleaned up the bloatware the best you can get?

XT720 bootloader is locked and currently there's no known method to attack it. So, no custom ROMs. For Optimization, check the below link. You'll need to root your phone first (either One Click Root via PC or using Universal Androot apk).
this optimizer script got Busybox, Apps2SD, JIT from Froyo, custom build.prop, removing unnecessary apps and custom themes.
Code:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/motorola-milestone-xt720/74284-guide-milestone-xt720-apps2sd-froyo-jit.html
App2sd is a must, the internal memory for this phone is too small. I even put a class 10 micro sd in it.
Thanks for the optimization link, spiderx_mm! I'll do that too but it will take me a bit longer to be confident in doing that.
Meanwhile, the overclocking++ advice above seemed to help at the start, but little by little, my XT720 was lagging again, & lagging longer & longer. Does this happen to others?
I'm also encountering weird problems, like Dolphin Browser HD 4.2 tabs reloading from the web even for conditions when it's supposed to reload from the cache. So I'm also trying to reverse the process tio isolate the problem, but I have a few questions.
Once the setcpu modifications are done, can I unroot? It seems to me no, because I would think root is needed to change the clock on the fly? But if I simply overclock without using setcpu, then it seems to me that I can unroot without undoing the overclock changes?
While at this, is there an important sequence to follow to reverse the whole process? Do I have to set setcpu to the clock that I want to revert to before reverting the clock? I would experiment on my own except for the risk of bricking
Tia!
@grcd Will this improve camera response and hd video recording quality?
@spider thanks for the link. I'll give that a shot. I'm assuming since it hasn't been done yet, that no one is working to unlock the bootloader?
@reggie you will most definitely need to retain root to use setcpu. The app setcpu is what's actually changing the scaling itself, that's why there's the 'set at boot' option, bc the app has to set it everytime. Because the kernel just has overclock capabilities, but not overclocked by default, you will always need setcpu or a similar app to do the actual overclock. Why would you want to unroot anyways? If your having issues, I would recommend using system panel for a few days and see if somethings bogging your system down, it has great monitoring functions. I've yet to do the optimization, but I can't imagine anything there is what's causing you to have lag issues..

You can replace it with any other file explorer of your like and choice. The basic idea is to get root, and using Universal Androoter is the only way I know of for the XT7220 that is user friendly. Afterwards the rest is simple, using the overclocking app and SetCPU.

I noticed that too, so my initial excitement wore off. It seems that I was a bit wrong and some XT7220 devices will not happily run at 1GHz without some lag issues. Try lowering your speed to the next step down and see if that helps -- this might mean running at 800MHz, which is a mere 80MHz overclock, but whatever).
The optimizer script might help speed some things further up. But I haven't tried it yet. Also, Apps2SD will definately help as the phone has little internal memory, so the more apps that are there then the slowest things will get over time.
I am not sure of the ways to unroot to be entirely honest, but I guess you have to check FAQs for Universal Androoter to see if the process is reversable. As about the rest, it is quite simple: Just uninstall SetCPU (it might help to return the clock to its normal speed, but uninstalling it will do it anyway I suppose), and then use the Milestone Overclock to return the speeds to the stock speeds. Then uninstall that too.

AFAIK it will not. Or it might, but the differences are negligible. I am afraid that unless there is a custom ROM or a complete kernel hack, significant improvements in the camera department might be hard to come by.
It's very sad how badly Motorola dropped the ball with this phone. I admit I gave up on it and sold it to a friend for cheap.

[q] overclocking and kernel

Hey yall I have a newbie q and a for you
Im new to overclocking!
I had my phone unlocked, rooted, and they flashed a custom rom that overclocks the device form 600mhz stock to 796mhz.
HTC DEsire C:
Android 4.0.3
Sense 4.0
Slim Sense 1.0
My question is..by default the cpu speed is 796mhz now. When I whipe the phone with factory data reset, it still runs at max speed. Is this because the kernel is set to this by default? This is the max I want to run at, and basically apps like CPU Tuner are only underclocking the device? When I use CPU Tuner, Min is set to 122mhz and max is 796mhz. Also If I change the max cpu speed form an app, will it conflict with the kernel that runs at 796 by default? can I change the max cpu speed to any supported MHz I want through an app?
I would also love a few tips from the pros.
THankyou kindly.

Yes. Since the kernel is set to that speed by default, it'll stay so until you change it manually. CPU control apps may only do that since the kernel only allows that speed as the max (so there's nowhere but down ). There will be no conflict. You can only change it to frequencies the kernel allows.
Ty!
Perfect! thanks for the answer Theonew. Im going to play around with underclocking it
I would love to tune the cpu voltage but just don't have the cojones. Has it become safer in recent times? The guides I read on google are from a few years back. I understand there are risks like SoD sleep of death, maybe other risks too. Any tips?
Thanks again, You guys are great what a wealth of knowledge!
I love tuning.
If you do that, make sure you do it wisely. Undervolting can be dangerous if not done correctly and could damage your device. Go down in steps and use your device for a while after each step to see its stability. Do not make huge steps. Yes SoDs can occur if it is done too drastically. Read up more and try to learn as much as you can before attempting. Its only as safe as you make it .
You may also want to set profiles in SetCPU e.g. screen off - set the governor to conservative. No problem for the help .
Apps are a great way to go, especially SetCPU since you can make profiles to save battery! I would not mess with the voltage though, you can completely fry your phone permanently... I'd leave that to the pros. Chances are, the person that made the Kernal has all the voltages set properly, so you would only be messing up the work that has already been done for you... Just mess around with different profile settings on SetCPU to get the best battery life/power balance. Also, if you want to save even more battery and gain full control of your phone, check out Tasker! Tasker allows you to automate ANYTHING that you do on a regular basis, including toggling Wifi and bluetooth, and rebooting your phone daily.. or ANYTHING you can think of! Open the Music app when you plug in your headphones, turn on GPS when you open the Maps app.. the possibilities are endless! And it will save your battery! Hope this helps, good luck!

[Q] Basic Battery Saving Tips

I'm sure this question has been answered quite a lot of times on the forums here, but I'd simply like to gather all useful tips for extending my Android device's battery life, from the well-known "Turn off Wi-Fi when you're not around your hotspot" to "Allow only a few background services to run reducing CPU activity etc".
Just simple tweaks that do not require flashing any ROMs or root access in the first place.
Thanks!

Nothing will be as powerfull as rooting your device (I know you didn't want to hear this kind of answer... )
BUT may be u can use some informations:
- Turn mobile network to "2G"
- Disable autosync
- Lower brightness of display
- Reduce "display stay active" time
- When u have an AMOLED display, use a "black" skin for your rom
- Disable wifi notification
- "disable wifi"
- "Allow only a few background services to run"
A real improvement will be:
- root
- uninstall all the stupid preinstalled crap of your stockrom
- disable autostarts you dont need
- may be disable wakelocks of apps you need and which act a lot on their own
- install a kernel which allows you control cpu settings --> Scheduler/Governor + CPU frequencies (lowering CPU freq)
- or setting cpu freq profiles automatically + undervolt system
misc:
get a stronger battery
I hope other members will add some or many more usefull tips

Truth is my device is already rooted with a custom ROM which isn't very stable and it is still in development. This is why I'm asking for a few tips. The battery life is already awful and I don't want to mess up with any system files so just basic tips that will do the trick are needed.

Yes! I am aware that there is already a battery life issue even on Nexus 5 so no matter what ROM it is, if it is baed on 4.4.2 it's going to have battery issues.

[Completed] Taipad 9x kernel help. Not sure if anyone uses this tablet anymore

I used to use this tablet a lot when it was new. It was fast and ran most apps with out any problems. It's been a few years since I used it so I figured I'd turn it on and see how it did with newer apps. Turns out it is quite a bit slower now and games lag more than I was expecting.
I was looking into rooting and putting a custom kernel on it to see if could speed it up a bit. I ran a few rooting apps first and every one said it was already rooted. I haven't changed anything from its default settings so I'm assuming it was done at the factory like that. I've spent some time looking for a custom kernel, but I haven't come up with anything yet. I'm not sure if I need one for what I'm trying to accomplish.
I really just want to increase the CPU clock and if possible the GPU clock speed as well. I tried running "Kernel Adiutor" and "Kernel Toolkit" to change the CPU speed. I was able to change it, but it won't allow me to go higher than the stock 1200mhz. It says it will go up 1440mhz in these apps, but when I set it there it locks up and I have to reboot the tablet.
This isn't that important as I have a new phone I use on a regular basis, but it would be nice to use the tablet again with out the lagginess it has now or less of it anyways.
This info is from the CPU-Z app. If you need more just ask.

Latest version of Set CPU?

Hello I'm looking for Set CPU but all links to Google Play Store appear to be broken, would like a reliable link for this app. Or is this app outdated? In that case would like suggestions for any other app for over locking of CPU. Bear in mind that I am new to the concept. Thanks in advance

Many Smart Pack kernel manager ( my favorite), FKM kernel manager , Ex Kernel manager .
This is a useless app made by Vietnamese people (I'm Vietnamese). It cannot overclock which many people mistakenly believe, and it only has the task of limiting the CPU speed, the CPU speed is managed by the OS and limiting it is a bad way because no matter what task it does it will be slowed down. When idle the CPU will automatically reduce its voltage and speed by OS. Any process no matter how big or small with high CPU speed it will be processed very fast even with small tasks that are reported not to use up CPU but it will still be faster than a slower CPU. Kernel Auditor is also useless.
SetCPU is only usefull if you have a modded kernel with added clocks (some of wich may be way to high for you device so need to be blocked to prevent crashes) and i used this version https://www.mobileapkfree.com/apk/setcpu-for-root-users IT MAY BE MODIFIED AND HAVE A VIRUS OR SOME **** so use at your own risk.
