I have come here for some expert advice.
Before purchasing a new contract phone from O2 UK (Telefonica), I checked if the bootloader on the phone was locked. They assured me it wasn't. I have got the phone up and running and entered the service menu :
Bootloader unlock allowed : No
I want to root this phone and flash a new rom. The existing one is covered in O2 bloatware and branding, even on startup. Is there anything I can without being able to unlock the bootloader? I have seen this method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-m2/help/qa-rooting-locked-bootloader-ota-method-t2999665) for rooting, but I want to change the ROM for a stock kitkat 4.4!?
You can use this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=58099150
To root, but if they say it wasn't, why don't you return it back or let them unlock it.
Good Luck
Xperia M2 D2303 on K.K. 4.4.4
I have rooted my m2 today never done it before. I flashed the internal/journalist 4.3 ftf for 2303 top one in list on flashtool
Then rooted with towel root apk then updated over air to 4.4.2 then to 4.4.4 checked with root checker then download SuperSU but not updated then forced root with flashtool then updated SuperSU binarys fixed ro/RW permissions. Hey presto one rooted m2 on 4.4.4. Use firmware from flashtool can't go wrong.

Hello! sorry for creating a new thread but here it goes.
I bought a M2 xperia and when I reached home I saw that it was carrier locked.
I tried to unlock the boot loader in order to root it but it was a no go.
Eventually I downgraded the firmware to 4.3, rooted it with towelroot and then upgrade it to 4.4 again, the root was still there.
Now my question is, is there any way I could unlock the sim restrictions using my root privileges?
I kinda don't want to pay 30$ for a imei code.
My m2 it's O2 locked, if it has any relevance...
Thank you
Ive found on few sites that my Sony Xperia M2 D2303 with Kitkat should be 18.3.C.0.37 but mine software version is 18.3.1.C.0.21.
Why is it like this? Is there something wrong with my device, is it fully updated to last software version or not?
Also ive checked bootloader unlock status and it says Not allowed.
In the official Sony site ive seen a text that says: "Important note! In order to unlock your Xperia™ M2 you need to be on software version 18.3.C.0.37." - which is different then mine.
I also checked for any updates but there is nonne showing in my sony app.
How can i solve this?
Thanks in advance.

Different terms, different topics.
Let's see, .21 build version number means 4.4.4 KitKat (most updated version of KitKat).
If the unlock allowed device says No, it means you have the SIM Locked, so, you need to contact your carrier provider in order to unlock it and change the status to "yes", so, you could unlock your bootloader without any troubles in the process
Official Sony says you need to be in 4.4.2 or higher build number version, it's not stated you need to be in .37 build number.
Note: 4.4.2 (is precisely .37 build number, but, still .21 or higher works fine with the unlocking).
Regards!
i know its a bit turn off the topic, but while im still here let me ask - Does anyone know is Lolipop gonna come out for M2 or not?
There have been many different statements about this so id like to know once for all, is it or not?

No. It ain't confirmed yet. In some point might show up for our device. But right now there's no confirmation. Just OmniROM, CyanogenMod 12 and FXP AOSP.
If your bootloader unlock allowed says no. Then there is nothing you can do to unlock it. Not even network unlocking your phone will change that. To get bootloader unlock allowed yes buy sim free unlocked device. Most carriers lock down bootloaders hope this answers your questions

But ive hear many times people are "decoding" their phones in order to get SIM free device, why cant i do it?
And is there a way to root my device without unlocking bootloader?
To root you need to search on here plenty of easy to follow tutorials on how to root for locked and unlocked bootloaders.

Under what assumptions you say that? Topics before some guy said that he unlocked its device changing the status of its SIMLock with some code to unlock it. The carrier locks down your phone via SIM, but it doesn't mean you can't unlock it forever. If you "free" it, the problem must be solved. The guy I'm talkin' about, unlock two devices using the same method I'm sayin' here, and the two of them went fine. So, just try. The carrier shouldn't show any troubles in order to disable the SIMLock, it's your right, in fact.
I have been looking around for how to root my Xperia M2 D2303 and I can't find a FULL tutorial anywhere.
1) I tried to unlock the bootloader with Sony's official method, but Sony warned that it only works on build version 18.3.C.0.37, but I am on version 18.3.1.C.1.15 - will it still work?
2) When I tried to boot into flashboot mode, the blue LED came on, but the console on my PC just said "< waiting for device >" when I tried to unlock the bootloader with my key - how do I install the drivers, and which drivers?
Any help is appreciated, I've never rooted a phone before.
If you want to stay Locked Bootloader, download KingRoot
Then I would spend a while reading through the threads on here regarding how to use flashtool and on how to root the m2 that's how I learnt to do mine lots of reading various threads from start to finish and watching a few YouTube videos, here is the way I rooted my own m2 it's pretty easy http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...ne 2 + x-reality+ z3 super vivid, viper audio
Hi guys, just a couple noob questions:
I'm planning to update to Marshmallow but, if I don't like it can I go back to Lollipop?
This is because maybe I'll have bugs like most people here and also because I want to root it(when they find an exploit) and that can only be done while in Lollipop am I right?
Thank you for your help.
Yes you can go back to lollipop if you want by flashing lollipop firmware with flashtool.
There is root for MM.
Is there root?
But I have to unlock the bootloader right? I'll just wait until there's a way to root without doing that.
No that's not right if an exploit is found on marshmallow then there would not be need to go to lollipop unless the exploit was found on lollipop. Also marshmallow has far less bugs than lollipop. But as @gm007 said there is unlocked bootloader root and you can downgrade by flashing firmware with flashtool

In case if you didn't know, if you're waiting for root without unlock because of the loss of functions e.g x-reality etc., check this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z5/development/sony-credentials-restore-unlocking-t3296383
(Sony credentials restore after unlocking the bootloader), It simulates the sony credentials to get the sony functions back.
If you are waiting for different reason, just ignore my post.

how did you find out that your BOOTLOADER unlock is NOT allowed?
anways if your device's bootload cannot be unlocked then you cannot do anything!
however there is only one solution! , DOWNGRADE YOUR DEVICE TO ANDROID 5.1.1 ( use flashtool > Xperifirm > 2015 device z5(samuri)--take firmware "service Exchange Unit" form list(thats android 5.1.1) on which z5 was actually left SONY FACTORY)
once your downloaded firmware, close xperifirm and FLASHTOOL automatically trigger making ftf file for you ,
flash this firmware and TRY ROOTING it with KINGROOT or KINGOROOT , as ANDROID5.x.x had xploits and kingroot and root it.
now you have z5 device ROOTED (LOCKED BOOTLOADER).
and if even KINGROOT have no strategy then I don't have any other options for you

That means by downgrade firmware I can root my device, but no surety for that. And no custom rom also.
I bought a second hand device. Now I am planing to sell it
Thanks for the reply.

all the best, if you wana stick to Xperia Line then I would suggest for you
XZs or XZP
make sure you check the boot unlock status on display pieces, XZs can be rooted after boot is unlocked where XZP , you must buy $20 utility and run it for every update.
BOTH DEVICES , DRMKEYS cannot be BACKED UP
for z5, til XZ, drm keys can backed up!
i have Z5 Docomo AU model SOV32, and i want to custom rom mine, but when i check the Bootloader Status is "No".
So i can't do custom rom it ??
or any tips or way?, to do unlock the bootloader so i can do custom rom.
thanks before, and sorry for my bad english.
any answer for this noob question , many thanks.

No, you cannot install custom ROM on that device . next time when you buy xperia device check Bootloader Status before hand.
No tips, No way. (so said)
I tried this but can't root so far even with Kingroot or KingoRoot.

Xperifirm always give you an option of downloading the latest rom for your device. My device is Sony Z5 so therfore I can donwnload nougat 7.1.1 from experfirm. Now coming to the point as you said earlier about lollipop 5.1.1
How you can download an older version of rom from xperifirm. I never find the way how do you?
