Battery: 3300mAh
Dimensions: 144 x 71.7 x 9.45 mm
Weight: 173 g
The phone has a nice appearance. I would say especially the white version, which I have and which would be to most women and girls liking. The black one will definitely suite men also.
The phone is not so thin as some of the modern models tend to be, but remember we got an increased battery capacity here, which I think is really worth it, and besides the difference isn't that much really.
The body has a metal like edging he buttons on the side are also made to suite it..
On the front we can see three standard silver touch buttons, a speaker, hidden light and proximity sensors.
On the back there's a flashlight, main camera, and a speaker next to it, at the bottom there's the company logo. The back cover really looks nice. It's made of plastic but is shaped like a leather covering with stitching around it, the surface isn't slick ll and the phone is very nice to hold. This type of covering also prevents annoying fingerprints which can be seen on many other models with smooth surfaces.
On the right side there the volume buttons and the power button. The left side is clear.
On the upper edge there's a 3.5 mm headphone socket and microUSB port, on the lower edge there's only the mic.
Under the back cover there are two SIM cards (standard and micro) and microSD slots, and replaceable battery.
This smartphone has a 5'' IPS HD screen, resolution is 1280x720. It also adopts an OGS screen technology, due to which the image on the screen is closer to the surface and looks more real.
Touch panel is capacitive and recognizes 5 points of touching, work very well and precise.
The colors of the screen are saturated and natural.
Brightness can be adjusted in a wide range to your liking from dusk to very bright. There's also the auto-brightness feature available. The screen is clearly visible both indoor and outdoors, even in bright sunlight, due to IPS technology and it's viewing angles are close to maximum of 180°.
The phone has a MTK6582M Quad core CPU, 1.3GHz with Mali-400 GPU. This platform is still frequently used in smartphones as it's power is enough for almost any application or game.
The amount of RAM is 1GB and ROM is 8GB. Internal memory isn't divided into two parts as usual, but has one partition with 5.9 GB space, which is all available for installing applications or saving your own files to it. If you insert a microSD card to extend the phone memory you can also choose it to be the default option for installing applications.
There's only one notice: to see the internal phone memory when connecting to your PC one should choose an “MTP” connection option. If you choose the usual “USB Mass Storage” you'll only see the SD card if you have it installed. But it's not so much of inconvenience I think.
The smartphone's interface works smooth and without any lags, it handles many applications and 3D games with ease. It doesn't overheat under any load.
Here are some general info and synthetic tests results screenshots:
This phone supports two SIM cards in dual stand-by mode, supported frequencies are GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz, WCDMA 850/2100MHz. The signal quality is pretty good, it copes with network connection even in distant places. The front and back speakers are both loud and clear.
WiFi connection is stable, the signal is high in different places of the house.
Bluetooth version is 4.0 and it works with low power consumption due to this protocol, so you can use your accessories more often and for a longer period of time for the same amount of charge.
GPS works good in this model. For the first start it did took some minutes to find and to connect to satellites, now the start takes just less than one. In my location GPS finds 10-11 satellites and maintains the connection with 8-9 outdoors and 4-5 indoors near the window even on a cloudy day.
This smartphone has Android 4.4.2 KitKat installed and it supports the FOTA or wireless firmware update. There are already several firmwares release by the manufactures and available for update.
The manufacturer changes the standard Android interface. In this firmware some additions were made and some standard programs changed.
The firmware includes Google services and Play Store by default. There's also the Beauty Center application which allows to change many aspects of the interface appearance.
This smartphone supports Smart Gesture feature, which is very convenient and allows to turn on the phone or launch some applications by using gestures on the touch panel. There's also the Air-Shuffle function due to which you can control some applications by moving your hand over the phone.
There's also the Hot Knot function available in this smartphone. It's a special protocol with application which allows to share your files with other supported devices fast and convenient.
It also features the OTG function which can come in handy and allows to connect external devices to your phone, such as external memory or a gamepad/keyboard, etc.
The phone has a 5MP front camera and 13MP back with autofocus and flashlight, which are interpolated from 2MP and 8MP correspondingly. The flash is really a bright one and allows to make some night photos. Both cameras are decent for this price and you can make some really good pictures with the main camera if there's enough lighting. This camera also shoots video up to 1080p with 30fps.
The battery has an increased capacity of 3300mAh. It's more than average amount installed in similar smartphones nowadays and this is really convenient, when you can use your phone for a longer period of time without charging.
The smartphone is capable of 7 hours of continuous Youtube video playing or of 4.5 hours of 3D gameplay.
Under the average episodic usage the phone lives for about 2-3 days on one charge, of course it depends on the ways you use it it can last really even longer.
When the phone is idle and in the sleep mode it consumes very little of charge, only several percent a day, so in the time of need it can last more than a week if you'll use it for the calls.
So all in all this model from CUBOT appeared to be a good choice. It's not only pleasing to the eyes but also has decent specifications.

Excellent Review

We have seen dozens of 8 inch tablets this year, but the category gets a new spin with the Iaiwai MiniPad AW920. Iaiwai, the Hong Kong based electronic technology company, manages to pack in a slew of ports and slot in a well-designed, compact model. Iaiwai AW920 also happens to be the first 8 inch tablet entering into the market with Android4.1. However, as most of other peer 8 inch tablets have already received a Jellybean update, this cannot be taken as an advantage.
1. Specs and Design
Iaiwai has really taken its time to bring AW920 to the market without hitting it in a rush. And the extra time shows through in the solid build and exquisite design of this tablet. The most stunning part of the design has to be the colorful metal back cover, which helps the device stand out from its competitions.
The MiniPad’s core has a familiar ring to the Chinese tablet fans: a 1.6 GHz dual-core Rockchip RK3066 processor, 1GB of memory, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, an 8-inch XGA display, and a multi-touch touchscreen. Except its popular pop-up video play function, the Jelly Bean operation system is largely unchanged from version4.0.
A few other things caught my eye: AW920 has a 0.3MP front-facing and a 2MP rear-facing camera, stronger than most other 8 inch tablets which only have a front-facing camera.
Also notable is this tablet’s impressive complement of ports and slots. Along the top edge (when holding the tablet in portrait orientation), you have a Micro-HDMI port, charging connector, and micro USB port, headphone jack. On its left edge you will have a TF card slot that supports cards up to 32GB, a very useful feature for a tablet with only 8GB built-in storage. The tablet's stereo speakers are on its back cover, right near those ports and slots.
All of the buttons are located on the right edge, including the power/standby button and two volume buttons. With Jelly Bean, the permanent status bar on the bottom of the screen already has the back button, the home button as well as the menu button, that's why the MiniPad isn’t flooded with physical buttons.
AW920 measures 9.3mm thick, noticeably slimmer than the 9.65mm thick Cube U9GT3 and 9.5mm thick Ployer MOMO8. It weighs 418g, lighter in comparison to most other similar-sized tablets with a metal back cover.
I found the AW920's display to be a pleasure to view looking straight ahead, color saturation and brightness are really quite good. With the definition being XGA on an 8 inch display, the image also looks pretty sharp.
However, the viewing angle is one of the tablet’s greatest weaknesses, looking from the angle below or right, image fainting becomes noticeable. (Vertical rather than portrait orientation)
2. Operating System and Software
Android4.1 looks and feels like ICS. There's not a whole lot that's clearly different on the outside. At the bottom of the screen, you'll find a permanent control bar that includes virtual back and home buttons, as well as an icon that brings up a list of open apps, which can be closed with a swipe to the right.
Meanwhile, tapping the lower right part of the screen (with the clock, Wi-Fi, and battery indicators) brings up the notifications box, which includes quick controls for turning on/off Wi-Fi, quiet, and screen rotation lock, among other features, plus you can access the brightness setting on the fly and tap into the full Settings menu.
The only thing that clearly separates Jelly Bean from ICS is the Pop-up play function, which allows users to watch videos while browsing the web, reading E-books or even playing games.
In addition to the original jellybean UI, Iaiwai has also designed the uniqueYUI cloud desktop, and offers a batch of new functions, such as a digital administration center, which allows your MiniPad to get access to other internet devices, including your PC, a voice control app which eliminates the need of typing under certain circumstances.
What is most amazing is that it is easy to switch from one desktop to the other by just touching the icon on the home screen. For people more accustomed to the sloppiness of the original ICS UI, the customized YUI desktop will also be an ease to learn.
3. Hardware Capability
Like many other 8-inch tablets coming out this year, AW920 is powered by the peppy Rockchip RK3066 Dual core 1.6G processor (GPU: [email protected]) and 1GB DDR3 RAM @1033MHZ. Although it does not blow anybody out of the water, especially as many tablets are coming out with more powerful quad-core processors and 2GB RAM, it still provides plenty of power to run the device smoothly over a wide variety of applications.
According to numerous benchmark tests, the Minipad performed better than almost all android devices with other dual core processor, the monstrous Mali-400 MP4 that also powers the incomparable Samsung Exynos 4410 really assist in crushing the other competitions.
Through my own personal experience with AW920, the power of RK3066 doesn’t only show in benchmark scores, whether playing video games or browsing the internet, AW920 never disappoints. Fluency and touch control acuteness can be fully guaranteed, the G-sensor is very responsive, too.
When it comes to video playback, AW920 is even more powerful, the RK3066 processor easily supports all format of videos to at least 1080P through hardware decoding. Watching online videos through both applications and webpages with the AW920 is also more pleasurable than most other android devices.
4. Internet and Connectivity
With many Chinese tablets falling short on WIFI connectivity, one may easily make the presumption that MiniPad’s connectivity also disappoint. However, this is nowhere near the truth. AW920’s wifi connectivity is as good as that of Samsung Galaxy tab, streets ahead of the peer competitions such as Cube U9GT3 and MOMO8. The metal back cover which is widely criticized for blocking the connections for U9GT3, is no obstacle for MiniPad at all. Even with a wall between the device and the WIFI router, a circumstance where Cube U9GT3's data reception fails, the MiniPad holds its ground, providing smooth online video streaming and web-browsing.
Only a stock Jelly Bean Browser comes preinstalled on AW920, offering the popular up-tabbed browsing and supporting Adobe Flash 11. Dolphin and Chrome can also be installed to your personal preference, well, it’s android, remember!
5. Camera
As is mentioned earlier, AW920 has both a 0.3mp front-facing camera which is designed for online video chatting and a 2mp rear-facing camera which could be used for taking pictures. As expected, neither camera brings any pleasant surprises. Images taken by the rear camera are far from being sharp, the front-facing camera cannot even provide clear facial images during online video chatting.
6. Battery Life
The AW920 features a 4500mAh Li-Polymer battery, the same with Cube U9GT3. Before discussing the MiniPad’s battery life, I have to throw some stones at the low efficiency of its charging. Fortunately, AW920 can be charged while it is shutdown. During its charging, the indicator lamp will light up in red, the light will automatically extinguish when the charging is complete. Unfortunately, charging while shutdown doesn’t mean high efficiency, at least not for AW920, a complete battery charge can take up to 6 hours with a 5V-2Ah charger.
Like its 8 inch peer, the Cube Cherry, AW920’s battery life does not disappoint, it can offer 6 and half hours of 720P video playing with 50% of screen brightness and full volume on a charge. The MiniPad does not have to be charged more than once a day if there isn't any intense use.
7. Specific Applications
Unlike other Chinese tablet makers who don’t have their own applications, Iaiwai has shown much more R&D capability. Aw920 comes preinstalled with several applications specifically designed for Minipads.
Intelligent Home:
The Intelligent Home app, which has already been seen on the 7 inch Iaiwai AW900, aims to create a more comfortable lifestyle. Lighting, air conditioning and other electric appliances can be controlled via the internet with an Iaiwai tablet. And Iaiwai has set up two test rooms in Shenzhen, China to demonstrate the idea of intelligent home. Imagine turning on your air-conditioner 10 minutes before you get home, or showing just taken photos on your television to family, or turning off all the lighting in your house without leaving your bed....You cannot help but fall in love with this concept.
Voice Search
Iaiwai has taken the famous Google Voice search to a whole new level. With the touch of the voice search icon, located at the bottom of the YUI desktop, you can tell the MiniPad the application you wish to launch. This can save you a lot of time if your tablet is overflowed with applications.
Voice search also works in the Iaiwai Minipad Free Market, where users have the choice of tens of thousands of free applications, you tell the market app what you want, and the search results will be shown within one second.
8. Verdict
Like many of its 8 inch rivalries, Iaiwai AW920 is priced at 127 USD, a very modest pricing for a quite well-known brand. The advantages and disadvantages of this product are all quite obvious. Even with such a low price, I still cannot help but worry about the market prospects of this tablet.
We liked:
Well–designed and solidly built model, sanded metal back cover and lively back colors
A slew of useful ports and slots
Front-facing and rear-facing cameras
YUI desktop and specific applications
We disliked:
TFT display with poor viewing angles (mainly below and right angle)
Only 8 GB built-in storage
Low efficiency in charging
Poor image quality of the rear-facing camera
iaiwai aw920
Hello,
I read the review about the iaiwai AW920. I bought one but what I miss is an Windows USB driver for running the App I made.
Do you know how to find this driver on the iaiwai AW 920 ? Other wise I can't use the divice.
Thanks Peter
Disappointment
I bought this tablet in January '13 and for the first month it seemed great except that I could never figure out how to remove the newsfeed and weather box on the homepage that are in Chinese. Then the disappointments set in. The battery wouldn't hold a charge, the system kept locking up. Removing the majority of the apps I'd downloaded made it run a little smoother, but the charging is still an issue. It might have been a good tablet for the price range, but I wish I'd saved a little longer and gotten a Galaxy Tab or a Kindle Fire. Works okay as an E-reader with the BN app and the Kindle app, but not good for much else and the battery life isn't long enough to even be truly effective for that. The best thing about this tablet is the pretty turquoise back.

3. Surprisingly good loud speakers
4. Contains microSD card slot
Cons
1. Below average cameras
2. Only 4GB of internal storage
3. Below average cell reception
Unboxing
The box contains the followings:
- Device (With screen protector)
- Charger
- USB cable
- Stereo Headset
- Battery
- Manual
I liked that the device came with its own screen protector (it is applied and all you have to do to is to peel the top layer)
Design & Controls

The device is a bit on the heavy side but feels good in the hand, I even dare to say that it looks and feels much better than my trusted Samsung Galaxy S3.
The back cover is plastic white; the front has the black bezel around the screen and a horizontal white strip at the bottom that gives nice contrast, very pleasant to look at.
On the bottom of the device you will find the micro-USB port, the left contains the volume up and down buttons, the top includes the 3.5 Audio Jack and on the right the power/lock button.
The front contains the 3 capacitive buttons (Menu, Home and Back) that light up when the device is on, also at the top it contains the front facing 1.3MP camera while the back of the device contain the 8MP camera.
Opening the back cover uncovers the 2 slots for the sim cards and one slot for the microSD card for external storage
Display
The cube Talk 5H is built around a 5.5" IPS touchscreen display with resolution of 1280*720. The pixel density clocks at 267.02 ppi which is not bad at all for a device at this price point.
Resolution aside, the device’s display is vividly gorgeous; it has great colors reproduction, great brightness and great viewing angles.
The blacks are at relatively deep consideration that its an IPS display and not an AMOLED display.
Battery Life
The capacity of the battery is 2500 mAH, and it held reasonably well.
The below information is coming from 6 hours and 20 mins usage, the usage included the following
- Both sim cards are operational, one with 2G and the other with 3G
- About 3 hours WiFi
- A lot of time in searching for network signals while indoors
- Ongoing Whatsapp messaging
- Facebook / Instagram frequent checks
- Couple of incoming calls and SMS
- Couple of Pictures taken
After the above usage, I got to 46% at 2:48PM coming from a full charge 6 hours and 20 minutes earlier, I can say that the 2500mAh Li-Po battery puts up a reasonable fight.
Software & UI
My device came with standard android 4.2.1 along with MiHome (MiUi Launcher) I have to say, that at first I hated the multiple colors everywhere, the UI looked ridiculously / cartoonishly colorful for my taste, but it grew on me and I started to like it.
The software came with some Chinese apps that I have no use for, luckily (since its android 4.2.1) you can easily go to the applications menu from settings and disable any system application you deem useless.
The MiHome is simple .. you have multiple home screens, all the apps will go into them (no apps drawer), and you can put widgets on your home screen, when you think about it, its like iOS interface but with widget support.
Useful gestures are included as well (customizable also) you swipe down from anywhere in the home screen you get notification, you swipe up you get T9 keyboard to search for anything on your phone (music, apps, .. etc)
Notification bar is standard android, you swipe with one finger you get the normal notifications, you swipe with 2 you get the quick toggles.
Of course you can customize the wallpapers and lock screens with any wallpaper you like, you can even download some from the integrated wallpapers market (text is Chinese but its easy to navigate the market following icons)
On paper, the Cube Talk 5H boasts a quad-core 1.2Ghz CPU and 1GB of RAM, the phone ran its Android 4.2.1 operating system buttery smooth, I have not experienced any form of lag when using the device (I wish I could say the same about my galaxy s3 and its laggy touch wiz interface).
Antutu Benchmark
The device might be categorize by some as an “Entry” level phone, but its benchmark performance is not too shabby, I got 13577 points, little below HTC One X which was a flagship device not too long ago
CameraThe device’s 8MP camera is below average, the pictures are grainy, and details are little in average lighting conditions, so if you are looking to take great pictures and selfies, this phone is not for you.
This is a perfect example on how mega-pixels count is not really the important thing in a camera, comparing this 8MP camera with Samsung Galaxy S3 8MP camera is like comparing night and day in terms of quality of the picture.
The camera has HD Video recording, frame rates are ok but quality is below average as well.
The below shots taken in same lighting conditions, and a subsection is zoomed 300% on the lower right corner.
2 more shots from Cube Talk 5H camera attached
I believe you got the picture, camera wise, nothing to write home about.
Connectivity & ReceptionThe device supports 2G and 3G (no 4G), Wifi and Bluetooth (no NFC).
Wifi and Bluetooth work as expected, I haven’t had any issue with Wifi range, its comparable to my Galaxy S3.
The device’s cell reception is not as strong as my other phones (Samsung Galaxy S3, and Nokia E75) the cell reception coverage in my area is about average, on a normal phone I get 3-4 bars (out of 4) while outdoors, and 1-3 bars while indoors (never zero bars).
The Cube Talk 5H gets full bars while outdoors, but when indoors, the cell reception signals drops significantly, and a lot of times it becomes zero bars, I tested this with my 2 SIMs from different mobile operators and both exhibit the same issues but in different areas (since both have different coverage strength), this issue has annoyed me and I suspect its something to do with the baseband version I have, I will need to find an updated one and flash it to my phone and see if it makes a difference.
ROMs
What good is android if you cant change ROMs eh?
My device came with stock 4.2.1 with MiHome Launcher,.. if that is not your cup of tea (or coffee depending on where are you from lol), there are already a lot of roms available to be installed on this device including:
- MiUi V5 Rom and many themes
- Stock Android (with Stock Launcher)
- Sony Xperia C Rom
- Baidu Cloud OS
- OPPO Color OS
- Touchwiz Rom
Root and recovery info can be found here
Conclusion and TL;DR
Cube Talk 5H has quad-core 1.2GHz CPU, 1GB RAM, Beautiful 5.5" IPS display with android 4.2.1, dual SIM slots and all of that for under 200 USD
Cube Talk 5H is perfect for you if:
- You want beefy specs for reasonable price (less than 200 USD)
- You have 2 Sim cards and you do not want to carry 2 phones
- You like massive 5.5” display for a phone
Cube Talk 5H is not for you if:
- You have weak cell reception coverage in your area
- You want a high end camera phone
- You want 4G
I like this phone.
very nicely written!
NIce review
Is anyone else running MIUI rom off the Cube forum?
It's running very smooth and everything works but I just don't get the weekly updates.

A 5inch touch screen smartphone running on android 4.2.9 Jellybean
http://www.tmart.co.uk/Doogee-DG201...ar-Smartphone-EU-Standard-Yellow_p242376.html
My review:
This is the first android smartphone i have received from Tmart. The tablet arrived in a box packed neatly with all the accessories as seen in the pictures. The phone screen was wrapped with a plastic cover to protect the screen; on top of that, there was already a screen protector applied on the phone. This leaves the phone screen well protected from day 1 and also removes the need for me to get a screen protector.
Design and Display:
The DG2014 is a beautifully designed device with the dimensions, 143 x 71 x 6.3 mm. It has a rectangular shape in front and curves slightly at the back to enhance the user's grip. Weighing only 145g(with battery), it is also a fairly light device making it comfortable to hold. The sides of the device and made of metal giving the device a classy look although the back cover is made of polycarbonate. The power button is located at the left side of the device while the volume up and down button is located at the right side of the device.
The volume up and down button is 2 separate buttons making it extremely easy to press. In the front of the device, there are 3back-lit touch keys at the bottom, “Menu”, “Home” and the “back” button. All the physical buttons are made of metal giving us a good feel.
The large 5-inch HD IPS OGS screen has a resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels with 16million screen colours. Picture quality on this screen is simply amazing and the screen is able to reproduce colours very well. The brightness can also be increased to very high hence allowing the user to see the screen even under sunlight.
Camera:
The DG2014 has both rear and front cameras. The front camera is 5megapixel while the back camera is a 13megapixel. With these 2 cameras, the user is able to capture high quality images using the rear camera or can even take selfies using the impressive 5megapixel camera. The quality of the image will be great. The back camera also has a led flash light to enable users to take picture in the dark.
i have added some sample shots taken by the rear camera below
Speakers:
The DG2014 has a back speaker which is able to provide decent music playback. Sounds are quite loud and crisp.
Processor and Graphics:
Equipped with a MTK6582 Cortex A7 Quad-core, 1.3GHz processor, the phone is very fast and loads applications quickly without lagging. The GPU is a Mali-400 MP which is able to run most games extremely well. Games such as “angry birds” and “cut the rope” runs smoothly on this phone. 3D games like minion rush are also able to load without problems.
Features of the phone:
Dual Sim – Allows for 2 sim cards to be using simultaneously
GPS and AGPS – Accurate location tracking when using apps such as google maps
Wifi+Bluetooth – Allows user to stay connected on the internet or to transfer data via Bluetooth
Network – Supports GPRS/HSDPA+/EDGE
FM Radio – Able to listen to radio on the go
1Gb Ram – Able to multi-task
Storage Space -4gb(phone storage) + 3gb(internal storage) + external sd card slot(up to 32gb) – Able to store your data with no problems on this phone. You wont have to worry about the lack of storage space
Detailed Specifications can be found on Tmart/Doogee website
Package Includes
1 x Cellphone
1 x Earphones
1 x Battery
1 x USB Cable
1 x Euro Standard Power Adapter
1 x Protective Film

Conclusion
The DG2014 is a mid-tier phone with very good specifications. Priced competitively at only 211SGD, it is a value for money. It also has a very nice ultra thin design making it looks aesthetically pleasing. I would strongly recommend this phone to anyone who has a low budget but wants a decent smartphone

[Review] THL T6 PRO, MTK6592M Octa-core, 5'' HD IPS Screen, 1GB RAM/8GB ROM

Hello to everyone! I recently received THL T6 Pro smartphone. Seems that some users are interested in its features and more indepth description, so I decided to post a text review here, highlighting all the features, which users asked about in other discussion topics. Mod Edit: Commercial links removed.
So, let's start.
Free shipping was fast and took only 11 days. The packaging was very good and nothing got damaged.
Inside the box one will find: the phone itself, plastic bumper, additional protective film, charger, USB-microUSB cable, headset and starter manual. Now besides this they provide a 8GB SDcard as a gift in the package.

- OS: Android 4.4.2
- CPU: MTK6592M Cortex A7 Octa-core CPU, 1.4GHz
- GPU: Mali-450 MP4
- RAM: 1GB
- ROM: 8GB (microSD up to 32GB)
- Screen: 5.0" IPS HD 720р, 5 points capacitive multitouch
- Networks: GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz, WCDMA 900/2100MHz
- GPS + Bluetooth 4.0
- WiFi: 802.11b/g/n
- WiFi Display, Smart Gesture, Multitasking Window
- Rear camera: 8.0MP, AF + flashlight
- Front camera: 2.0MP
- Two SIM card slots
- Battery: 1900 mAh
- Dimensions: 143 x 71 x 9 mm
- Weight: 155 g
The phone has a thin strict body with right angles. There's a metal like edging on both sides with dark plastic inserts inside it.
On the front there are three standard silver touch buttons, a speaker, hidden light and proximity sensors and notification light, which has red color.
The model is called black, and it seems that it is in the dark light, but if you put it under the bright light or sun, you'll see it's body sparkling and actually dark blue.
On the back we have the main camera, flashlight and the speaker at the bottom. The coverage isn't slick and the phone is nice to hold.
On the left side there are the volume buttons, on the right – the power button.
On the upper edge there's a 3.5 mm headphone socket and microUSB port, on the lower edge there's only the mic.
Under the back cover there are two SIM cards and microSD slots, and replaceable battery.
This smartphone has a 5'' IPS HD (1280 x 720) screen with 5 points capacitive multitouch, which work very well and precise.
The colors of the screen are vivid and natural, the white color is real and not blueish or yellowish as in some other devices.
The brightness can be adjusted in a very wide range from really dusk to very bright. You can pick it to your liking or just use the auto-brightness feature. Due to IPS technology the screen is clearly visible both indoor and outdoors, even in bright sunlight. The viewing angles are good.
The phone has a comparatively new MTK6592M Cortex A7 Octa core CPU, 1.4GHz and Mali-450 MP4 GPU. The advantage of this CPU is the new power saving technology: it automatically adjusts the number of working cores according to the process loading, so when the phone is in sleep mode or almost idle only one core is active, and then when needed CPU turns on more cores one by one.
The amount of RAM is 1GB and ROM is 8GB. Internal memory is divided into two parts: system memory partition has 2GB and the user partition has 4.28GB of free space.
The smartphone works smooth and fast, it handles all applications and 3D games without any problems. Here are some general info ant synthetic tests results screenshots:
This phone supports two SIM cards, supported frequencies are GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz, WCDMA 900/2100MHz. The signal quality is pretty good, the phone never lost network connection while using it for two weeks now. Both speakers and the mic quality is decent. The back speaker is loud and clear.
WiFi connection is stable, the signal is high in different places of the house.
Bluetooth version is 4.0 and it works fine.
GPS works good. For the first start it took some minutes to find and to connect to several satellites, now the start takes just some seconds. In my location GPS finds 10-11 satellites and maintains the connection with 8-9 outdoors and 4-5 indoors near the window.
This smartphone has such features additional features as WiFi Display, Smart Gesture, Multitasking Window. Due to WiFi Display you can transfer the picture from the phone to supporting devices.
Smart Gesture allows you to light the screen or launch some applications from the locked screen, you just have to tap twice or draw some letter or gesture.
Multitasking Window feature appears like a side menu, which you can move around the screen to the place you like, and allows to launch some applications in the floating window.
You can turn off all these features if you don't need them.
In the stock firmware there are the standard applications, including Google Services, Play Market and Skype installed, as well as several boosting applications as DU Speed Booster, Clean Master. If you don't need any of the third party pre-installed applications you can easily delete any you like from the standard apps management menu.
The phone has a 2MP front camera and 8MP back with autofocus and flashlight. Both cameras are decent for this price. You can make some really good pictures with the main camera if there's enough lighting. This camera also shoots the video up to 1080p, but for now only with 15fps. Maybe it will be fixed in future stock or custom firmwares.
Here are some pictures examples:
Front Camera:
The battery is 1900 mAh. It's average, nowadays many low-end phones have similar or even smaller capacity. Here are results from Atutu Battery Test:
Unfortunately the battery consumption by time graph was removed from the firmware's menu by the manufacturer, but you can use some thirdparty application to see it.
With the average episodic usage the phone lives for about 1 or 2 days on one charge, of course it depends on the ways you use it. If you want to use this phone constantly for a long time you'll need a power bank definitely.
When the phone is idle and in the sleep mode it consumes very little of charge, only several percent a day, which is due to the new power saving CPU.
Summing up, I can say that this new model from THL turned out to be a good one. For now it seems to be the cheapest octacore phone with HD screen.
How is it holding up now that you've had it for a while - particularly call and data quality?

That's good to hear. I'm really on the fence because this would just be purely a backup phone, but one with octa core, but a 120 bucks is still 120 bucks.
I don't see any other device listed under your profile, so have you compared it to other high-end, quad-core phones? I see the benchmarks, but can you really feel and see a difference in speed of apps, etc. or is 8 cores just mostly a marketing gimmick (even if it is a solid phone otherwise?)
TIA

Is the Umi Hammer S an impersonation?

I found a review on the new-ish Umi Hammer S. Does anyone else think the Umi Hammer S looks a lot like an HTC phone, specifically the m9 or m9 plus?

Personally, I think they're trying to emulate Samsung rather than HTC.

How so?
The camera module design, as well as button placement and lack of front facing speakers.

Unboxing & Video Review:
Review Umi Hammer S
Package, Content, Aesthetics:[/ B]
The pack is a classic for the latest products Umi, a square box of a generous size with treatment embossed silver; on the rear we find a label with the model and IMEI numbers.
Box contents: Smartphone, 1 Power Adapter with USB socket EU 5V 1A, 1 USB cable Type-C, 1 booklet indicating the specifications of the smartphone and the arrangement of the various buttons / functions. There aren’t any additional film protector (1 is applied) and there are no headphones.
- External dimensions of the smartphone in line with other 5.5 "; it measures 154 x 77.4 x 8.5 mm for just over 200g of weight.
- Construction of good quality, use of materials pleasant to the touch and the side frame in aluminum.
- On the left side we find keys, and the right side we find the volume rocker on the top and the power button slightly lower.
- On the upper side we find the audio jack and the infrared emitter; on the underside of the microphone, the speaker and port USB type-c.
- In the back at the top center are slightly protruding from the camera 8 megapixel f / 2 sony imx164 (13 megapixel interpolated) and dual LED flash (not dual tone), and slightly below the fingerprint sensor.
- In the front we find the earpiece at the top, the camera 5 megapixel f / 2.4 fixed focus but with face detection and light sensors / proximity.
- The soft touch buttons are not backlighted.
- Cover fairly thin but with good interlocking with the body; It is smooth and quite slippery, but does not retain fingerprints (at least the white version). The physical buttons are directly on the external metal frame.
- External glass with rounded edges 2.5D with pre-applied film from the house offering a good flow and has a minimum of oleophobic treatment; no other films in the package.
- Display brightness is good, good viewing angle; HD IPS LCD screen with colors and sharpness well played good for the category.
- Touch-sensitive and comes with multitouch 5 touches, writing rapidly and with Swype function that you type with two fingers (Google keyboard used)
- Two sim slots: Both Micro Sim 4G (with dynamic selection software).
- Presence MicroSD slot with a capacity of 32Gb (I tested Samsung 64Gb and is properly recorded).
- Removable battery (weight about 55g) from 3200mAh declared, to the test with amperemether, we found about 3100mAh; Geekbench test has been very positive with more than 12 hours of screen on time.
- Android 5.1 without any customization and launcher 3 (to be replaced immediately with something better like Nova, Apus, Cm Launcher).
- Open the app and switch between apps very quickly, stock browser with a few bumps as always (we recommend Chrome). Task manager by pressing and holding the center button and option to clear all apps.
- Excellent management 16Gb of internal ROM that are available in a partition to 11.7 GB for apps and data.
- Good management 2Gb ram by Android 5.1 .. more than 1.5 Gb ram free after loading some apps into memory at startup.
Connectivity:
WiFi b / g with no problem stable signal, good power and coverage (not tested it in wifi dual band).
BT 4 tested pairing with headsets and car, also easily transfer with other Bluetooth smartphones
OTG: not tested because of the lack of USB adapter Type-C -> Micro USB
GPS: understated, cold quick fix in about 30 seconds but poor precision and tendency to lose the fix; we hope for a software fix.
Camera:
- Main camera Sony 8Mpixel f / 2 (13Mpixel interpolated) that produces valid shots with daylight; good focus and flash of good power; interface camera classic mediatek poor options; when using the flash or light conditions unfavorable, the quality of the shots falls but not overly, interesting seal at high ISO that allows to bring home click the "acceptable" even 1200 ISO.
- Sufficient video performance, slightly slow the focus and during the displacement along the axis of rotation, is present shuttering; the highest resolution of video is only HD .
- Secondary camera for Selfie 5 megapixel without autofocus but with face recognition, quality of the shots enough for video calls to some emergency selfie with good light.
Shots uncompressed:

[/ Spoiler]
Bench:
Antutu 5.7.1 over 20000 points; in line with other cpu quad core 1GHz MT6753P
