A 5inch touch screen smartphone running on android 4.2.9 Jellybean
http://www.tmart.co.uk/Doogee-DG201...ar-Smartphone-EU-Standard-Yellow_p242376.html
My review:
This is the first android smartphone i have received from Tmart. The tablet arrived in a box packed neatly with all the accessories as seen in the pictures. The phone screen was wrapped with a plastic cover to protect the screen; on top of that, there was already a screen protector applied on the phone. This leaves the phone screen well protected from day 1 and also removes the need for me to get a screen protector.
Design and Display:
The DG2014 is a beautifully designed device with the dimensions, 143 x 71 x 6.3 mm. It has a rectangular shape in front and curves slightly at the back to enhance the user's grip. Weighing only 145g(with battery), it is also a fairly light device making it comfortable to hold. The sides of the device and made of metal giving the device a classy look although the back cover is made of polycarbonate. The power button is located at the left side of the device while the volume up and down button is located at the right side of the device.
The volume up and down button is 2 separate buttons making it extremely easy to press. In the front of the device, there are 3back-lit touch keys at the bottom, “Menu”, “Home” and the “back” button. All the physical buttons are made of metal giving us a good feel.
The large 5-inch HD IPS OGS screen has a resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels with 16million screen colours. Picture quality on this screen is simply amazing and the screen is able to reproduce colours very well. The brightness can also be increased to very high hence allowing the user to see the screen even under sunlight.
Camera:
The DG2014 has both rear and front cameras. The front camera is 5megapixel while the back camera is a 13megapixel. With these 2 cameras, the user is able to capture high quality images using the rear camera or can even take selfies using the impressive 5megapixel camera. The quality of the image will be great. The back camera also has a led flash light to enable users to take picture in the dark.
i have added some sample shots taken by the rear camera below
Speakers:
The DG2014 has a back speaker which is able to provide decent music playback. Sounds are quite loud and crisp.
Processor and Graphics:
Equipped with a MTK6582 Cortex A7 Quad-core, 1.3GHz processor, the phone is very fast and loads applications quickly without lagging. The GPU is a Mali-400 MP which is able to run most games extremely well. Games such as “angry birds” and “cut the rope” runs smoothly on this phone. 3D games like minion rush are also able to load without problems.
Features of the phone:
Dual Sim – Allows for 2 sim cards to be using simultaneously
GPS and AGPS – Accurate location tracking when using apps such as google maps
Wifi+Bluetooth – Allows user to stay connected on the internet or to transfer data via Bluetooth
Network – Supports GPRS/HSDPA+/EDGE
FM Radio – Able to listen to radio on the go
1Gb Ram – Able to multi-task
Storage Space -4gb(phone storage) + 3gb(internal storage) + external sd card slot(up to 32gb) – Able to store your data with no problems on this phone. You wont have to worry about the lack of storage space
Detailed Specifications can be found on Tmart/Doogee website
Package Includes
1 x Cellphone
1 x Earphones
1 x Battery
1 x USB Cable
1 x Euro Standard Power Adapter
1 x Protective Film
1 x User Manual
Conclusion
The DG2014 is a mid-tier phone with very good specifications. Priced competitively at only 211SGD, it is a value for money. It also has a very nice ultra thin design making it looks aesthetically pleasing. I would strongly recommend this phone to anyone who has a low budget but wants a decent smartphone

Design:
It’s too thin that is my first impression when I saw it. The thickness is only 7mm so that we can put it into wallet. The USB jack and headphone jack is in the top. Maybe the headphone is a little small; it’s not easy insert the headphone. The frame is made of metal and we can find the power button and volume buttons on it. However, it is difficult to press these buttons down. The features of the back include main camera, dual LED light, logo and speaker. We can remove the rear cover to replace battery, SIM and Micro SD. It’s a great design to somebody who wishes to get long battery.

Display:
5’’ IPS QHD 960x540 display. It is enough big to view video with 5 inch screen. However, the definition is disappointing because it’s only 960 x 540. Most of the IPS display is good at view angles. Of course, this display also is great at view angles. What’s more, the brightness is OK. We can see the text clearly even in high light. As for color reproduction, it’s amazing.
Camera:
There are four modes in camera including Panorama mode, Face beauty mode, Live Photo mode and Normal mode. In the Panorama mode, we can take many photos, and then combine with these photos to get a bigger photo. If we want to become more beautiful in photo, we should choose the Face beauty mode. The live photo mode is interesting. In this mode, we can get a live photo when take photos. We can adjust the white balance and ISO to adjust to different scene for better photos in normal mode.
View attachment 2818122View attachment 2818123View attachment 2818126
We review the phone in normal light and low light. The result is disappointing. Speed is slowly in normal light and the resolution is not enough. It’s worse in low light. The camera even can’t focus in low light and there are so many noisy points. The sample is dark when ISO is 400. And then we adjust the ISO to 800, the sample becomes light but more noisy points. It’s only praiseworthy that taking and saving photos is quickly.
View attachment 2818120View attachment 2818121
OS:
The ROM makes some improvements base on Android 4.4. It’s very smooth and concise on the whole. There are many beautiful wallpapers for choosing. Many interesting widgets are prepared for you to show your character. The interface of music player is succinct and tone quality is well. Besides, it’s very smooth when we watch video even we speed video. However, the phone became hot after watching video long time.
There are many useful pre-positioned apps such as Gmail, Maps, and Sound Recorder.
View attachment 2818127View attachment 2818129View attachment 2818131
Battery:
The thickness is too thin to the battery is only 1950mah. However, the screen resolution is low and MTK6582 is power saving, so you can charge it once a day even longer time.
Conclusion:
Elephone P10C is stand out at design and ROM, but the camera need to improve. In my opinion, the P10C is worth owning.

This Is How You Are Cheated by "Professional" Reviewers Over Display

I was trying several mobile phones these days and got interested in displays. The following is what i've learned from my experiences plus online information:
It is a very easy work to tell the quality of a display, whether it is equipped on a TV or computer, or a smartphone. Just start up the device, have a look at the user interface, and you’ll get a rough impression, which, in most cases, is true to truth in the end. But there is always someone playing tricks to convince you that his display, which is not good in fact, is good, especially on the Internet.
While most people may not trust advertising maps made by CorelDraw or perfected by Photoshop, reviews do have influence on their choices. If you are going to buy a cheap phone from China, online reviews may be the only path for consultations. Unfortunately, neither all customer reviews come from real customers, nor all professional reviewers tell the whole truth.
For example, two phones with different display resolutions don’t look too different in a photo taken beyond a certain distance. Resolution, such as 1280x720 pixels, means the number of color points (pixels) that compose an image. The more pixels, the more details of a picture are shown, but when the distance between your eyes and the screen is long, the details are not so distinguishable. In most cases, we use mobile phones in a close distance.
A little theoretical? OK, I’ll compare two phones of the same 5-inch screen size but different resolutions for demonstration, namely, Axgio Neon N1 with 1280 x 720 display (HD or 720p) and THL T6S with 854x480 (480P).
I downloaded a 1920x1080 (Full HD or 1080P) picture from the Web and put its copies into both the two phones aforementioned. It’s hard to see how the Neon N1 has better performance than T6S in the first photo when my camera was held a little far from them. But in the second photo, the grass is sharp on Axgio Neon N1’s HD display, while it is a mass on THL T6S.

Well, apart from grass, there are some scenes with smooth surface to obscure the gap between high and low resolutions even in close look, such as the sea. Smooth surface means that the colors of neighboring pixels are very similar or the same, thus the reduction in pixels may not affect the visual impressions very much.
But believe me, your eyes are more sensitive than cameras to such changes, which can be better defined in macro photos. Now you can see that the Neon N1’s 720P display has high integrity while there is mosaic with the T6S’ 480P resolution.
An HD display has about 900 thousand pixels ( 1,280x720=921,600), while a 480P display has only 400 thousand. Apparently, pixels are one time more closely arranged on a 720p display, where it’s not very easy to distinguish one pixel from others. On the other hand, there is no doubt that 480P or 540P (QHD, 960x540) screens deliver granules to your eyes in daily use.
Macro photos may be the best way to show display quality in the aspect of sharpness. For example, displays with the same face-value resolution may have varied performance in practice, while a responsible reviewer may use macro photos to make the disparity visible.
OK, let me add a 1080P display from Huawei Honor 6 before my close-up lens for a conclusion: 480P and QHD, with obvious granules; 720P HD, smooth; 1080P FHD, impressive.
I didn’t mean to say THL T6S was equipped with a bad display. On the contrary, it performs quite well at its native resolution among Chinese phones, just like Axgio Neon N1 and Huawei Honor 6.
Besides real resolution, another factor that concerns users is color. If you ever got interested in photography, you would know that color is highly vulnerable to camera settings. If a professional reviewer modifies settings to enhance contrast or saturation, it’s impossible for ordinary consumers to discern that.
But if someone plays the comparative trick, there is a way to tell. We know that no display can avoid color shift when it is viewed in an acute angle, and it’s where a dishonest reviewer can deceive consumers. He may let his camera and desktop form an acute angle, put a well-reputed phone at the far end, place an advertised phone in the center of the scene, and then shoot a picture showing the false impression that his phone is as good as or even better than the real excellent one.
I’ll still use two Chinese phones to demonstrate the trick. In the first photo, when Axgio Neon N1 was located in a bad place, it looks worse than Cubot X6 (720P display, too). But when my view angle is vertical to the desktop, you can see that the N1 is truer to life.
Again, I appeal that all professional review sites should use macro photos to show display colors, because in such a distance, color shift can be neglected.

- WiFi Display, Smart Gesture, Multitasking Window
- Rear camera: 8.0MP, AF + flashlight
- Front camera: 2.0MP
- Two SIM card slots
- Battery: 1900 mAh
- Dimensions: 143 x 71 x 9 mm
- Weight: 155 g
The phone has a thin strict body with right angles. There's a metal like edging on both sides with dark plastic inserts inside it.
On the front there are three standard silver touch buttons, a speaker, hidden light and proximity sensors and notification light, which has red color.
The model is called black, and it seems that it is in the dark light, but if you put it under the bright light or sun, you'll see it's body sparkling and actually dark blue.
On the back we have the main camera, flashlight and the speaker at the bottom. The coverage isn't slick and the phone is nice to hold.
On the left side there are the volume buttons, on the right – the power button.
On the upper edge there's a 3.5 mm headphone socket and microUSB port, on the lower edge there's only the mic.
Under the back cover there are two SIM cards and microSD slots, and replaceable battery.
This smartphone has a 5'' IPS HD (1280 x 720) screen with 5 points capacitive multitouch, which work very well and precise.
The colors of the screen are vivid and natural, the white color is real and not blueish or yellowish as in some other devices.
The brightness can be adjusted in a very wide range from really dusk to very bright. You can pick it to your liking or just use the auto-brightness feature. Due to IPS technology the screen is clearly visible both indoor and outdoors, even in bright sunlight. The viewing angles are good.
The phone has a comparatively new MTK6592M Cortex A7 Octa core CPU, 1.4GHz and Mali-450 MP4 GPU. The advantage of this CPU is the new power saving technology: it automatically adjusts the number of working cores according to the process loading, so when the phone is in sleep mode or almost idle only one core is active, and then when needed CPU turns on more cores one by one.
The amount of RAM is 1GB and ROM is 8GB. Internal memory is divided into two parts: system memory partition has 2GB and the user partition has 4.28GB of free space.
The smartphone works smooth and fast, it handles all applications and 3D games without any problems. Here are some general info ant synthetic tests results screenshots:
This phone supports two SIM cards, supported frequencies are GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz, WCDMA 900/2100MHz. The signal quality is pretty good, the phone never lost network connection while using it for two weeks now. Both speakers and the mic quality is decent. The back speaker is loud and clear.
WiFi connection is stable, the signal is high in different places of the house.
Bluetooth version is 4.0 and it works fine.
GPS works good. For the first start it took some minutes to find and to connect to several satellites, now the start takes just some seconds. In my location GPS finds 10-11 satellites and maintains the connection with 8-9 outdoors and 4-5 indoors near the window.
This smartphone has such features additional features as WiFi Display, Smart Gesture, Multitasking Window. Due to WiFi Display you can transfer the picture from the phone to supporting devices.
Smart Gesture allows you to light the screen or launch some applications from the locked screen, you just have to tap twice or draw some letter or gesture.
Multitasking Window feature appears like a side menu, which you can move around the screen to the place you like, and allows to launch some applications in the floating window.
You can turn off all these features if you don't need them.
In the stock firmware there are the standard applications, including Google Services, Play Market and Skype installed, as well as several boosting applications as DU Speed Booster, Clean Master. If you don't need any of the third party pre-installed applications you can easily delete any you like from the standard apps management menu.
The phone has a 2MP front camera and 8MP back with autofocus and flashlight. Both cameras are decent for this price. You can make some really good pictures with the main camera if there's enough lighting. This camera also shoots the video up to 1080p, but for now only with 15fps. Maybe it will be fixed in future stock or custom firmwares.
Here are some pictures examples:
Front Camera:
The battery is 1900 mAh. It's average, nowadays many low-end phones have similar or even smaller capacity. Here are results from Atutu Battery Test:
Unfortunately the battery consumption by time graph was removed from the firmware's menu by the manufacturer, but you can use some thirdparty application to see it.
With the average episodic usage the phone lives for about 1 or 2 days on one charge, of course it depends on the ways you use it. If you want to use this phone constantly for a long time you'll need a power bank definitely.
When the phone is idle and in the sleep mode it consumes very little of charge, only several percent a day, which is due to the new power saving CPU.
Summing up, I can say that this new model from THL turned out to be a good one. For now it seems to be the cheapest octacore phone with HD screen.
How is it holding up now that you've had it for a while - particularly call and data quality?

That's good to hear. I'm really on the fence because this would just be purely a backup phone, but one with octa core, but a 120 bucks is still 120 bucks.
I don't see any other device listed under your profile, so have you compared it to other high-end, quad-core phones? I see the benchmarks, but can you really feel and see a difference in speed of apps, etc. or is 8 cores just mostly a marketing gimmick (even if it is a solid phone otherwise?)
TIA

The phone has a nice appearance. I would say especially the white version, which I have and which would be to most women and girls liking. The black one will definitely suite men also.
The phone is not so thin as some of the modern models tend to be, but remember we got an increased battery capacity here, which I think is really worth it, and besides the difference isn't that much really.
The body has a metal like edging he buttons on the side are also made to suite it..
On the front we can see three standard silver touch buttons, a speaker, hidden light and proximity sensors.
On the back there's a flashlight, main camera, and a speaker next to it, at the bottom there's the company logo. The back cover really looks nice. It's made of plastic but is shaped like a leather covering with stitching around it, the surface isn't slick ll and the phone is very nice to hold. This type of covering also prevents annoying fingerprints which can be seen on many other models with smooth surfaces.
On the right side there the volume buttons and the power button. The left side is clear.
On the upper edge there's a 3.5 mm headphone socket and microUSB port, on the lower edge there's only the mic.
Under the back cover there are two SIM cards (standard and micro) and microSD slots, and replaceable battery.
This smartphone has a 5'' IPS HD screen, resolution is 1280x720. It also adopts an OGS screen technology, due to which the image on the screen is closer to the surface and looks more real.
Touch panel is capacitive and recognizes 5 points of touching, work very well and precise.
The colors of the screen are saturated and natural.
Brightness can be adjusted in a wide range to your liking from dusk to very bright. There's also the auto-brightness feature available. The screen is clearly visible both indoor and outdoors, even in bright sunlight, due to IPS technology and it's viewing angles are close to maximum of 180°.
The phone has a MTK6582M Quad core CPU, 1.3GHz with Mali-400 GPU. This platform is still frequently used in smartphones as it's power is enough for almost any application or game.
The amount of RAM is 1GB and ROM is 8GB. Internal memory isn't divided into two parts as usual, but has one partition with 5.9 GB space, which is all available for installing applications or saving your own files to it. If you insert a microSD card to extend the phone memory you can also choose it to be the default option for installing applications.
There's only one notice: to see the internal phone memory when connecting to your PC one should choose an “MTP” connection option. If you choose the usual “USB Mass Storage” you'll only see the SD card if you have it installed. But it's not so much of inconvenience I think.
The smartphone's interface works smooth and without any lags, it handles many applications and 3D games with ease. It doesn't overheat under any load.
Here are some general info and synthetic tests results screenshots:
This phone supports two SIM cards in dual stand-by mode, supported frequencies are GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz, WCDMA 850/2100MHz. The signal quality is pretty good, it copes with network connection even in distant places. The front and back speakers are both loud and clear.
WiFi connection is stable, the signal is high in different places of the house.
Bluetooth version is 4.0 and it works with low power consumption due to this protocol, so you can use your accessories more often and for a longer period of time for the same amount of charge.
GPS works good in this model. For the first start it did took some minutes to find and to connect to satellites, now the start takes just less than one. In my location GPS finds 10-11 satellites and maintains the connection with 8-9 outdoors and 4-5 indoors near the window even on a cloudy day.
This smartphone has Android 4.4.2 KitKat installed and it supports the FOTA or wireless firmware update. There are already several firmwares release by the manufactures and available for update.
The manufacturer changes the standard Android interface. In this firmware some additions were made and some standard programs changed.
The firmware includes Google services and Play Store by default. There's also the Beauty Center application which allows to change many aspects of the interface appearance.
This smartphone supports Smart Gesture feature, which is very convenient and allows to turn on the phone or launch some applications by using gestures on the touch panel. There's also the Air-Shuffle function due to which you can control some applications by moving your hand over the phone.
There's also the Hot Knot function available in this smartphone. It's a special protocol with application which allows to share your files with other supported devices fast and convenient.
It also features the OTG function which can come in handy and allows to connect external devices to your phone, such as external memory or a gamepad/keyboard, etc.
The phone has a 5MP front camera and 13MP back with autofocus and flashlight, which are interpolated from 2MP and 8MP correspondingly. The flash is really a bright one and allows to make some night photos. Both cameras are decent for this price and you can make some really good pictures with the main camera if there's enough lighting. This camera also shoots video up to 1080p with 30fps.
The battery has an increased capacity of 3300mAh. It's more than average amount installed in similar smartphones nowadays and this is really convenient, when you can use your phone for a longer period of time without charging.
The smartphone is capable of 7 hours of continuous Youtube video playing or of 4.5 hours of 3D gameplay.
Under the average episodic usage the phone lives for about 2-3 days on one charge, of course it depends on the ways you use it it can last really even longer.
When the phone is idle and in the sleep mode it consumes very little of charge, only several percent a day, so in the time of need it can last more than a week if you'll use it for the calls.
So all in all this model from CUBOT appeared to be a good choice. It's not only pleasing to the eyes but also has decent specifications.
Excellent Review

I found a review on the new-ish Umi Hammer S. Does anyone else think the Umi Hammer S looks a lot like an HTC phone, specifically the m9 or m9 plus?

Personally, I think they're trying to emulate Samsung rather than HTC.

How so?
The camera module design, as well as button placement and lack of front facing speakers.

Unboxing & Video Review:
Review Umi Hammer S
Package, Content, Aesthetics:[/ B]
The pack is a classic for the latest products Umi, a square box of a generous size with treatment embossed silver; on the rear we find a label with the model and IMEI numbers.
Box contents: Smartphone, 1 Power Adapter with USB socket EU 5V 1A, 1 USB cable Type-C, 1 booklet indicating the specifications of the smartphone and the arrangement of the various buttons / functions. There aren’t any additional film protector (1 is applied) and there are no headphones.
- External dimensions of the smartphone in line with other 5.5 "; it measures 154 x 77.4 x 8.5 mm for just over 200g of weight.
- Construction of good quality, use of materials pleasant to the touch and the side frame in aluminum.
- On the left side we find keys, and the right side we find the volume rocker on the top and the power button slightly lower.
- On the upper side we find the audio jack and the infrared emitter; on the underside of the microphone, the speaker and port USB type-c.
- In the back at the top center are slightly protruding from the camera 8 megapixel f / 2 sony imx164 (13 megapixel interpolated) and dual LED flash (not dual tone), and slightly below the fingerprint sensor.
- In the front we find the earpiece at the top, the camera 5 megapixel f / 2.4 fixed focus but with face detection and light sensors / proximity.
- The soft touch buttons are not backlighted.
- Cover fairly thin but with good interlocking with the body; It is smooth and quite slippery, but does not retain fingerprints (at least the white version). The physical buttons are directly on the external metal frame.
- External glass with rounded edges 2.5D with pre-applied film from the house offering a good flow and has a minimum of oleophobic treatment; no other films in the package.
- Display brightness is good, good viewing angle; HD IPS LCD screen with colors and sharpness well played good for the category.
- Touch-sensitive and comes with multitouch 5 touches, writing rapidly and with Swype function that you type with two fingers (Google keyboard used)
- Two sim slots: Both Micro Sim 4G (with dynamic selection software).
- Presence MicroSD slot with a capacity of 32Gb (I tested Samsung 64Gb and is properly recorded).
- Removable battery (weight about 55g) from 3200mAh declared, to the test with amperemether, we found about 3100mAh; Geekbench test has been very positive with more than 12 hours of screen on time.
- Android 5.1 without any customization and launcher 3 (to be replaced immediately with something better like Nova, Apus, Cm Launcher).
- Open the app and switch between apps very quickly, stock browser with a few bumps as always (we recommend Chrome). Task manager by pressing and holding the center button and option to clear all apps.
- Excellent management 16Gb of internal ROM that are available in a partition to 11.7 GB for apps and data.
- Good management 2Gb ram by Android 5.1 .. more than 1.5 Gb ram free after loading some apps into memory at startup.
Connectivity:
WiFi b / g with no problem stable signal, good power and coverage (not tested it in wifi dual band).
BT 4 tested pairing with headsets and car, also easily transfer with other Bluetooth smartphones
OTG: not tested because of the lack of USB adapter Type-C -> Micro USB
GPS: understated, cold quick fix in about 30 seconds but poor precision and tendency to lose the fix; we hope for a software fix.
Camera:
- Main camera Sony 8Mpixel f / 2 (13Mpixel interpolated) that produces valid shots with daylight; good focus and flash of good power; interface camera classic mediatek poor options; when using the flash or light conditions unfavorable, the quality of the shots falls but not overly, interesting seal at high ISO that allows to bring home click the "acceptable" even 1200 ISO.
- Sufficient video performance, slightly slow the focus and during the displacement along the axis of rotation, is present shuttering; the highest resolution of video is only HD .
- Secondary camera for Selfie 5 megapixel without autofocus but with face recognition, quality of the shots enough for video calls to some emergency selfie with good light.
Shots uncompressed:

Bench:
Antutu 5.7.1 over 20000 points; in line with other cpu quad core 1GHz MT6753P
Geekbench 3 with 1354 points in multi-core test and 481 in the single-core test.
