I am using mainly MX player to watch videos on an Samsung S3 Galaxy Tab.
Videos are located on a smb shared drive on my network, and i select the file to read using a file browser app.
since sevral months, display of the file name looks like an encoded string (>200 random alphanumerical caracters) but i cannot see the real path/file name anymore.
is there a way to fix that?
Best regards

File Manager HD is transcoding file name to their own format which can't be recognized by other apps.
I recommend using other file browsers which does not change file name such as BubbleUPnP, ES Explorer, etc.

did anybody has any problem with AllShare app? it can find my home media server (Twonkymedia in my Qnap) but it can never load the content list.
I can load twonkey filelist but I can't make allshare play most of video files (mostly hd ones)

My guess is that your HD files are in MKV format which the Tab doesn't understand. It would need to transcode them into a format the Tab knows what to do with.
For me, none of my .avi work :-(
MediaTomb --> GT

The Tab does play .mkv files.
All you need to do is use something like Astro or ES File Explorer to select the files and then open up in the player. They then play fine.
With Astro you press and hold on the file and from the selection select Open As, then Video, then choose your video player.
For ES File Explorer you simply click on the file and from the selection select Video and then again the video player you wish to use.
Regardless the stock video player although it does not show .mkv files in it's list it does however play them fine.
Mine does not even show any content, be it video or just jpg, it will just keep trying to load, and after a few mins, it will just stop with an empty list.

It could be the way that the Allshare app on the Tab works. I know that my Epic will show information that my Tab won't. I read that it is how the Tab requests data from the server. I wonder if we could pull the Allshare app from the Epic and put it on the Tab.
I have a collection of videos that are kid friendly and a collection of videos that are not kid friendly and I'm looking for an app that will present the list of kid friendly movies to the android user while blocking any access to the not kid friendly movies (or any other file).
Currently I have the videos in separate folders so I see this is really being a "restricted file explorer" or a "video player locked a specific folder" app - but I'm open to suggestions. Is there an app out there that does this?
Thanks!
You can use MX PLAYER... Go to Settings-->List--> Video Folders... Select the folders which you want to display... Simple... Or, you can create an empty .nomedia folder...

That looks like what I want...but this restricts MX Player as the kids video player and I like using MX Player for the non-kid videos. Is there a way to run MX player to be restrictive with a run-time switch?
Try a .nomedia manager on market (i only know Studio Kuma nomedia manager personally).
You can easily manage .nomedia files on your sd with it.
A .nomedia file in a folder prevents the folder contents to be scanned as media (could depends on your player app options too though).
You have to force a media scan once done.

Can you be more specific about what you want????
I am using ed file Explorer coupled with mx player and my. My files seem to stream very slowly from my computer. Anyone have any ideas how to increase the buffer? They are cached on an ssd and it does not make sense that I am having such a slow down.
There is a similar report over here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52331493
As per the report there is a pocket drop between ES to MX. Try some other file msnagers.
It may fix the issue.

I use File Manager HD for the same purpose and it works perfectly. I have a link to the network folder with my videos on the homescreen and it opens as instantly as any other map.
Seeking through videos is almost as smooth as local files, but that might be because it is actually on an external HDD, it may even be a lot faster on an internal SSD.
yeah it ges a lot of hiccups is there a better video player than MX Player with a longer buffer?
I use Root Explorer to get videos off an SMB network drive and it's also reasonably smooth.
When you use root you can't stream though correct? I have root Explorer as well.
... What do you mean by that? You can add an SMB address to Root Explorer by adding a new tab.
subtitles!

Just switched to Root Explorer!
Streaming is a lot smoother via Root Explorer for me...
However, MX player doesn't automatically pick up the subtitles like it used to do on ES..
Anyway around that? Because i can't browse to the SMB drive via the Subtitle panel of Mx Player..
Checked the same file via ES, worked perfectly...
Extra info: The file name is the same(exactly the same)..for both the video and the .srt file...
Am i doing something wrong?? Please Advice! I really need subtitles..:crying::crying::crying:
I'm not sure if it can pickup on external subs via network stream as I've never tried before; all my videos have embedded subs.
If you're big on network playback, I suggest trying BubbleUPNP DLNA app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118891
Hello,
I have a few questions, I hope some one can answer them.
I would like to know if it is possible to set a video folder that is on a network or a web site. I have all my DVDs copied onto my server and would like to access them from my devices.
When I try to add a folder, via settings, it will not show me a network. If I go to Network stream I have to type in the complete url to the file its self for it to play.
Example: 13.125.44.133:4040/movies/61/video_ts/vts_01_1.vob
I would like to be able to see the directory with the list of folders that the movies are in and then select the folder and have the app play the movie.
Example:
Movies/
61
2012
After Earth
....
Maybe the only way to access to this folders its using a file explorer with the capabilities of accessing to network folders.
I was able to locate the file, like you suggested. I am using ES File Explore, it allowed me to save the path and also associate the vob files with MX Player. So now I have one more question. When I ripped my DVD's, they are just like on the DVD. There is 4 or 5 vob files numbered 1, 2, 3... When I select the first vob file and it plays to the end it goes back to the ES File Explore app and does not continue on to the second vob file. Is there a switch so that it will do this or will it just not do this?
MX Player currently has no built-in SMB share support. External apps like ES File Explorer only pass 1 file URI at a time to MX.
This has been previously requested before. https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/mx-videoplayer/nYpihpAVJq0/discussion
It's already on the feature requests list. http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/mx-player/sticky-running-list-feature-requests-t2718297
i see that there is a "back to list" i uncheck this and it went to the next file, seam to work.
Interesting, I didn't think that they would have changed so quickly to passing all the URIs in the folder. Well, good to see that you found a solution.
Related: http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/mx-player/bug-report-video-button-lan-mounted-t2967882
An amendment to what I said above; MX still doesn't receive all the URIs, but rather does predictive requests based on filename, as a quickfix to this issue.
I use ES file explorer to do this, you can 'save' the location as a shortcut to the desktop of your device (long press on the folder, select save to desktop)
There are currently a few bugs with this in the latest version which i have my own thread about, subtitles dont load and some videos require software playback to prevent audio going out of sync but it works and works well in general.
Anyone using this feature could tell me how it works when there are 2 files - video and subtitles?

If the directory listing is enabled on the host, MX Player can get the list of files. So, it will automatically load the subtitle as we. Else, MX Player will try to get the subtitle by assumption (by just replacing video extension with subtitle extensions). But, it doesn't work everywhere.
So, it's better to enable directory listing if you are using a local server.
HI!
I usually download all my torrents on mobile including my TV shows.Recently,I downloaded arrested development season 1,mkv file and was watching it using mx Pla:yer prowhen all of a sudden my mx player stopped detecting those videos. So now I have to use my file explorer then navigate to downloads and then finally select a file and click it.This ****'s irritating ,so could you guys give me your advice, since you people know more?
@rashadthegre check
Settings > List > Folders
And see if your download folder is in the list of folders to be searched by MX.

Hi,
MX Player can detect most files with default setting.
But there are still some devices not detecting all files unless adding folders manually.
It would be help for improving default setting if you send system log after refreshing video list.
Please make sure that log should be gather immediately after refreshing video list because it will be erased periodically.
Thanks

Some of your video folders contains a file named ".nomedia". It actually represents that there is no media content inside the folder. So, if you keep any videos inside that directory or any subdirectory, it will be ignored.
For example your download folder in internal memory & media folder on external memory has ".nomedia" files. That's why it's not getting listed.
Either you have to delete those files or alternatively you can force MX Player to scan the directories even if ".nomedia" file found (Goto Settings >> List & Disable "Recognise .nomedia". Then, Refresh the video list.
