At work we installed a new WiFi router a few months back. The connection is open and no one needs a password to connect to it. But many who bought android phones recently arent able to connect to it. I have a OnePlus One with android 4.4.4 which doesnt connect to the WiFi. My colleagues own Xiaomi, Motorola phones which they bought recently, which also doesnt connect to the internet.
The phones detect the WiFi signal, says the network is saved but fails to connect to it no matter what. The temporary solution is to make our laptop into a WiFi router and use it but this is seriously annoying. The router is from HP and I dont know the exam model number for it at the moment
I will be grateful if someone can find any solution for this problem. Also, I am a novice when it comes to gadgets so, if your suggestion is to manually set up my WiFi settings please do so with clear instructions or a video of some sort. However I will be happy if this problem gets solved in a straightforward manner.
Please help!

No need to configure wifi on your device IMO.
Sounds like an issue with the wifi router.
To check an fix the internet settings of the wifi router, you will need the adminstrative access/console/password for the router.
Then you can check that all new devices afre allowed to connect. On some routers you can restrict the access to a list of known devices or by enabling a MAC address filtering.
If you find such options on the HP wifi router, disable it and restart the wifi.
And make sure that the SSID of the wifi network is visible (= not hidden). Some Android devices have issue connecting to hidden networks.
Thread closed. Thank you.

I just upgraded my router to a wireless one. Firstly, it's connected via ethernet to a PC and it is happily getting internet access.
On my i5500 I get a strong wifi signal. Wifi Analyser shows the signal at max constantly. I can also connect with Gmote and it works just fine.
The problem is that I can't actually access the net at all from the phone.
So basically I know that my phone is talking to the router with no problem. It's just getting out onto the internet.
Does anyone know of a solution?
try logging into your router and change the broadcast channel to something else and test it again. it should be something like a/b/g mode... define a single channel and see if it works.
I had originally thought that was working. It did for the first few minute where I had connection but then it just dropped.
I have noticed that I have some very small bursts where I can connect.
Do you think that trying the different channels may be the solution?
I have the same problem. Have you found a solution?
Still no solution. I went through every channel and every encryption method.
So far I've found that having the channel set on 'Auto' and then disabling encryption seems to give me internet connection through WIFI for at least the initial period but it eventually drops. But that's also not always.
I've also Googled it to death and found nothing. If you do find the solution please post it here and I'll do the same.
Maybe we can help each other.
make sure you entered the right password of wlan.
use a pc to connect the router and in the wlan you'll find the password.
Ok, just to clarify. My phone connects to the Router via WLAN. In fact I can use Gmote to control my PC. So the WLAN connection is great.
The problem is accessing the internet when using that connection.
I had similar problems with a router last year. I resolved the issues by flashing DD-WRT firmware. The manufacturer's firmware was junk.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I had that idea but they don't have firmware for my router yet. I have asked them if they intend to make one.
Any chance the firewall on your phone is blocking your browser from using the Wifi?

I have no firewall on my phone.
Ok I've tried some new stuff and they I've had the longest connectivity so far (which is about half an hour).
First I made sure my Wifi wasn't set to turn off when the screen goes to sleep. Second, according to a forum I read, Netgear recommends channel 7. If that channels doesn't work try 1,3,6,9,11,13.
I then disabled encryption.
Fortunately no one near me uses Wifi at all and I've got the kind of walls that stop the signal from getting outside.
Anyway. It's working so far but I'll monitor and report.
[edit] And I forgot. The router was checking for firmware but it wasn't actually finding so I downloaded it myself. Seems that also made a difference.
Ok. I can confirm after 2 and a half hours my internet connection is stable. I even left half way through and when I came back it connected perfectly.
So as a summary here's what I did:
1) Get latest firmware
2) Change channel to 7
3) Disable encryption
I will change encryption and see if it still works
Hi,
I've just received my Samsung Focus AT&T Unlocked, everything's look good except WiFi won't work, no matter what I do. I've tried all suggestions posted online..
Did NoDo update
Tried WPA
Tried WPA2
Tried with No Security (Open Network)
Tried the channels 6, 9 and 11
Even reset the Router
Reset the Phone
I'd really appreciate any help, WiFi is a must for me!
Many thanks for your help!
You did NOT provide enough information so we can't help you.
Eg. Does your phone give an error connecting or does it not detect WiFi at all? Does your WiFi works elsewhere such as your office?
Oh sorry.
Phone detects all available networks, but can't join/use them. The error is:
"Connection Unsuccessful - Your phone couldn't reach the WiFi network xyz"
Yes, tried creating a network with my Macbook and joining, but that didn't work either.
Have you tried to connect using Wired connection (when your phone is connected to PC with Zune launched)? I just want to make sure that connecting to internet and getting and IP is not the problem.

Yes, that works. So I turned off 'Data Connection' from settings, connected to PC and opened Zune. I can access internet on the phone, even checked the IP, it seems to be using the PCs connection. Removed the USB cable, and there's no internet.
So yes, that works which confirms that there's physical fault in the phone, just a bug?

I had similar problem with my university wireless connection. After several access with Zune, the problem was fixed. And by the way, it may not be a hardware problem since your device detects the available network.
Perhaps you need to visit a phone shop.

Ah, thats a relief to know. And since windows is not officially available in my country, there are no shops.
I'm expecting one of the experts here to chime in and help, or someone who has experienced and resolced this issue before.
Thanks
Can you please tell me your router's mode, channel, fragmentation, treshold values. Maybe that'll help.
Anyone? WiFi not working is so annoying!
I'd really appreciate any help with this.
Try connecting to WiFi at your office or somewhere else.
I also have the Samsung Focus and it won't connect to a certain router no matter how I configuration the router.

Hello everyone,
I wanted to know is it possible to connect to a specific AP even if there is multiple AP's with same SSID. Android as it is its made to be simple and it will only recognize one WiFi Network...
About the problem: On my college we have a WiFi network with multiple AP's and same SSID but for some reason one of the AP's is not working correctly i would connect to another one but i cant see other AP's as they all have same SSID.
Question: How can i see all AP's even if they have same SSID and connect to specific one ? Can i use terminal or is there an App that can help me (I was unable to fin any app that would help but maybe there is something that can get the job done)
Thank you
Bump ?
As far as I know there's nothing you can do about it. Maybe there's some root-app out there which lets you connect to a specific MAC address, but Android doesnt offer such a feature by itself.
Android just connects to the strongest signal of a network it knows .. and that's it.

I know, that's why I'm asking on XDA so some of the Linux experts or Android Developers can suggest me something. Some app some terminal command or something ... Thanks for your response anyway
Hey Guy I have been having an issue connecting to my works wifi ( open no password) for a while now.
Any ways I was in a couple spots this week and tried to connect to some open wifi networks. Which go teh same same no connection (just says saved under the wifi networks list)
Anyways if some of you could try to connect to open wifi networks and see if you get the same problem. I also tried this on my home router with the password turned off and same result.
Really look forward to any of your findings
I have no problems here, never had any problems connecting to open wifi on the campus wifi.
I'm on the latest nightly. Have no issues connecting to an open BYOD network at work, which then uses web authentication.
Cisco WLC + AP setup, btw.
thanks guys, hopefully some more people will chime in, trying to explore this, cause i breifly had a oppo find 7a and had the same issue, so the phone isnt defective but there might be a mug when connecting to certain open networks
I also for ****s and giggle tried connecting to a xfinitywireless ap and same issue, should have atleast seen a sign in screen from teh browser
Hello, before you hate me, my question relates with programming and I do not find anythink similar here.
So I'm develeping android. It has to send data from phone to PC via network (Wifi LAN connection, IPv4, DHCP working). There is NO internet access and never will be!!! On phones like Xiaomi Samsung Huawei and Lenovo it works like charm, but on some phones (Sony, Prestigio)(different android version on that phones, on sony probably 4.0 or 4.4 and 6.0 on prestigio) it is not working, these phones detect wifi connection differently, they connect normally but then they said there is no internet connection and show small exclamation mark next to wifi symbol although they stay connected to wifi and ping agains them works normally, but android api network operation not works anymore, only when I connect that wifi LAN network to internet, android network api started to work normally. So faced someone to similar problem? Is the a solution to make it work on network without internet access? I do not have access to problem phones so I do not can run debugger on them. I will be glad for any advice or usefull link. Sorry for bad english but it is not my native language.
PS: Please it's not problem with wifi access point or network configuration on router or phones, I am sure. Phones from xiaomi, huawei... work normally, same code, same configuration, same network without internet access.

I don't know how you expect anyone to help solve this issue or troubleshoot what is going on if you do not have access to the devices that have the problem. If you do not have the phones in your possession to test them, we can't help you.
