[Q] Classic "App" Couldn't be installed. Free up some space and try again. - General Questions and Answers

Hey, I have a classic problem. I have approx. 2 GB free of 32, but when I tried to download a rather small app (50 MB), I get the insufficient space problem. I tried removing Poweramp (and now I can't get it back), clearing cache from recovery, and removing .odex files and such. Is there a solution I haven't tried yet?

You have approx. 2 GB free of 32. Is it device memory or SD card?
What is the destination storage for your downloading of that small app? SD card or device memory?

you might need to clear logs and also change install location to SD card. Checkout this guide on How to fix the “Application not installed” error on an Android phone [/URL] . If its MTK based then you could expand the internal storage space.

Yeah, my phone is a Moto X (2013), so I don't have external storage.

[Q] How to install ROM on the SD card ?

Hello. I have a Motorola Milestone XT-720 Android Dexter's 2.2.1 Froyo Kahlpower's V4 GalaxyXT ROM. Is it possible to install the ROM on the SD card ? - I mean for the phone to be able to boot ROM from SD card. I’m asking for this, because when I install some app on the sd card it takes up space, but at the same time this app also takes up space on the internal storage. I know that is normal, but the phone has 250MB internal storage and after installing the ROM the free space is about only 150-160MB. Thanks in advance.
Sorry, it doesn't work that way. The ROM must be located on the phone.
OK....I have 4-5 apps installed and 110MB free space internal storage. So, I have enough space for may be 5-6 more apps and what will happen after that?... Then I will use my phone only to view photos or may be like a mp3-player?

I don't have a single app that is over 5 mb in size. I do believe that you are mistaken on how big apps really are. Most apps are well under 1 mb.
So you have GalaxyXT V4 and the SD has one Partition?
Than have a look at the Market and search for "Move2Sd Enabler" from Roberto Leinardi......Install it...open it.....chose the "Extern" entry and press OK/Save or what ever......after that you can go to your apps under Settings....there you will find an entry "Move to SD" or something like that......you can move every App you installed....but you should not move any System apps....

Let me give you an examples:
1- IGO - around 9MB data storage (in newest version was more);
2- Skype - almоst 5MB
And 2-3 more apps which can not be moved to the SD card....and you know the result..... May be I'm wrong, but after every single app installed on the phone the internal storage dramatically reduced. I really don't know what to do

Yes, I know how to move my apps to the SD card (I have app2sd). But also used storage on SD card there is “ Data storage” and this is used internal storage. I know that is normal the app to save settings, accounts and so on to internal storage, but I think that these ”Data storage” files are too big.

The phone has 256MB that is divided into partitions. Some goes to the kernel, some goes to hold the system, some goes to cache, some goes to other stuff. The "internal memory" (where apps get installed) is partitioned at 170MB. So, in terms of internal memory, you should think of it as 150MB/170MB not 150MB/256MB.

Ok…..you’re right. But I think that you know the main idea of the conversation. These 150MB are enough to install about a dozen apps.

I guess it will depend on the apps & I will look for smaller alternatives, especially if it's something I only use occasionally. (My apps)
I only have one partition on my sdcard & use native froyo apps2sd along with Move2SD Enabler (which enables moving user apps to the sd even if the dev hasn't added that option to his app) to move large / infrequently used apps to the sdcard. I find the limiting factor on my phone to be the RAM (so I will shy away from apps that are constantly running in the background) & the dalvik-cache on the cache partition.

The system partition is meant to run read-only. Normal use won't even try to write to it. I don't think a nearly full /system is a problem at all. If /system is too full, the only problem I've seen is that metamorph might have trouble applying a theme.
Lags are caused by too little free RAM, which is different. When the phone runs out of memory it has to do garbage collection (that's what causes the pause). You can try Autokiller Memory Optimizer from the market. This app lets you tweak the Android built-in memory management parameters to reduce the number of active background tasks (which when tuned properly results in a larger default pool of free memory and thus garbage collection is not needed as often). I like the "optimal" setting myself but you'll probably have to play with it to match your load.

If I missed something please correct me.

There is insufficient space on the device?

I am running Infused rom and when I try to download larger apps from the market, I get the errror that I have insufficient space on the device. I have over 4 gig free on the sd card and 2 gig internally.
Any advice?

Known problem with the new (3.x) market - Google broke it. It used to do downloads to somewhere on /data or /sdcard, now it goes to /cache and it bombs on large stuff because /cache is about 30MB.
I have the same problem with my LG Optimus V. Thing is, it only happens with custom ROM. Never had a problem with the new market on stock ROM.

Internal Storage Almost Full

I've had a recurring problem with running out of internal storage space. I've moved all apps that I possibly can over to my SD card, cleared the cache using CacheMate, and uninstalled most of the bloatware that came with the phone as well as any apps I didn't need that weren't on my SD card already and couldn't be moved. The other times that I've gotten this error, I've been able to uninstall enough stuff to make the notification go away but this time I can't seem to free up enough space.
I noticed that this error/notification occurs when my apps attempt to automatically update. For some reason this eats up my internal storage space even if the apps are installed on the SD card. Also, Market won't let me install any apps, even if they're installed to the SD card. Finally, when I get this error, my Gmail app stops working. It won't retrieve new mail at all.
Any ideas what is eating up so much of my internal storage space and how I can fix it??

Yes, my phone is rooted and running the Octane V3 ROM. I tried installing Fota Fix and I can't install it because there's insufficient space (I have 31mb free on internal memory and about 4gb on the sd card, yet it still gives me this error). lol...this is such an annoying problem.

App2SD won't move

I executed your instructions from "HOW to root & install cwm recovery by androsamace" of the XDA post with success:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2693049
Then I tried to use the app "Link2SD" and got the error "Failure. App2SD is not supprted by your device. Because your device has a primary external storage which is emulated from the internal storage."
Edit 20 sep 2014 14:28 paris time:
Android version 4.1.2. Samsung Galaxy young duos.
Link2SD
32GB micro SD with partitions as: 1st Primary 25GB FAT32, 2nd Primary about 4GB, 3rd primary Linux swap 900MB
Strange thing is.... Link2SD of 18kb update to PRO results with the error "inefficient storage", but installing the APP clash of Clans, with a wopping 40+ MB is no problem??!!!
I can Link apps with Link2SD.
What can I do to solve this? I can not even install the Links2SD pro update from Google play store.
Many thanks
I tried to call on my Samsung phone --> *#9900#
This will show the Sysdump menu. I pressed the option "Delete dumpstate/logcat". In the post below, it worked for that person, but for me it does not matter. Remove the spaces to get the link... working

Anyone more ideas?
Solution I also tried: Install the app "App Cache cleaner 1 tap clean". But It didn't find any cache to clean.
I cleaned everything before, with Link2SD app already.
Funny to mention that this app can be installed too, and that only certain apps display the inefficient storage error....
Ayone more ideas? please!

this post mentions about Odex files. How can I remove them automatically / manually?
I have rooted my phone , but cannot install the app systemcleanup...

Any ideas how to solve this error?

what is the partition type for the second partition on your card link2sd will only work on ext2 ext3 or ext4
It's ext4 and in the app link2SD I chose ext4 also.

I installed X-sam's Rom. And the error "no efficient storage problem" is no more. Before the app Link2SD plus update would give the error.
But after the ROM update the error is gone. =)
The link to X-sam's Rom's forum thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2601838
Going to give Root External 2 Internal SD now my problem is gone.. =)
I installed the APP Root External 2 Internal SD from Android play store.
The steps mentioned in :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-young/general/swap-internal-sd-card-external-sd-card-t2817853
At first I did not see a change like my internal memory being swapped with external,if I look into settings/storage.
My internal storage is still about 1GB free and my external is about 24GB.
I found out that I deleberately have to press the checkbox"At boot **" two times!, the box right of the button "External > internal".
The checkbox is default already checked, but is not active!!!!
Only after doing that, I saw in my Android phone settings/storage, that both internal and external are both about 24GB.
That indicates that my Micro SD is being used as internal storage. After another reboot my internal is 24GB and my external is about 1,2 GB. Everything is a-ok!
I tested it with large APP's like "Plants vs zombies 2" which is about 400MB big. The game could be played without problems!
Just AAAWWESome! :highfive: to you r2dak!
Internal storage is used even if the APP internal 2 external is running. Using Link2SD paid version to move extra Megabytes off my precious 1.5GB internal storage towards my Micro SD.
I installed a lot of APPS, and still got 1,1GB internal memory free !

Insufficient storage available.

Hi,
I have an Android device. I bought it from our local cellphone shop, a Cherry Mobile phone. name of the unit is Jelly. Its Android Version used was 4.2.2. I have 165mb of internal storage(17.88mb available) and 14.87GB(13.28GB available) of SD card. I've rooted it using FramaRoot. I'm getting this error when I download or install an application using Playstore and APK installer.
"Error downloading. Insufficient storage available".
I tried clearing the cache. I've put it's Preffered install location to "SD card". Default Write Disk to "SD card" . But nothing worked! I really need help!
I cant download anything! I tried to download Link2SD(a 3mb file) to fix but nothing! I've tried installing Lucky Patcher apk. but it said "Insufficient ....................." .. How do I fix this?
I also noticed this when I was running out of storage, even though there was enough space for apps.
Try deleting some more data in your internal storage, not the SD card, and it should work again.
Basically, if u download an apps from the Play Store, the apps will be stored first in the internal storage. After that it will automatically moved to SD Card if u have root and set ur device.
Does the app which u want to download larger than the available internal storage?
If that so, u should free some memory in ur device.
Otherwise, u could try to enlarge the internal storage of ur device, try to find it in other part of this forum corresponding to your device.
17MB internal is the problem. It can't download an app directly to the SD, it has to pass through the internal memory first.
Clear some space on the internal memory.
Also, try dialing *#9900# and clicking on 'delete dumpstate/logcat'. Might give you a few more MB's.
