So I want a new phone and I have been good with sticking to HTC. I was interested in getting the One M9 and using the rear cam as a video recorder for 60fps vlogs. The question is will the One M8 be a good enough device for me or should I wait for the One M9? As it stands besides using the camcorder, I only really use my phone for music, web, and social media apps. The one thing that will make me want to get the M9 is Verizons history of not updating older devices to newer software versions. Obviously the M8 would be ideal for the lower price. Any thoughts?
Frankly I think the camera on the m8 sucks. If video matters to you, I would wait for the m9, but that's just my 2 cents
Tough call. The m8 camera can be good in the right conditions. Sometimes you really have to play with the settings to get a good picture. For point and shoot, it's not always great. I hope the m9 camera is very good but it looks like they failed yet again on the HTC desire eye which has and 13mp on front and back but reviews didn't favor it very well. Sucks that HTC went from having the best cameras in the industry to the worst. Crossing my fingers

I would guess that HTC will improve at least screen resolution, camera, battery life, cpu and other under-the-hood aspects of the M9 as compared to the M8. It's only 19 days away. Why wouldn't you wait?

I think what I need to consider now is whether the upgrade is worth it for the price. As it stands now all I really need is a good/decent video recorder, sd card slot, and good battery life. Everything else is now just extra.

Not a refurb, an HTC RE camera! 16mp camera which interfaces directly with the M8. Also shoots video in HD and slow motion or time lapse.

Looked it up. From what I see it only does 30fps, and there isn't really a camera interface. Plus I'm still going to buy an HTC One M8/M9 so it would still be a waste.

Actually the HTC One M8 and many other smartphones (Samsung, Sony, Apple, LG) have the ability to record 60fps. there are many sample videos from smartphones on YouTube with the 60fps framerate.

I stand corrected; I haven't shot a lot of video on my M8. It's odd that you have to select the FHD mode from camera mode because the settings disappear when you're in video mode. I've been shooting video with my RE. Will have to give this a shot.
I wait until the phone proves itself before I buy. The M8 has a nice camera, seriously, I never understand the hate it recieves. You can pick up an M8 for $300 on EBay all day long, which is CHEAP. Although, if it were me, I'd NEVER buy a Verizon branded phone again. I root to get Ad Blocking, and Verizon is a bunch of jerks about their extra junk security. The M9 looks great, but that's either going to be super expensive or a contract. I went Straight Talk for both our phones and am SO HAPPY that contract business is over.
As an aside, most of the YouTube guys I know tried the phone camera route and just got a dedicated video camera after it was all said and done. Take care!
I look forward to getting my M9 in about 18 months... used and off contract carrier unlocked...

My phone's rooted with Pinnacle 1.3 looking like SAMSUNG GALAXY S2... my doubts are? the phone is better ? better than a AMOLED screen? pro and cons? about getting a Inspire? Also the battery is better than the CAPTIVATE? it's so important to me? i read alot but i don't decide :/ help me please! ... thanks
*cough* I certainly wouldn't call the Inspire's camera "good." Instead, I would use terms such as: lackluster, mediocre, disappointing, meh.

Agreed, it is "acceptable" at best. Wait for the Amaze 4G, which will give you up to 42Mbps down on T-Mo anyway.

That's exactly why my sister has kept her older HTC phone with a 5MP camera, because the Inspire's camera is absolute crap in comparison.
I've gone back to film-based cameras because of the crap 8MP camera isn't worth the hassle of trying to "fix" the pictures it takes.

There was no consistency in the photo quality. Some came out crystal clear and sharp, while others looked like frame-grabs from television.
Oddly enough, while the photo quality was lousy, the VIDEO quality was excellent.

I can't think of a single redeeming quality of the Captivate VS the Inspire.
Camera works great for me, GPS works, battery life could be better but still acceptable
PLUS I didn't have to put up with Samsung's idiocy of using RFS file system.
I have been EXTREMELY happy with the Inspire. It's the only phone I've held on to for more than 6 months. I bought it on release day.

With the exception of the camera (and the 1-size battery design), I'm also very happy with the Inspire.

It doesn't take a genius to see that this phone offers way beyond what other manufacturers are capable of. Any company can put together a body and screen and call it a phone, but Samsung not only puts the best hardware, they have the best software. What a beautiful phone. Just like the S3, and S2 before that, the S4 is easily going to win the award. It bascially made all other phones obsolete. (sans spen). Good job Sammy.
Matter of opinion but I agree with you

good question
OP, you're delusional if you can't admit that the HTC One is an incredible piece of hardware and software in its own right.
it'll be a close call for the phone of the year - if its to be one of these 2, i am sure that opinion will be just as divided as it is now.

I have to agree although i sense you being a little bias towards the HTC One. But yeah, in my opinion there are 2 2013 Flagship phones that matter, S IV and HTC One. The rest IS obsolete so far and that is including the XZ and the optimus G pro ( not that its a bad phone but it wont compete).

HTC One is my choice - no doubt - I waited until GS4 was announced before i decided though so i was still hoping samsung could pull something out of the bag.
you're right, theres nothing else out now that comes close to either of them but it will be interesting to see next Nexus phone though.
In my view HTC Sense is quite smoother, excellent and amazing over touchwiz.
It is my opinion only. But beware of HTC One. It's gonna be a tug of war.
And what about the Note2(or coming Note3)? Doesn't it deserve a nomination?

looking at software only, sense 5 is MUCH closer to stock android than any other version previously.
they've also removed much of the bloat that was in other versions.
(for the record, i didnt care much for previous versions of sense either, usually preferred stock android)
this is off topic though.
on topic, yea i was going to mention the note 3 - i dunno though, im not entirely happy with it being called a phone, for me its TOO big as i believe its 5.5"?
5" is really pushing it IMO.
I'm a Galaxy S fan and I think that unfortunately the S4 is being released too early.
now every manufacturer who comes out with a flagship phone will try to top it and probably succeed :/
I wonder if Apple will be able to with the new iPhone

Samsung S4's Super OLED screen has a stunning 441ppi, which is more than the iPhone 5 but less than the HTC One (468).
S4 - Plastic build.
ONE- Premium built.
The ultra pixel camera of ONE beats up 13MP camera.
In terms of speed S4 is the winner but this doesn't mean that ONE is not a good phone.

Some people love super amoled, while some don't care for it. The way I see it, samsung and htc make the best screens on the market today. I prefer my Note 2's super amoled over the HTC One X's Super LCD 2, so I am thinking I am going to prefer the S4 screen over the One.
However the camera on the One has been getting some mixed reviews. It's being seen that it does take great pictures in low light settings due to the better absorption from the lesser pixels, but pictures are as sharp as those seen on other 8 MP camera, especially when zooming in on the pictures. For most people it doesn't matter, but to say that the One's camera "beats up" the camera on the S4 is a bit over sighted especially since we haven't seen any comparable shots taken between the two cameras.

there is one comparison that ive seen which was done at the samsung event, its over on the one forum if you're interested.

it's really not complicated.
the HTC One has a good camera - i dont think you will find a review that doesnt say that.
on the other hand, the same people all agree that it's lacking in detail - no big surprise. that's the price you pay for low light performance.
those who know enough about camera variables to tinker with the settings will be able to get very similar results on both phones regarding colour etc.
if you don't care about low light performance, then almost certainly gs4 camera wins for you (if you are only considering those 2 phones), if you do care about low light and also image stabilisation, then HTC wins.
easy.
If u read what I said instead of jumping on me because of your fanboyism, you wil read that I said they take good low light photos.. and pics good for facebook.. but I have a life outside facebook.. only max 5 percent of the photos I take get on it.. some people dont use fb.... so I dont need a 4mp..sorry.. and if u check verge, pocketnow and even watch their shows on youtube, you will easily hear them saying that htc is a fail in camera..
.....
I've had my HTC One M9 for 2 days now, and I'm starting to see things that are disappointing to me. Especially for such a high end, pricey device. Battery life is not very good at all compared to my old LG G2. And it takes forever to charge. The camera is, for lack of a better word, horrible.
I'm trying to decide if I should return it to T-Mobile in exchange for a Galaxy S6. All the reviews I've read and watched lean toward the S6.
Tell me why or why not?
...You came to the S6 forum to ask fans of the device to talk you into NOT getting it?
Seriously? -_-
Nah, this is definitely an April Fool's post.
I was torn between the m9 and s6..after watching the keynote and seeing hands on videos, I quickly decided on the s6. I'm glad I did. Pictures look better than my g2 (the phone I came from). The screen crispness, colors and brightness is superb! Didn't mind not having micro SD or removable battery since I didn't have it before.
The only thing I find weird to adjust is that whites seem to have a yellow tint, where as on my g2 they were more blue or white (in my opinion).
The front facing camera is really nice quality too.
S6,higher res screen in a slightly bigger screen size. The size of s6 is smaller and lighter than the m9.

Well... the only cons are the same cons that every review mentions. Lack of SD card slot and price. Also the speaker quality is obviously lesser on the S6 if that matters to you.
The only other consideration is how much you care about rooting/unlocking/custom ROM support, which will certainly be stronger on the M9 just because it's a Snapdragon device. At least that's how it'll be initially.
Other than those, the M9 loses in every other measurable area.
So really the M9 Vs. S6 issue comes down to how much the price difference matters, how much you care about "3rd party" support, and whether or not you need a SD card slot.
Edit: Suppose the M9 warranty program is worth considering as well.

We'll, my G2 was running aicp 5.0.2 with custom rom which I could easily go 24hrs and be fine.
So far my s6 has slightly less battery life. But i can quickly go from 15% to 100% in an hour. Balances out. I'm using the s6 a lot to get things setup and such, so not quite a fair comparison. Letting the battery settle in for a week.
I do see a speed difference between my g2 and the s6 though
I'm even kinda been on the fence to keep my G2 and hold out what's to come in the fall, but that is very unlikely for me to do.

I haven't gotten the S6 yet since I'll have to wait until April 10th, and I'm also coming from a G2.
The S6 will definitely be faster- even though I really do enjoy my G2.
All the Bestbuy locations have the S6/Edge on display. I suggest you check them out in person.
If you are coming here to ask you have already made your decision. To be honest if you are interested in a G4 id wait until its announced and compare that to the S6 then get a device.
I'll tell you why you SHOULD return your One M9. The S6 is by far the biggest leap I've ever seen in a phone, and I've had every major LG/HTC/Samsung phone from the past 3 years lol.
It truly is a home run.
Keep m9 for a bit longer to see if anything changes in terms of camera and battery performance. I think a person should keep a phone for a least two weeks to get a good impression. Also go on HTC thread to see camera tricks. I'm getting m9 tomorrow and I will see if it will meet my great expectations as I'm coming from a phone that's three years old.
I would only buy s6 if camera was the main thing but for me it isn't and the negatives of the s6 outweigh my liking for the device. The soc difference isn't big in reality and I think they both have inconsistent battery reviews from people, so they are similarly disappointing. Design and ui are a personal opinion but I think m9 is better.
Go with whatever you like tbh and I hope whichever phone you choose you have a great experience

Only Gripe? Having a camera THAT bad is a HUGE fail on HTC's part, when the biggest weakness they've had since the M7 fiasco was their camera
All they had to do to save their company was fix their camera and put a 2K screen in their new flagship.
Instead, they did neither. I predict either a buyout from Samsung to grab patents or HTC simply going out of business in a year.

Screen is a moot point no real difference with 1080p its just a numbers game tbh. iPhone 6 has a lower resolution screen and funnily enough it also looks fine.
Thank god they didn't put a 2k display and the camera isn't an epic fail. They haven't pushed the sensor to what it is capable of. Also manual control says a different story. I doubt they are going bust this year and I think they would rather die then sell themselves to Samsung. I do hope they do get bought by another respectable company so they can be in a better position. They just need more money in R&D and marketing.

Sir - you have 15 days from the date of receipt of my phone (business days) to make that much-touted camera work like it should. Otherwise, I, like the rest of my early-adopter brethren, will be RMA'ing these phones in record numbers. You have been warned.
UPDATE: I have asked for and received an RMA box (headed my way). The only reason wasn't the camera, but it was the major one. The B&W camera alone is pretty awesome. If I felt I could trust Essential to make fixing the camera a top priority, I'd probably keep it and wait, but after careful consideration, I can always get 100% of my dough back now, and if I see they have made the camera function to the flagship level, I will re-buy at a later time. I want to love it just like everyone else... but $749 out of pocket sitting in a box waiting... not my style.

Sir - you have 15 days from the date of receipt of my phone (business days) to make that much-touted camera work like it should. Otherwise, I, like the rest of my early-adopter brethren, will be RMA'ing these phones in record numbers. You have been warned.

Wow.. Dont put words in my mouth. He doesnt speak for me Andy.
Just return it day 1 and go get something else.
Side note; am wondering if they might be pretty dialed in on user feedback for updates. Not counting on it, but since they're small and it runs stock, it might be pretty quick to get fixes.
Full disclosure : I have not orfered a device yet, and am looking closely at this one and the Nokia 8.
I hope they release an awesome update for the camera. On day 16.

Thats what clove is for ?. Im not interested in waiting for the 9, or whatever the US version might be. The nicest feature of the essential is the screen to form factor ratio.
I can't believe people make their phone purchase decisions solely on camera performance and shipping time. It's a daily use device that you'll own for at least a year. You should look at the bigger picture. Case in point is the phone camera. Its not like people are post-processing RAW images at home. They just want a colorful, saturated image that "pops".

He can always buy the phone again if that's the case [emoji16]
It's not like some update comes after he returns the phone which makes it the best camera and he can't buy the phone again.

Exactly. Some are cancelling because they didn't get the FedEx tracking today. LOL!
I have the Sony XA that uses the same sensor as the PH-1 so the photo quality to me is good enough for quick shots. Having the monochrome to improve the photo is a bonus. For anything else, I use my pocketable Sony RX-100 M4 anyway or DSLR for more serious photography.

My problem is not the shipping delay, but the pure lack of any communication.
Now, the camera is not and has never been a deal breaker for me.
I have a Samsung NX300 as my throw around. I keep it in the backpack or in the car.
For serious stuff I have a Canon 7D and a 7D MkII.
The camera on a phone is a last resort and mostly for product pics for things I don't want to forget.

I passed on the phone specifically for this reason. I have a great camera on my Pixel. But we recently had a baby and there's no way I'm getting a kinda crappy camera on my phone while she's growing up. Sure, a good DSLR will outperform even my Pixel but as the old photographer's saying goes, "The best camera is the one you have on you." And that means my phone the far majority of the time.
Before our little one, I didn't care at all about camera quality. But now it's incredibly important, if not one of the most important things.
I'm not trying to change your mind or convince you of anything. Just giving you some perspective on why some, or at least I, will be passing on this phone. I can either get another great phone with a great camera (or keep my Pixel) so I can photograph more precious moments with my daughter, or I can get a phone with a mediocre camera and miss some of those precious moments. That's worth passing on this phone to me. None of the other issues with this phone are a problem for me, but the camera is a deal breaker.
Looks to me like Andy Android has been paying attention. According to Android Central, Essential has dropped THREE updates focused on camera refinements and the pictures they posted today look a damn shot better than they did at first. Clearly. there is a ton of work they can do to improve the post processing through software, so I'm going to give it a long, strong chance to make the cut before I have to return it. I'm a black and white buff since I was in HS, and I really wanted the P10 just because of the dedicated sensor... but I also wanted premium materials... so if this phone can aesthetically hit the right notes and take damn good pics while doing it, I may be selling my full on Sammy Gear Collection and going with this one as daily driver. I'm hopeful now at least. Been waiting for a clean beast like this for ages. Am I climbing back on the bandwagon?
You don't speak for everyone, I will infact be keeping this phone. The camera is the very last thing I consider when purchasing a phone.
It's called a personal note for a reason - I wouldn't choose to speak for you if you paid me. Maybe you can get one of those cameraless flip phones sounds like that's more your speed.

Yup!
I have a OnePlus 3T 6/64, using it for like 11 moths or so.
Want to upgrade to a OnesPlus 6 Lava Red 8+128 that I've seen used for like 300€.
Wanna ask, things like camera(I know it's great, not best but decent), performance(amazing), screen(compared to my 3T maybe not a lot of difference?), battery(also, I get with my 3T 50% brigthness 3.10h SOT, I've used a MI5 and 2.45h so moderate-hi usage), speaker(3t is meh, 6 maybe a lil better?)... Just wanna see what people says, or compared to a 5/5T but wanna know if I'm going to notice a difference, wanna use the 6 for at least a complete year.
Battery is a priority, I need at least 4.30h SoT with a daytime visible brightness. Can't get a 6T or 7, just have 300€ and I want AMOLED and a 835 at least, I've seen Xiaomi alternatives(Mi8) but I'd rather OP, any suggestion?I will be happy with a OP6? Thanks!
I'm a oneplus user since OP3, & i actually use OP6 (8/128) and I will definitely recommend you to get it.
Compared to the OP5T, I feel more comfortable using this larger screen, I get more SOT @50% brightness (~6,5H music, social networking, mailing & some PUBG), a little bit better camera quality (even if the OP5T is already good at video recording & image stabilisation), and the performances are just great.
If u get one at the 300€ price including the genuine dash charger, then it's a great deal
Definitely get it. You will not be disappointed. Some people get 8 hours s.o.t. but that's usually not very realistic-at least not without major kernel modifications. Most of the reason is, though the screen is excellent, it's large and that's where most of your power is lost. I don't think you'll get 10 hours. But in almost every other respect, you'll be floored with it!

Remember to use a GCam port to really get good pictures !
yeah this will be my first OnePlus device.. I wanted to get one before but was on Verizon before and knew it wasn't compatible.. but now that we are with TMobile i'm gonna give it a shot! I know the camera reviews seem to show its very decent (especially at the price point) and I'm pleased with the sample pictures i've seen on youtube... I have seen some of the reviews about using GCAM instead of the stock camera.. i'm just concerned about having 2 camera apps on the phone and if apps could be confused with it..
I do know the Speaker is pretty weak.. so i'm curious to hear how "bad" it really is.. hopefully its still acceptable to use..
I can't wait to see how well it runs FORTNITE... My pixels has some good moments.. but others its a DOG... so with GAMING MODE and larger screen and 8gig ram.. i'm hoping its a beast!

Fortnite 30fps max stable, maybe even 60?
Spealer meh but i don't think it's worse than 3t, will test it this week (there are some oneplus 6 at fnac) and camera use gcam and you'll have almost exact pixel 3 experience. Just intall it and use it, forget the other one unless you need manual mode or better video stabilization
If youre not picky with photo, go for it. Like said already above, dont forget install Gcam...
Regarding the speaker. If you want to root anyways you can also install the dual speaker mod and viper4android for speaker optimization. Got it installed several months and it improves the sound a lot. Often only by playing sound through the earspeaker while I accidentally cover the main speaker.
For me camera quality is poor, I'm coming from a Nokia 8 which has a way better camera quality... Well it seems like you can't have it all at this price point.

I left it on the settings it did when I first installed the game on the OP6.. which was 30fps / epic graphics / 75% 3d graphics.. and it looks so amazing and runs so smoothe and fast compared to my Pixel.. (20fps / low graphics / 50% 3d graphics)

yeah I listened to the speaker a few times and i'm not that displeased with it.. It is VERY easy to cover an severely mute.. but since I use a case.. I just dremel out the inside of the connector between the hole for the speaker and the hole for the USB.. so the sound can pass through there if I block the hole for the speaker.. makes it work much better.

yeah i played around with it some last night.. trying to use portrait mode.. and it was OK but definitely didn't WOW me like some of the pictures i'd get with my OG PIXEL..
So if you install the GCAM, will it replace the stock camera or just have 2 cameras in the app list? can you set the GCAM as primary so even when using the double tap power or lockscreen swipe to camera, it would open GCAM?
Thank you!

2 separate apps, your camera and gcam, it's better at hdr+ enhanced and night sight, you will notice a lot of difference compared to stock. Also don't forget to tweak the camera settings

Dude OnePlus 7 is almost here, just go brand new. You don't know how the previous owner treated their device.
Burn-in on oled?
Needs new battery?
Possible water damage?
Non-OEM quality replacement parts or repairs?
Don't do it man, just go new

The OP6 is probably the last decent phone OnePlus will ever make. They have gone the direction of all big phone makers now, bloatware, removal of headphone jacks, caving into whatever the carriers want them to do. I would get one while you can. I picked mine up used from Swappa and am glad I did.

i'm in the same boat.. yeah the OnePlus 6T does have a little better camera and smaller notch.. but no headphone jack was an issue for me.. and now with the 7 going with a pop up camera.. i'd be nervous about motor failure...
so I grabbed a OnePlus 6 and so glad I did
One Plus 6 all the way. I got one of the last ones available online from their web site...black with 8 gigs ram and 256 gigs storage. I saw a tear down on YouTube and it appears to be one of the easiest phones to replace the battery if needed. So I plan on keeping mine for a long, long time!
