Bootloop to recovery after CWM restore - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am using CWM 6.0.4.7. I took a backup of ROM last night and installed latest version of it. But it was quite laggy. When I tried to restore the CWM backup, it got stuck in bootloop and keeps booting into the recovery. Can someone help? Thanks.

Did CWM state that the restore was successful?

Yeah, it did.
Edit : Anyhow it said, it couldn't find .android_secure. But it succeeded saying 'Skipping the restore of .android_secure'.

Try wiping cache. If that doesn't work, you will have to wipe data and Dalvik too.

[Q] Phone doesn't boot

Yesterday i preformed a hot reboot because my phone was not installing apps correctly. I used the app Hot Reboot. When i looked at my phone again this morning it was still booting! I took the battery out and back again and pressed the power button. But how i try it keeps booting all the time! I can get into all boot modes but i don't want to flash a whole new rom 'cause i haven't backup all my stuff... What can I do? Will this be solved with flashing for example a new kernel or anything wich doen't reset my phone? I'd really appreciatie help!
Try clearing the cache and the dalvik cache in recovery, if that doesn't work tho you will most likley have to do a full wipe and re-install your rom.

Tnx but my phone still keeps on booting after wiping cache. Is there maybe a way to backup all my system 'n data files using adb or something?
It also happened to me this morning...u may again flash your device with the stock roms (froyo or gingerbread) again by using Odin Multi downloader...first power off the phone..then hold volume down+home+power on
To bring into download mode
Then flash the roms...it should restart....at least worked for me

Go into recovery mode and then go to backup and restore and then select backup. It usually takes a little while backing up the system so be patient.

I don't have clockworkmod recovery. Can I just flash the latest version of g3mod (wich involves cwmrecovery)? Doesn't it reset my phone if I flash that?
But are there no possibilities using adb? Because i run one of the first g3mod kernels...

Just flash the latest G3MOD kernel and use the CWM from that. It won't wipe any data whatsoever but if you get force closes it is recommended that you wipe the data from CWM. I don't really know how to use ADB but i think rudolf895 has a tutorial on youtube. Google 'rudolf895' and find his video that is called how to make your own custom ROM.

I would recommend that you flash a new rom and then wipe everything including sd card and sd ext if you get any more troubles

[Q] Flashing first ROM... is this normal?

I just tried flashing Liquid 2.7 on my S3 using TWRP. Cleared cache and Dalvik, then rebooted. Saw some text then the Samsung logo. Then two 'droids dancing. Then nothing. Nada. Black screen. Not responsive to the power button. Eek!
VZW S3, bootlocker unlocked, stock rooted 4.1.2 to begin with.

Post the file name of the zip you flashed. When flashing roms, you should either wipe
1) Factory reset, cache, and dalvik then flash your rom
2) System and Factory Reset then flash your rom
Can you access download mode or recovery?
Liquid-JB-v2.7-OFFICIAL-d2vzw-schi535.zip
Yes, I can get into recovery. I have backups if I need to restore (assuming I can navigate the process correctly).

So I decided to restore my TWRP backup from last night. Entered "Restore" in TWRP, selected the backup, and swiped to restore... FAILED! "Failed to wipe /system"
[Reboot]
"You do not appear to be rooted. Root now?"
[Yes]
Continued reboot, now stuck on the "Samsung Galaxy SIII" splash screen. Letting it cogitate for a bit, but seems like it should have moved by now.

Hmmm... tried another restore, did a TWRP system wipe first. The restoration says it completed... and... wait for it... booting normally! So far so good, at least I appear to be back to where I was before my pre-ROM-flash debacle.
The one response I received (thank you, SlimSnoopOS) was as follows:
1) Factory reset, cache, and dalvik then flash your rom
2) System and Factory Reset then flash your rom
Any other suggestions? Also, I'm not wed to the idea of the Liquid ROM over the others... anyone recommend I start with a different ROM, now that I'm back to square one?

No problem. As for your issue, its fairly simple actually. What you need to do is a clean flash which is either of the two steps I listed earlier. You're trying to go from TW to AOSP but what you did was only wipe the cache then flashed the rom. Wiping cache and dalvik cache is regarded as a dirty flash, something you only do when flashing a newer version of the rom you're on. You never fully removed the TW rom before flashing Liquid which is why it did not boot. Basically, when you want to flash a new rom, by a different developer, you need to do 1 or 2 in order to have a successful flash.
For AOSP roms, you should also be flashing the recommended GApps (Google Apps) as well so that you have your Play Store and a few other Google Apps. The latest "generic" gapps zip is listed here at the top, its "20120301" which is March 1st. Liquid may have their own, that's for you to find out via their thread. Google apps are included in TW roms so this is not necessary.

Sometimes if you get stuck on the boot logo and it never fully boots, simply clearing the cache and dalvik cache in CWM or TWRP can fix it. (Might throw in fixing permissions as well.)

If I completely wipe phone can I restore TWRP Back up

If I use the tool to reset OP6 to factory and root it again. Then update to latest could i restore old twrp backup from same phone?
Yes you can if you stored that twrp backup in your PC.
I think that you can't. I tried few times and never got it right. There are always some errors. Maybe something changed in the meantime tho...

Just backup data in TWRP. Install everything else normally. Full ROM zip, TWRP zip, reboot recovery, flash magisk, boot. Data will be in tact regardless, unless you wipe it or factory reset.
