Loss of existing SIM card signal seconds after boot-up. - General Topics

Hi,
Never thought my first post may be informative but I want to share the events as it may help others.
I'm new to smart phones (first one Elephone P3000s) last phone I had was a Nokia 3310s and I had that for a long time!
I know, so this piece of electronic communication wonder in my hand is quite the thing and has me wide eyed and legless at times.
Yesterday I was updating contacts and generally doing some housekeeping on my new smart phone. I also wanted to create more room on my sd card so moved MapFactor: GPS Navigation data from SD card to main phone storage, using the apps built in option to do this.
I then deleted the folder on the sd card.
Later after lots of playing about, what "She who makes lumpy custard" describes 'housekeeping' as. I noticed that I had the red symbol where my cell phone signal is normally expressed.
My first though was oh no what's wrong with this phone. What followed was search after search but everything I found related to particular phone makers and models but I didn't find anything that was more generic to my issue. Bed called and the search continued this morning but to no avail.
I then decided to reverse everything I'd done as I do remember seeing something somewhere that mentioned navigation as a possible cause. I uninstalled MapFactor: GPS Navigation, still my cell signal would appear as good then fail after 10 seconds or so.
OK reinstall MapFactor: GPS Navigation, still the same as above, so I decided to move MapFactor: GPS Navigation data back over to the sd card.
Did that and low and behold I have my cell signal back and it's been stable all day so far.
I have no idea why this issue exists or if I'll ever be able to move the data back to phone storage, that's an experiment for later.
If anyone can throw some light on this I'd be interested to know. If I can provide anything to assist just ask.
I hope this may help someone else recover from a loss of SIM card and remind everyone that we the "Human Elephant" are more likely to be the cause of these fine pieces of engineering failing than the fine pieces of engineering themselves.
If this post is deemed, by a higher authority, to be better placed elsewhere feel free.
If anyone is helped by this, bless you and don't forget to thank me, it'll probably be the one and only assistance I'm able to offer as there are many younger and brighter lights burning in these forums than this old candle.

Phone Security/Encryption/Protection against loss or theft?

Hi guys, im fairly new to the WM scene, but have finally customized my Xperia X1 to be just how I want it.
This brings me to this question about security.
At the moment what worries me, is if I lose my phone or someone steals it. They would have access to all my information, my contacts, my software, my emails, passwords and other such personal information that I would rather not give out. Obviously the safest solution would be to leave it in the house, but that's something none of us want to do!
Now I was thinking about encrypting the Internal memory and the memory card so that the files could not be hacked or looked at by prying eyes when connected to a computer for instance. But I couldn't seem to find any software which would do such a thing. I currently use TrueCrypt on my PC which stops nearly everything.
What I really want to do is the following:
1. Password the device.
2. Encrypt it, so that the files cannot be taken off or read.
3. Automatic password lock after 1 minute.
4. Stop files being accessed through a PC (by others of course but not myself).
5. Any other methods people could access the phone with a computer, flashing and such tools to get into them.
I know the memory card has encryption to stop anything other than the device reading the card. But this doesn't work on mine for some reason as I can plonk the card in a reader and get access to all my files in various computers I have tried.
I realize it will never be truly secure but let's be honest. The average thief wouldn't exactly know how to hack into a phone and access it's files.
Now im not fussed if say for instance it was stolen, the thief flashed the phone and used it for themselves. At the end of the day, they've got the phone, wether they are using it or not isn't going to make a difference, but making sure they can't access the files is a top priority.
One of the main programs I worry about is these "Wallet" programs that you can get. They are very handy for storing all your card details and such on, but are they truly safe? That is what I wonder.
Any replies would be really appreciated as I always worry about losing my phone at the moment due to it having no protection!
Are there any suggestions anyone can make to me?
Anyone got an opinons on this? I was hoping for a reply.
Hi vmrmic,
I know that Check Point has a encryption solution for Windows mobile since I work there
http://www.checkpoint.com/products/datasecurity/mobile/index.html
Check supported devices:
www.checkpoint.com/supportedhandhelds
X1 is not up there but it works fine. I have tried it. Officially supported in a couple of weeks
Note that this solution is intended for business and not a one by one installation
If you have more questions find the forum on checkpoint.com since I don't always check this forums.
Regards
Check out Throttle Lock http://www.throttlelauncher.com/portal/
Not every thing your asking for but a great solution

Is there going to be any xda support on this? It's still trickling into Kmart stores right now. but if we are able to OC this, that would be great
Doubt it...
its a great little device for little cash. i bought one today after i heard. glad i did. was this or the bb chumby. this blows it away
Hey Pen --
Have you tried the Kindle app on it? I want an ereader that is bigger than my MT3G and I think one of these would foot the bill if I can find one. My local store only had one and it was on hold for somebody.
I am going to get a rain check today.
until they release the patch which allows the market to work i havent tried it. they should have the patch released by tomorrow
How is the screen?
How do you like the screen and how is its performance in general.
over all i like the device. im used to a resistive screen so thats not a problem. doesnt appear to have the auto rotate screen but waiting to hear back from them to find out what the deal is. the manual talks about auto rotating the screen so it should have it. lack of bluetooth is another draw back but i really dont need it. they also have a 2.5mm headphone jack on them instead of a 3.5 like normal but they are addressing that with an adapter i do believe.
power consumption wasnt too bad. i was using the device for 5 hours yesterday and only used a 1/4 reserve from what it said. so i was only down to around 72% charge after playing with it for 5 hours. was reasonably bright enough in a brightly lit room. the angle one can see is pretty good as well.
the microsd card slot isnt in line properly. so if you insert a card you will want to put a price of tape on the end of it so when you release it you can pull it out. i played hell getting the thing to pull out and it was dragging the top of the card so had to use a pair of tweezers to pull it out.
cant access the market yet so havent tried the nook or kindle apps but that will be my next thing. looking at pictures was good. just as good as my digi pic frame.
over all for what i bought it for i do believe it will work a treat. i was going to buy a chumby either the bb or the sony branded chumby and this will work so much better then either of those two devices.
Augen Tablet
Thanks for the info pen.
It surprises me that that it has a 2.5mm jack. I wonder how it ended up with that. You can get an adapter on Amazon or ebay for a buck or two. That would be important for me because I'd like to be able to watch movies on it when I am on the train to work. That is also why I am interested in the Kindle app.
Everything that I have read seems to indicate that it has an accelerometer to rotate the screen.
I get the feeling that Augen underestimated the interest this device was going to generate and put it on the market when it wasn't completely ready, thinking they could dabble a little and fix problems on the fly with the couple of people that bought them. oops.
My Augen Gentouch78 experience
I just picked up my Augen yesterday at the KMart here in Phoenix (KMart actually called me on my raincheck I had made over the phone! Kudos to them). I like the form factor but am quite disappointed overall. While I don't think it is sluggish in general, the resistive touch screen makes it seem that way. Using your fingernail or an old pda stylus helps considerably in that regard.
Couple of negatives:
1. Market download does not work, as others have pointed out (it just stays in the "Starting Download" phase.
2. Micro SD card is hard to insert/remove (you need to use your fingernail in both cases, and to remove you need to also flick it down a bit to slide out as it seems to catch on the lip of the slot).
3. The device could not "Mount" when connected to my PC via USB. I had better luck when the SD card was not in the device, as I was able to Mount it once then, and saw that I had 1.3GB of free space... even though the device SD card info showed only 246ishMB free... what's up with that? (documentation did say there was 2GB available, so the Mounted drive size was closer).
4. I lost sound twice.. had to power off to get it back (all sounds started coming out as loud white noise). Seems to occur when pressing the top front part of the frame... yup, near where the menu/home/back buttons are.
5. Percentage battery use shows that monitoring cellular network was using 57% of the battery, and suggested turning it off. However, you can't... network settings only have WiFi (I curiously did find a place where it prompted me to turn on Bluetooth, but I don't think it did anything).
6. I wanted to return the unit due to the sound problem, but wanted to clear out my google account info... the factory reset does nothing other than power off the unit, even though that is how they say to clear out all data including the google account data.
7. No auto-rotate. No rotate at all that I can see. Nothing in the setup relating to that, even though the manual says it should be there.
8. Non-US Standard earphone jack
9. No mic or web cam
10. Resistive touch screen makes typing on the on-screen keyboard a PITA. I did get somewhat use to it after a while, but still don't like having to press firmly.
On the positive side:
After manually copying a ripped DVD movie in mp4 format onto my SD card and inserting it into the unit, it played great.
So, first impressions are basically way down there for me.
Some other specs:
- Telechips TCC8900 ARM CPU (on an eval board no-less!)
- Android 2.1 - Update 1
- Build 2010-07-21 (boy did they push these out the door... likely with no testing!!)

they are pushing an update out should be out tonight or tomorrow to fix a couple of the things. i believe the eval board is not correct as someone has found the chinese version of this and it has been out for a while. i just think the cooking of this device wasnt the best. i am just hoping they push 2.2 out on it pretty quickly.
I also got one today
I can confirm the market is not working for me either.. Yes build date is really new. haha.. I'm trying to get apps installed by emailing myself APK's to Gmail but I need something like APKatcher to do it. So so far I've not installed anything, but going into settings, aplications and manage I was able to kill the running apps and speed it up.
So far it's a cool little device. I also lost sound once and a reboot fixed it. haha (interesting) I watched 20 minutes of avatar and it looks incredible and gets much louder than a cell phone.. My 16GB MicroSD card went in fine.
There's a Stylus if you guys didn't figure that out yet. Makes typing extremely easy.
Anyone know how I can install some APK's?
ES File Manager comes Pre Loaded.. you can add any app APK to the SD card. and use ES File Manager to install
Installing Quadrant, and some games right now.. I'll post back
Rainchecks
I got two rain checks tonight. I want to get one for myself and I know my wife will want one if it is cool.
If anybody really wants one and lives in Eastern PA, they have 4 of them in the Reading PA store. That is a little far for me to drive and I like getting a rain check because I can make sure they are going to put out an update to make the market work.
It seems like the early reviews are mixed at best but c'mon...they are $150. I mean, if I can get my 6 year old to watch a thomas the tank engine video on it for a few minutes of peace each day, I have gotten my money's worth.
Dev thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7409528#post7409528
Well I got one yesterday and it is horrible.
I am hoping their support can help me get the screen a bit more responsive.
I mean I have to press on it like I'm trying to push through it.
The manual says there supposed to be a calibrations but there isn't.
The manual says there is an option to allow this to orientate according tot he direction held but theres not.
The manual says that when you charge the device the light should be red in color turning green when fully charged well I charged over night and its still red.
When I turn it on it says 100% battery...
Also I went into market which is like that on my Droid1, Incredible, Droidx... and chose to install a app like dropbox, weatherbug, MyMemo, SlingPlayer and it sis there saying downloading but its not.
I have my wifi connected to the device...
Anyone else with ideas???
I so wanted this to be a iPad alternative!!!
Thanks
I got one last night... I side loaded a bunch of apps from my Incredible... LauncherPro, Pandora, Quick Settings, Android System Info... Awesome Drop...they all work... The weird thing is some of the apps force the screen to Portrait, but i haven't found an app yet to turn it back.. (aside from rebooting)
I noticed the sound is wonky... sometimes it works...
I also noticed something installed called Dev Tools... It has a terminal, a bunch of dev settings, a package browser, sync tester, and some google tools..
I got one today as well. So far, all is not well.
Wifi seems to be an issue. I can connect to my network if I turn off security, but when I enable WEP, this thing just sits here and says 'Obtaining IP Address' and then shows 'Unsuccessful'. I have tons of other devices connected. The problem is not the network.
So, with security off, I played with it a bit. The browser seems to work fine. It defaults to mobile pages and I'd love to turn that off. No Flash as expected.
I also have a problem with sound. When anything produces sound (mp3, video, youtube, even clicking on something) all I get is horrible white noise.
I get constant alerts that things have failed to download. I assume that this is due to the Marketplace issue.
I threw in a micro SD that I had. I have no problems with it sticking as others have reported.
I will admit that this is my first taste of Android. I am a professional developer for other platforms though so I'm not a total knucklehead - just partial.
I hear that an update is imminent. Anyone have any info about this? Will it be done via the SD card? USB?
I REALLY want this to work
Greg
Update:
Looks like a reboot fixed a few things now. I am now connected to my secured network and sound is ok. So now I have a more or less functioning tablet.
You guys aren't having screen issues?
This is posted on the Augen website:
Patch for GENTOUCH78 Tablet (available 1700EST)
Dear Augen Customers (GEN Nation),
Thank you for showing your support and interest in our GENTOUCH78 Tablet. We became aware of the technical difficulties over the past 24 hours, and we will be posting an update for a patch to the software at the following link: http://augen.helpserve.com/ under latest download files within the next 48 hours.
Just to mention a few technical difficulties we have found and are patching are:
the memory size of 284mb not being shown as 2GB will be corrected as this is a glitch in the software.
Android Market place not being able to download apps will be fixed in this patch, as this is a glitch in the software. As of right now the operating system and pre-loaded applications are using .5 Gb so the available space displayed should be approximately 1.5GB.
To solve the issue with the headphone jack being too small for a 3.5 mm headphone connection, we ask you to send us an email to [email protected] with your Name, Adress, eMail Adress along with a proof of purchase. We will be sending you at our expense the 2.5 mm headphones to go along with the unit within 15-20 days. All future products that will be manufactured will have the new patch and a 2.5mm earbud to go along with the unit.
We want to make it a great experience for our customers. We apologize for disappointing some of you, and we are doing our best to make it a great experience at Augen.
Thank you for your support,
Daniel Gofman

the screen sucks

A few gripes maybe you guys can remedy.

Hey everybody,
I am a reformed iPhone loser, I had the original 2G, got the 4 for about a week and a half on release, and a good friend of mine talked me into returning it for a captivate and I have been hooked on droids ever since. I am an IT guy by trade and a tinkerer in general so Android is perfect for me. Found this site and haven't looked back.
Recently my company put me on their verizon plan and I opted for the Charge as I have been very happy with my Galaxy phone from Samsung. My company is cool and doubt they would mind me throwing custom ROMs on this beast, I just have to build up the courage to risk the warranty on this thing. Anyway, now that my overly long introduction has been done, here are a few gripes I've found so far and hopefully you guys can help me with.
The basics (non development related)
1.) I love the factory e-mail app, the fact it handles both my corporate and gmail in one central app is nice. However, the Gmail app still takes priority for whatever reason and all my gmail mail goes to that, but if I manually press refresh on the e-mail app, it will load. I have tried to uninstall the Gmail app but as you all know, it's embedded.
2.) My cappy handled threaded texts very well, my charge seems to break up the bubbles by pages like a normal phone would. I will get seperated messages all the time, hate that.
3.) I get a lot of double text messages, no clue why.
4.) My SD card has already corrupted, I took a picture yesterday, clicked on the small thumbnail in the corner and deleted it from there, all of a sudden all of my pictures turned to small grey boxes with ? symbols. The phone still detected the card and displayed the storage space, but I kept getting a notification the card was damaged. Eventually I formatted it, but then couldn't get it to mount. I physically removed the card and the battery and let the phone sit for 2-3 minutes, then put it back in, and after media scanning, the card was working again. I could then take pictures, and store them normally again.
5.) Random data droppage, from 3G to 1x to nothing, then back to 3G. Never had so many time outs on the web browser before. The WiFi also seems to be pretty bad, sitting next to my router at home, I was getting 1-2 bars?
Development related
1.) Like I said, I haven't even attempted anything yet, but from my initial reading it seems like Samsung and VZW have teamed up to make it more difficult to get root on these phones. On my cappy a simple .zip installation through recovery could get root, but to have to flash a kernel to get root, seems risky and unnecessary.
Hopefully this phone will grow on me as I start to explore the third-party stuff more, I know custom ROMs on my cappy made the phone a completely different beast.
Thanks,
-be
Glad to have u on board with the Charge! Ok to address some of ur issues, the one issue that I seem to have in common with u would be the signal dropping. That has to be the most annoying thing. Its not something I can pinpoint myself, but I would guess it has to be something to do with a faulty antenna in the phone or maybe some issues with the towers. I've taken it up wit VZW and there isnt anything they could do except send me a replacement, which STILL has the reception issues.
Another thing u will notice is that sometimes ur data reception just wont return AT ALL. pulling the sim card and battery for a few mins solves this issue.
When it comes to developement, rooting this phone is as easy as u would think. Flashing a kernel with Odin isn't a pain at all. Very simple. Flash the recovery, then kernel to lock the recovery in. From there, flashing via CWM is easy. U know the drill comin from a Captivate I assume.
Hopefully some of this helps u out man! Don't be scared to take the plunge!!!!

Welcome to the droid charge. for your email problem, open the settings app, scroll to accounts and sync, select your gmail and then uncheck sync gmail. now go to the email app, open your gmail, press menu, press account settings and check email notifications. now go into email check frequency and put it at what youd like.
The data drop problem happens to me maybe once every few months and it will be fixed in the gingerbread update with the new radio software. your sd card problem appears to be solved. the double messages would be solved by downloading a third party messaging app or doing a data wipe (in settings>privacy>factory data reset) but that will wipe everything except for your email and contacts and you may get some of your apps back automatically but for the most part you would have to reinstall redownload them manually
Kernels arent very risky because there is almost no way to file brick this. there is a full odin which will completely bring it back to stock. also if you get a voodoo kernel (almost every kernel) you get improvements to your phone's sound quality, you get root and you get the option to change it from the laggy samsung rfs filesystem to ext4 filesystem which results in faster boot times, faster media scanning, faster app opening, and pretty much everything gets a small speed boost.
Thanks for all the help guys!
I took the plunge yesterday and flashed Humble 1.5.1 using ODIN, other than having it scare the **** out of me twice by failing before I realized I had to put the battery back in once in download mode, it passed with flying colors and I now love this phone so much more. All my problems seem to be solved with this new ROM too, no more double texts, no more email problems, data seems to be more stabile too.
It's faster, it's simpler, it's not doo doo brown, and it's way better on battery. Looking forward to being apart of this community and trying out all the ROMs.

I actually loled at that last sentence.
The data going in and out has been a problem for everyone on every rom at some point. It's a Samsung/Verizon issue. The quick fix is to go into airplane mode for a few seconds, then turn it off. BTW Imnut's just released an update for his kernels a few days ago that has improved performance fairly well, so look into flashing an updated kernel.

[Q] Phone stolen. Any chance to find it?

Hi everibody, a couple of weeks ago my windows phone has been stolen. Of course I went to the police and I did everything what was in my possibility..and I know that there's a localization service for windows phone. I tried to use it but this service searches phones trough the SIM number, not to the IMEI..considering that the thief has thrown away the Sim card I think it's not an useful service at all =_= Do you have any idea to suggest how to find my phone in any way, if it's possible?
Thank you for listening!
Well a couple of weeks may be too late, but its worth a try.
The localization feature uses your live id saved in the phone, and not the sim card (at least that's what I think). So just give it a try. Go to windowsphone.com and sign in using the same id that you have in your phone, and then go to my phone tab. Under that tab, there will be a smaller tab "Find my Phone" which locates your phone.
If your phone is turned on and not flashed, you could locate it without the thief knowing.
Best of luck.
p.s. In case you find it, don't lock and ring your phone immediately. If you do that, the thief will become aware and can switch off or flash your phone. Go to the shown location with Police, and then do it. The ring that the phone use when activated remotely is very weak, and you need to be really close to hear it. In case you have important information on your phone, then you can erase the phone's contents to be safe.
I tried your method but as expected This service finds my phone number and not my Windows live ID, in fact when I try to search my phone I can see it is in my house, because I made a new SIM card with the same phone number and now I am using that on another phone (with different os and imei!!!). I can say this is a very useless sevice =s
Well, if you'd used it within a few minutes or hours instead of within a few weeks, you'd have had a much better chance of it being useful... any anti-theft system can be easily disabled if you give the theif that long!
Tracking a phone by IMEI is possible, but requires the cooperation of the phone company and typically they'll require a warrant (depending on jurisdiction). It'll also only locate the phone to within a few blocks; for full accuracy you need to query the phone's GPS rather than attempt to determine it by tower signal strength.
You should have done this on the day you lost your phone and not a few weeks later.

[Q] error with ACORE Droid Proccess

This is my first post. I am not a programer, well not for 30 years and not since my backups were on a tape, but am fairly good at fixing my own issues with the help of this site, which much of is way over my head. I have don't everything in every thread that I can find here and have some more information that might help everyone figure out this issue.
Phone is a non-rooted EVO 4G lte. Screen captures below should give you all the specifics that you need. If you need more info, please email me!
I get a break from error after I delete contact info/cache from both Contact Storage and People (contacts) apps.
I started having the problem a few days ago and the last three things I installed were:
Adobe Flash (got it from this site and have now disabled and would like to totally remove if any of you know how to do that. There is not option in the settings/apps/adobe to uninstall, just disable.
Skype which I have removed.
2012/3 Live Wall Paper, also removed
I have reset the phone, unmounted and remounted the SD card, moved programs that use contacts from SD card back to phone storage and as I said removed all contacts, disabled Smooth sync for the cloud and the JB workaround and still after all most of the contacts are resynced form Google, the error starts to appear. It doesn't lock up my phone, but occasionally crashes app that I am working in. ROYAL PAIN.
So in short, 1. How can I totally get rid of Flash?
2. Is there someway to do a repair on my contact database without rooting phone
3. There is java mentioned in the error message, I didn't think Droid used java (see how little I really know, so be nice) is there a way to update that service?
4. Other than a hard reset AGAIN, what can I do! (Or after all this would that work this time? I hate going to all that effort and still have same issues) Is there a way to force a reinstall of JB?
I realize that I know just enough to be dangerous, but can follow detailed direction to fix this. I go through way too many phone to root my current phone and take the chance that Sprint wouldn't replace it. I never have a phone last more than a year! And the last quarter of of 2012 I went through 5 phones. Galaxy Nexus didn't like me!
Thanks for the great site and in advance for taking the time to read all of this.
More Info
I have also been deactivating Facebook and that wasn't helping, but many people were saying that was an issue.
Those of us that just started having this issue think it might be a date issue. Is here anything that could do this if someone's b'day is the 29th of February?
I have one of those people and that seems like a strange issue, but heck, humans programs this stuff so I guess anything is possible! It makes sense that a value in a contact field is causing the issue, but a date that only exists every 4 years?
I have not had the error since i fixed this, BUT only about 500 of my 2,500 contacts are installed and I have yet to re enable facebook.
Thanks again!
Pat
