[Q] Smartphone with best flashlight? - General Topics

Hello xda!
as of today i bid farewell to my s3, it has never let me down, the phone was great and its modding community was even better. however the phone has taken its toll of abuse, and this is the second time ive cracked the screen on it .
So its time to get me a new phone, but im not so sure what to get, I use the flashlight a lot and it has saved me from lots of day to day situations.
i was considering getting a oneplus one, but a coworker has that and the flashlight is very weak, theres even a comparison video on youtube specifically between the s3 and one+
So i came to ask here after a bunch of google searches that pretty much got me no answers.
What android phones have the brightest flashlight?
The more mentioned the better, im quite picky with choosing my new phone, even considering staying true to the s3 and getting me a replacement screen haha
thanks
ps the more recent the phone the better, really hoping for one that will get/have a lollipop port

The flashlight on my Note 3 is painfully bright. (I use it for DIY around the house.) The one on the Note 4 is, too.
But the size of those devices is something you either love or hate.
All recent Samsung S and Note devices use the same LED for the flash. So the S5 is also an option.
Haven't tested the flashlight on any other brand.

(Q)Anyone jumped ship from Note 2

Hello
Has anyone defected from note 2? I am really eager to pull the trigger myself. Getting tired of flashing roms just want pure google stock experience. I am having a tough time letting go of this insane battery life tho as well as the 5.5 screen. How is the camera compared to note 2? Thanks for info!

I did but I'm kinda regretting activating my nexus right away because I've lost hotspot now. The speaker Note2 seems louder than the N5. I was having second thoughts about going to a smaller screen but I find it easier to read text on N5. At first the N5 seemed small but they did a good job squeezing a 5in screen in.
I did. Only reason I did though is because my Note 2 screen has been acting up every since I had the glass replaced. I also had the spare battery cradle/charger with the note 2, so going from literally never having to charge my phone (only swap batteries every other day) is going to be pretty rough. Overall I was with you though, tired of flashing roms to get latest android. It is smaller, but definitely not terribly small like some other phones out there. Camera differences are negligible, but I only did a side by side in my room with the light on, so take that for what it's worth.
I'll probably be selling the note 2 on ebay/craigslist once I finally get it fixed. Nexus 5 seems like a solid device, already got some goodies coming for it, including a wireless charging pad.
I'm jumping ship. I'm just tired of having insane specs on a phone just to run TouchWiz. I've tried some AOSP ROMs but seems like there's always a small issue or two that keeps from being a great daily driver. I'm currently on CM 10.1 but still run into issues with GPS and camera.
I'm going to Nexus to run pure Android. I don't need s-pens and cameras watching me watching my phone. My only concern switching is related to Sprint, not N5. Sprint has an awesome visual voicemail feature which doesn't seem to be working well with Hangouts on the Note 2. I'll have to see how voicemail is handled on the N5 since Sprint is hands off.
I am jumping from the Note 2 as well. Just time for something new. I would have gone with the Note 3, but the lack of access to Sprint Spark network was a deal breaker. The size reduction will be welcome, though. Even though I like the Note 2 size well enough, it does get in the way at times.

I'm jumping ship as well. Don't get me wrong, I love my Galaxy Note 2, but as others have said, I value having the latest version of Android without the bloatware. I also find that when I'm going somewhere where I know I will be heavily surfing the net or otherwise needing a large screen, I take my Nexus 7 or Chromebook Pixel. The need for a phablet, while novel at first, has really just become cumbersome to carry around. I also rarely use the S-Pen. The AMOLED screen always annoyed me too -- way over-saturated (great blacks, though). I look forward to OIS on the N5, as a sharp picture on the Note2 is as rare as hen's teeth. The only things I will really miss are the microSD card, removable battery, and OEM flip cover (with built in back cover).
Wow i didnt expect so many replies in such short time. I agree with most of your comments. The battery might not be that big of an issue. I can buy a spare charger and keep it in my office as well as one in the car and i am covered all the way. Not having to wait for samsung to update the software will be a blessing. Besides 4.3 isnt even out and kit kat will be the last update and it might not even come around till early 2015 the way they are going. They have already decided not to port over all of the note 3 features on the 2. All these years i have been flashing and dealing with bugs and annoyances. Time to get something that works out of the box and gets timely updates.

i was debating between a note 3, g2, and the n5. and it's posts like these that make me glad I waited and am getting the n5. my only other android device is the N4, so bloatware, delayed updates, and bugs with custom roms is something that I thought about, but never put too much weight behind them until i see posts like this
I have a gnii and should get my nexus 5 tomorrow. I am hesitant to goto a smaller screen...I love the gigantic glowing blob of a phone. I have the r950 us cellular note 2...so dev. Is limited. I can wait for the plethora of roms and kernels. The s-pen is cool and all...although i havent ran a stock rom for ages. So i dont think I will miss using it to draw dicks on the snapchats all that much.
have high hopes for the nexus, enough to pay my etf and ditch the contract life. USCC sucks so much. That is another huge reason I'm counting on this new nexus.

QFT. I really liked having a phablet when I didn't have a good small form tablet to turn to. Also, I found that actually writing/drawing on the Note 2 was difficult. I now have a Note 8, which is the perfect size for that kind of functionality. Now I can return to a smaller form factor for my phone.
I, too, will miss the HUGE, removable battery. But those are the breaks. I'm hoping that battery performance for me is at least good enough to approximate my Note 2 use. May be picking up a battery pack at some point, too.

[Q] buying nexus 5 to replace S4

Hey,
i am currently galaxy S4 owner. I am interested in buying nexus 5 black 32GB model. If i order now, has the manufacturing improved with regards to microphone issue, speaker issue, and some buttons rattling? I am more concerned about microphone and speaker though. My friend has N5 and there is a microphone issue - no one can really understand him .
Also, any improvements over galaxy S4? I am using cutomized TW 4.3 UEML6 (got updated from samsung two days ago), so its pretty good so far. I just have storage issue with S4 and having snapdragon 600. battery life is medicore, i mean everything is debloated - no samsun crap, not much google crap except gmail and youtube and google settings. GPS + Location is always off. i pull 23 Hours on avg with 2 hrs 58 minutes on screen time. This is when almost everything is off, and usage is few youtube videos (10 minutes) HD, web surfing, texting, and 20-40 min HSPA+ calls.
Is it really worth switching?
I am not having loss going to N5, i mean i dont have to input extra money.
Note: I am a university student that commutes a lot : trains and buses. Also, my carrier uses HSPA+ AWS band (1700/2100) so i am not sure if that has any influence over the battery performance..
Thanks!

I had the GS4, the Nexus 5 is a vastly superior device. As far as the defects are concerned, they aren't as widespread as people make them out to be. Keep in mind that nobody rushes to post "My N5 has no defects!" threads. Mine was a launch day model and it is absolutely flawless. No mic issues (people often think I'm on a landline), no power button rattling, and the speaker volume was fixed with one of the OTA updates. It's MUCH louder now. Battery life is also pretty good, I average between 4-5 hours of screen time. I was 16 hours off charger today with over 2 hrs screen time and about 45 min of calls and I was only down to 55% before I tossed it on the charger. Not quite as good as my Moto X, but still better than pretty much every other android phone I've owned. If it's within your means, I'd say go for it. Nothing beats the stock android experience.
I wanted to buy the S4 but by the time I could save up enoughf money. The nexus 5 came out.
So I purchased it.
The latest and greatest form Google.
Nexus 5.
All I can say is that it been a royal disappointment. Heck Id swap you my N5 for your S4. If I could.
I will not get into the details. Cause I find that the few who have spoken out about the N5 short comings. Have been baned or kicked off XDA.
If a senior member is willing to let me talk. Im willing to have a detailed Technical Debate on why its the worst phone ever made.

You don't need a senior member's permission to speak your mind. Just be respectful and be prepared for some backlash from some of the less mature posters here. I for one would love to hear your opinions. I think it's a great phone, though it certainly isn't the magical unicorn phone that some people make it out to be. I do like it a lot more than I did my S4, though I prefer my Moto X.
I came from the s4 prior to my n5 and haven't regretted the UPGRADE for a second. Battery life is the same for me. No Samsung Knox crap to worry about, unlocked from the get go, early aosp roms run great compared to early aosp based roms for Samsung... and you are always running the latest version of android vs what Samsung is on and my favorite n5 feature... no waiting for carrier branded updates.

I came from a S4. I had a AT&T S4. I was lucky enough to have received mine with AMDL firmware so I could still use Loki to flash firmware. However it was always a big pain when I had to odin/flash back to stock, I had to remove SIM card and not connect to wifi to make sure it didn't even attempt to download the OTA Update that broke loki and made custom firmwares a thing of the past with its locked bootloader.
Also the S4 had so many bugs with any custom firmware. It was normal to get reboot hands where it got stuck on the S4 logo on boot and you would have to turn the phone on and off sometimes 5 times for it to boot. So annoying.
On top of that, the Camera sucked. Not sure if it was just the firmware ,or the camera itself. My S4's Camera (13MP) took worse photos than my iPhone 4S (8MP). In turn, my Nexus 5 now takes WAY BETTER photos than both phones even though it's only 8MP. The focusing, contrast and brightness and shutter speed adaptation is perfect (after 4.4.1 update which included a camera firmware update). HDR function actually works as well. The S4, in both Samsung based ROMS and AOSP roms would always take blurry junky HDR photos and I could never leave it on. Nexus 5 i have no problem taken HDR shots even from a moving car.
Overall I find the Nexus 5 to be a MUCH MUCH better phone than the Galaxy S4. For AOSP / Custom Rom support its hands down better, and camera. It's also slightly faster. (Talking 300mhz..not much). The only downfalls are:
1. Non removable Battery. I loved this on the S4. I had 3 batteries, one would be on a charger, and i'd carry a spare with me and just swap it out when needed so I never had to charge the phone. I could start out each morning with a fresh 100% charge without worrying about plugging in my phone at night.Battery life is the same as the S4. Just I liked that feature.
2. No SD card. Not a huge problem. I had a 32gb S4 and a 64gb microSD card. I thought I couldnt live without it but its fine. I just backup my phone to my PC once every few days just in case something happens. (I liked microSD so if the phone died, I still could get my photos). I got this, the Meenova USB OTG card reader. http://www.meenova.com/st/p/m3r.html Works great! I use it for TWRP backups / nanoids. I also use it to store seasons of TV shows, then copy them over to my phone half a season or so at a time as needed so I dont have to fill up my phone. Very handy.
3. Hardware buttons. I liked the S4's hardware buttons. I've gotten used to not having them, just a preference thing really.
4. Screen. The screen is the same resolution. You will get the same detail on it. However, you're comparing AMOLED to a regular LCD. The AMOLED on the S4 has more "vibrant" colors. It also had a slightly better viewing angle, and higher brightness and contrast in comparison to the S4 screen. Nothing major, however you will notice it if you're a detail freak.
That about sums it up.
All in all, I'm very happy with my switch from my Galaxy S4 to the Nexus 5 and I would do it again given the choice. Never buying another Samsung phone ever. Sticking with Nexus phones from now on.

New Note 5 Owner Here

Y'all are looking at the owner of a brand new Samsung Galaxy Note 5 64 GB in the black. After spending about 4 hours with it I've come to really love this phone. I am coming from spending almost 2 years of a great experience with Windows Phones and if it wasn't for "Big Red" being the only carrier that works at my family's cabin I would probably switch to AT&T to stick with a Windows phone. Unfortunately that left me with 2 choices go to an iPhone which was alright for me in the past or go to an android phone which I have had bad experiences with in the past (note 2, Droid razr m, stratosphere ). Well I chose the Note 5 to try to change my experience with android devices and so far I'm glad I did. Even though if it wasn't for me dropping my Lumia Icon 25 feet onto the ground while hanging a treestand the other day I would still be using it instead of this brand new Note 5.

It was more a bad experience with Verizon than it was the Note 2 and Verizon's refurbished department. I had an Android OS update download corrupted and bricked the phone. It was stock and unrooted. The refurbished phone they sent me then wouldn't connect to any WiFi network at all. The next refurbished phone they sent me would get so hot you couldn't touch it at all. The next one they sent then would not charge due to a bad USB port. Then on top of it every time I had to call them (Verizon ) it would turn into a 3 hour phone call with them repeatedly in the same conversation with the same person referring to me as a member of the opposite sex even after me politely correcting them. So inside of 3 weeks time I went through several phones and repeated abuse from Verizon which tainted my experience with the Note 2. I had a great 3 months with my original Note 2 until the bad update. I so far am extremely happy though with the Note 5

The Note 5 really is a splendid phone. I was really worried as this is my first Samsung phone and a lot of people complain about TouchWiz being slow and bloated. While I can see how it could be considered bloated with the amount of pre-installed apps (a fair amount which are actually useful), I have yet to see the phone perform poorly no matter what I'm doing. The camera is especially quick to load and take pictures, which is usually somewhat sluggish on most phones.
I'm more disappointed that we may never have root access than anything else, but if I had to use a phone without root it would definitely be this phone. It's the only one to really bring unique features versus just a different Android "skin" like most other Android phones. I Particularly enjoy using the S Pen for writing quick notes, and the ability to share the screen between two apps, as well as have floating apps (like the calculator) all at the same time.
I've yet to try any games, so can't comment on the GPU power, but being a flagship phone it must be fairly decent.
While there does seem to be some truth to the multitasking issue (not many apps able to run in the background) I've personally not had any issues yet. I mainly just want to be able to text/browse and listen to music like Pandora at the same time. Hopefully there is a good reason they are not keeping too many apps in the background. Maybe it is to free up space to keep the experience quick (I wouldn't be surprised if it's to allow room for things like the camera to load quickly).
Hardware wise it is a beautiful phone. My only complaint (coming from a HTC One MAX with Dual stereo speakers) is the sound is about average, worse if you're laying in bed with the bottom of the phone resting against your chest/body because it covers up the only media speaker on the phone. Personally I think the speaker would have been better suited on the top of the phone if it had to be located along the side. It feels so nice that when my case came in the mail I took it back off because it felt so horrible compared to the phone being naked. I really hate to put a case on this phone.
New note 5 owner here coming from the LG G3. Loved my G3 but loving this much more in just a few hours. Amazing device I despised samsung due to my wife's S5 but after testing and upgrading to the Note 5 my perception is far different. Glad to be here
I'm loving how many people made the jump from the Note 2 to the Note 5, like myself. It was such a great phone. I still have it sitting on my desk and considering I had unlimited data with it, I do feel a slight tinge of regret. I'm gonna miss being able to load YouTube videos or any web page or song at my heart's content. But that price hike really isn't worth it. I can deal with WiFi hunting. And man this Note 5 is a beast, I didn't think I would ever need another phone again after the Note 2, but this one is significantly better. Web browsing, general multitasking, and the pen especially. Amazing device.

Just switched from Oneplus 2... My thoughts

So I had been living quite contently with my Oneplus 2 for some time now. I was turned onto it by a good friend and got involved in the Pop up events and became very active on there forums. Eventually I got an early invite and scooped up the phone and had been fiddling with it ever since...
Once I saw what the Galaxy S7E was suppose to be, and how it had both the hardware I wanted as well as the super premiuim look, I had to go out and grab one myself.
Right now my S7E is used as my primary "real life phone" and my Oneplus 2 is more of a tinkering phone (rooted and flash to my hearts content).
So I will just make a quick comparison for anyone who has the OP2 or a similar device and is thinking about making the switch..
ALL of these are just my opinion and shouldn't be considered as fact (duhh)
What I like about the Galaxy S7 edge MORE:
1) It feels super premium.. There is almost a certain sex appeal about the phone when you finally get it in hand and really get to feel the build quality. It might sound dumb but it feels ALOT more premium than the Oneplus 2 OR the Nexus 6p. Both how it feels in the had and how visually appealing it is completely blows other phones out of the water..
2) It has certain features that I was left completely without on the Oneplus 2. More specifically android pay and Samsung pay. These are two features that I desperately WANTED to try but never could. For anyone who doesn't know the OP2 lacks NFC (which i think was very silly of them but im sure they have their reasons). Samsung pay for me has been a blessing so far. Ive been able to leave the house with just my phone and forget my wallet and dont have to worry at all! It may be trivial to some but not to me
What I like about the Oneplus 2 MORE:
1) There really is only 1 huge thing I like about the Oneplus 2 so far... The development. The OP2 has been a modding dream. All the different ROMS, Mods, rooting and unlocking fun have been bliss so far. Of course its to early to say Samsung s7e LACKS development because it just came out, BUT it may stay like that for some time... For anyone who hasnt read it these XDA article was pretty sad to read (i mean it made me sad...) http://www.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s7-bootloader-lock-explained-you-might-not-get-aosp-after-all/ SO thats why im keeping my OP2 instead of selling it at the moment.
I will note that for ME the Galaxy S7E HAS INDEED GOTTEN VERY HOT and HAS BUGGED OUT BEFORE. Just yesterday I was switching between Snapchat and Tumblr (....dont ask me why) and the phone got VERY VERY hot. It actually rebooted itself for some reason which was not pleasing to see happen.
If anyone has ANY questions about thinking to make the switch please feel free to shoot me a message! I will try and upload some comparison pictures later today or tomorrow as I think some members would value that. Also please let me know if you guys want me to do some case reviews (I already racked up 7 cases...)

would you recommend the S7 in 2017 ?

Hello , I'm considering upgrading my 4 years old HTC M8 and I'm looking at the Galaxy S7 , LG V20 , LG G6 ( Not plus ) , HTC 10 .
After reading last night about the S7 on reddit a lot of owners were complaining about battery life and screen burn .
what's your experience with the S7 or S7e ? would you recommend it over the other devices I mentioned ? is there anything else I can get within the price range ?
I've had an S7 (G930F) since it came out. A few months ago I broke it so bought an LG G6. After a week I found the display not as good (can't see the screen in strong sunlight while using the camera), camera interior to the old S7, missed touchwiz (surprisingly), but the biggest thing was the ergonomics. The S7 is the perfect size for one handed use. Phones are getting too big or top heavy to one hand easily. I've now bought a dual SIM G930FD and won't be looking at newer models till this croaks it. I've noticed the flat S8 is a millimeter narrower than the S7, so if you have small hands could be worth a look.
Pretty sure everyone here would still recommend the S7 in 2017 otherwise they would have bought a new phone...
Already threads identical to this one
I ve had several LG Flagships, my opinion is to stay away. Network connection problems (signal gets lost randomly and not coming back if you dont reboot) since G2 maybe G, bootloops in a bunch of models and image retention problem in their screens. LG Mobile marketshare is very small and they don't care making reliable phones.
My advice, stay with brands that have served you well or they belong to the big players. Samsung, Apple, or Huawei. Maybe Xiaomi too. Or you can stay in HTC's territory if you were satisfied.
Personally last phone on my hands is Galaxy S7. Battery life is as in every Android phone, some security patches or play services versions can cause battery drains but updates can fix it after a while. Otherwise problems to non problematic devices are caused by third party apps or by disabling preinstalled apps & services.
I bought it in June this year and haven't regretted it for a second. I'd take an S7 over phones you named any day.
The G6's design is nice but there's all there is to it.
If you're not a camera guy, try getting OnePlus 3T or 5. Other than that, I have no recommendations.
I just got one. Coming from S5 running RR. So far I miss the replaceable battery but love the camera. Performance I would say is about the same. I'm leaving the S7 stock for now, just switched to Nova launcher.

Go for the S7, I haven't heard anyone complaining about it so far.
sure...im using s7 for 10 months and no problem at all....few little problems here and there 99% solved with update and now this is really a good phone with good size( size is very very important for daily use)
If you want an in-its-whole reliable and secure phone with a fast camera, your only options are Apple and Samsung devices if we talk about the high end category. I ve made this conclusion after changing lots of phones and reaearching about them a lot. I am not saying you can't find something else that fits your requirements, but it's possible that issues, bugs etc you did not expect, may come up out of the blue.
So, if you don't like iPhones, you 'll have to choose a Samsung device and S7 is onw of them.
All that is my opinion, one can say this is not like this, I had that device and it was like blah blah. What I say is based on possibility and statistics and I like to help people as I ve done some stupid things in the past concerning phone buys and learned from my mistakes.

I just got one. Coming from S5 running RR. So far I miss the replaceable battery but love the camera. Performance I would say is about the same. I'm leaving the S7 stock for now, just switched to Nova launcher.

I've been enjoying mine, granted only been few days so far but I'm impressed. I do miss functionality of RR but I'm sure I'll get use to lacking those features. Size is good and has a headphone jack
