[Q] USB Tethering (PDANet) with VM on mac - General Questions and Answers

Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone has ever successfully made PDAnet working for virtual machines? I have Mac OSX yosemite with PDANet installed, and i wanted to give my guest VM (running CentOS 6.5 inside VirtualBox) internet access because it requires dependencies to be installed over the net.
Has anyone been able to get this working? I fiddled around with the different networking options on my VirtualBox config, but I had no luck. I figured Bridge Networking on the USB would work.
Tethering with a Moto X, which sends internet correctly on Mac OSX Yosemite.

Yes it will work
The most you would need to do is make sure that you have it installed on your Mac set up your VM network and choose bridge connection that will allow your host(mac) to give access to your guest(Centos). I have done this several times and it works without fail.

That damn Remote Desktop Mobile simply doesnt work!

I dont get it. Why it is not working for me on any computer, with windows xp, windows 7 and windows server 2008?
I tried it on several wifi-networks, I get an IP and everything like surfing on the web or contacting the router etc works.
But if I try to connect via Remote Desktop Mobile, it stucks on "Connecting.."
What I tried:
- connect from other desktop-computers via remote desktop - works.
- add a new user with password because someone told me that is relevant - dont work
- connect via IP or Hostname, with Username and password and without - dont work
- Tried several versions of RDM on my hd2 - none works.
Does anyone has a hint for me what I could try else to get this crap working? Yes of course I could make a VNC - Server and connect via a viewer like dotnet-vnc-viewer (actually I tried that and it works, so why not via remote-desktop-mobile?)
Personally, I can connect with the IP address and nothing else (I actually use a dynamic DNS service, but that just resolves a name to an IP, so it's the same thing). If I do it like that then I get my normal windows login prompt and can enter a username and password.
What actually happens if you do that?
I assume you have been able to connect in the past with other winmo devices. Did you enable remote access on the host machine. Right click My Computer--Remote Access Tab. Win7 can be funny. You may have to disable enhanced security. I've had no problems connecting, but I only connect on my home wifi.
In order for remote desktop to work you MUST have a password in your account !
In addition to requiring a password, the WinMo RDP client does not support Network Level Authentication for RDP connections. You need to disable that on the host.
i seriously doubt you will be able to connect with the mobile version of RDP to either a Windows 7 or a Server 2008 Machine. The most likely case will be that you can not connect because Win7/2008 thinks you are on a unsafe OS -.-
You get the same problem when trying to connect to a windows 7 remote desktop from XP as well. Nothing new at all

I can connect fine to Windows 2008 R2, Windows 2008, Windows XP SP1, SP3 (didn't test SP2), Windows 2003 Server, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. Its not everything, but mostly everything. I tested this with the stock ROM and EnergyROM.

I agree. You are warned that it is "potentially unsafe to connect". However, you can simply click something like "Connect anyway" and check off "Do not warn on future connections to this computer". Problem solved.
And to be clear, this is NT 6.x RDP Client to NT 5.x Host.
NT 6.x ~ Vista/7 & Server varients, NT 5.x (XP, etc).
This may not be the problem or any help to you as there are probably other more technical reasons why its not working for you.
I also struggled for a long time to get working but it never did but as I didn't really need it I never tried too hard. Until one day I Installed Windows 7 Ultimate. Then it just worked as it should.
So I assumed you had to have the Ultimate Version of Windows for it to work. I may be wrong though.

Try to disable the phone, set it in flight mode, and just use wi-fi... btw have you enabled your server as an "terminal server"? i noticed that i just can connect to "terminal servers" never could connect to a work station, just a server.....
Strangely enough I just set this up yesterday, and it worked fine connecting to a Windows 7 box.
I just edited the port used (on PC I wanted to control) and forwarded the port through my router...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp\PortNumber
I then allowed blank passwords in Local Policies...
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Administrative Tools\Local Security Policy -> Local Policies\Secuirty Policies\Accounts: Limit local use of blank passwords (Disable)
It connected fine over the network and over the internet (using dynadns org account). It was impractical to use though because of the resolution and my fat sausage fingers, but still pretty cool.

Ok guys, thanks for your help so far.
Okay, I will try to clarify my situation:
I already tried to connect with Flight-Mode, only wifi working. I CAN ping my HD2 and can ping the host I want to connect to.
My Account on the host HAS got a password set.
I already TRIED to put in only the IP (dont work) or either the IP, USER (dont work) OR IP, USER and PASSWORD. (dont work).
It's not a OS-Problem as far as I see, because from my WINXP Laptop I CAN connect to a WIN 7 PRO box AND a Windows Server 2008, so the Computers are configured correctly I suppose. On Windows 7, I also checked "Allow connections from any hosts running any version of Remote Desktop Mobile" (lowest security).
What the hell is wrong.. I flashed another ROM on my hd2 because I thougt maybe its ROM-related.. but that didnt help =/
to bad :-((
Thats to bad... i have a win2003 (rc2) at home, enabled Terminal server and open for rdp in my firewall/router and flashed miri v09 yesterday, opened rdp on my hd2 from work just now and connected trough gprs without doing any changes to my hd2... but like i sayed i have just been able to connect to servers..
mideel, check your messages
Thanks for your effort so far, no solution is avaiable for me yet.
I tried the hints of waxfresh which he sent me over PM (Portforwarding, set a Password, disable Firewall / Antivirus (I dont use any)..)
damn..like I said before.. a VNC connection worked without problems and configuration of ports or anything at LAN, so why doesnt it just work with Remote Desktop..

nice to read that I'm not the only one with this problem
Maybe together we can find out whats wrong with us or our versions of remote desktop mobile.
I'm currently on 2.10 german custom ROM if that matters, but the problem exists for a long time now, used 2.02 before.
task 29
Have u all done the MTTY( task 29) before you flashed a new rom?
Nope i didnt.. but could THIS be the problem? I flashed only 4 times since I got my HD2. Dont know how often I should do this task29

[Q] Tether for a computer that is currently on a network WITHOUT internet access

Well, let me go over the situation and then I will explain in more detail. I know that this question is probably a bit technical and will probably require some knowledge of windows networking in order to tether with my Android. I'm trying to use usb tether from my Nexus one (froyo 2.2) running Rod R4 based off of Cyanogen R3. It works fine on any other computer. I'm trying to tether it to a Windows 7 corporate computer. I would like to get internet on a work computer . The pc at work is hooked to a inTRAnet and is firewalled, and IT is taking FOREVER to get my new login. Even though I don't have admin, I can easily run Firefox portable and hook up my Nexus to the pc with usb tether without a problem. Now HERE is the problem! Firefox keeps looking to the company network to access the internet as opposed to my Nexus usb tether. I have messed around in Firefox connection settings Tool>Options>Advanced>Network>Settings. Tried changing the proxy several times. I was able to stop Firefox from "looking" for internet on the company inTRAnet, but not able to redirect it to my Nexus usb tether. I have used Tmobile proxys and ports, I have used apps such as NetGenie Lite, NetTools,Network Discovery, Network Info II to attempt to find the necessary IP config to proxy, but no luck. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! I have searched all over Google and XDA but I couldn't find anything even close to this situation. Thank you in advance for any help in the matter.
EDIT: Sorry, I didn't read your post all the way through, sorry. I'm not sure how you'd do that. I'm pretty sure you'd actually need admin to do it, the only way I can think of doing that would be to set your phone's connection as the default one in windows networking. As far as I know, Firefox asks windows what network interface to use. There MAY be a way to change it in the config files, but I don't know how you'd go about doing that (be careful if you're going to mess with them, or else you might break your FF install).
Well from what i know i dont think you would be able to get the computer to set up the virtual connection adapter in the network connections since you have no admin privileges on that computer, What you can however do is get another Portable USB drive or a blank cd-rom disc and set up/burn a live image of the Ubuntu distribution onto it.
(you can find many other live linux set up distributions though...but i prefer Ubuntu)
Then just boot into the BIOS device selection by restarting the computer, select the USB drive/cd-rom disc which contains the live image.
Once you are in the operating system, connect your phone let the system find the phone's network adapter connection and voila, you should have internet access.
This method is sort of a hassle, but would work for many people behind proxies, firewalls, etc in schools, government buildings, and etc.
Just ask if you need a more detailed explanation.

[Q] Networking individual VMware images for Android testing

Good Afternoon,
I have been rather stumped the past few weeks trying to solve a problem on my own and finally wound up here. I am trying to use VMWare running Windows XP SP3 to run Bluestacks so I can emulate an android app we are working on. Part of the rules of our application is that you can only use the app for so long before it blocks your ip (not my choice) for the day.
For testing purposes, I would like to be able to run at least 5 virtual machine images all running instances of the ip under different ip addresses. From searching around, it seems like since VMWare uses NAT by default, I need to switch to bridged networking instead. I am currently using a linksys wireless g usb adapter to provide network connection to the virtual machines.
So the Questions would be:
If I connect the usb adapter to the virtual machine and then make clones of that virtual machine and then set up Openvpn, would that solve the issue?
Is there a way to force each xp virtual machine to connect to a proxy instead of using the ip under NAT ? [I've configured proxy settings under internet settings but it still pulls the ip from my Time Warner Cable account]
Would running instances of openvpn under linux and then forcing a system wide proxy and then using virtualbox to simulate xp get around all of that?
It's kind of a pain and I've been running in circles for awhile now. Sorry to have to come here for answers. Thanks for any and all help.

[Q] help with android iptables

Hi.
Im not 100percent sure that my question is related to android, but i think it is..
I have an android phone (zte blade). And i use mobile internet on it.
I have a Desktop with windows operating system. The desktop is connected to internet by only one means which is my android phone through Wifi hotspot.
I have Vuze(Azureus) installed on windows. The problem is Vuze never gets the incoming tcp / udp ports opened i think. The torrent stays on yellow mark all the time. If i make a NAT/Firewall test from vuze it reports an error saying connection is refused.
I checked out windows firewall and it allows vuze. I even turned off the windows firewall and the NAT/Firewall test still shows error.
So, the possible issues are EITHER my ISP has restricted the ports OR my android phone is blocking the ports (iptables). Im using Cyanogenmod7.2-recent nightly and it has iptables (i checked through terminal emulator)
And vuze website lists the ISPs that block the ports, and mine is not in their list. So the only issue i think is with my android iptables.
I scanned for opened ports with an android app. The vuze specific port is not open, but i think the scan is for the android os, and may or maynot be same for windows depending on how the Wifi hotspot works.
And i request your help only regarding android issue.
My QUESTIONS...
-- Is the android phone acting as router when we use wifi hotspot to share its internet.
-- Is my PC getting direct access to internet or is it going through the iptables of android.
-- how to deal with ports with iptables on android phone. Please give me commands or an easy way.
Bump.

[SOLVED] Syncing with Windows: Wifi OK, USB Tethering no longer OK

Hello,
I got a new smartphone running Android 12 through Evolution X — because the original ROM was stuck at Android 9.
Syncing an organizer app with Windows through USB tethering worked for a few days… and stopped working all of a sudden with its familiar "Connection error. Unable to connect. Check firewall settings on your computer."
"ipconfig" shows the USB tethering connection, and the IP + port # in Android match those used by the Windows appp.
Syncing through wifi works.
Exact same issue on another computer.
Disabling the firewall on the computer makes no difference.
Any idea where I could look? I wonder if I didn't enable/disable a feature by mistake.
Thank you.
---
Edit: Found it. I just had to sync once letting Windows use whatever IP it wanted, and then use it to assing the address manually.
