Nandroid backup advice - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm looking for advice on how to handle my nandroid backups.
Nandroid backups take up a lot of room which quickly adds up if one has 3 or more backups.
Is there a problem with transferring the backups to a pc or usb flash drive instead of keeping them on the phone?
Can they still be used to restore if not on the phone? How?
I prefer not to put them in the cloud.
Thanks

I always transfer mine to my PC. When you want to restore it just transfer it back.

I'm with aerowinder, always keep one on the device

I try to, but sometimes I don't have the space. But I agree, it's definitely good practice to keep one on your device.

I keep them on a meenova with 64 gigs on it. Plenty of space and I always have it handy in case things go south.

You can remove /data partition when you do not have enough space. It can still help and you restore data when you go home.

That's crazy. Besides, I'm talking long term storage. I have a TON of games and I also like to store music locally and nandroids take up a LOT of space.

[Q] Whats the best way to back up and install on a replacement phone?

I got my replacement phone from amazon due to the cracked screen. What is the best/easiest way to make a backup of settings and apps and load it onto a replacement phone? Both old and new are rooted. And then along the same lines, what is the best way to wipe personal info from the phone I am sending back?
Use titanium backup and rom manager

Make sure you pay for the full version of Titanium Backup, it makes life so much easier from the free version.
So buy titanium premium and backup to the SD card? I have the free version but it doesn't seem to back up in a way I can restore on the new phone easily at all.
Don't forget to backup your contacts to sim card or use google backup.

Holy crap! I've been using the free version for the longest because I didn't think Pro would add anything worthwhile. I just took a gander and saw "0-click batch restore"! , that alone is worth what the pro version costs.

When you restore, never restore system data, it'll likely cause random issues/bugs. You either want to restore "missing apps + data" (though, I've had issues that I believe could be tied with this option) or only "missing apps".
Lol yea the 0 click batch restore is pretty fkn amazing.
Like that infomercial guy said you batch then "set it and forget it"

Yes, it is a good idea. People make mistakes. Having an up-to-date backup has been invaluable to me on a couple of occasions. After thinking I knew what I was doing and became a little more confidant, I got lazy and did not backup to my pc. Not much fun. Lost a bunch of things, but losing the pics of my wife and kids bothered me the most.

Alternative to buying the pro version of TiBu

I love TiBu, but I'm a cheap guy. I like the fact that you can sync with Dropbox. So instead of buying the full version, I downloaded DropSpace (Free) and set it to automatically backup the folder of my choice (in this case the TitaniumBackup folder) at the same schedule as my TiBu. Problem solved!
P.S. I also use AppExtractor to restore the last state of any apps I had installed in NANDROID backups. My Titanium is set to back up new apps and newer versions, so it skips over new data in old programs. Doing things this way ensures that I have the most recent data without having to run Titanium AND create a NANDROID backup. Saves me time!
Anyone else have any other alternatives to Awesome but paid apps?
If this post gives you ideas, I wont mind a bit of thanks

Wait till you have to restore a lot of apps. This method won't save you a single second! It's well worth paying for Titanium Backup for many other reasons but being able to just click restore once and leave it to it is soooooo much better!
MIUI=Problem solved. If you can root, you can flash a Rom, and MIUI has batch backup and restore built-in, including contacts which I don't believe TiBu does. I think Cyanogen might also have this capability, though I didn't check when I test flashed CM9.
That said, if you don't want to flash a Rom capable of this then it's definitely worth the money for TiBu Pro because restoring one at a time is a PITA, and Google Apps Backup will not run again if it fails to complete the first time after an SBF.

Zing.
For what it's worth, TiBu Pro's auto restore is REALLY nice, but the price is also pretty steep IMO.

Not understanding what you're saying here...
If a guy comes to me and offers me what TiBu offers and he says give me $6 and I'll hook you up, I'll pay the man if I'm not capable of doing it myself for free. But in this case, I don't mind a little extra work to save me the cash. Besides, the more simplified a process is, the less you know about it. And when I repair and re-install other peoples phones, I cant convince them all to buy a $6.58 app to use possibly only once.

I did purchase the key for AppExtractor. It was a cheaper $1.99. A 3rd of the price. I'd been looking for this functionality for so long that I just impulse bought it. It allows you to restore what you want from your NANDROID backups. You can select all and have it just run. That should take the same amount of time as Titanium, right?

I can agree with you about doing something yourself for free and it is impossible to get someone to spend seven bucks on something they may use once. I have the pro version and it is one of my greatest tools when it comes to customizing roms to my liking;not just restoring apps but modifying framework apks.
Forgive the total derail, but batch restore is totally worth the price of tibu

It would probably be about the same time to restore, but to backup is a pain. You have to turn your phone off to create the backup, whereas with Titanium you can leave it running in the background.
It's good to have more choices though.

[Q] Transferring Tab 7.7 data

Probably kind of a "n00b" question, but I can't find a real complete answer. I am seriously considering selling my Tab 7.7 and getting the new Nexus 7. I have the 6810 version. How do you make a back-up of all my Apps(Games mostly) and game saves so they can be transferred to a new tablet? Is it even possible?
Thanks for your time,
Rob
you can backup using titanium backup if your device are root.
Thanks edan,
Is rooting the only why? And will the New tablet need to be rooted as well to load the backup to?
Rob
if you want to use titanium backup. both device need to be root.
there are others backup apps without root. but i havent use any at all since i'm sticking with titanium and all my device are root. so i cant recommend on without root backup apps.
Yeah, probably say that Titanium Backup (Pro) is the most useful app I've ever bought. Possibly first app I bought, and still using to this day. Very useful and easy when transferring data between ROMs.
Sorry, can't comment on non-rooted backup apps, because they don't compare....

Thanks for the info, edan. I would like to not have to root if at all possible, so hopefully someone else will recommend some apps.

[Q] Google Photos storage question...

Looking at this Pixel 2 as my next phone and saw that Google Photos backs up to the cloud. Is that able to be turned off?
Would rather not have cloud storage. Also, coming from the HTC One M8 and its photo gallery. Is there not a gallery in this phone?
Thanks.

You can turn off uploading but the photos is your gallery.
Sent from my Pixel 2 using Tapatalk
There is an option to turn off backup & sync within the Photos app. Settings > Backup & Sync.
Photos is the only gallery app but you can always install another (though I haven't).
why would you turn it off? its exclusive to pixel 2 owners that you get until 2021 free original quality storage. you might regret if you dont do the automatic back up some point but then your choice is still your choice. got people complaining where are their photos coming from non nexus or pixel devices after factory data reset, then they blame google because google should give them what they need coz we are google. had hard times explaining.

Some people don't want Google to have everything. It is the way it is. What if Google introduced a bug that made it use mobile data and viola high bill because some of these people are on a metered connection.

Although I understand your point, in your specific example, if someone was that worried about metered data, then they would also likely have their phone monitor data usage and provide a warning once it exceeds a certain threshold. It's a basic feature built into android and wouldn't require disabling the key feature in what is probably the greatest FREE photo sync app in the world.

Yeah, that's another valid point. But to clarify, the iCloud accounts that got hacked were celebrities. They are much more of a target than the rest of us.

^^This.
A little scepticism is healthy.
I would prefer to control my own data and storage. Too many stories of people either losing their data when the cloud services shut down or having to pay to get their data back. Or the photobucket fiasco.
On a side note, IMO, 2 things would make the Pixel 2 perfect, an sd card, and a removable battery. Hell, if my M8 had a removable battery, I wouldn't be thinking of getting a new phone.
Thanks for the replies. Will most likely be ordering the Pixel 2 soon.

Not ideal, but on the subject of SD cards, I think I've read that you can use the adapter that came with the device to attach a flash drive for OTG. Not positive on that, just something I vaguely recall reading over the past week.

I figured OTG was possible. Have my M8 set up to save pics and TiBkp backups to my SD card. Have a few apps that I backup regularly. I just hate not having the SD card for the backups in case the phone crashes and I have to do a factory reset or worse, not being able to recover anything from phone. Had a few times with the M8 where battery got too low and phone lost settings and reset itself. Had to reflash OS and restore apps and data. PITA, to say the least.
I know what some of you guys are going to say, that that's why you back up to the cloud. How many times do you hear of people assuming their stuff is backed up to the cloud, when come to find out, it wasn't.
There are times where I have poor cell reception and I put the phone in airplane mode and no Wi-Fi access, then I don't have any cloud backup. It would be so much easier just to have an SD card.

I feel ya, I have my own concerns about big data and digitizing all of my own content, so you won't get that from me. Sadly just not going to be a mainstream opinion these days.
