Hello all!
This is my first post here and I thank all for comments in advance - they are very appreciated!
So I was very new to the aspect of rooting when I first got my Sprint GS3, but I read posts here and watched many tutorials on youtube and successfully rooted my device using Odin, then using Goomanager flashed CM 10.1 without a hitch. I had a custom kernel as well ( do not remember the name ), so when I updated my ROM I went hunting for new kernels as well. On an XDA (forgot the name/link) thread I found kernels compatible for CM 10.1, but when I flashed it my phone got bricked. No drivers found, won't boot into recovery or download, taking out and replacing battery wont work - not even an LED light. I said that I lost it and received a new one, but I was wondering why it got bricked (I have a bad gut feeling I did something as dumb as getting an international version kernel as I heard they would not be compatible?) And if there are links for a kernel for a stock firmware rooted GS3 - I have not seen one and I am nervous on finding more seeing as how I already bricked one phone. Thanks for the help!!! I just want to be more educated on this so I do not have to spend another 150$ in replacements. Thanks!

Just stick with the kernel provided in the rom you are using. The developer picked or made that kernel for a reason.

The reason that I wanted another kernel is since Cyanogemods stock one does not let me OC/UV and those are options that I would like to have

Only flash kernels that are in your device threads. Next time leave out what you did to get it replaced as that is fraud and not looked at well here.

Ok that is just dumb. Make sure you understand what your doing before you do. Remember the min you flashed a custom rom. You no longer have any warranty.

I'm taking my time now and i read as much as i can to see the issues others are having. been new here is like a kid with a box of new toys "want to play with all of them at the same time". thats another reason i registered, to thank all the great developers that take time to make such a great roms for us to enjoy :good:
I had a hard brick a few months ago I sent it it in for a jtag repair and it works perfectly it is a lot cheaper than getting a replacement phone

Hi guys ! This is my 4th Galaxy and every time first thing I've done before ROOT -->CWM--->FULL Back up within CWM--> Unlock with CODE--> Install CM --> Enjoy
That was my formula always and with it I'd be able to save Stock/Rooted fresh OS in case something needs to be done and because I did it with CWM it's really easy to restore. But this time I think I'll hold my horses. Too much chatter about things that was not a problem before ...some OTA updates, lock bootloader, etc. Can anyone create post that cannot be replied to with Q/A that matters and update it as more info become available. I mean questions like should I OTA update (if one available), is good root method available or not, is CWM available etc. Just a few things that EVERYONE in here needs to know. Because as of right now everything is a mess. Bootloader hacked ..but it's not REALLY hacked ...no CWM on official page yet ...some sim unlock method available (non code) etc. I got this nice device and REALLY want to do above formula and start enjoying my i337 but because so many questions and no proper answers I can't. So I guess what I am saying Moderator create Office Q and A that CANNOT be replied to and just update with latest info that checked and working properly. Because too much noise right now. I hope I am not alone asking for some clarity.

Or you could take a little of your precious time to read what is already posted...but I understand how you have better things to do.
There is no real "clarity" of it. It is what it is for now. There are plenty of discussion and info about everything here.
Let's keep all of it out of this thread for now.
What is the best full functioning custom Rom for desire s? I currently have cm7.2, but it's got problems with the Wi-Fi, it's good, but it's boring I would like an Android 4 based rom like cm10.1, but yet again that has bugs, I looked into the pac man rom looks great wanted it, but download was corrupted couldn't find another file for the desire s
Please help me find a good rom that's as great as stock but better and stable. Would like a jellybean look.

Hi, old quote from a mod.....
"Best" ROM/kernel threads are not allowed on XDA.
Please test these things for yourself.
This is the only way you will get an unbiased opinion, and then, you can decide for yourself if it meets YOUR needs.
ps: pacman link is there, search..
Sorry for butting in, as @jmcclue said there are links in the PAC thread (mirrors) to the ROM. The link in the first post is corrupted (well, just not working when trying to flash). I think on page 180 or so of the thread there are alternate links that work.
Just as I downloaded that one and it worked fine. Even (fingers crossed) the random reboot problem I was getting initially has stopped!
I've moved from this, to CM10.2, to Carbon, back to this. It's such an amazing sturdy ROM (battery life). Ok, I've yet to tinker with the performance issues (slight lag...but doesn't impede progress or detract from it overall).
I suppose as an aside I tried the CM11 nightlies and was getting the Status 7 when trying to install. But I'm guessing that's just a recovery issue (I hope). Found a 'cheat' video where you can edit a file in the rom to bypass recovery checks...but not advisable.
Going to continue to use PAC and wait patiently for an update.
Thank you, I have been looking around I did eventually find the link earlier today for the pacRom file that works, I did't think that there was another download link until I went to the end of the thread, the very end and people had posted saying it was corrupted and people were referring to use a link previously posted, now I know that people have put links in threads I will look harder and think better. I have the rom now, yet to flash it though, hope it works out fine. I hate being new to things this is the first forum I signed up too, still getting used to the rules I will eventually get the hang of it been told off for posting to many threads searching more now. Well thanks again.

No harm done. Another little tip for ya, if u want a rom, and the op download links r down then at the top of the page ul see a box "search this thread" type mirror and then press search, usually (if there is a mirror) ul find easy.
Ive researched probably 7 minutes and do not have anymore time because I have to leave for work. Without lecturing me on how to search the forums, please for the sake of humanity, could someone answer this yes or no question.
Will faux 123 kernel work on my Stock Verizon Galaxy S3 schi535 4.1.2 unlocked bootloader with TWRP? I would be truly grateful if someome could provide their opinion if I should do this or not. My goal is to have a good gaming phone but still has battery to get me through the day.
Thank you
Yes. Just make sure you flash the one made for d2vzw TouchWiz. I've never tried the kernel myself so I can't provide an opinion on it. Best thing to do is try it out and see how it runs.
Thank you for your advice to use the d2vzw kernel. More likely than not, I would have flashed the incorrect kernel. I will give it a try.
Ill just go ahead and say,
THREAD CLOSED
Hey, thanks again bro. Your suggestion probably saved me a huge amount of hassle because I more than likely would have flashed the wrong version. Ive been using root for nearly 3 years and this was my first time flashing a custom kernel/rom.
Incase anyone cares, faux123 kernel for vzw gs3 schi535 4.1.2 rooted unlocked bootloader is realer than real deal holyfield. I have completely gotten rid of the "homepage lag" after clearing the ram, and my battery is sitting at 70% after 12 hours of use.
Highly recommended.
Hello.I opened this thread to say how you found this awesome forum.First me
My first phone was an Samsung Galaxy Y S5360.I bought it and started to touch it.Was my first phone with android and his 3 inch screen was so big for me (until i held in hand other phones ).After 1-2 weeks i was asking myself if i can customize it more.I spent hours, days searching themes.I searched themes and i found symbian themes for nokia lol.Until i found a theme on an forum named xda.I was so happy at that time because finally i found a theme. Then i saw that there is a subforum named development.I was surprised to see so many things.Next days i rooted it and so on.After some time i learnt the basics.
I don't know if you believe me,but i never readed xda rules
This is my story, how i found xda forum.
Let me know your story
This is my story :
After using stock un-rooted gingerbread on my I9070P i got bored. So i was trying to root it but all I9070P rooted firmawe links were down so i have dowloaded and installed via odind rooted firmaware for I9070. Phone booted , everything was working fine. Than suddenly phone started re-booting. So (i'm taking loong short cut here) i flashed official JB 4.1.2 XXLPE. Than CoCore than Nexus theme and my first Costom Rom CyanogenMod 10.1. After flashing CM i lost EFS and by flashing 3-file gingerbread i have recovered my phone. (Another short cut here) I have re-flashed CM 10.1 (it was almost final CM 10.1 build) and i got excited obout Costom roms.
This is my story.
Edit :
I havent read XDA rules too ?
Wysłane z mojego nexusowego tablecika.....
i never used my as default i used to hack and flash custom firmwares on my nokia 5230 few years back, then i decided to switch to an android and bought s advance. I was aware about xda earlier and went straight on searching for i9070 section, and found terminology of android is different than symbian and after a little research i found the root by Shàan and flashed cocore kernel and phone just felt way better
after that when cm came i flashed that and xda is just a great platform for skilled and beginning devlopers as well as end users who always want to make the most of their devices and customize it very often.
I found XDA when I started with my Omnia I8000 windows 6.5 phone back in 2010. Was a great help but my first forum to join was Modeco. I stayed with XDA after I bought my first android phone, Galaxy Ace. Was great fun working with the themers and modders there. Have been with this forum from the start when we shared things with the Galaxy S. Have enjoyed the time here learning all sorts of things. What kept me here? Modaco failed in developing things for S Advance while XDA for the Advance has developed into a great place! Not sure I want to get a new phone for a while though so here I am and still enjoying it.
I bought this phone in February 2013, used stock ROM (GB later JB) for about 8 months and was not happy with my phone, it was lagging etc. etc. etc.
So then I made an account on a Dutch android site and asked if anyone knew how I could get my device run properly.. Someone said something about CyanogenMod and I've seen that blue man a few times and wondered what is was but never searched it.
Then I came to this forum and encountered the thread From stock GB to custom JB (noob friendly). I started flashing CM 10.1 but I got bootloops the first times I tried, but on some point it finally booted and I was happy as hell, and since then I made a XDA account and started playing with my phone Now I'm trying to get the max outta this originally ****ty phone before buying another one.
My story.
My brother give it to me his Motorola Defy two years ago, and toll me about a forum in spain called HTCmania (and in this moment he buy the S advance), In HTCmania were spanish roms and links to a forum called XDA with the rom CM10, so in a summer i learn how to flash roms, in march of 2013 i get a Ace 2 from my mum with GB and rooted i upgrade to JB with Kyrillos V7b + MC8 kernel, i use that untill june when i upgrade to Kyrillos V8 + MC8 kernel, i was with that, i put CM10.2 i february, in march (this is a big month for me) i build my first custom rom for S advance (my brother give it to me because he buy an Iphone 5S) and in last days of march i change my Ace to S advance with carbon and AOSP, and with that to now, i build some roms for Ace 2, i´m not going to change my phone at least it have 3 years (may of next year)
I never read XDA rules, never use the search (well, i use it once)
So i´m in this world for about 2 years and two months.
I found XDA when I learned that I could update my Galaxy mini to Gingerbread (from Froyo), and yet I couldn't do it via "Check for updates" on Settings. So I searched for a solution and I found it on the Galaxy mini subforum here on XDA.
Then I just started reading, learning and blah until I compiled CyanogenMod 9.1 for my Galaxy mini, and then hacked a little while providing both ParanoidAndroid (Jellybean 4.1) and AOSP.
AOSP (Android 4.0.4 - ICS) turned out to be a great success for the Galaxy mini, one of the most used ROMs as of today I believe.
And then I bought the S Advance and did what I know of Paranoid Android, the difference was that at that time, there was already a port of ParanoidAndroid in the works (by Shaaan), so, I looked for an alternative, and I built P.A.C, the "first" Android 4.2 ROM that didn't have the problems of the others, OMX's and audio stuff, not because I am good at coding, but because I had luck, a lot.
I knew XDA on 2012, when my brother bought a LG P720 Optimus 3D. I've always developed, but for Symbian OS (with QT) and iOS. Always modified phones (developed my own ROMs for Nokia 5230, Nokia E7 and Samsung GT-I8910 Omnia HD), reflashed etc. Was the first time that I modified an Android phone, I changed recovery and ROM
A lot of other times I returned here to modify my girlfriend's Galaxy Ace.
On 24 July 2013 I bought my first Android smartphone, janice. Came with 4.1.2 LQG started to modify it since 2nd day with root and CoCore, deodexed, then started to decompile, modify and recompile system apps plus install V6 Supercharger script. The 5th day I bricked for the first time, then unbricked (by reflashing stock through Odin) and reinstalled everything (including mods )
On 30 September I registered an account here (under the nick Tesla-MADAL93) since I was trying to compile ChameleonOS 4.2, and I was stuck on an error about libhardware_legacy (vibrator). I opened this thread to ask for help, and later I decided to contact @diego-ch that kindly helped me to solve, what a fkin' n00b I was  I had another error about WiFi, solved with the message by @frapeti in that thread
I made the thread for ChameleonOS, but still having problems (Camera not working, videos not working) and a day @judas1977 told me about OMX patches, so a better working build came. To say "thanks" to him, I decided to teach him on EMMC repartition and he opened the thread for codina.
Later I made ChameleonOS 4.3 for janice (test build) without any patch and @iiD4x was kinda rude with me @dagger supported me from the beginning, thanks friend. On January we became internet friends
A morning he asked me if he could add a friend on our Hangout, I answered yes and he added @Force and @Bx16 ... We became a lot of guys, including @Flo0008 @wmfaiz @rol525 @vickyushu @Sachinist, I decided to teach them about Android development and compile from sources. Later we decided to invite @Rox in that Hangout
@Rox, me, @iiD4x and @teddytsen were in TeamNova to join all our individual ROMs and dominate S Advance section against someone... Try to guess who he is NF
So BeanStalk 4.4, LiquidSmooth 4.3, LiquidSmooth 4.4, Mahdi 4.4, MoKee 4.3, MoKee 4.4, PAC-Man 4.4, ParanoidAndroid 3.99 became one.
A day of February (2014) @Rox asked me if I wanted to join Team Canjica (a dream for me!!) as OmniROM developer and maintainer, obviously and faster than a rocket I answered "YES"
Time has passed, I sold my janice on the end of April and from July I own a Galaxy S4 GT-I9505.
I'm still here, friends
EDIT: Oh, I forgot.... Always use MaxiCM, the best ROM ever. True "BlaBlaBla" Hangout's guys??

Previously i was just Nokia user fan only finally after marriage i handed over my c6 01 to my wife as a gift and bought this pice of crap having gingerbread as os in 23k when released just because of Android hype in that period without knowing what is Android because my previous c6 01 is so small and symbian is too bad that i surfed net very few times
At play store i found som root app saying about root privileges then searched for rooting over net and found its drawback like bricking so thought never want to take this risk
Then sammy finally relesed jb i was so happy but it was so laggy
But curiosity about rooting take me to xda s advance forum while surfing every day got Shaan root method rooted my phone
My first mod after rooting is beats audio from play store
Then jorny of custom roms started
Flashed ikasters cynilla
Used it for long time waited for daily cm 10.1 by diego ch
After that evolution was happened and we got 10.2 /11 Great developers
In that journey i myself tried to be developer by porting rom but then i thought its require lot patience, lot of internet to download large data, lot of technical knowledge with risk of bricking so leaved that thought
Now i am happy with LS KK but still searching for new development everyday till my phone will get silent its last day and i will bought new goodie to play again the

I did not tell my XDA story.
I created my account before I bought Android phone, I had some Symbian before. I was pretty quiet until I started helping Varun with testing of JetMod. Then I started with helping people to solve some problems with installations of it. But I never did any major development stuff. I think that I can call myself lazy or something like that, I know a lot of things for about 50%-70% (not just about Android - web development, film making, video editing, design, system administration, (I even painted my future apartment by myself, almost perfect ) etc, etc) , and I get stuck. Bang, loss of motivation and inspiration. So I did not advance in Android development, I left on helping users with some basic to medium problems.
Hey guys how are you all? Its been a long time since the hangout grup became dead :/
Hi everyone, long time viewer first time caller, just created an account today, is it okay to revive this dead thread?
I started lurking on xda at the same moment I got my Janice, my first Android. When it started going on my nerves with Jelly Bean I got into flashing, kept it kicking for almost 3 years. Amazing work on this forum, people keeping this device alive despite it being so awful. Never got into development myself, but I learned a lot about how Android works, and chose my next phone a lot more carefully. Now I got a Moto G which hopefully I won't have to root and reflash just to have a normal, functioning device, but if the need ever arises I now know how to do it
Mine one is a simple story. I wanted to use all the features of Lucky Patcher. When I saw that I was limited by root access. I didn't understand what root was. So I searched the net. There I learnt what was root - its advantages and drawbacks, and much more. Then I searched how I could root my J500F. There came websites but none had so clear instructions as in XDA. I flashed the file. Root worked nicely for some days. And it was when I got stuck in FRP lock. XDA was my first source where I searched for help. I got a quick line which quoted that I needed to flash my stock image through ODIN. I did.
Fortunately, no data was touched. My phone was restored to normal but my root was lost. I again flashed the file and took necessary precautions to prevent FRP Lock. I learnt more about Android, kernels, SU, custom recovery, ROM, mods and tweaks with root in the subsequent days. Finally, some more months later, I signed up in XDA and here I am now.
