[Q] Camera quality on non-stock - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys
I have a OnePlus inbound and asked myself this: Users of about every single device from every single manufacturer have to make due with a worsened camera quality experience when moving away from stock ROMs to AOSP-based or vanilla Android builds. This is usually due to closed-source implementation of proprietary camera features which can only be enabled or accessed when using the stock camera app on a stock ROM etc and holds true for Sony, Samsung, LG and probably many more. Even Nexus-devices under certain circumstances. Usually caused by post-processing and image enhancement mechanisms to go haywire and (native/hardware) HDR being absent, resulting in much worsened image quality when taking pictures.
Is the OnePlus One also affected? When moving away from CM11S to AOSP, CM11, CM12 or ParanoidAndroid, will the camera experience be worse or are the OnePlus camera features documented well enough, so that custom ROMs can maintain the stock camera quality?
Thanks for answers.

You can use the CM11S camera on any ROM for this device.

No decline in quality when switching back and forth between whatever ROM fits this device then.
Good to head and thanks for answering.

[Q] Good camera on G3 w/ AOSP

Sorry for the noob question but I'm trying to decide to keep the G3 or trade for OnePlus One. Taking good photos is important to me and I'd like to be able to do things like slow motion. 4k is not that important. I know some are using the moto camera but having trouble with video (which is also important to me). I'd really rather stay with a CM style OS if possible
So keep the G3 and run stock or trade for OnePlus?
If you want a great camera on AOSP, you might as well ditch the G3. You could still take pretty good pictures in good conditions, but will have problems in low light, high contrast, and anything requiring fine details.
You can't take advantage of the G3 camera's processing and hardware on anything but stock-based ROMs. People will tell you the M9 camera port is as good as stock, but they're not photographers with any sort of discerning eye. There's no comparison. No camera apps can match what's possible on a stock-based ROM.
That being said, the OPO camera isn't that great. It would be silly to trade to that phone for the camera IMO.
Some stock-based ROMs for the G3 are getting closer to AOSP-style. The latest Cloudy build is pretty good, and there are a few theme options. You just have to choose what sort of trade-off you want --
+ smoother AOSP ROM with crappy camera, or
+ decent ROM with great camera
I'd go for the latter, but I'm a photographer and bought the G3 for its camera.
Thanks for the feedback. I've tried some ROMS though I have not tried Cloudy. I'm not a photographer and my eye is not that discerning.

Mi4C vs SGS4 camera only

Hi,
How would you compare camera in Mi4c vs Galaxy s4 ? Is there any one who moved from s4 to Mi4c ? I have browsed all pages with pictures and comparison tools however cannot find real user experience. I am currently using sgs4 and camera is enough for me, however with new phone I would like to get a bit more Will I get it with Mi4C ?
Thanks
If I were in your place, I'd wait for mi5. S4 ain't a bad device
The only thing i liked about the S4 was the screen. The camera takes blurry shots 4/5 times and it lagged to no end. The Mi4c is worlds above it.
I had i9505 2 months ago I sold It and bought mi4c I think mi4c has a better camera as compared to s4 and if we talk about features of camera mi4c has awesome manual mode which s4 lacks
I agree with ermacwins. You should wait a little for mi5
hey, as far as camera is concerned the mi4c is miles ahead of the s4 (and it should be, actually, it's a flagship two years ahead !) i wasn't a sg4 owner but i have used it a lot and i'm also a previous xperia z owner (both share the same imx135 sensor) and i can safely suggest the mi4c as a camera update over the sg4. however if you are very interested in night photography mi4/mi note will suit you better (and of course mi5).
mi4c's imx258 is way ahead of s4, IMO the worst thing about mi4c's camera is the MIUI camera app itself - you've got plenty of options, but in worse light conditions it ruins 9 of 10 taken photos - a much simpler google camera takes much better pictures as it uses better exposure parameters and doesn't try to wipe out the higher ISO noise along with all the detail left
and yes, wait for the mi5 to appear - the mi4c price will drop making it even better buy
Hi, I come from a family of S4 owners but used a LG G2 instead.
The Mi4C takes much better pictures than the S4 (main reason being its fast PDAF focus). The processing is mature, it capures much more light in the same conditions as well and shutter lag is much less. Like the other people here, I advise you to wait for the Mi 5 release, but here are some pictures I took with my Mi 4c:

I remember reading your comments on the xda portal camera related on cm roms. If you havent tried cm13, try it now because it has a new snapdragon camera and it rivals the miui stock camera.

actually the miui app has proper manual controls and the g. camera has not. but yes, in auto mode your night shots come out both blurry and full of noise. (who makes the software? the camera picks 1/12 s.s. and 3000 iso ! tons of noise and shake too ! )

I'm on Team Superluminal's CM13. I'll definitely look into it. The stock camera of CM13 is horrible, it doesn't even support PDAF. At the moment I have to restore a MiUI build when I know I'm going to spend the day taking pictures, and revert back to CM13 afterwards. Thank you for letting me know, camera quality is the one thing that bugs me on AOSP.

Are you on the latest build because it was added with the ROM. I'm on a older build and had to flash the camera. There was some flickering but apparently fixed.

Snap Camera vs stock camera

I have been trying out Snap Camera to see if it's better then the stock camera. So far I'm a bit disappointed. HDR mode is slower and it can't even focus right. I tried multiple times to take a picture outdoors of my cat with Snap Camera on HDR and it was out of focus every time even though i touched to focus. Using the stock camera on the first try came out perfect. Does anyone else use this camera app and what settings did you use to work good with the Galaxy S7? And what custom HDR settings are good for this phone? I tried using the Samsung setting in the options and also the Camera 2 setting. I've never had good luck or was comfortable with 3rd party camera software in the past. It always seems like the stock camera apps are better and more integrated with the phones. thanks.
anyone?

Not really, mainly the same experience that in the end nothing beats the stock camera... Tried a few in the past, but somehow always go back to stock. Not so much that the quality is worse, mainly usability or possibilities...

I know. I just tried A Better Camera and just when I thought I liked it panaramic mode failed to work properly every time. I don't know why 3rd party cameras don't work good on these phones. I was trying to see if I would like any in case I needed more control if I get a Pixel.
stock camera is the best
i have tried almost all available camera apps.
but i keep coming back to stock camera app for quality.
I guess its best tuned for the hardware

Correct. There's a lot of fancy stuff going on in the stock camera; They have all kinds of FPGA binary images and different scene modes (e.g. night, sport, ... ) all fitted to the hardware.

camera in AOSP

I've recently bought s7 (G930F) off eBay (upgrade from s4), flashed LineageOS and was shocked with poor camera performance vs stock TouchWiz one. I've tried some cameras from Play with no improvement, ended up flashing HTC Camera replacement floating around but it's got 2 issues as far as I can tell: can't use my sdxc card and its quality is still subpar to stock. I've been running AOSP on my devices for a long time so it's not the app - itcs the resulting images that are very grainy and blury.
Any advise/ideas on how to address camera issues on s7 in AOSP?
You have to use the stock camera app & touchwiz ROM for full camera quality, the drivers and framework required to drive the camera properly are only in the stock camera app which only runs on TouchWiz ROMs
You will never get full quality on AOSP ROMs no matter which camera app you use, it must be the stock Samsung camera app

Camera quality on Custom ROMs

Hi!
In your experience, If I install a custom rom, does the quality of pictures taken is gonna be affected?
Have you experience issues using the modules for longer exposure time? (Px camera)
Thanks!
