[Q] Changing in-call/phone app - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been using a Galaxy S3 for the last 3 years. I was happy with it but decided to upgrade to the One plus One.
I really don't like the default kitkat phone app. I don't like the contacts or the in-call screen. The buttons on the in-call app are too small. I really like the Galaxy s3 phone app and contacts app.
Is there anything that I can do to change the default apps? I installed GO SMS, and I really like it. I like the contacts part of that app too. I've tried RocketDial but I don't like the dialer app and the in-call screen is the default kitkat screen.
Could someone please help me with this??

All you can do is keep testing dialer apps until you find one you like.

I've tried two dialer apps and neither of them changed the in-call screen. Any suggestions??

You can't change the in-call screen. This is what Android actually looks like, you're used to a skinned version of it.

How can I skin that screen? Does anyone have any tutorials on that. I'm not opposed to designing something myself if I could learn how to do it?
I just really hate the default in-call screen. The buttons are too close together and too small at the bottom.

I'm trying exDialer, it's not bad.

You would have to rip the apks apart and redo them from the ground up. Not an easy job at all and still very limited

[Q] Use an image for background in mms.apk?

I'm wondering if it's possible to change the background in the messaging to app to maybe the home screens wallpaper or any image really. I looked in the mms.apk and didn't see anything about a background. If anyone has any idea how to do this that is great, but if there is a lot coding involved I'm fine without it. I'm not good at that stuff.

[Q] Some annoying issues regarding the phone.

Hey,
I just got my myTouch 4G Slide, and I have a few annoying issues. It could be due to the fact that I bought it in China (it even has some apps with Chinese names).
I don't like the "genius" button - I won't use that, and it doesn't work whatsoever. Is there a way to replace its function with, say, search button (like I had on my previous Android phone)?
Music: firstly, I don't even have a music application - I have to open it with the File Explorer (so I can't multitask). Could be because it's Chinese. The main problem is that the music is played from the speaker in the back of the phone. I like to sometimes listen to music without earphones. Is it possible to play music from the same speaker I use to talk?
When I scroll the applications menu, it "jumps" rather than scrolls smoothly - kinda like the difference between scrolling with the mouse wheel, and hitting "Page Down". Is it also a Chinese issue?
Pictures: so far I'm loving the camera. The only issue is that the pictures it produces are named IMG001, IMG002 and so on. That's really annoying. Is it possible to have the pictures named like on my previous phone, which was simply the time it was taken (yyyy-mm-dd hh-mm-ss)?
Thanks a lot for all helpers!

The music icon in the app drawer is one of the apps hidden by Rosie (Sense Launcher). /system/customize/MNS/default.xml has the hidden app list in it.
I don't know if it's possibly to play music through the front-facing speaker at this time, though there's no reason why it can't be. A fun project for someone.

Yea, that's the way it's supposed to be. I don't like it either. You have to edit the Sense launcher directly to change it.
I just spent all day digging around in a decompiled Rosie.apk (Sense launcher) pulling out Kidzone by it's teeth. I've been fixing that kind of stuff since before the sun came up today, funny you should post those questions.

Dunno about this one. I don't think it's a native option, but don't see why it couldn't be written in after the fact.
Thanks for the reply.
Firstly I think we can be sure all the things I posted in OP are solvable - simply because (I think) Android is a Turing-complete machine
As for the "genius" key, I suppose it requires root etc.? Well I guess I would have to root it sometime
For music, how do I un-hide it, then? It really makes no sense to hide such a basic application!
I hope you'll keep me and the rest of the forum updated with the other stuff mentioned. Best of luck!
Have a nice weekend,
Ron.
Can't you get google music from the market? If not, download a room, pull the apk and install it. And this phone is much much much much better rooted. Thanks six btw, enjoying the rom.

The music icon is in the media room icon, along with video player, slacker radio and a couple other items. It took me a while to find it when I got my phone last month.

You have to... i dunno wut da fuhhh T Mo did with this "OS Overlay?"
So, are there any available solutions to the presented problems (except for the first one)?
In addition, I think that when I firstly got the phone and got a call, I got two circles (accept/reject), which I had to drag to a ring (a bit similar to the lock screen). Now it just gives me the standard accept-reject buttons. I couldn't find anything about it in the settings - what have gone wrong?
I believe the answering screen alters depending on whether your screen was locked, or unlocked, at the moment you received your call. Correct me if I'm wrong...
Anyone knows why they removed the Stocks app? Or it is hidden? If hidden how to enable it?

How did you root it and what did you install in it?
I'm just a bit scared of doing that.

[Q] Change the initial screen of the default dialer

Hi all,
I am using the stock dialer on the stock ROM of my Verizon Galaxy S3. I'm pretty happy with the phone and haven't yet had a need to flash it.
There is one thing that drives me crazy. The default screen of the dialer is the Keypad. I would like the default screen to be "Recent" or even "Favorites".
Does anyone know how to accomplish this?
Many thanks in advance!! All best, Ogún Niké
This therad might help you - it would create a new shortcut which you could use in place of the phone shortcut.

Question From Pixel 4a to Flip 3 - Getting Google Back

Hi guys, and thank you for all of the informative posts in this forum. I recently traded my 4a for a Flip 3, and find myself really missing so many elements of the pure Android 11 experience. Any advice on how to get a little functionality back?
- Multitasking pane behavior: the window switcher button automatically flips to the previous app instead of just bringing up the app tray. Additionally, my beloved Screenshot and Select tray buttons are gone - I just started getting used to using the picture copy functionality.
- Dialer: I installed the Google Phone app and have it set as my default calling app, but incoming calls still don't have the Decline / Screen / Accept red/blue/green buttons.
- Settings shade menu: I'd like the brightness control to appear at the very top of the pulldown. Really, I just want stock Android everywhere.
- App tray: flick up to get to your apps, but then have to flick sideways to page through them? Ridiculous.
Any advice would be appreciated. I hate the idea of bloating my phone with a ton of apps to customize the experience, but it seems like there's no way to run a stock Android launcher in place of OneUI.
You could try Good Lock on Galaxy store.

Only works on Pixel phones: exclusive feature.
Don't want to come across as a jack ass but sounds like you need to switch back to pixel phones. Or like one other person said try good luck from Samsung store.

Give some of the Samsung features a try. You are talking the difference of a single click to return to the previous app and there are only about 10 ways to take a screenshot, ranging from gestures to keys.

There are 1000 custom apps for this stuff, but you only need one of each. Once you find ones you are satisfied with, it's not incredibly hard to hide the stock ones away and forget they exist

Pull down your notification bar. Now pull it down all the way. Hit the three dots in the upper right. Click quick panel layout. Slide the option to do this to the enabled state.

If you want a truly stock experience, unlock the bootloader and build a generic version. Samsung hands you all the tools and instructions.
As for advice, I suggest actually trying the phone before trying to make it a Pixel. It isn't. It never will be. If you prefer Pixel, stick with Pixel.

Question Why does Google Messages look so different on the S22?

I have a P6P and Messages looks different firstly with the search bar being all the way at the top and not in the middle of the page and I cannot find some settings that are in Googles Messenger. Specifically, I am trying to change the notification sound to something other than the default sound, so I can know whether I got a text or an email without looking at the phone.
Anyone have ideas?
Samsung has a custom version of Google Messages that adheres to OneUI design guidelines, the goal being to make the elements at the top easier to reach with one hand by default. You should be able to get the other app by installing the APK manually, but I'm not sure if that will work with Google Messages now being a system app.
I know it stinks but in messages you can go into each contact to change the notification sound. I did about 30 and it didn't take too long.
open a contact and hit the 3 dots
hit details
hit notifications
hit sound
I think the worst part is the teal message bubble color and it not respecting the Samsung theme colors.

Go to settings, apps, messages, notifications, notification categories. Pick incoming or whatever and you can pick a sound for the whole app. I literally just found this myself. I'm also coming from a P6P. Sammy definitely made this way harder than it needed to be.

Thanks - it worked for me too
I was able to replace it with the normal version of Messages that I downloaded from apkmirror, but I had to uninstall the updates from the playstore first. Otherwise it detected I was trying to install the same version and wouldn't install.
It was great as I finally had iphone reactions. However, the playstore updated it back to the Samsung version. Ugh. Small differences but I hate the sammy version and once again lost iphone reactions.
