Need to control my Nexus 5 from ADB, the screen is not working - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi XDA, long story short:
my Nexus 5 broke this morning. The power button stopped responding and the phone entered in a boot loop. This problem has been plaguing the N5 for months. I took it to repair and they fixed the button, but they shorted the board and the screen is not showing anything, neither responding to any input. -- At least they comped the repair (ಠ_ಠ) --
I can't send it to Google because it has been opened, it was rooted, and I have critical information on the phone that they will delete. Also, my warranty has expired, so there's that.
This info is proof against my last employer for wrongful termination. I received it minutes before having the problem and didn't have the chance to back it up.
The phone is working, I can hear it receiving e-mails and texts. What I need is to be able to see the screen and control it through my Mac so I can log into Titanium and upload a backup. I figured the easiest way would be through ADB, but I'm not a developer, I'm practically an ignorant tech-wise and I don't want to f*ck it up.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot.

Suddenly I'm going extremely slowly... Help!

Ok, so far I've dumped the ROM and uploaded the kaiser-HardSPL and all was going lovely. However, after most of a day of pretty much inactivity I find the device suddenly goes very slowly. By which, I mean it can take several seconds to draw the screen.
Thinking this might be a rogue application using up all the processor cycles, I poked it up the bottom with the stick. (While doing this the first time, I held in power and camera just to see the boot loader text, but then I did it again with no buttons held.) It's a Vodafone device but it sat on the Vodafone splash screen for about 2-3 minutes then spent longer than that on the Windows Mobile screen before eventually dropping me into normality.
Except it's incredibly slow normality - I clicked on "start" and after a minute, it's not done anything yet.
Next step is a hard reset unless anyone has any better suggestion?
Help!
I assume you've pulled the battery?
Never assume anything... The full answer is, "No, but I have now"... I'm not sure that's going to do anything more than a soft (poke up the bottom) reset though. I'm now just waiting for the splash screen to subside while I'm typing this.
Having left it half an hour, while it went into standby and after noticing that the clock had stopped updating, I'm of the opinion that the already slow device has got slower...
Ok between 1 and 2 minutes to move from the splash screen to the "Windows Mobile" screen.
Now there's a turn up... After a further minute or so, I get a message, which has now cleared and gone back to the "Windows Mobile" screen before I had chance to copy it here. Basically it said that it had failed to boot either because I'd turned it off improperly or I'd installed something that it was opposed to. I should press send (I guess the green button) to reset to manufacturer's defaults.
Since that's my next stage anyway, I'll re-poke it with the pointy stick and press 'send' when it pops the message up. I'll put my trusty old Nokia N73 into flight mode and take a picture of the message so I can transcribe it here for everyone's amusement.
More news as it breaks.
I've now hit the 'send' button so it's doing a hard-reset. Meanwhile, here's the text it showed me:
Code:
The device is unable to boot be-
cause either you have turned off
the device incorrectly or tried to
install an application from untrusted
source. Press SEND to reset your
device or press any other button
to cancel. This operation will delete
all your personal data and restore
the device to its factory default
settings.
Nice. Ok, I'm at the 'tap the screen to set up your device' screen now.
Wonder what triggered all that nonsense then...
If you're like the rest of us and tooling around the all the fun programs in this forum, there's no telling.
I tell folks on computers, "Every piece of software you put on a machine is a liability to the operation of that machine." We can say that applies to this nifty little devices too.
I've had my phone experience the same symptoms you have posted here. Luckly for me a battery pull fixed mine. Sounds like the luck didn't spread much. Sorry.
Keep at it though. And don't fret the crashes. They do happen from time to time when you play hard.
So, a hard reset and a restore of a backup (Yes, I made a backup a few days ago even though I've been in the trade 20 years!) later, I'm back to normality. All I've done that's weird is install pof's loader and I can't see that's anything to do with it. What I was doing at the time of the slowdown was trying to connect to the wifi network at work. I thought the networking had just got itself tied in knots somehow but as the machine was even mega slow to boot, I can't really see that. At least I can still get back to square one at the moment.
I just need to create a .nbh out of the rom parts I dumped yesterday so that I can recover from anything more major...
Meanwhile, if you do a 'boot loader reset', would you expect it to say 'serial' if the USB isn't plugged in?
I'm starting to wonder if there is a major bug in the WiFi of the Tilt. There are some other threads on AT&T's site about this, and my work with WiFi on this unit has been dicey. Hmmmmm...

[Q] Galaxy Nexus Boot Loop (stock)

I have an unlocked HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus imported from the UK to the US. Ordered from Negri Electronics.
It's not rooted or modded in any way.. Mainly because I don't know how to. As far as I know, it's running stock ICS.
I was using it normally, (using the fb messenger app if it makes any difference) when it suddenly rebooted by itself. The Google logo comes up, then the start up animation, and sometimes the home screen will appear but is not touch sensitive (i cannot slide it to unlock), and then it 'hangs' and the screen goes black. Repeat.
I've tried to fix this by myself and there's a video on youtube (sorry, noob here. can't post links. video is by robbidwv and title is "my galaxy nexus won't boot..") of the same problem that I have, but the posted solution doesn't work for me.
So far, I have entered Coin Mode and pressed Start. Entered Fastboot mode and gone into Recovery Mode (no options appear after that. it just starts booting up and the loop begins), and I've also tried Restart Bootloader.
I've almost given up. Now all I want is to extract my SMS, if they're still on my phone. I can't access the folders on my computer because it won't boot up and connect. Is there a way that I can extract my SMS by using DOS in either Coin Mode or Fastboot mode?
Or even better, does anyone have a solution to this boot loop problem? I'll contact Negri Electronics tomorrow and hopefully they can send me a replacement.
Please help!! Thanks
that problem just started happening with me an hour ago!!
i hate this!!
we need a solution please!
Hey guys, sorry about the issue.the major problem I see here is you wanting to retrieve your txt messages, which might be possible with a little Modding, but if yourwilling to lose them to get a working phone back, then this is what your going to have to do. Make sure your phone is completely off. Hold the 2 volume buttons and the power button together. You will get into a mode with an android Guy. Press the volume button up or down until it says reboot recovery at the top. Press the power button. It will rebootand come to a screen with an android. Hold volume up,down and power at the same time. A menu will come up. Go down to wipe data. Click it, and after it is done reboot. Your phone should work now.
If this helped you, or you simply appreciate me taking the time to write this out then please press the thanks button
Hey!
Thanks. Yeah I 'fixed' it already. I was just about to post something similar. After a while I just gave up on trying to recover my data. Good thing that Google syncs everything so the only issue would be recovering my messages, which I decided weren't worth sending it in for a repair which would probably not be able to recover anything anyway.
The thing I didn't know about was to press power + volume up WHILE on the recovery screen. I thought navigating to the recovery screen was it!
Still, this kind of sucks. I love my GNex, but I can't help but be slightly pissed seeing that my crappy iPhone 3GS never did this in the 2 years I had it. Oh well, hope it doesn't happen again!
hey guys! i also did a complete wipe on my phone and got it working again!
but i wonder why this happened in the first place?
last application i installed before the crash was double twist, i dunno why but i feel that it was the reason behind the boot loop!
Sorry for reviving this thread, but I just had this happen to me TWICE!
It happened to me first last Monday, the 23rd - the phone crashed when trying to send an email with an attachment - and went into a boot loop - Google logo would appear, no make it to the animation, and reboot....
I performed a full reset and things worked again. I didn't install all the apps I had before - figuring it must have been due to some app messing with the OS.
Well, it happened again to me yesterday! I was connecting to my bluetooth headset when the phone crashed and went into the boot loop. Full reset worked again, and I've installed even fewer apps - essentially only those that I use on a daily basis.
My phone is still on 4.0.1 and I'm hoping once 4.0.4 is pushed this may get resolved? I have a canadian GNex from Negri. I will call them again (I called the first time, but when the full reset worked I never contacted them again).
I would like to this this is a software issues, and not hardware.
I have the same problem. If you figure it out let me know.
Today my phone also entered a boot loop: [Google logo]->[black screen]->[vibration]->[Repeat]
I tried Recovery Mode, but this is what happens: (sorry for the link but I am not trusted with powerful tools such as outside links apparently, as I have not yet reached the maturity of a person with eight posts... )
dl(dot)dropbox(dot)com/u/53568097/Android.jpg
This is what I see when I navigate to Recovery Mode
For a split second I can see an image of an Android with spinning cogs in his innards, but then this little sad fellow appears. WTF is this?
EDIT:
Oh, and I'm running Android stock 4.0.2, never rooted or unlocked, Swedish. At the time when the phone started doing this, I was using Endomondo, and was about to set off on my bike when it died on me.
Stock ROM galaxy nexus bootlooping after wiping data also.
Hi,
My GNex went into a bootloop so i searched xda and found that factory reseting would be helping my prob. But after wiping the data also its still in going through the loop . Please help .:crying:

[Q] Nexus 5 Black Screen - Urgent

Hi Guys,
Tried switching SIM cards on my Nexus 5 after getting back from holiday, only to find that the screen now never turns on. I can see the phone listed on windows (not ADB) and it vibrates to power buttons etc. My urgent question is, is there ANY way to recover the data from my phone at all?
This is urgent due to me having to send this thing back to Google by tomorrow for a replacement.
Cheers,
David
Have you tried forcing a reboot by holding down the power button for 10-15 seconds?
And thankfully, it turned out that the phone is working fine apart from the screen, remembered where to tap my PIN code and all is well with the world again. Thank GOODNESS. I know you guys would do your best to help anyway
Just out of interest, has anyone else had this issue before?

com.android.systemui problem

Hi,
I've searched through the forums for this problem, but didn't see anything to help - sorry if I am repeating something I have missed.
The problem I'm having is I keep getting the "Unfortunately, the process com.android.systemui has stopped." error message when I try to restart my phone (it was not plugged in overnight and this morning my screen was a red triangle with an exclamation point in it). I took it to the ATT device support center near me and she couldn't figure it out so then I came home and got on with an HTC tech support. Tech support had me wipe the cache in the android screen (think I held the down volume key while pressing the power button once) as well as trying to reboot and doing a factory reinstall. However, nothing has worked and the message continually comes up, even when I shut the phone down the msg will reappear after a few seconds. Behind the systemui msg, I'm also getting a reinstall Google+ and when I click on ok on that (immediately after hitting OK on the systemui msg), it goes away but then I get a msg "Unfortunately Google+ has stopped working." and the systemui keeps showing up. It is to the point that I can even get anything else on my screen so I can't access settings, nor will it connect to the HTC Sync Manager.
I became suspect of the tech support in that immediately when she looked up my warranty and found out I was no longer covered, she wanted me to ship the phone to them to get a quote to repair it.
Sorry if I'm being such a newb, but I really don't have a clue what I'm doing so any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, there is an app on the phone that I've used for the entire year to track my business mileage and I really have no way to recreate it.
Thanks!

Recover messages from Z3 with smashed display?

Hello.
My wife dropped her Z3 earlier today for the second time in as many months! But midway through getting the screen replaced, I decided to buy her a new phone. As the repair shop had already started the job, her phone is now pretty much unusable, no display or touch function.. I've managed to reassemble it enough to get the battery light on to see that it is charging, and I can feel vibrations on the button press, and my PC detects the phone. It was totally stock, not modded at all. It had a pattern swipe lock on it.
My question is, can I get her text messages off of the phone?
Is there any way at all to access and retrieve them via USB connection?
Thank you for any help.
Hi all - I'm still trying to find a response to this. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. I have tried to fit a new display but the new display was not responsive and did not illuminate too. If I can get this to work I can release the passcode and access the phone to recover the SMSs, but so far, no luck.
