I just read a piece on Boy Genius Report in regards to the differences between the Captivate/Vibrant and the Epic. The blogger states the following
"Samsung’s TouchWiz UI doesn’t feel as mature as Sense. This seems blatantly obvious in the Captivate and Vibrant but is much less noticeable in the EPIC 4G. The device feels much faster than the Captivate or Vibrant and having social network integration, power controls, and a host of widgets actually becomes more useful instead of an annoyance."
He then proceeds to make presumptions about the ROM in the captivate/Vibrant being SD cards and the ROM inside the Epic being a much Faster NAND variant.
"We’re assuming the phone uses NAND Flash as the internal memory medium. On the Captivate if you navigate to Settings >SD Card and phones storage you see “External SD Card” and “Internal SD Card” listed. On the EPIC you see “External SD Card” and “Internal Phone storage.” We’ve reached out to Sprint for clarification and will update this article if they respond with a definitive answer."
I know the Epic isn't out yet, but does anyone have some better insight into this?

I believe that the Epic 4G does not have as much internal storage space as the captivate (or vibrant). Standard Galaxy S phones have 16 GB of internal storage, of which about 2GB is reserved for apps and the OS. I think the Galaxy S Pro (Epic 4G) has substantially less. I believe that either the engadget or gizmodo review listed the phone as having on 400MB available for app storage, suggesting less than 1GB of internal storage for OS and apps. To compensate, the Epic is sold with a 16GB micro-sd card.
I'm afraid I don't know anything about the read/write speeds for the internal storage on both devices, or if the two phones have different types of memory. But my captivate lists 3 different types of memory in it's "SD card and phone storage menu": SD, internal SD and internal phone storage. It sounds like the Epic just don't have any 'internal sd' storage capacity at all, so it only shows 'SD' and 'internal phone storage.'

You are correct about the internal storage on the Epic. Thanks for pointing out that there is indeed a third storage type on the captivate, I've never scrolled past the internal SD part of the menu.
This leads me to believe that BGR really has no clue of what theyre talking about.
I read somewhere that despite the 16gb storage in teh captive, there is only about 13gb left from the stock rom, is that correct?
a quick question, I thought if the phone comes with 16gb, you can use all of the 16 gb for apps and such, am I mistaken with this? I was under the impression that the whole 16gb is available for everything but you can also add more via SD.

Even though the phone says it's 16gb, you only get to use about 13 gig of that. You can add up to a 32gb micro SD card to it though. It's like that with most if not all phones. iPhone is done in a similar way. The OS takes up space.
YEAH, I understand that the phone OS takes up space. But the whole 13GB that's free can be used for apps and such right? WinMo are a bit different I think the ROM is for OS and apps.
I saw a few android based phone has only 1GB internal memory (Sony Xperia) which is quite low. Does that mean that the maximum number of apps you can install is 1GB? Or that you can install apps on the SD
If only Samsung would realize that rfs fails and they should use Ext4 for data storage :\

Perhaps this is why the Epic 4G boots up so quickly.
I know it has 1GB Internal storage but how much of that is used by Android/Sense and how much is left for the user?
I have seen some reports that say that the Sensation actually has 4GB internal but only 1GB is user accessible. Does this mean that the other 3GB are used for OS/Sense and the user sees the full 1GB free on first boot?

Correct. The actual amount of available memory will be approximately 1.20 GB.

What happens when the 1gb space runs out. Can I not install anymore apps? 1 gig is quite small if its only for apps.
I will be coming from an iPhone, so you can understand my memory question.

Even though the iPhone has 16/32 gigs of internal memory and all of that is technically available for apps/games, I HIGHLY doubt you are using anywhere close to a gig. Apps are VERY small, shockingly. Also most games which are the biggest apps you can get on Andriod install all the extras on your SD card and never make a footprint on the internal memory. Basically what I mean by this is, if you use 1 GIG for apps... you sir have WAY to many apps lol. I have about 70 apps (not including system apps) and I am only using 578MB of my 1.2 GB interal memory. Most of those apps I could easily uninstal as I seldom use them, but I dont feel like it lol
I have about 8 gigs worth of apps/games on my 16gb iPhone 4. Quite a few of the decent arcade games are about 400mb.
I dont think I have too many apps on my iPhone and I would of thought most iPhone users have much more than 1gb worth of apps on their phones. You can never have too many apps

All I can say to that is damn... that is a lot of freaking apps. I have what I feel is well more then enough games and apps on my phone and haven't hit a gig. I should ask my cousin how much he has on his iPhone. I could never have that much stuff on my phone. And yes you can install 90% of apps on your SD card as well so you should be fine if you do hit your 1 GIG. Mostly widgets are the only thing that can not be installed on the SD card
Well thats good to know. At least I wont be worrying so much about running out of memory.
I don't play with half of my apps regularly, but it's good to know that they are there if I get bored

Having an iPad and an iPod I can understand your thinking. But with android even the big apps store their data ie game sounds etc on the sd card and the initial app is really small. There is a thing called apps to sd where you can choose to have the apps on the sd. Also as long as the sensation gets rooted at some point correct me if I'm wrong but you should have no problem filling your sd card with whatever apps you want as google have opened the file size restrictions for apps for developers.
The HTC One X has 16GB of storage total, but only about 2GB can be used for apps. I don't get it, its all internal memory, why separate it like that? Or is it just similar to my current Android phone where i have 2 separate storage areas, a small amount of phone memory, and SD Card. Should i think of the One X as having phone memory and a built in SD card so to speak. Because on my current phone i can move some apps from phone memory to SD card in Android Settings based off how they work, and some need to stay on the phone. Would this be a similar way that it may work on the One X?

the 10gb partition is basically an sdcard yes. 2gb of app storage is actually a lot. if an app needs extra data, it's saved to the internal memory (10gb).
That's the typical configuration for almost all Android phones. You have system partition where the kernel/OS/system resides. You have app paritition where all apps install to. Then you have the SDcard type storage area where all user/app data stores to.
2GB app partition is quite large. You can also install app to SDcard if you use up all the 2GB space.

This has been covered before, but the reason HTC went this route is to have usb mass storage mode. With one big partion, such as I have on my gtab 10.1 mtp is used, usb mass storage is not an option.
And yes, moving apps to sd works, even large games where most of the data is downloaded afterwords, that data goes to your "sd". In short, the 2gb app partion is plenty.

don't mean to beat a dead horse here, but really, is 2gb enough? i'm on a t-mobile mytouch 4g slide and i might be leaving t-mobile to come to at&t and get the htc one x, but one of my biggest complaints is the storage space. i'm CONSTANTLY having to delete apps to stay above 200mb free (and i have no music on my phone and all pics are on the sd card). right now i have 102 apps/games installed. i find that if i start moving apps/games to sd i start having phone issues (and i know not to move apps that have widgets, but even still, just installing games and stuff still tends to cause freezes and force closes). now the only reason i might be able to trust you guys and take the leap of faith here with the 2gb is that i'm running android 2.3 here... i know that android 4.0 is a totally different beast and things just run amazingly better to begin with (especially with the added hardware of the one x)... so maybe i really don't need to worry about moving some of my bigger games like plants vs zombies and peggle (thats like 150mb right there on the phone storage alone) to sd on this android 4.0 device...
SO... anyone wanna help me feel a little better about this and give me some more assurance that everything is just gonna be ok haha.

One major difference here is that your T-Mo MyTouch 4G Slide needs to use the slower microSD card for SD storage. Due to the speed difference and general unreliable performance of external SD storage, it could cause issues for apps stored on those external SD cards.
For HOX, there is no external SD card involved. The 10 GB or so storage you can use is from the same NAND chip that is used by the internal 2GB app storage. So, there shouldn't be any problem for moving apps to that storage.

interesting. sounds pretty reasonable. i don't really store any music on my phone other than a few spotify offline playlists, and no movies, so the space would be totally pictures, apps and games... so if what you're saying is true, i guess i shouldn't really worry about the 2gb... gonna go play with one in a store tomorrow to make sure i'll be happy jumping from 3.7 to 4.7" but i think this might be a done deal for me ...

No it is not the typical configuration for all Android phones, not after ICS. After ICS I think HTC is the only one who insist on sticking to it. Even though MTP have its pro and cons, I think sticking to the old 2 GB partition has more Cons than Pros.
And while 2GB is enough for many users, for many others, it is NOT enough. FYI not all apps can be moved to SDcard and right now I have almost 4 GB on apps on my tablet. So for a heavy user, 2GB space is both restrictive AND unnecessary.
This is a stupid decision by HTC that has stopped me from buying their phone since HTC desire HD (which gave me such an headache due to this restriction)
Also consider the exponential growth in the file size of the apps. A few years ago, you will have hard pressed to find an apps that is more than 100 MB, now some apps even approaches 0.5 GB to 1GB size. Enough? Hardly.

I recently purchased Samsung Galaxy SII Plus. As per the site, it comes with 8GB inbuilt memory. When I received the phone, it shows only 3.9 GB total space and 3.56 GB space available. When I contacted the seller, they told me that its Android system which is occupying the remaining space. I am not aware if this is the right reason. Does anyone know about it?
It's normal... All Android OEMs lie about the storage space.
For example the HTC One S 16GB comes with 9.3GB which seems a lot more like 8GB to me.

Why is the /cache partition 1 GB though, seems a little overkill?
its almost the same for all device(my old ace says it have 512mb,when only bout 180 is available to me). There are no other internal memory stuff inside your phone,so whatever system will definitely eat some of your internal memory.Even laptop manufacturer are the same(320gb only 280 available),what u expect them to say? On a new device with Android 4.x and QHD/HD display, how much internal memory is needed? Most Apps that can be moved to SD would be moved, just talking about essential/useful apps that can't be moved. I know that the system tends to take 1-2 GB of listed memory, such as from 8 GB internal I get to use only about 6GB or so...

i think i heard that the stock rom on a htc one and s4 (google play editions) roms are around 400mb but the cyangenmod roms made for them is only 200mb (i may be wrong please correct me if im wrong) it also depends on how much apps the rom has on it. the galaxy s2 stock rom comes with big gameloft games so it was most likely around 2gigs maybe even more.
