[Q] Recovery partition - Microsoft Surface

Surface RT, 32 GB, Win 8.1 RT
I have only 2 weeks of Windows RT experience. I use Windows for over 10 years.
2 weeks ago, I received my surface rt and after setting it up and running, I created a recovery USB drive. Then I proceeded to remove the recovery partition because of my concern of inadequate disk space.. At least that is what I thought I did.
Yesterday, I ran a diskmgmt and it show a recovery partition of 350 MB, and healthy.
Does that 350 MB sound right ?
If yes, do I take it that I have not removed the partition after all ?
I would like to include a screenshot, but the " insert image " button is unresponsive. Is it because I am a newbie ?
Thank you.

Thats ok, there are two recovery partitions, one contains the WindowsRE, which you can not remove. The second one however contains the backup OS image which is considerably bigger. You erased that backup.

Thank you.
Just to be clear....... if I want to reset the tablet back to factory state, I will have to use the Recovery USB drive, or do I just simply run the Reset option without the Recovery flash drive ?

Yes, you will need the USB drive. If you try to reset without it, your surface will prompt you for an installation medium. Oh, and in case you loose your USB drive, you can always download the recovery image from microsoft

[Q] error - Preparing Tablet storage

While trying to flash a new ROM I think I may have unplugged the USB cable with the tablet still mounted to a laptop. I now can't seem to access that storage space in any way and am in turn unable to flash any ROM. I don't like the TnT and am trying to flash a ROM without it. Any ideas how to proceed?
Thanks in advance!
does it boot up at least? may be able to factory reset and start over. or even power+VOLUMEUP to try to recovery boot.
i just put on tntlite 2.0. it's super fast. doesn't use a computer. it just strips the stock OS
It does still boot but tablet storage is not accessible. When trying to get into recovery,i get a triangle then it boots normal. Not sure what else to try. Tried mounting in windows and linux to format our repair..no luck!
sounds like the storage partition is corrupted and it crashes when it tries to read it, expecially if you unplugged the cable mid-flash (ouch!)
clockwork mod should let you reformat and partition the internal storage, goodluck, hopefully it's not a low-level problem w/ the storage data structure, ya never know if you were flashing it when it crashed, depends on what mode it was using to flash data to the disk (normal write vs low-level format equiv)
Thanks KM....just to follow up on this thread...I had to return the tab to sears....I exchanged it for a new one and have put TnT lite 2.0 on it. I'm not all that happy and plan to try zpad as it seems like a smoother and faster responding ROM.

Can't format G-Tab, nvflash does nothing, all apps and settings are still there!

Okay I am super confused. I've successfully used FORMAT utility and also nvflash restore...but the tablet won't format!!! All my apps and settings are still there when I nvflash restore it!
I ran the nvflash_gtablet.bat from the Format utility..and it looked liked it worked: at the end of the process the tablet showed the red font with the kernel mismatch and bootloader not found, or something along those lines..
Just to be safe, I did it a second time. lol
Then I used nvflash restore to restore it back to original shipping.
I noticed right away something was wrong when as soon as it booted to the tap and tap home screen, the screen started to go dim after 15 seconds (that was the screen timeout time I'd set before formatting and all that).
But I thought maybe it was a fluke, so I checked the app drawer, and all my apps are there!!!! Not only that, it connected to my password protected wifi right away!!
Can someone please help me delete the f_ck out of this thing? I want there to be NOTHING left, so I can get a clean start.
The reason I wanted to format is because, I'm having a sound issue with my gtablet (whenever entering the volume control and adjusting the volume the processes always force closes...no matter what ROM I'm on). I wipe data, try to start fresh, but the problem always occurs after a few hours of use on any ROM (even the brand new TNT 5).
And I don't know if this matters or not, I'm on Windows 7, 64 bit...but I obviously have the USB drivers working because I'm using these utilities.
Please somebody? Today is my only day off work for a long long time.
I "THINK" I remember reading that you could flash CWM and from there wipe user data, then run nvflash to get back to stock recovery. Never tried it myself & I'm new here, so take the info for what it is worth.
Don't panic....
I don't think you have anything to worry about. If you read the post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=974422), it states in rather large red letters at top :"This fully erases the ROM but this will NOT affect the internal SD card. You MUST be able to use nvflash to restore the stock firmware."
Since your apps are installed on the internal SD, that's why you see them when you reload the ROM.
Edit: If I were you, I'd run the Format and load stock, then reload Clockwork and format the internal SD. That should get you back to a rather vanilla slate.
You can also refer to the posting below as another source. If you go down to the Homebrew link found in the posting, it's is used to revert the gtab back to it's original TnT state.

format and nvflash do not erase personnal data, a full reflash of difference firmware might format your personnal data, if you want to wipe out data, use the Factory wipe in the CW menu

Thank you all for your replies. But I am a little confused still. AFAIK the apps aren't on the sd card...wouldn't I be able to see them when I mount the sd card on the computer?

What do you mean at BOOT time? and it was an external hard disk it had no OS installed on it, I am trying a recovery software right now it is scanning the hard disk now and its taking very long, I have my fingers crossed if it doesn't work I will try Spinrite,
Also does system restore, restore an external hard disk connected to the system? because last time I did a system restore a few months ago I didn't connect my hard disk and it told me that location G:/ couldn't be restored which was my hard disk.
Anyone know?
System restore won't restore anything on a formatted drive.
Hmm, I normally would recommend Recuva as it is free, but it needs the original file system to be present (aka you can't have formatted). I think [email protected] can do it, but it isn't free.
Kk I am trying a program now, its still scanning and in the files found tab I can see my files so I am gonna wait till that program is done hoping it would recover the items,

Re-Partition of an Android-System?

Hello
I bricked my Acer A200
What I did:
root and unlock with SimpleTool V2
installed CWM
Started in recovery, did full wipe
after this getting the information, that /data can not be found
restart => rien ne va plus....
after this trying with fastboot, ADB, tools like TWRP, CWM etc to get something work again
manuelly cleared and also removed files and folders with ADB
at last using Weapon ROM Installer and get flashed a ROM BUT
now my internal Card ist not fully useable - the storage information says 66MB
I can not install any apps and
the system always get aback to zero, when I do a restart
I think, I bricked the internal partition of the whole system..../data is still not usable....etc...
If you have any ideas what to do - I'll be very happy and grateful for help!
Best regards,
teacherhh
Did you make full backup? I think you have to flash mbr and replace vold.fstab (/system/etc/vold.fstab) with the original vold.fstab.
no backup

how to flash mbr?
and what can I do without vold.fstab?
normseq are
mbr.img in the backup directory (512 bytes)
or raw MBR (~over 16 kb)
Sorry, but I do not know gpt and mount options of this device. You can try the following:
1. (google translate) "How to Completely reset the tablet to factory settings
1) Turn off the tablet;
2) set the screen lock lever to the left;
3) Hold down the addition of the volume (the portion of the volume rocker, which is closer to the levers lock) power key;
4) As soon as the tablet vibrates release the power button and set the lever lock the screen from right to left until you see these 2 lines
Erasing Userdata ...
Erasing Cache ...
It should continue to hold down the volume;
5) In the upper left corner of the line will begin formatting;
6) The tablet is pristine)))"
2. format all partitions with this CWM Recovery script (all data will be deleted) (can not post outside link, leave me a message to icq 230921979)
3. install firmware with CWM for bricked device, how-to is here (the same). Good luck!

Hmmm...I am a little confused (maybe a translate issue?)
Are those the steps you did to try and fix the tab or the steps you took that broke it in the first place?
And am I correct in understanding that the tablet boots, but the problem is that your internal storage is reporting only 66mb? Is that your /system partition or simply storage, emmc?
If just emmc (which if the problem is installing apps, it sounds like it may be), at least you should be able to use symlinks to swap internal storage to an sdcard. You still lose some storage, but the tab will work.
also, I see that acer 200 supports fastboot. If you can get into fastboot you should be able to recover anything that you did. Can you get into the bootloader? Go find a factory image if so, and flash it through fastboot.
fastboot is there and can usually be a measure of last resort...
Good luck, teacher.

Thanks for the luck!
First 4 steps are the steps, that bricked the tablet.
After this I tried with the following steps to make it work again.
Yes fastboot is working and I think I nearly flashed every single image I found thru the net...
Yes, the table boots with weapon rom, then I look into "Settings"->"Storage" and finde 66MB of Storage all fully used....
SuperWipe
Just tried to make a wipe with AcerA200SuperWipe.zip
Erasing & formatting EXT4 *CACHE* and*SYSTEM* worked fine, but doing the same to *DATA* made the wipe stoped.. ((

Accidentally clicked 'FACTORY RESET' in HBOOT

I accidentally hit the FACTORY RESET option in HBOOT, and it seems the phone just rebooted into TWRP without doing anything. However it seems my SDcard is now empty and unformatted. Earlier I had two "Internal SDcard" options in TWRP\Mount but now I just have one, and if I try to click on Mount USB storage, the removable disk appears as an unformatted disk on my PC. Is there any to fix this? Is the SD gone for good or can I recover the data?
Run a Ruu and your phone should be fine again (dont forget to relock your bootloader)
I think your data you wiped is hopelessy gone..
Sent from my HTC One S using xda premium
I made a nandroid luckily, but I just realised that the problem is due to the sdcard not actually being able to mount. It says
E:unable to mount '/sdcard'
I'm using TWRP 2.5, maybe I will try with 2.3.1.0.
EDIT: Okay that didn't help. If I run a RUU won't it erase my SD card? I don't want to lose what's on there, is there any way to fix it and be able to mount it again?
Bottom line: I need the data on my SD... is there any way to recover it?

No its gone sorry and no need for ruu just flash stock recovery and factory reset again.
Ten years of data just destroyed within the blink of an eye.
FML.
reformat the sd card and use recovery tools (google for them). most of your stuff will be easily brought back from the dead.

I did. It seems everything on the card was nuked. I tried about ten different recommended apps, none of them could find a single file even with deep searches.

It easily could have been downloaded data. I'm really sorry to hear about your loss, but always keep a copy of your SD card on your PC, no matter what.

before going through the trouble of an RUU, if you can see the unformatted disk from your computer just try formatting it there into a FAT32 partition like you would any other drive. This has worked for folks successfully. But as for data recovery....
Dang that sucks... was there some sort of confirmation before starting the wipe? I've always been paranoid that I might fat finger it randomly and it just wipes without some kind of second check
Reflash the recovery img from fastboot then boot into recovery, you should be able to mount sd
Zero help to anyone, but I did exactly the same thing myself and had to mount the SD card in recovery and format.
It hurts!!
Well it's official. All my data is forever gone. And no there was no notification, I hit "FACTORY RESET", and it just paused for a second then rebooted into TWRP with my SD instantly destroyed. I tried every possible trick in the book. The problem for me wasn't just getting it to mount and work again, I could have done that in 20 seconds. The problem was to try and get it back WITH all my data, which I failed.
In the end, I made a RAW disk image backup of the sd card partition which for some bizarre reason ended up with a file that was 6 MB in size instead of 10 GB... I knew my data had somehow got nuked. I decided to just reformat it (Quick Format) as FAT32 on the PC, then I ran a host of data recovery programs, even those that were specialised in finding stuff from formatted drives. None of them could even find ONE file. But after format I was able to use it as normal.
I have really no clue how the entire drive was nuked within a fraction of a second, even all the data on it, but it is what it is.
On the bright side, for some reason my phone seems MUCH faster now, especially when installing apps, and the battery seems to last noticeably longer too.

Hmm. Maybe I should do it too lol.
You should automatically upload your photos or files somewhere. Mine upload to Dropbox so if anything bad happens, nothing too bad can go wrong.

It's hard to do recover because normal format recovery might not work but you can try the old ver of Easy Recovery Pro 6.x(I don't know why but the lastest ver seems removed RAW recovery) and use the RAW recovery, it usually could find some stuffs. You can also try out Diskgenius.
