Is there a way to change softkey assignmets?

there is. the only reason i asume so is because Handcent SMS lets you reassign search key.

Is there a way to re-calibrate them too then? I really don't like that the coordinates are set above the actual icons...

Yeah that's for sure - there are several apps doing that for themselves.. I thought there is an app letting you do that for other apps.
Anyway, would be nice if someone coded one

There's an app... called let me think... Button Shortcut... free on the market that allows you to remap (some/all?) of the long press functions.
I did exactly as above until I installed HelixLauncher2... mapped long press on search to NubDial.

Edit: ok..one can set the "search button long press" for any app.

Samsung Galaxy SIII's home button is very rough to press, long press of home button is really annoying, which makes multi tasking very tough, so I have developed this application for my personal use, hope its useful to others too.
Features:
Adds three shortcuts under 'VirtualKeys', HOME, RECENT APPS LIST, SEARCH [rooted device is required for SEARCH key functionality]
How to use:
STOCK touchwiz launcher -> Launcher -> widgets -> virtual key -> drop in desktop and select required shortcut
Why do I need HOME shortcut?
I use these shortcuts along with 'SwipePad: Hyperspace Jump' app, which lets you add shortcuts to its grid, So I can go to home/recent apps/search with just a swipe from any applications.
NOTE:
I AM NOT SURE HOW TO SIMULATE SEARCH KEY PRESS WITHOUT ROOT, PLEASE POINT OUT IF YOU KNOW ANY API.
I have designed this and tested inSGIII but should work in other devices too.

Its not a widget as he stated it a shortcut just add which ones u want like adding a widget but select short cuts instead and its there

Thanks recent apps works as mentioned on my galaxy S3... but when using home shortcut nothing happens.. it registers touch and nothing moves .. i mean doesnt go to home screen from other screens.. is there any more i need to know?

this is expected behaviour, main intention of home shortcut is to use along with other app like Swipepad so that we can jump to home from any application

which shortcut is not working, though i never tested in s2 it should work

on my sg3 (stock, non rooted) only multitask button works, home and search don't... but multitask is all I really wanted so :good:

maybe because I do not have root access? I'm using swipepad and have added the shortcuts but the home shortcut just takes you out of the application you were in and back to touchwiz, and the recent apps shortcut works only some of the time, you have to keep on retrying before it will open the recent apps.. so a FANTASTIC idea, but frustrating if it does not work all the time
..actually just noticed that if I add the shortcut to the screen for the recent apps it works every time, just not from SwypePad... curious..

Nova Launcher has this built in
I love capacitive buttons, but this one capacitive button and two soft buttons is unsettling since they require different pressures to be applied. I would have loved all capacitive buttons. But at this point, I'd rather have had all soft buttons than this mess.
Anyway, I use Nova launcher and I added both the "Recent Apps" and the "Text Search" from the "Nova Actions" to the dock. It's not as convenient as having a button on the phone since if I have an app, I first have to go to the desktop and then click on the dock button. So I also added it to the Notification Drop Down in the Notifications Toggle app.
You guys may also be aware of this, but another annoying thing was that it seemed to take longer than expected after hitting the Home Button to get to the home screen. Turns out that this was because hitting the home button twice starts the "S Voice" app and it was waiting for the second tap before showing the task list. i want to know if there any android application that allow as to use the "home" button to launche other applications (with long click or doube tap) which works with android 2+ ?

Home 2 Shortcut is what I use. It allows you to pick any app you have installed to launch when you double tap the home button.
Apparently I can't post links until i have 10 posts, which is ridiculous, but if you search it you should find a Play Store link.

I also have the exact same question

I'd also like to know how to map the recents button to menu button (same as the 3-dot button) ...

shouldn't be much longer until cm11 and other custom roms roll out with full customization functionality that allows you to remap your buttons.

If app shortcuts were selectable, then Tasker integration is not necessary. You could use a Tasker shortcut.

1. Create a task in Tasker
2. Create a shortcut in your launcher (or anywhere else where you can create shortcuts) Select Tasker's "Task Shortcut" and select the task.
So I hope some day bxActions will allow shortcuts.

You could have Tasker REMAP the button for you dependent on what app you're in, where you are, whether the phone is`locked or unlocked etc

Yes, I guess unfortunately it will be affected :
This news comes from XDA dev Flar2, who was updating his Button Mapper app for the GS8. He notes that his new Telus Galaxy S8 allowed remapping of the Bixby button with Button Mapper when he received it, but an OTA update changed the button's functionality. Now, the Bixby button's action is no longer routed through accessibility. Thus, it can't be changed without root access. I'd expect a similar OTA to hit all the other carrier variants as well.

Is this still working for everyone?
I was playing with it and one S8 had an option for flashlight toggle and the other S8 didn't.
Any idea why or how to get the flashlight toggle to show up as an option?

Still working on my TMO S8 I got today.
Edit: Button Mapper from the store has the option for flashlight toggle and it's pretty quick to turn on and off.

Is there a version available that does not have these permission items within Accessibility?

- Observe text you type - This includes personal data such as credit card numbers and passwords
This is a no-way warning for me...

Any app that is used as an accessibility service on a phone auto requires these permissions. The bixby button action is only available through the accessibility service at this point, so there will be no solution that does not require this. Maybe if this or some other app was open sourced people would be more likely to approve of this
