General information about flashing unknown devices - General Questions and Answers

Hey, I wonder if someone can give me some detailed information about what is important when flashing some unknown devices. I've read one important thing is the CPU has to fit to the ROM. So after some research I found for example cm11 for allwinner A31 CPUs. however I'm a little confused . is is really that simple to have a fitting cpu or do I have to think about other stuff as well? And how is it with cwm? Can I flash any cwm or does it also has to be a specific one?
It'd be nice if someone could point out the most important stuff or maybe give me a beginner friendly link, cause I didn't find something what makes everything clear to me.

You cannot flash ROM just by only checking CPU. Each ROM is device specific and must not be flashed on another device. It will probably brick your device.
Here is a guide about flashing ROM in general.

Well actually I thought so, I'm used to it cause of my galaxy s2. I just wonder how it works with Roms for unknown devices cause often the ROM isn't made for specific devices.
Looking at this site for example:
http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/874...inner-a31-by-christiantroy-update-2013-11-30/
It looks for me as if I could flash it but I know there is more than CPU so I'm confused. In another forum (something with China devices) I also read it's possible not flash stuff not belonging exactly to ur device. Trick would be to take care for some specific specs.
Well idk. Actually I wouldn't even search for something like that if my stock system wouldn't be so buggy

Okay. But I don't think you can flash ROM even searching something common between two devices. Because there's more to it then just those similarities. Because sometimes even variants of the same mobile phone does need some changes in the ROM to work properly.

[Q] Is there any way to improve the accelerometer in a phone?

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum.
I was wondering if it's possible to increase the accelerometer speed in a phone? I have a Huawei u8100 from Wind Mobile in Canada.
Specs are:
Android 2.1 (as far as I know it is not upgradable to 2.2.)
clock speed of 528 MHz
I find the rotation on the phone to be quite slow compared to other models. Is there anything I can do to improve that? Just an fyi, I've never rooted a phone before and have no clue how to do it but I'm willing to learn if that's what it would take.
Thanks a lot
Welcome to forums
On my experience cooked ROM´s made by great Chefs @ XDA have always presented much better ROM´s than the "original" ones, so I would try to root my device and try any of them (not sure if your device is covered in here)
Also you can see if there is any over clocking tool for your model.
Good luck,
I think that comes inbuilt and cant be changed, but hey i coudl be wrong

Your device is not covered in XDA sadly
Ahh ok, thanks anyway.
Does anyone know if changing the ROM would even help, assuming I was able to find a new ROM on another site? Or is it a hardware issue and not something I can improve?
Thanks!

[Q] How to check custom ROM compatibility?

How can I check if a custom ROM is compatible with my phone?
Is it only compatible on a certain phone?
I have a Cherry Mobile Burst, And sadly I can't find a custom ROM for my unit. So I'm asking if there are other custom ROM that I can use??
Thanks!!! :crying:
The only real way is to make sure it specifically states that it IS for your device. If you cannot find one for your device, then you can try to develop one. Even the identical chipset will have different hardware that make the ROMs incompatible.
If it does not say "This ROM is for XXX device" then don't flash it, that's my advice.

I doubt it because there is a lot of work that goes into developing a ROM, like hours and hours, so usually phones that not many people have don't really get it, because why develop for a phone that 20 people own when you can develop for one that thousands or millions of people own.
Keep looking, there may a custom ROM out there, does your phone go by another name? Like an actual model number?

There are no developers that own that device, if they did then there would be ROMs for it.
There is no point in asking or waiting for developers to make ROMs for this device because it will never happen.
You've got a low end device that no one is interested in developing for, you'll have to learn to do it yourself if you want ROMs, that's the only way you'll get ROMS for this device.

S4 (4.2.2) is it leaked to S3 ??

Hi All:
This is my first time here, I've been looking for a Rom for my S3 which can make it more similar to S4 with all its featuers.
I flashed many Rom and most of them has the 4.2.2 update but it has the nexus touch which I didnt like on my S3.
Any recommendations for a good Rom which is stable and have no issues..
Thanks in advance

The only answer I can give you is: Take a look in the developers forum. If you see something you like, try it. Maybe go for a rom with a stock (Samsung/TouchWiz) look, since that's what you're used to from the stock ROM. Actually, I'd start off by rooting your phone(you've already done that, since you've flashed a lot of ROMs), and remove all the bloatware you never use from stock ROM. Maybe replace a few of the stock apps with better alternatives. This makes the phone faster, and frees up memory.
You can also freeze apps, if you're not comfortable with removing them from the stock ROM. This thread discusses which apps are safe to freeze/remove. The OP links to this document showing a spreadsheet of apps that are safe/not safe to freeze/remove.
If you're not familiar with the term "freezing apps", you should do a forum search(or just Google) Titanium Backup. It's a feature LOADED (you guessed it...) backup-app, which allows you to freeze apps if you don't want to uninstall them completely. In short, it "disables" the app, removing it from the drawer, but keeping it installed. You can easily unfreeze the apps if you need them to work for you again.
Hope this helped you on you way. The world of custom ROMs is huge, so you're guaranteed to find somehing you like.

Kombian

Thanks a lot for all the information that you've shared with me, I am still not familiar with many things in rooting which I might need your help with that.
The first thing, what you guys mean by Stock Rom? does it mean the original android framework that was not modified yet?
2nd: how to remove all the bloatware? and what do you mean by bloatware?
3rd: is it bad for the handset to be flashed again and again with many different ROMs? I always follow the steps which the developers mention in flashing any new ROM, so is there any right ways to do that without damaging my phone?
for now these are all the doubts that I have about rooting, but I might come up with many points in the future,
I hope you guys can help me in getting more knowledge about it, and thanks a lot for your precious time that you are giving me
Thanks again

which custom rom ? in android 2.3.4 ?

hiii, i am using android 2.3.4, very basic kind of mobile mts mtag 351. please help me in finding custom rom into it, i searched on xda as well as many other sites by writing the model number of this phone but unable to get any rom as its very normal kind of phone, also can i update it to ics or Jb? please help me in finding suitable rom for this phone. links, software or any other info very much appreciated. thnks in advance
more info in attach image.
Hi, sad to say. There is no development carried out for your device, hence why you were unable to find any custom roms lurking around the internet. Judging by the year model of this device, it is fairly old and let me blast out all the sadness to you.
I highly doubt your device will receive any update.
Same with custom roms, but maybe some dev may get this phone? Idk why.
And may make a custom rom for it.
Sad to say friend, your device is far to outdated to receive ICS or JB or any new Android platform.
Time for you to upgrade if you wish to say in line within the platform standards.

ohh k thanks for the reply well is it not like that i can flash wid any android 2.3.4 custom firmware ? for ex, here are the list
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1196704, is that work ?
No that's not how it works.
If you flash another devices .IMG or ROM to your device it will brick it. Meaning it will no longer be usable.
Better explained, you can't install a Samsung firmware for your device. It won't work.

You can try porting an existing stock or custom ROM from another device model that has the exact same hardware components as your device to work on your device. Without a stock ROM or stock source code for your device to use in the porting process, it will be very difficult, but it is "possible".

Not that I know of, start by doing some searches for:
"Devices with (your specific CPU in your device)"
That will help find devices that have the same CPU architecture as your device. Then you narrow your results by comparing your device to each of these devices, comparing all the other hardware in the device other than the CPU, things like:
Display resolution
Radio(modem)
GPU
GPS
Accelerometer
Front camera
Rear camera
Etc...
Basically, compare every component, once you have found a device that fits the criteria, then you look to see which of those devices have available stock or custom ROMs. Once you find something to work with, that is just the beginning, then you can start porting, but since you have no stock source code for your device, this means you'll have to get creative and build everything that you "don't have", completely from scratch.
If you aren't already a highly experienced developer with extensive developer skills and extensive knowledge of programming languages, you won't be able to achieve this because it isn't the kind of thing that you will find any kind of guide anywhere to show you how. It's a complex process that you will have to build and put together for yourself by writing your own coding with no resources to draw help from.

If the CPU is exactly the same, you can safely flash it with no issues, the worst that could happen is the recovery doesn't function like it should on your device. If it doesn't actually function for you, you'll have to flash a copy of your stock recovery.

If you find a firmware for a device with the exact same hardware, you'll have to port the firmware to change everything to what your device needs. You can not just flash the firmware and "hope" it works, that will certainly cause you to brick your device, potentially even hardbrick it, in which case, it won't be repairable, it will be permanently dead.

You need to look for guides on porting ROMs for devices made by your manufacturer.
