Xperia Z3 screen flickering, help - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I gave my Z3 a little bath in tap water in the sink. It was not submerged so this is more like a shower. I double checked and secure the ports. I don't even use the ports anyway because I have magnetic charging. I dried it and started using it. It was all fine until 5 mins later it just randomly turned off. Battery was good, tried using the power button and it wouldn't work. So I did the power button and volume + method and it fixed it. But the touch screen didn't work sometimes (randomly), there was a blinking red light before I booted it on, and there is rattling near the camera area when i shake it. I ran diagnostics and noticed that my screen was also flickering. Some of the tests used vibration as feedback and this made the flickering worse. Now the screen is struggling to stay lit. It turns on for 3 seconds and then it dies. You can only see parts of it too. I need help. This phone is unusable. I bought this phone (Sony Xperia Z3 D6603 black) from Worldwide Distributors on Amazon.com 3 months ago. I only took it into the water a few times. I don't think its water damage because I had the flaps secured unless Sony gave me a defective phone. I paid $700 for this and I'm not rich either. I was saving up. The phone has the standard 2 year warranty. Somebody please help. what should I do? Will Sony fix it or give me a new one?
UPDATE: Screen is dead. It still turns on and touch screen still works but cant see anything. It's like it lost signal . Kinda like how a tv loses signal. The tv still works but are no shows on.
IMPORTANT: I just found a little hole that shows part of the screen backlight. Its on the side but its more like a crack. I haven't drop this or anything. So this is possibly how the water got in. This is also Sony's fault. Will I get a new replacement or refund or repair or something?
Thanks for all your help.

Happened to me too! The screen is black but is showing the brightness and the touch works. It's totally weird!. i'm going to send the phone to SAT

Seems the lcd backlight is still working where the lcd screen is not;
not sure whether the warranty covers water damage or not...

Got around the same problem. happend in the water screen went black phone was still working. After a lot of reboots and resets it started to work for around 3 seconds then evantually the screen was staying, but is flashing now, looks like the flickering happens when the screen gets too much power. In light conditions it either flickers or is real dark.
What can I do to fix this? Or do I just contact Sony? I've also tried the pressure test and it is water resistant so it has to be something different.

If the screen is cracked they will charge you for the replacement for sure

Hi. I've noticed that my screen flickers when I put the brightness on maximum. Watching the behavior it makes me think that it happens all the time, but it's only noticeable the screen brightness is high. Tried to get it on film, but my camera does not seem to pick up the flickering.
I noticed this after a pool bath with my phone, but i don't know if it is related to that. I did not a chance to use maximum brightness before
I do not have any other issues though, just the flickering. Should i send it to repair? My phone is an 6633 Dual Sim Z3 (Brazilian, unbranded) with less then 3 months of usage.

Problem with the backlight

Hi! Two days ago, my phone dropped in water , i put them immediately in rice until today. When start it with the power button, i felt the vibration and i hear the open sound. But the screen remains black... but i discover that it was just the backlight because when i watch the screen under a lamp i can see the interface and slide between pages... but its very dark. Is it possible to change this backlight? or just wait few other days to allow time to dry fully. I welcome your suggestions! thanks

When there's water involved, IT's hard to know exactly what damaged. Could be just stain on the ribbon connectors, a burned fuse/diode/resistor (all of them micro sized) etc.. or just the LCD's backlight damaged entirely.
Keep it on rice for more time. I would make the battery to discharge to 0%, But it's also more recommended to keep the phone OFF. Only my friend LUCK knows.
To change the backlight, the whole screen needs to be changed.
Backlight died on me. Possible moisture.
First, it was on boot loop (on stock rom)
i went to restart it (holding power button and volume down)
then the screen turned bright white, restarted it and then the backlight died, dismantled the phone, now still in rice, also happened on 2nd April.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Took it apart down to the Screen (not the screen layers), left it in rice, works like a brand new now. Cheers.
I just replace all the frame and lcd for a new on my nexus 5, but the problem was still there... no backlight, i can see a little bit the screen, but it's very dark... do you have any idea for try to repair this, because now i don't think that it's the screen but more a motherboard or power problem for the backlight :S
exactly same problem here
nexus 5 phone dropped in water.
Backlight went out permanently - rice didn´t help.
Can see the display working using a flashlight - so rest of the phone seems to be working ok.
Just pruchased a new screen, put it all in and still the same problem: display works, touch works, backlight is off.
So it seems the backlight part of the display receives no power - anybody has an idea how to fix that?
thanks
I have answer to this!
I have had this problem like 3 months now and i finally fixed it.
Basically what i did was that i bought a broken nexus 5 (only the screen glass was broken) and tried to swap every part one by one. The one that was not working was the main dock!
It is a cheap fix, like 10£ on Ebay.
I am writing this post because anyone else haven't.
I hope that someone sees this.
I now copy this message to all other threads so people can fix their nexus 5's
PS:as you can probably tell English isn't my first language.
Hello! I am having the same problem. The cell phone fell to the floor and the next day the problem began. The display is not broken.
What are you taking about when you say "main dock"? Motherboard aka mainboard?
Thanks!

[Q] Screen goes partially blank

Hey, so I have this weird problem with my G Flex 2.
I got it around 40 days ago from U.S. Cellular.
I have run into this problem about three times now, and from what I can remember it always happens when I have music playing. I tap the screen on to the lock screen then let it go to sleep or turn it off myself. When I wake it back up the screen is all black except for a few millimeters on the top, where I can see some display.(*note, this doesn't happen every time)
I am able to scroll through the display but no pop up menus. Since the battery is sealed off in the back of the phone I can't use that fix, holding the power button only brings up the menu option to turn off the screen which doesn't do me much good since I can't use the screen.
If I wait for 5 minutes or so the phone will right itself, but I don't want this to be a persisting problem. I'm not sure if this problem is tied to the music playing, it hasn't happened when it isn't playing, but I play music on my phone quite often. (note* I am playing the music from my phone, not streaming)
If you need more info I'll do my best to provide it. This is all I can think of right now.
Honestly, I don't expect anyone to have a fix yet since the phone is fairly recent and not as popular. I tried looking under G3 forums since the UI is pretty much identical, but I didn't find anything.
Sorry, my post is a little wordy.
I'd appreciate any help anyone can provide. Thanks
Yes, this has happened to me twice recently too. Once the screen was completely black except for a bright white line at the very bottom, but the phone was still responsive behind the dead screen. The other time there was a distorted/ghosty notification bar showing at the top but nothing else (like what you reported). Then the problem would resolve completely and spontaneously after resuming from sleep a few times. I have the Korean model (F510S) which was a gift so I'm stuck with it - no returns or warranty available.
bonebeatz1234 also posted about a similar problem. Seems like a hardware fault?
The replacement phone screen was fine i had a different issue of over heating and had to return it . I opted to get another device the note 4. Didn't wanna go that route bit had no choice i loved the design and ui of the flex 2. I wished lg would of just ditched the 810

Hi, I encountered same problem here.
Is anyone able to send me a screen shot or a video of this problem.
As I need to use this to prove the situation and claim warranty from the seller, however I didn't take a photo or something when the problem happened to me.
please sent to [email protected] if you have the photo or video and many thanks~
Just had this problem also had a g flex 2 for about 21 days now and it happened to me after a restart in the car with a pinkish line at the top and the phone was completely responsive even though the screen was blank
I think it might have to do with heat cause I held it by the ac vent while I was reading this board on my nexus and when I looked back at the phone it was working perfectly
But I swear during my time with the phone it heated up way more than this time and this time the phone wasn't even hot
I reset the phone like 3 times before I held it to the vent and it didn't help at all
Using the att variant with android 5.1.1
Have the same problem every now and then, found a recommendation on another website and in the instruction manual to reset the phone by holding down the power button and volume down button for about 10 seconds or to turn it off by holding down the same buttons for 20 seconds. I find what works better though is to just leave the phone alone and it corrects itself within about 5 minutes.
Having this same problem. Happens once every couple of weeks. Any updates on this?
I think that this is a heat problem....everytime i left my phone in the sun, it show me this strange error.
I'm not convinced its a heat issue. I looked at my battery chart the last time it happened and it was barely over 90 deg. It seems it happens to me when it is charging PLUS doing something like streaming music or GPS is on. I need to start taking notes. I should have done that before.
this have happened to twice too. weird anomaly.

Having the same random issue. Today it happened and reboot would not fix (it usually does) finally after about 30 minutes the screen came back to normal. I now disabled lock screen in case I need to get data off the phone from pc ? in the case that the issue becomes permanent.
Sent from my LGLS996 using Tapatalk
although it's an old post, but worth to mention, that It can happen to all the LG Flex 2 models.
It is caused by a heat or inaccurate voltage. let me explain how it can happen:
heat - when you put the phone on the car's cradle under the car's front windows during a sunny day - it will happen.
voltage/heat - when you charge your phone and not using your original charger (eg chinese car chargers) - it will happen.
so what to do? I've noticed that putting the device over the cat's air conditioning , can reduce this to few minutes. also, if you can, mount your cradle over one of the air condition outlets and it will freeze your phone all the time

Nexus 5 really weird screen problem

Hi,
I have this really weird stuff going on with my Nexus 5 screen. I cracked it a couple months ago and bought a legit replacement screen for it and installed it myself (glass, lcd and frame). I fixed it with good instructions and it worked properly for two months. However though, now when I take it out of a pocket and try to turn screen on, sometimes it just doesn't light up. It's still on and every button works but the screen doesn't turn on. I have to give it a light tap or two on the back in order to make it light up again. Same thing happens sometimes when I'm using the phone normally, the screen just goes black and goes on after tapping it couple of times. Otherwise the phone works normally like it did when I bought it two years ago and after running couple of tests with screen, everything seems to work from touch interface to the graphics card.
Tried looking it up, no results.
I've noticed that the front camera doesn't work for some reason (probably just broken) and the battery lasts in use only 2-4 hours which isn't that much of an issue since I'm looking for a new phone. I just want this one to last long enough till I buy a new one.
It comes up when tapping the screen or power button? It could be a power button issue.
The screen comes back on when tapping the screen or the back of the phone. The power button isn't the issue. The screen just goes black but nothing else happens. It doesn't turn off or go to sleep mode.
Strange issue. I've never experienced it and any problems I had were related to the power button.
Could it be a loose connection inside the phone? Maybe an issue related to the proximity sensor?
Thats actually what I've thought. I have checked the phone's insides twice and didn't see loose connections, and the problem feels like it's related to proximity sensor since the screen going black happens exactly same way that when calling someone or doing something else where proximity sensor shuts the screen. It's really weird though...
Huh, I took backplate off and unscrewed the motherboard cover and took everything apart and rebuilt it and now the problem is gone. Seems like there was just some bad connection somewhere.
Glad you got it to work without having to pay someone to fix it

Touch Screen work after water submersion

Hello, ladies and gentlemen (and those inbetween, too)!
I will try to keep this as short as possible. If you want less details, tl;dr section at the end. EDIT: i.... didn't quite think this through
My girlfriend has an Xperia Z3 which she bought from a random seller from Germany (am UK residents). Everything about the phone was great, it was brand-new albeit it has been, apparently, been the display device; but other than that it worked perfectly. We even tested out the waterproofness right after setting up the device and charging it up to see if it works. Back then, it did.
Now, this friday (frikkin' Friday the 13th) she had some sort of an art project going on, which she wanted to do underwater. She does have a GoPro for it, but for some sample shots before finishing out, she decided she could just as well use her Xperia. Now, I was sleeping at the moment so I did not get to witness how she did it, but she assures me she closed the flaps extra carefully. However, after she tried submersing it into water, the screen started blinking randomly, as if there is some problem with LCD matrix of some sorts.
We put the Xperia into a bowl of rice and left it that way overnight. After turning the phone back on, the screen showed first "Sony Xperia" logo, then completely went blank. Just a random look-around on the Internet showed me that for extra help it would be best if you take your water-exposed phone and leave it upside-down while it is drying out. I was hopeless, but I didn't want to disappoint her so I said it would work. I was sure it would work since at times, when turning the phone on, some images did work out (like the charging icon when it's turned off and charging) so most probably the phone is not damaged yet, its just still exposed to water.
Next day, after leaving it just standing there upside down, the screen worked as normal, and normal touch functionality returned as well. Not for long however.
My final hurdle is this: When you turn on the phone (after being in vertical upside-down position) and hold it properly (as in, again, vertically, but upright-down) , the touch functions work very well. For a couple of minutes. After that the touch functionality artifacts (faulty touch detection, ultrahigh sensitivity etc) return. It appears that the water is still there somewhere, and as you hold the phone correctly, it goes down back a bit and impairs functionality.
Now, the question is: What can I do to completely remove the water from the device, seeing as keeping it in rice for 2 days did not remove the impairments from internal water exposure entirely?
So far I've tried only rice. Was bad call, but I did not think of anything better and used a bit of hairdryer at the very beginning of the issue, and yes, I now know that it was a stupid idea.
I think I will leave it in one-two more days upside-down in rice and see how it goes from there. Before turning on, I also thought about using the vacuum cleaner method of attempting to suck the water out of it through available holes.
Any other suggestions, tips and ideas? Would seriously want for things to go back to normal, considering now I do not have a phone (gave mine to girlfriend in place of her ill Xperia).
Thanks for your attention and I hope your devices stay healthy and safe!
tl;dr exposed Xperia Z3 to water with problems, turns out the damage was reversible and everything works well so far but touch functionality is faulty, still water stuck inside the phone that impairs touch screen, tried drying it by leaving in rice, gonna leave in rice for a day or two more and use vacuum cleaner on the holes right after, anything else that I could do?

Possible display damage? Or proximity sensor issue?

Hi everybody.
I’ve had this phone for 10 months now and it’s been great. Yesterday, when i was trying to make a call, it was telling me that i am too close to the screen. I understood that the proximity sensor was acting funny, but I didn’t had time to look into it, because it was not covered by anything and it was in good light. This morning it was a short white flash when I unlocked it or when I was turning the screen off. It worked great all day after that. Then this evening i was using the phone and all of the sudden the screen started to flash white, then it would turn off fast and back on all white. It did that for 4-5 times, then it went in the state you see in the clip below. At one tine, it turned on like nothing happened for 3-4 seconds.
If i plug the charger in, it reacts normal. It's making the charging sound and it vibrates. Seems to be alive in the background, even though it's not displaying anything.
Does it have anything to do with the proximity sensor? Is it the ribbon cable connecting the display to the motherboard faulty? Should i just order a new display assembly?
Interesting, the next day seems to behave a bit different. I had remote erased it, i didn't want any of my personal data to remain on it.
I have found out that if the brightness level is low, i takes a few seconds until it starts blinking. If the brightness is high, then it does that straight away.
Ok, i will post a follow up for anyone else having the same problem. Now i can see that the display is damaged on the top left corner, the pixels are staying lit up bright. Now i can use it on low brightness for longer periods of time without flickering.
I have ordered a replacement screen assembly and i'm still waiting for it, as i don't have the phone under warranty. Looking forward to getting it fixed.
I have also ordered a replacement screen and will replace it when the shipment arrived. Have you found a repair manual for the screen replacement?
I have already removed the back cover of my phone and it seems it will not be so difficult. But it would be better to follow a manual.

I read this post now, I've got this kinda of broblem a month ago, but this happened only when the phone temperature became hot, I mean over 40°C, after a factory reset everything became normal, I no longer got high temperature and this problem don't appear, so at least in my phone it wasn't a hardware problem.

How was the teardown ? I can't find any videos on it. The axon 7 was a pain for me because the aluminum case was a pain to take off around the corners and got damaged a bit. Hopefully removing the back of the axon 10 is a little easier . Thanks for any info
