[Q] Got it ... love it ... need root! - Note Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is anyone working on root?

Highly doubtful

Wondering how long it will take XDA to kill this post
This will be the third root related VZW post, seems someone keeps removing them. I'm aware that Root in the phones current state is not gonna happen, but this VZW thread will never take off if someone keeps removing the first post.
Thanks

The reason it keeps being removed is because it should be in the general thread. This is for development, not questions about development that hasn't started.

Stock Froyo restore with root

I flash my GF's phone with Gingerbread and after a few roms shes having voicemail notification and low wifi calling volume issues. Ive been told flashing back to Froyo will fix these so ive decided to return the phone back to stock. Can someone point me in the right direction on how to do this? Maybe an Odin file containing the stock rom? I would like it to have root again but its not a requirement. I can always root it again myself. Main thing at the moment is completely restoring it to how it was from the factory.

You can flash this via ODIN. From there you can use Kies Mini to get back to stock.
If you're just wanting KD1 with root, check out the Bible.
The Bible is a good read; it has a lot of stuff in it.
Unless your gf is giving you too much grief about making her phone meet it's potential... you should update her rom to one of the new official amazing custom GB roms. Any issue she could have has been or is being addressed. You need to read. READ. Search for your issues and read. Don't waste people's time asking questions like this as you will learn more figuring it out on your own.
I had a voicemail notification issue... I read and figured out you need the Visual Voicemail app to have functioning voicemail. Your wifi issue has been discussed thoroughly MANY times. Read and u shall be enlightened with knowledge and can impress her with an amazing phone.
As the last poster said you are on 2.3.3. That was before the devs had the official code. Follow their direction, flash an official rom, read the forum for issues and fixes the rom may have (even stock roms have issues) and give her phone back improved.

Thank you. I will try flashing the WiFi calling listed in that thread first to see if it fixes the low sound problem. My main point was I wanted to restore it back to 100% factory stock for a fresh start.

She does not care about potential, she wants reliability. I dont want anything custom I just want it back to how it was shipped from the factory. I have read plenty. Last time I was here Gingerbread was out for these phones and people were using it with no issues, however that is not the case for me. I was told that the only way to fix those issues were to go back to Froyo so thats all I was asking. Visual voicemail is already installed in the phone but that is not a fix, that is a workaround. I need to fix the issue. I dont even want an official rom that has issues. I want the one it came with when it was shipped so its reliable and functional. If it was my phone I would be all for messing with it but I dont need to be troubleshooting her phone all the time. I am experienced with HTC's not Samsungs, all this Samsung formatted ROM business is confusing to me. All I was asking was a simple "Flash this via Odin to get back to stock" kinda answer, not for someone to tell me to read. It was a simple question that required a simple answer.
Sorry, but that simple question really only required a simple search.
A simple search and a little effort would have brought you to this thread, and solve your dilemma.

I think if you had made the effort to find a fix and actually READ you might understand why I encouraged you to read up on it instead of asking the redundant question that has been answered more than once in the forum. All these lazy questions clog the forum with junk threads that bury all the good information. Think about it that way.

Im pretty sure the Q&A forum is for questions and answers. I did not post a question in the Development thread. Im not too sure how asking how to stock restore a phone will piss any developers. Cant expect everything good to stay on the first page forever. Remember theres a search feature to find anything that will get buried

I know it's an old posting and solved problem, but not for me. I've been receiving normal Voicemail notifications for months - after rooting my phone and removing the T-Mobile Visual Voicemail app. Then, suddenly, 3 days ago, the notification icon simply disappeared. So, sometimes the answers posted here are helpful and correct for many users, but they are certainly not foolproof. Criticizing someone who posts a question and assuming that person did no research toward solving the problem is shortsighted.
Also, I just restored the T-Mobile Visual Voicemail app using the free version of Titanium Backup. This did get the notification icon to start working again - at least for one test message left by my wife. Too soon to see if it this fix will last.
My questions are these: why did my Voicemail notification work fine for months - without the T-Mobile Visual Voicemail app installed, and what made the icon stop working?

Does importing backups to replacement phones work?

Hello everybody, I'm going to be getting a replacement model for my exhibit due to speaker problems. So in order to have a successful transfer of my content. Do I just need to make a nandroid backup, put it on my PC, and when my new one is rooted, I just import it to the SD card and flash the back up to my new replacement? I'd appreciate an answer to this.

This is so pathetic how a basic question like this gets absolutely no answers at all after all this time. Ironically this will probably get someone to reply telling me off with a bunch of BS. Always seems to happen that way. Can a moderator please delete this? It will probably get overlooked for that as well.

I didn't see this first time round, but you will probably find that part of the reason it got ignored is because people get fed up with constantly answering the same questions over and over again.
A nandroid backup from one phone to another (even the same model) is not guaranteed to work. Several reasons - the hardware build sometimes changes slightly during manufacturing runs, some software may tie into the IMEI or hardware ID of the phone, other reasons which I'm not clever enough to understand.
Your best bet is to;-
Do a nandroid backup anyway - you won't lose anything by that
Ensure all your stuff (contacts, apps settings etc) is backup up to Google
Use Titanium Backup to backup all of your apps, data etc so you can restore them one-by-one on the new phone if you need to.
I hope this helps a little and is not just considered BS. As for bumping a thread after two weeks just to say "please delete this thread" - a little pointless and very childish
Yes it will.

Im not trying to be childish. I know basic netiquette on forums and i tried to find a post already existing so I can avoid that problem. I just got pissed that day because me not being able to find a existing thread and not knowing who to ask while avoiding getting reprimanded is constant.

Um actually... you use Google to find your answer. If you get results, then voila! If you don't, THEN you make the thread. If you ask someone, its rather rude because you are asking them to do work for you.

This is why we can't have nice things

Firstly i'll admit this may come off as a rant, but i will be making some valid points that i believe need to be addressed
Secondly, i really don't care if anybody finds this offensive because well points need to be made and sometimes they have to be bluntly made.
Thirdly, i'm sure many of you will agree with me on these points.
Fourthly, @Mods i understand this may come off a bit harsh to some people but again things need to be said.
Finally, please enjoy this read
Well here's the story of how i ended up writing this thread, ever since the Galaxy S3 came out many of you probably noticed that i was constantly helping people every single day, basically answering the same questions day in and day out. For a while i was fine with that, but the past few months i've almost ceased posting entirely, why you ask? Because answering the same questions everyday when their are plenty of stickies, and plenty of threads already asking those exact questions just got tiring and frustrating. Its very simple to search the forums as well as google, and to post a thread asking about a problem that can be answered by simply looking 1 to 5 threads down is just laziness and not needed. I understand people want answers quickly, but sometimes where you post these issues becomes an issue as well.
Issues #1: READ THE ORIGINAL POST (OP)
Example A: Bajee11 brought rootbox to our phones, and now he's closed his thread. Why? Because people couldn't just read the original post and keep non-development talk out of his thread.
Thread can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2134052
If you read his original post right below the downloads section is a Non-development | Discussion | Support banner in big bold letters with a link to where non-development talk should be discussed, simple enough to read and understand. Its not hidden away at all, so their should be no reason why somebody can't see it.
What happened? Somebody flashed the i9300 (european) rom onto their i535 (verizon) phone. And essentially bricked the phone (wouldn't boot up) and that user posted about it asking for support. (ALL posts in their have since been removed so i can't show them to you but please take my word for it)
At this point, support should not be asked in the developers thread when he's stated not to post non development stuff in his thread.
But that's now what happened, people started helping him which is nice to do, but again in the wrong place. And posts continued which clogged up the thread and made things more difficult. Eventually the developer asked that it be stopped and taken somewhere else so that his thread wasn't clogged up with that junk, and this is what happened.

Bajee11: Dude, this is my thread so I expect the rules to be followed. I have over 20 threads to maintain and I don't want to come back here for every single post when it's not development related. You guys have no clue how hard it is to track bugs when users don't follow any rules and specially when you got several devices to maintain. Not only do you not know what a development thread is, you even take on me for pointing out this not the right place for bricked phone discussion? This is why XDA has different sections for these kind of things and users like you should learn that. Anyways, closing thread.

Somebody goes and decides to challenge him instead of being respectful and taking NON ROM DEVELOPMENT talk somewhere else, it could've easily been dealt with in PM's, or searching the forum, or help me god making yet another thread about it.
This user that had an issue could've solved his problem by simply looking at this sticky thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2079399
Why is this a problem?
Well quite frankly the people that were using the Rootbox rom now have to sit, wait and wonder whether support will continue for D2VZW or if they should move on, just because some people couldn't read the OP and follow the simple requests, and had to feel the need to then challenge the OP instead of just respecting him.
Oh but that only applies to one rom my rom is fine
Have you ever tried to figure what bugs are in a rom only to be forced to read a million posts that aren't related to that rom at all but instead somebody doing something stupid resulting in user error not rom error? I know i have, its so frustrating to have to skim through 20 pages when in reality if people could keep things where they belong we wouldn't have that issue. Once you flash something that's not stock on the rom, ANY BUGS that occur are not the roms fault, because their is no way of knowing whether whatever you flashed caused it or not.
Flash a different kernel, then have x,y,z errors? Post in the KERNEL thread about it, i guarantee you'll get more kernel support their than in the Rom thread. You could make a simple post in the Rom thread and say "hey guys i flashed X kernel and now Y isn't working, just letting others know" Bam end of story, its simple, alerts other users and keeps thing clean.
Okay so that's one post but i see a million of them, okay well lets say User A posts that, then users B-Y post irrelevant nonsense then user Z posts the same thing as A, that's why you see it a bunch. Because B-Y or a combination had irrelevant information in their posts.
Solutions:
Option 1: I realize this is hard but please people have some respect and self control and keep posts where they are relevant. Or maybe the mod's should just start warning/giving infractions to people that can't obey the rules and have some damn respect when a developer asks you to please take business somewhere else.
Option 2: Instead of cluttering up the development thread, go make some thread in Q/A even though that'll go against my second issue it'll be better than clogging up relevant rom information/development, that users want to see. I'm sorry but if you brick your phone flashing something that's not meant for your phone that your own damn fault for not reading what you're download and flashing.
Option 3: If you can't read the OP then you shouldn't be rooting your phone. Honestly folks its not hard to read the OP, its their for a reason, not for you to skip down to the downloads link, flash the rom, and then say "X and Y are missing" when in the OP it clearly states they aren't there. And what do you know that's one more useless post.
Time for me to take a breath...
Issue #2: Not using the search function
I realize this may be hard for people to understand but its their for a reason, not to just look pretty. Its sole purpose is to try and keep things clean and help users to find helpful information. How many of you use google search everyday? i know i do, probably over 100 times a day and its very helpful, so i KNOW that you other users have used a search engine before, so why not use the one on XDA? Its not rocket science and its got plenty of options to help you narrow stuff down.
Hell even before you post a thread, it'll automatically search for relevant threads related to your title.
Notice: When you enter a thread title the system will search for similar threads which have already been posted. That should help you to find answers.
Click to collapse
Now tell me are you blind, or do you choose to ignore it? I'm guessing its the second one. Or maybe people are too lazy to just read the titles of threads, i guarantee you whatever issue you are having somebody else has had and already got an answer for it. Obviously we can't force people to use it, but please people, google is your friend, the search bar is your friend.
Solutions:
Option 1: Up the post requirement for development sections, i know i know this probably will be hated but its clear that it's needed. People still can't seem to just get it right anymore. Maybe if they have to spend a little more time actually using the forum they'll actually start to realize all these helpful things around them.
Option 2: Can we just start banning people? haha i kid i kid. But seriously, can we give Rom developers the right to edit posts in their respective threads, so if they deem something as pointless, then bam deleted
At this point i'm out of breath and tired from staring at the screen.
But i'll leave with this 99% of errors are user errors not rom errors. Yes that's right i'm blaming the users, because hey its your fault for messing something up. I flash rom's everyday and yet i don't have these crazy errors that others have, but hey i'm flashing stuff that's meant for my phone People really need to stop being dumb and start reading the OP it contains so much information, i swear some of you will flashing anything even if in the OP it states "THIS WILL DESTROY YOUR PHONE" and guess what, you'll flash it anyways because you're too lazy to take ONE minute to read it. You could read while making your nandroid backup, oh hey that's a great idea And when you have an issue, just use the search function.
I understand we were all noobs at once, but still... like i said, most issues are user error.
TLTR:
-Please read OP's
-Please use the search bar
-Please post issues in their respective threads
-Please don't post irrelevant nonsense in development threads, that's not the place for it.
-Please if you flash anything not stock with the rom, don't blame the rom.
-Please post rom issues in rom threads, and kernel issues in kernel threads.
-Please if you do something stupid, keep it out of the rom/kernel thread.
-Please read stickies, they contain more information than your heart desires and will help you in the long run.
-Please try and understand where i am coming from
Oh and again, i don't care if i offended some of you.

Mhmmmm. But when developers decide they don't want to develop for a particular phone due to users being like that it starts to become an issue.

[Q] Is a new root method being worked on?

I've only had my S6 for a couple weeks so mine was already updated to the latest OTA version by the time I got it, and so I can't use pingpong. I don't mean to be redundant and post this question if it has already been asked but I can't find any other info at the moment in this forum, but does anybody know if anything is in the works for the current version that it would be worth holding off on the upcoming 5.1 OTA? Or is the root that you first wave guys got to use probably a one-time thing for this phone? Coming from an HTC one where I was able to unlock my bootloader I am starting to miss having root...
If a new Root is available, you will SEE it all over the forums... no need to ask.

Yeah don't bother reading the question before posting a dumb pretentious answer to it. I asked if one was being WORKED ON that was worth holding off on the OTA for, not if one was available now.
I agree.. Lots of jerks in these forums.. I check regularly to see if a root method is available BUT ALSO to see the progress if any.. Simple yes or no or say nothing .. No need to be an ass.

I'm not sure if a root method is being worked on for the current update but I can tell you that the exploit for pingpong has been patched so that is a one time thing. I think our best bet for the next method will be when 5.1 comes out.

Yeah don't bother reading the question before posting a dumb pretentious answer to it. I asked if one was being WORKED ON that was worth holding off on the OTA for, not if one was available now.

No, everyone has given up all hope and quit.
Seriously, what kind of answer to you think you would get?
The people working on it are rarely going to talk about it until they actually have a solution unless they are working with other developers trying out possible solutions. None of it is going to be public until they have a solution to prevent the MFG or vendors from plugging up a new hole they found before they can use it.
Asking if it is being worked on is just plain dumb. This is the same cycle of every new device that has ever been released with the same questions asked all over again.
What really is the point in asking? IF and when it becomes available it will be big news splashed all over the forums not just here but other places.
Constant asking about it is actually a violation of the forum.

Asking once like I did isn't against any forum rules, trolling everything thread you participate in like you do is: it doesn't take a hard look through your posts to see that. I'm surprised your mommy and daddy let you talk like this on the internet. You don't actually contribute any knowledge or development to this site, you just act like a moron to make yourself feel better about how fat and useless you are. Stop even posting in my thread you scum

I agree.. Lots of jerks in these forums.. I check regularly to see if a root method is available BUT ALSO to see the progress if any.. Simple yes or no or say nothing .. No need to be an ass.

Don't take things to heart. You have no idea the mean, egotistical, lonely, MODERATOR EDIT that I've taken MODERATOR EDIT from. I agree, quite a few negative unnecessary replies.

Is Android LP rooted for this phone yet?

I just got my Note 5 this afternoon, not a single one of my credit or debit cards will work with Samsung Pay and since I am with USAA it may be a while before it does, as such the itch to root is even stronger now.
Has the latest OTA been rooted yet? I am currently still on 5.1.1 but I am getting the notification for an update.
Would it be wise to update or should I wait a bit longer?
In other words has unlock and root been achieved on the newest OTA yet?

Please browse the forum. Your answers are literally a click away. Heck you can even Google "root tmobile note 5," and it'll bring you right back to xda.

I didn't ask if it could be rooted.
I asked if MM had been rooted or if it was only LP at this time, as all I see in the development forum are 5.1.1 roms and kernels.
This is why I asked the question the way I did.
There is a very good reason that XDA has the reputation of being a bad place to go if you have questions, and your response is part of that problem.
The Q&A forum is for precisely these style questions.
Now, seeing as how I did not ask how to root the device as there are plenty of threads on that, would you care to take a stab at answering my actual question.
I won't be mad at a link to a thread which answers the question I asked.
Just do this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3187422
Looks like this when done right
And again, note that the link and the screenshot is for LP, I am asking if MM has been rooted yet.
Though I do very much appreciate the response.

First of all you never stated anything about mm in your original post. Secondly note 5 is still on lp. The only thing you stated is if the latest Ota has been rooted, and the latest Ota is lp and yes it has been rooted so there is your answer.

Its all good. I won't go there with this one. The back and forth isn't worth it. You should also probably edit your post!
MM Beta is rootable. Go to the development section to find out the pros and cons of using the beta. I advise you to stay on LP. There's only the stock rooted beta kernel available for MM. There's a lot of cons to being on it, so please keep that in mind is you decide to flash it.
See how much help I still gave you without actually posting a link? Not trying to be a **** but if we soon feed the work, the work wouldn't know how to feed itself. I started off as the wise noob ever, and bricked phones. If I had only taken the time to Google and research, those devices being bricked could have been avoided.

Jammol,
I realise in my first post I did not give names as I had thought I had. This is why upon re-reading it I apologized as my original question wasn't clear.
Thank you for the follow up.
In any question thread the answer should be clear, even if it is simply a link to another post, in this way those coming here in the future can follow the link rather than seeing a simple "nevermind I figured it out" and my post being the only response to their search. Please note, I did not say you had to provide a link, just said that even if your answer was simply a link to where I could find the answer that would be fine as well.
Note I did search, but as I was looking for MM ROMS I could not find anything, I was under the mistaken impression that MM was on the device. This is where I erred and why I could not find anymore information.
For all future folks taking a look at this thread, as of today MM is not available on the Note5 and the newest OTA (as of today) has already been rooted and you can find a number of ROMS in the development section.

Damn, you came off as really stabdoffish and a bit entitled, like everyone here owes you their time searching for a subject you could easily have searched for yourself. Smh

Honest question for you.
After reading the thread, seeing where I had apologized and seeing that the issues was solved and the back and forth was done, what compelled you to respond in such a negative manner?
You end your statement with "smh" which I can only assume stands for "so much hate" as it is currently used.
So why bother? You see the thread is resolved, you see the question has been answered but then you just felt this need to respond?

Smh means shaking my head. And it doesn't matter if it was resolved, you got all upset that none of us took the time to GOOGLE or FORUM SEARCH for you, when you could have easily done that yourself. The sense of entitlement was pretty thick.
And again, if you had actually bothered to read I state that I did search but was under the mistaken impression that this phone had an update to MM when it had not, hence the reason I could not find anything when searching for MM ROM's, this is why I asked.
So your assertion, especially after I had already stated I did, that I didn't search is completely unfounded.
The issue I took was with a response that boiled down to "do your own research as this help forum isn't here to help you".
This is an issue at XDA and why XDA is universally made fun of and considered a bad place to go if you have questions that haven't been answered, because a bunch of folks will respond with vitriol without bothering to read the rest of the posts.
For instance, the best answer was already given, but it would have hurt nothing for Jamool to have said:
"The latest OTA update is currently LP and that has been rooted, you can find multiple roms in the development section of the forum, here is a link (link). And in the future make sure to make use of that search button."
At which point I would have realised that I was mistaken on the idea that the Note5 has Marshmallow already and that would have been the end of the conversation.
Now, can we consider this matter closed otr would you like to once again respond and tell me how I didn't bother to search?
P.S. I cannot be the only one that has noticed that the search function seems to stop working at 11pm EST am I?

Where you on N920TUVS2COKC when you got it? If so how did you root it. I got mines today & dont see any updates available. Also the space kernel has been pulled.
............ junk . deleted
I did google, and as I said already. I was wrong.
I guess you really don't bother to read previous posts.
How dare I post a question in a question and answer forum specific to my question.
