Battery life?

I just got the Captivate on Sunday so maybe it needs some time to settle in or whatnot, but I thought I'd make a post about its battery life. How's everyones experience with the battery so far? I love this phone to death, but it seems like the battery life sucks so far. It also seems to take a really really long time to charge up.
I have the display at 11% and haven't done anything with the phone at all today and I'm already at 80%.
3h 12m since unplugged. Says what's using my battery is:
Display: 35%
Cell Standby: 22%
Phone Idle: 15%
Bezier - Live Wallpaper: 7%
Android System: 6%
Advanced Taskkiller Free: 5%
Alarm Clock Plus: 4%
Android OS: 3%
I have GPS, Wifi, Bluetooth all off. Autobrightness is off, I just have it set to 11%.
80% after 3 hours of doing absolutely nothing to the phone doesn't seem right. I'm killing apps I'm not using and the only thing more I could really do is kill the live wall paper but it doesn't seem to be taking that much battery life and I really like it.
Any thoughts?
Also it seems to take like an hour and a half to get like 15% charge when plugged into an outlet. It just takes absolutely forever to charge it.

Yea my battery life is also draining really fast. It tells me that the screen is using 73% of the battery though....

When I first got it I used it till it died pretty much and then charged it all the way back to full. Wasn't sure if this was necessary or not, but I'm just pointing out that I did it. I have obviously been using it a bunch when I first got it, but now I'm not, trying to see what kind of battery life I have. I haven't done anything except look at the phone a couple times this morning. Haven't even run an app.

I actually think this phone has great battery life. It typically takes a few charge cycles for the battery to settle in. I abuse the phone a lot and it lasts all day for me. Compared to my tilt2 this thing has much better battery. I would suggest that you guys run the battery all the way down, and let it charge fully overnight a few days in a row, and you should see and increase in performance.

I just installed juicedefender. Looks interesting. We'll see if it makes a difference.

Running down the battery to about 5 or 10 percent and then charging all the way up several times definitely helps. Its been almost eleven hrs since I unplugged and I'm at 73%
Let it run down and then charge all the way up several times. Worked with my phone.

My Battery Life on my bold was better but then it is a different phone and the battery was almost 2 years old but still worked great. Now my battery is at 22% and when I left a 8:50 am PDT, I pulled it off of charge, and I am playing music to intentionally get the battery down to 5% or less before I charge it. Not bad considering, I am constantly doing a ton of stuff, browsing, playing games, playing music the first time, and running google earth/maps as well as you tube videos.

ive been unplugged for 2 hours and 27 minutes and im down to 67%

Haven't done much with the phone all day. Installed juicedefender. Left it on easy settings. Not sure how much it's helping so far, if anything. This is my current breakdown: 8h, 48m since unplugged... 35% battery remaining. Display: 45%, cell standby: 16%, phone idle: 10%, Live Wallpaper: 7%, android system: 5%, beautiful widgets, maps, speed test, android OS and advanced task killer 3%, 3%, 3%, 3%, 2% respectively. Still think it's not doing what it should. A good majority of the day I've left it in the off position, not messing with it. 30% by the time I leave work really kind of sucks.

I remember when I had my Iphone down to like 60% when I left work I'd enable pandora streaming and plug it into the car charger and be back up to 85% by the time I got home at least, and it's a half hour drive.
When I plug it into the car charger or a regular outlet I'm lucky if it goes up 2% after a half hour. I'm starting to wonder if this thing has a bad battery.

What is your phone's uptime?
I've been unplugged since 6:45am this morning.. its about 2:40 now and I am at 73%.
I've been downloading apps, playing with androidVNC and just continually tinkering with settings.
My uptime is 111:40:00 and its been 7h 50m since unplugged.
I'm using launcher pro.
I have a bit of speculation that Touchwiz has something to do with it including its special widgets.
Something isn't right with that.

What the iPhone was doing is called a rapid charge. That 85% is not equivalent to an 85% charge that you would get from discharging from 100%

Fair enough. I'm very interested in checking out this article, but I've gotta run now. I was going to give the GPS one more shot on the way home. If I can't get a lock and the battery doesn't get much of a charge being plugged in the whole way I think I may take it back to the AT&T store and see if they'll swap it out or even give me a battery replacement.
Should I reverse the root before I do that, if I do? I know that's entirely off topic. Should I just remove the superuser permission app (if I even can)?
Additionally, just throwing this out there anyway, according to this review: http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010/07/23/att-samsung-captivate-review/ their camera is awesome without any settings changes.. I find the regular camera kind of blows. I'll upload some pictures if anyone wants to see em, but I used my phone, on the basic settings, to take pictures of my Iphone which I was selling on ebay and the pictures came out kind of crappy, especially for being 5mega pixel. The video camera looks great, but the picture part of it I am really surprised at. My overarching point is I think there might just be some lemon phones out there possibly, and I think I might have gotten one. I'm running into all the major problems that some people are complaining about. Camera, GPS locking, battery, lagginess of the UI, etc. I think I'm gonna try to get AT&T to swap my phone out.

LIke said in other threads, mine just draining like crazy before but now it seems to be pretty bearable. Here are the things that REALLY helped me:
1.Completely drain the phone till its dead.
2.Fully Charge the phone with it off! Yes you can live without it for a little while
3.Disable the live wallpaper,
4.Use Launchpro and heaurisitc which is the vibration when the 4 buttons at the bottom are used.
5.Reduce vibration overall
6.Dim Screen
7.Turn off everything except I run wireless and fring 24/7 basically
AND this phone is fast,
I dunno if its available through the free launchpro, but I paid for the plus and its sooo fast.
1.I just disable all the animation crap and everything and make everything level 8 on speed of opening up
2.Disable the elastic animation when moving from screen to screen....
3. I would really suggest people pay for launchpro plus, cause its cheap and the work is almost gods gift to cell phones ahahhaa....

7am and now its 1PM with Wifi and Fring on since 10am and last checked its at 80% with a 15 minute phone call. and messaging probably 30 messages.
I am going to drain it till its dead tonight again and fully charge with phone off again. I think this helps a lot.

I unplugged my phone at 8:30...listened to an hour of Pandora, checked email, and was on Twitter...down to 85% at 10:30 which is pretty good to me. I also don't have a task killer installed for what its worth.

Well Update around 30 minuets my phone completely died for the first time so I am charging it now, and I am hopeful that it will get better soon.

I just want to mention that I swapped out my captivate at the AT&T store yesterday. I let it almost die, then charged it to full, unplugged it for 5 minutes, charged it to full again, unplugged it for 5 minutes and charged it to full again and left it connected over night.
I've been using the phone all day today, changed settings, texted, generally used it, since about 6:45AM and I'm at 71% battery at 11:35. Insanely better. By a lot. With the old phone I'd be at 30 or 40% by now, honestly.
Additionally, the screen seems much brighter, even at the lowest setting. The camera seems to take better pictures and everything seems much snappier and quicker on the phone, by a lot.
I got the GPS to lock on once, and while it wasn't perfect, it followed me, and then I couldn't get it to lock again unfortunately, but I'll keep messing with it. I think it's a samsung update issue anyway, with regards to the GPS.
I really and truly believe that I got a lemon phone. I know that the AT&T store by me sold out on the first day so I definitely got this one from a different batch. This is like a totally different phone. If anyone else is having these kinds of problems with lag and battery life and things, try getting the AT&T store to swap out your phone. You have 30 days.

The iPhone and many other phones like the Droid charge faster for some reason.

I have tried 2 different Windows Phone 7 devices. The Focus and LG Quantum.
I have been completely floored at how long their battery life is. Is this just because I have only evaluated them for a short amount of time.
I have compared them to my EVO and I will have to charge my EVO 3 to 4 times as much either one of the phones.
My usage has been
Between 30 and 50 text in this duration.
5 to 10 phone calls
Blue Tooth usage for audio/calls
Wi Fi Usage
Listening to Music

I agree completely! My Focus has never let me down, even during a day of heavy usage. These people you see on the forums complaining about battery life must not be coming from Android phones.
I have a suspicion that WP7 is designed to hit the network much less in the background and when the screen is off, thus using less power throughout the day. My only proof is that my monthly data quota is being depleted almost half as fast with my Focus as compared to my Aria.

I'm getting about 50-100% more battery life out of the Samsung Omnia7 compared to the HD2 with the same usage.
...but I'm also trying to treat the AMOLED screen right, so I mainly chose applications with a black background to make it last longer.
Omnia7 is lasting 2 to 3 days, HD2 lasted 1 to 1.5days.

hmm, my omnia 7 lasts 1 and a half day at maximum with low usage (just a few calls, sms and mails, a little surfing the web). all with dark theme and all apps with dark background...
at average it lasts exactly one day, definitely worse than my desire with a custom rom
i woundered about this cirumstances, because the battery is bigger than my ex-desire.
what are the biggest battery consumer in the os? maybe i have missed an important setting? (gps is off...)

My settings are:
Bluetooth always on (but not connected, just the 1hour I'm driving my car each day it connects to the navigation system automatically).
WLan always off
Location service is always on
I'm using the phone for approx. 10 SMS, 30min calls, 1 hour RSS feeds/calendar/internet and a bunch of EMails each day.
When listening to music, playing games aso. the battery is dying earlier but these are exceptions.
The thing that needs most of the power is the screen. Whenever you switch on the screen, the battery is draining fast. When browsing the web (white background) it is draining even faster.
Also, switching from UMTS to GSM needs power, in areas with bad reception the battery will drain faster than with steady reception.

also "find my phone" will use more battery.

i cant seem to put my WP7 down and still get @ 8 hours out of it.

Does anybody have problems when charging via usb through the laptop?
The other night I left my phone charged via the laptop all night... but when I woke up in the morning it appeared to have the battery completely drained.

Weird... my battery charges - slowly - while connected via USB, even while I am tethered.

it's probably a silly remark but it of course won't charge if your pc/laptop is sleeping/off.

Yeah, I had that problem too. I left the phone connected to my PC overnight, and the phone drained much more battery than it does normally (unconnected).
Otherwise it drains about 50% per day for me.

I found the same for charging off of my sleeping laptop... the battery drains itself over night. My fix was to close my laptop, let it sleep, then plug my phone into it. It stays trickle charging over night and has been fully charged for the last few weeks now.

Nexus 5 not charging/charging slowly

I was wondering whether anyone else is having issues with their Nexus 5 not charging, or at the very least charging super slowly?
Mine has been plugged in for about 3 hours and only charged up about 10%. Could it be a teething issue (it's the first charge out of the box) or something worth contacting Google about?
Any input would be gratefully received.

Yeah, I've rebooted a few times as I've been installing odds and bods and getting it how I like it.
I plugged it in with a different charger which took it up to 100% in about an hour, but after unplugging it and using it for about 45mins it's dropped like 35-40% - and that isn't media consumption, that's just settings, web, etc. I'm not sure whether its me or the phone!

Definitely the phone. But I can't figure out exactly what.
The drop to 40% could some from brightness, data, you using and playing with it. In that case, the charger is broken, and needs sending back.

When it's charging go to settings > battery and see what it says at the top next to the word charging.
If it says (AC) then it should be going up around 1% or so every minute, if it says (USB) then it will be anything from 1% every 3 or 4 minutes to every 15 minutes. If you're using the stock charger (plugged into wall socket) it should always say (AC), if it says (USB) then something is wrong.

I'll keep an eye on it over the next 12-24 and see if I can isolate what's responsible. It's an odd one though, for sure.

Glad it's not just me experiencing this. I noticed yesterday that when I took my new Nexus 5 out of the box and plugged into my computer's USB port to charge it the phone's battery percentage was rising painfully slowly, and the percentage wouldn't budge at all when the screen was on.
I charged it to 100% over night using the supplied charger. Drove to work this morning with it plugged into the USB port on my car stereo, and unlike my Nexus 4 which would usually be on 100% by the time I get out of the car, the Nexus 5 was on 94%.
I've been at work for an one hour and 20 minutes now, and whilst my nexus 5 was sitting in my pocket doing seemingly nothing it has dropped from 94% to 80% battery. At this rate it will be on red before I leave work, and even sooner than that if I have to actually use it.
BetterBatteryStats doesn't work with Kit Kat yet so I'm unable to gain any further clues... Will be interested to hear what happens with your Nexus 5.

I've been keeping my eye on it and it seems that Google Services is using the most battery, 24% at present, and my screen - which I would expect to be sapping it the most - is only at 9%.
That said, I charged it up to 100% last night and left it and it was at 91% by morning without being used at all. By lunchtime it was down to 73%, again, without any use save for half a dozen text messages sent.
It's not terribly impressive so far, it has to be said. I'm hoping it's just a painful breaking in process rather than an RMA issue, because Google offers shocking after sales service.

You don't need to RMA. It's the software's fault. Maybe the fact that Google Now listens to you continuously when you're on your homescreen has something to do with it.

Sounds like the phone is performing some sort of heavy background task? Maybe backing up your app settings?

Mine also seems to be discharging very quickly and charging very slowly. It charged the same way on a few different chargers. My SIII can usually go from 10->80 in like 30 minutes...

The always listening thing doesn't seem to be activated on mine (it's a UK model), but I've been surprised by the drain when it's on standby, without even being touched. I'm used to battery life being a bit iffy, as I've come to this from a Nexus 4, but I was expecting a little bit more so far.
I've tried factory resetting in the hope that it might iron-out any potential software issue, so I'll keep tabs on it today and see how it progresses. Fingers crossed, eh?!

I thought I was the only experiencing this issue it takes awhile to charge and battery drains very quickly. Last night battery was down to 20% this morning woke up and found battery was completely dead, not impressed at all. My biggest concern here after using note 3 for the last month this is very worrying indeed.
Mine is also from the uk.
What are google like on returns and s&@t?

I think this is definitely a Play Services issue.
When I checked my phone late last night I noticed that Google had forwarded a Play Services update to the Play Store. I've been playing with my phone this morning and battery seems hugely improved. Watched YouTube videos for 45-50 minutes and the battery dropped from 100% to 91%, which would suggest a potential screen-on time of around 8 hours and 20 minutes in total. Not bad.
I've had my phone in my pocket for 30 minutes and the battery hasn't budged from 91%, which is again good news. Yesterday it was dropping 1% every 5 or 6 minutes.
It will be interesting to see how it holds up when I stream my Google Play Music library in the car on the way to work, or how it is when I get to my office where the signal is horrible. "Play Services" battery consumption was high on my device yesterday but"mobile standby" was just as bad. Will report back later.

Change your google now voice setting to US English and the hotword box should appear when you back out and go back in.

I have a slightly different issue. My Nexus 5 ONLY charges at USB mode with any other charger than the one supplied. I've tried 5 chargers including the car charger and BB PlayBook high-speed charger. I've also tries using the supplied USB cable with another charger but it's a slow-go.
Very disappointed. May have to RMA because my buddy's phone does not show this problem.

In my experience Google Play customer services has been bloody awful. Got dicked around on a simple RMA request (the screen on my N4 went nuts spontaneously) and received no updates or anything. Every time I wrote to them I got told "We're waiting for a specialist to deal with this". It ended up going on for over a month before I said "Sod it" and just sent it to LG. Who, it has to be said, returned it as 'repaired' without even looking at it, leaving the problem still present. Had to just pay the extra out and get a door-to-door replacement from Google in the end, which I wanted to avoid.
In re the problem, have you had the Google Play Services update that @Stylus_XL mentioned? I haven't yet, I don't think. My battery is still draining too fast. I haven't touched the phone for hours, then picked it up and made one 2 minute phone call and it dropped 4%. Stylus, is yours still stable after the update or have you seen any other issues?

My first battery cycle was weird. Took a few hours to reach full, behaved normal on the way down. Second charge from about 40% took about 90 minutes to reach full. It may just be the first cycle or two.

[Q] slow charge, fast drain, hot batt, jb update

I have a galaxy s relay 4g
It took 2 hours of constant usage, to kill the battery from 50 to 0%
Figuring this was normal, I was configuring everytthing while downloading 50apps over wifi
Note phone was on airplane mode, but wifi was on.
Next day I updated from stock ics to stock jb
Turned it on, it was at 91% and after 5 min of usage the phone said it was too hot to charge the bat.
Phone went from 91% charge down to dead with one hour of moderate usage and 2 hour siting idle on airplane mode, wifi on..
It was 46c on batt temp whole time
Charged for 3 hours from pc usb and it gained 3%.
Charged another 3 on wall socket that came with nokia lumia, rated at 1400mA.
Charged 15%
The battery info showed that even though the phone was off, it woke up many times during the night -- IT WAS OFF as in the battery with the 4 white circles on the bottom were showing!
Turned off, removed sdcard, factory reset (left sd out, its still out) i
Came back ok, it syned to google and reinstalled all my apps, then died again
I've tried 2 batteries, and 3 different chargers,
I factory reset the phone too.
Wake lock says the android system used 18% of the battery... other than that I can't see anything obviously wrong

Stock on any device is also resource hungry.... What are the specs of the chargers you are using...certain chargers will not put out the needed amount of ma or volts...which also messes with a Samsung battery overcharge feature

Charger 1 is my pc usb port, which charged my other two phones (mytouch q by lg and sammy captivate glide) about 70% as fast as charger 2.
Charger 2 is what came with phone but doesn't appear oem. 5.7v at 600mA
Charger 3 is the oem charger which came with wifes lumia 925 which rates at 5v at 1400mA
Its "charging" in my car now, no sim card, wifi on and connected to a medium strength signal, 0% charged and I wached the voltage steadily decline as I hit refresh in the gsam battery monitor. Started at 3.3v and in a minute was at 3.18v. Still 0%
Car charger is a no name brand (which kept my captivate charged pretty well despite using gps at the end of my 6 hour drive the phone was still at 75%.)
The battery is samsung oem.
The first battery I tried is also samsung oem.
I also have a 5v 1amp charger that will fill both phones between 1 and 2 hours if memory serves, the 1.4 doesn't seem to go any faster as I guess the won draw much if any more than 1 amp.
Given all of the above I'm inclined to think its software or other hardware issue.... phone was sold as "seller refurbished" on ebay, but the description says its just an open box sale of a phone that came back within the first 7 days....and yes I bought a square trade warranty in case some BS like this happened.... but want to try and fix before going that route.
Is there no way to factory reset to the original ics firmware?
I see you also have a relay, once I get this all figured out id love to root and rom mine like you have yours!
I know the newer android roms have more features but are they more or less responsive in general?
Main reason I got a relay instead of another captivate glide is the relay has much more rom development.

And now the red charging led isn't even turning on..... I wonder if its defective.

Grabbed a brand new USB cable plugged the phone into a 5th charger, oem HTC radar, 5v at 1amp
swapped the battery for the 1st one I had.
Appeared to charge fine. Pulled out the charge cord at 50%, plugged it right back in.... the battery charging screen went from about 50% down to 20% in 1 second.
Confused, I left it plugged in and went to bed.
Got up this morning and it was dead again.... while plugged in, while off, not even the charging led was on. switched to the 1.4A charger, still nothing... hit the home button a couple times and the thing woke up into the battery charging screen (it ignored the power button the whole time)
The gsam screen was even more interesting:
it doesn't show much but the line graph showed a rapid decline from 20% down to almost 0 from some short time before 3 am, then
3 hours from 3am to 6am, the charge went from near 0 to 50%, and then in half the time back down to near 0.
The temp graph wasn't a line, but fragments of one
does Gsam show the amperage of the draw or charge on yours? its only ever given my the voltage of the battery and shows 1mA on the bottom of the battery,
ebay seller says clean the charge port with alcohol.... not sure why someone should need to do that on a "like new" phone but I'll have to try and find something tiny to shove a paper towel in there with..... that would account for the not charging but not for the high drain.... could thins thing have a short someplace?

sounds to me like a defective device. the fact that you did a factory reset and it's still not charging even with it turned off is probably the biggest sign there. it can't be any apps you've installed because you wiped them all off. i think you've gone way above what should be normally expected of a customer in terms of troubleshooting your device. hairline scratches on the phone are fine. you should still be able to return/exchange it IMHO. especially with the squaretrade thing.
yes, it's possible to flash back to stock ICS but if it's not working with the factory rom (whether ics or jb) the phone obviously has issues.
i just bought mine a couple weeks ago too, though not over ebay. i found a local tmobile "authorized" store (advertising on craigslist) that was selling stuff with similar description - open item or customer purchased and returned within a week. i have used mine on all sorts of chargers without issue: a motorola dual-usb rated at 750ma in the car, a monoprice 2.1a charger built into the 10-outlet power strip at my desk, 2 different laptop usb ports, and a samsung wall charger rated at i think 1.8a which came with my wife's galaxy tab 2. i never ran stock rom for more than about a day or so, just to verify proper operation of the phone, and now i run cyanogenmod11. i can go all day on a charge with what i consider medium to semi-heavy usage, which i think is great.
for example, yesterday i unplugged at about 9am after an overnight charge (with the phone on - i almost never turn it off because i have to be able to receive on-call alert emails from work). i got the day started in the attic installing radiant barrier (so it was rather hot). i had the phone in my pocket streaming a shoutcast station over wifi for probably about 4 hours. later, i watched a 30 minute show on netflix (also wifi), played some wordfeud, surfed the net a bit, watched some youtube videos on fixing my weed eater, did a few emails for work, probably 20-30 texts and maybe 10 minutes worth of phone calls. by 11pm i was still around 30% charge remaining. at no time did i plug in my phone during the day.
i have an extended battery on its way from china, so i expect to be able to go 2 full days on a charge with similar usage. and the thicker back plate will make it easier to hold, since i have such long fingers.
tl;dr - you got a bad phone. exchange it.

Battery problems after s3 update

Hi, I installed the S3 update over the air to my Korean S2 a couple of days ago. Everything seems fine except for issues with the battery. I Can take the watch of the charger after an overnight charge and wear it all day, powering it off before i go to bed in the evening. When i shut it down the charge can be over 50% but when i power it back on in the morning the charge is just over 10%. If i leave it powered on but not on charge the percentage will increase over the next couple of hours back to just under 50%. The problem is i can never be sure what the true state of charge is, so i am unsure whether it will last the day.
Anyone else having this issue or know how to fix it?

That's weird. My battery life seems pretty good. My watch has been off the charger for 5 hrs and I'm still at 94%

Yeah, it looks like that first 2-3 charging cycles were not good, but today I have really good battery life. ... So my problem is solved.

On the old firmware I could wear it 16 hours and put it back on the charger with over 60% left. Since the update I am down to 20% in four hours. I've done 2 hard and one soft reset to no avail. The battery thing on the phone app says its my watchface and I should use a dark one but I am. This, frankly, is a show stopper. I can't recharge 2 or 3 times a day. Any idea how to reinstall the R734XXU2DPG1 firmware? That worked.

Apparently a couple of recharges fixes the battery issue. Don't know why but it does. So far at least.

I just updated my gear s2 classic yesterday with the new ota, my battery doesn't even last for 2 hours now, before it gave me 1_1.5 days. In battery usage it shows 22% usage by contacts and 19% watchface even though I'm using the stock with no customization and even the background is same as default for menus.
I've denied the permission for gear plug in for contacts even then the drain is too fast.
How can we fix this, any ideas.
