Last night my Xoom went into sleep mode after I had looked something up as usual. When I went to use it again, it was dead. Absolutely nothing. Plugging in the power cord never showed it getting a charge. I seriously thought it was dead for sure.
Solution:
Hold power button and volume up button and system came back to life...sort of. I got the motorola logo but at the top of the screen it said something like Starting RSD Protocol 3 and just sat there. Release both buttons, did the same procedure and she roared back to life and is working fine now.
Just thought I would share that in case it happens to anyone else.
Same happened to me about a week ago; My Xoom turned off and would not come on or even start to charge when I plugged it in, I was freaking out, then I accdently hit vol up while trying power for the mill time and it turned on...
Just hold down the power button in it will do the same but just don't load in bootloader

Mine just rolled over and played dead as well. I had about 3 quarters charge, put it in sleep mode and then nothing. Holding down the power button did nothing as well. And like the OP, I had no charge indication when I plugged it in.
The volume up and power combination did bring it back to life. I want to clarify for others who encounter this that just holding the power button alone did nothing.
Sadly I had to look up the fix on my wife's iPad2.
Fortunately she was not home to see that...
Did you flash a kernel? I had the same issue with a kernel I flashed from the Ubuntu thread in the dev section. I flashed to a Tiamet kernel and it went away. Before that I flashed the stock images and then the kernel.
I think its kernel related.

Sorry. It was bad form of me to leave out the OS . Mine is a factory stock Verizon.
I had a similar issue with mine a few weeks back. Battery was at about 50%, plugged it in to charge when I went to bed and woke up and it was completely dead. It took me almost a half hour to get it to start charging again so I could power it on. I didn't do anything fancy with it, no power / vol up magic, it just suddenly decided to start charging again and would power on. I still have no clue as to what the root cause was to my problem, only happened once and no issues since.
I'm running a stock 3.1 ROM and kernel but rooted.
Same thing happened to me last night. Plugged in before bed and wouldn't power up in the morning. I freaked as my Xoom is less than a week old. Power + vol up was the only solution. Strange, but judging by this post this seems to be a trend, hopefully one that will not be a regular occurrence.
Running stock rooted rom with Tiamat kernel conservatively set to 1.2 ghz, although it seems this problem isn't confined to a particular kernel. Wifi only HMJ37 (US) model - It would be handy if everyone with problem reports with their hardware version and kernel etc so that any trends may be documented.

deceased xoom, no charge light but charger was warm as if charging, so held power button and volume UP for probably 10 secs & BADDA BING! power up as normal1:laugh:
Last night I ran my battery down to the point where it said Powering Off or whatever. I charged it all night and nothing. When I plug it in, sometimes it has a red LED in the upper left for a econd or two, then does one vibrate, then becomes completely unresponsive.
I've tried a battery pull and hooking it up that way. Same thing - red LED, one vibrate, then nothing. Some times when it is plugged in, it will show a battery picture with no juice for just a second then it all goes blank again.
I am running AOKP build 4 with Slim Kernel.
HELP!!!!!!!!!
I would try another battery, sounds like the one that you have us showing up as dead even after charging overnight.

Just unplug the phone... pull the battery... put the battery back in and WITHOUT plugging the phone in turn the phone back on (may have to hold the power button for a little while).
Strange plugging in the phone without a battery should bring up the charging screen with a question mark in it I think
So the problem has been remedied, though I would like a little input to better document this problem and solution...
I took the battery out, plugged the phone in, then popped the battery in. Really quickly, I got it to enter the weird screen where it is an exclamation point in a yield sign (I forget what combination of buttons I pushed to get here). It said Volume up to continue or Volume down to do something else. This is where it was fuzzy because I was freaking out about having to buy another phone.
Anyways, I hit the volume button that was supposed to reboot and it went through the boot sequence and showed me charging at 98%. This is strange because it was plugged in all night but non-responsive - not power, no heat, no nothing.
So long story short, if running this ROM/Kernel combo - DO NOT LET THIS THING GO TO 0%!!!
And if anyone can tell me what combo I pressed to enter that screen, it would be very helpful. Thanks guys!
The screen you got to is called Download Mode..
Download Mode - This is a setting in which you will put your phone when using Odin. There are other ways, but most people will reach download mode by powering down, removing the battery, and holding volume down while plugging the factory usb cord into the computer and phone. Odin can only communicate properly with your phone if the phone is in download mode.
For future reference you have to
1. hold volume down + power + home button
2. Per on screen instructions, press volume down to reboot/restart device.
This is a documented problem and one that has been posted about numerous times, glad you figured it out. Also, this will always fix the problem so you should not worry if the phone running this ROM/Kernel combo runs down to 0%.
too bad samsung doesn't have a genius bar.....lol
This should help anyone with a Z3 or Z3 compact where their phone doesn't turn on or do ANYTHING.
In my experience I was using my 2 week old Z3, no problems, until one day I locked the screen using the power button and it wouldn't turn back on.
I tried everything, soft reset, hard reset, yellow button next to sim card tray, plugging it into my computer etc etc. Still nothing.
I knew the phone was working because it started to get quite hot towards the top of the phone.
Eventually came across a fix that worked for me and hopefully will for you, so don't think you've got a shiny new ornament just yet.
I don't know what is required and what isn't but this is what worked for me:
1. Hold the volume down button for 30 seconds
2. Keep it held and plug your phone into a power source (wall or computer) using the USB cable. No response?
3. Let go of the volume down button. Now press the volume down button and power button together for 5 seconds. Still no response?
4. Press the volume up button and power button together for 10 seconds. This should cause your device to vibrate 3 times and then show the battery charging screen.
5. Turn the device on using the power button as normal.
Alas!
I was ready to send mine off to Sony's awfully long repair service which last time took nearly 8 weeks (I could've personally driven to Japan/China and back from the UK)
Hope this works for someone!
I think the last step is all that's required. Holding the volume up button & power button for a few seconds (5? 10?) will cause it to vibrate 3 times and reset. It gets you out of pretty much anywhere; learned that from messing with my Z1C's bootloader.
Having the same problem
I'm having the same problem, my Z3 compact is nearly 4 weeks old.
during 5 in the morning, my battery is at 80%, then I lock the screen and went to sleep.
then I woke up around 4pm and my phone is dead as ****, doesn't respond to anything
I do. I've tried what you've said in this post and nothing happens.
I have few APPS in my phone and I never tried exposing my phone into water. can somebody please
help me

One pretty important feature you left out here, which is as close as you can get as a battery pull, open the microsd slot, and inside is a little yellow button, push this in will 9 times out of 10 power cycle your phone.
Same problem

I am having the same problem. I just bought the device through Amazon DE and i am thinking in returning it. Any way to solve this ?
I have noticed that in my case, at least, this is always happening when the battery percentage is getting close to 50% (half of the battery is consumed). I have KitKat 4.4.4 and i expect this problem to be solved with the new Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade.
Sleep of death companion... other issues?
Hello all,
Xperia Z3 (Tmo D6616) since January. Super happy with the phone, especially being able to run long distance without worrying about sweat damage, listening to music in the shower, and other shenanigans otherwise impossible before. Anyways, yesterday morning i was showering, phone was alright. After shower dried the phone with a towel and put it on a shelf in the bathroom. Forgot about the phone for thirty minutes, came back and noticed that the camera had fog condensation inside the lens. Ohhhh! crap, so I open the ports and put the phone near a fan. Also, phone wont turn on... So my first thought is water damage. So I packed the phone in dry rice for a few hours. Take sim and SD card out. Next i decide to power cycle the phone with the yellow button on the sim port. Phone buzzes three times. But after that... nothing. Phone has been stored in rice since. When i plug it i get rapid red led blinking. I called Tmo and dude tells me that he has the same phone, and that it souds like deep sleep, not water damage, due to led and buzzing. Problem is i can't replicate buzzing and no combination of the above seems to work. At a loss. Any of you know what the red led blinking means while the usb charger plugged?
PS: condensation gone from phone, or so it seems.
Same problem
Hi all,
After 4 weeks my new Z3 would randomly shutdown and I would turn it back on, until of course it refused to switch back on.
I have attempted a hard reset using all 3 combinations of the power and volume buttons. The only response was 3 vibrations from holding all 3 buttons whilst plugged into a charger. The red light would flash intermittently whilst on charge, and constantly when either buttons are held down.
When plugged into a PC, the USB connection would repeatedly connect and disconnect.
Is there any hope? I need to recover photos from my mothers funeral.

FYI, currently in RMA process through Tmo... gonna get a refurb... not the happiest camper with Sony's approach, however, this begs the question: Given the spate of issues with Z3's maybe a refurb would not be such a bad idea, especially if it addresses the issues that are most common... Anyone received a Z3 refurbished? Would you mind sharing your experience?
Try connecting a diff screen at a technician....dont pay unless it works..

Doesn't help you, but as a side note, I had mine replaced twice using Jump and both times I received a brand new phone sealed in the box. BTW, last one has Dec 14 build date and the assembly is much better than earlier ones I had.
super thanks!!!

hello, at last i found the answer,! tried all the suggested actions i searched on the blogs, but this one really worked for my xperia z3c and after that it updated to lollipop, i hope it would not shut down randomly again, i'll wait for maybe 2 months before i actually make it my main phone again, but at least it's back now and i really miss my xperia z3c, it's really the best for me thanks to you!!! God bless!
Sometimes (once/day), when i woke up my Z3C from sleep, the touch screen is frozen and the only way is to reboot it with power and volume buttons.
How can i debug this behavior ? I found nothing about that issue...
Thanks for this post!
I've managed to get to the point of three vibrations, but then it just burns the leds in three colors, and then vibrates 3 times again and so on.
I've also managed to get to a point where the led stays constant blue (by playing with the volume up/down).
But now what?
Worked for me
:good::good:
the 4th step worked for me, thank you
4. Press the volume up button and power button together for 10 seconds. This should cause your device to vibrate 3 times and then show the battery charging screen.
Xperia Z3 keeps restarting when trying to charge
Hi all, I don't know if someone did encounter same problem as I. Yesterday my Z3 was 100% charged. Overnight the phone started to restart and battery % went nearly dead showing around 2% left and the red led light starting blinking as well. I tried to plug on charge to a wall source and now it keeps restarting and the "Sony" logo only would appear and it keeps to restart again.
Saw some solutions among which I have tried press holding the volume up button along the power button so as it should vibrate 3 time but in vain. The phone ain't charging anymore and it keeps restarting either plugged with my pc or wall.
Please can anyone help on this one?
Cheers
Kris

I decided using Flastools

The solution was to use the flastools , installing a new ROM ..
I hope this helps someone !!
Sorry for my bad english !!
I bought my Zenfone 2 about 3 months ago and it had been working perfectly fine. However, on the day before yesterday the phone appeared to lag more than it usually does but I didn't pay much attention to it. Later in the evening I noticed that the battery was not reducing and it remained constantly at 50%, despite me having watched at least an hour of youtube on it.
Later, when I was watching some videos online, the phone suddenly turned off - I thought that was because I had used up all the battery, so I plugged it into the main using the original cable and charger, but the phone would not charge and the little light on the top right of the phone never came on. I could not turn on my phone and all the phone would do was buzzes every few minutes. So since then, I have kept the phone connected to the charger (and it carried on to buzz twice every few minutes). I tried to turn the phone on yesterday morning by long pressing the button on the top of the phone but it would again not turn on at all.
When the phone is being charged, it buzzes every 1 and a half minute regardless of which charger or cable I'm using, and when the phone is not being charged, it doesn't buzz
Someone tried to help and suggested me to do the 3 following things:
1) Hold the power button for 15 minutes then let go and press for another few secs to try to turn the phone on - I did this, and the phone did buzz when i tried to turn it on, but the screen is still off, as well as the small light on the top right
2) hold the volume up + power button for 5 seconds, then release volume up before releasing power button - my phone buzzed after holding both volume up + power button for a few seconds, but still the screen did not come on and neither did the small light.
3) hold the volume down + power button for 5 seconds, then release volume down before releasing power button - nothing happened. The phone didn't even buzz.
I don't really understand why I was asked to do them, but i did them anyway
I am currently in the UK and I bought my phone from abroad so I cannot get a warranty fix in the UK.
Please kindly help if you know the the problem is and please give me some advice.
Much appreciated. Thank you.

Hey guys,
Something odd happened this morning and now I am sitting around with a $700 paperweight. Woke up and took the phone off of charge like I usually do and started to read the news. about 10 minutes in the screen and touch buttons froze so I decided to reboot the phone, To my surprise the phone never came back on.
I've tried VOL Down + Power for 30 seconds even longer out of desperation along with just the power button and VOL Up + power to no avail, The phone is dead, Simply dead. I just wanted to reach out to the community to see if I am just one of the lucky ones or if anyone else has had this happen to them?

I don't know which variant you have but look for the MSM download tool thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7-pro/how-to/msm-tool-guac-t3934691
Have you tried volume up and volume down while you press the power button? Release only the power button when you feel a vibration. I got mine stuck with a black screen while I was tinkering. I know it's a different situation, but it's worth a shot. If it works, you'll end up in bootloader mode. Just use the volume keys to select reboot, and tap the power button to select it.
