Optimal Grid Size? - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Using Nova and playing with various grid sizes. What is the optimal grid size for our screen so there is no wasted space and everything aligns nicely?

I an running kklauncher with 6 rows 4 columns, 5 dock. I like the layout and feel of it. Ran the same on my S3.
Sent from my ghost white Z3!

I use the free Nova Launcher with 5 rows x 4 columns on desktop and app drawer view. Also 5 on the dock, including the app drawer icon. I noticed the icon alignments on the desktop do not align with the dock icons, but this is also an advantage to tell the difference between the two when you have a full grid of icons.

I am running 5x5. Works best for me. You can change the way icons in the dock are displayed though. Just go into settings and set it.
It's called width margin or something under dock menu. Set it to 'none'.

I do 6 rows, 5 columns on the homescreen, and 5 in the dock. No margins, no padding, no icon labels.
For the app drawer I have 5 rows, 4 colums with labels.
Also with Nova btw

11 by 7 with Nova Prime, no dock. Seems like I go for a much smaller icon size than most, gotta make the most of the lovely high res screen though right?

[Q] text widgets only look good with ADW Launcher (u8150)

For those of you who own the Ideos u8150:
Have you noticed that the text from widgets such as Minimalist Text and SiMi Clock look bad displayed on your screen? I have tested these widgets using many launchers (default, Zeam, Launcher Pro) and the only one that these widgets look good on is ADW.Launcher. Other launchers show a pixelated dark shadow around the text which looks bad on transparent background. Anyone know why this happens?
My guess is that the widgets were designed for 320x480 screens and the launcher app is having to re-size them to fit the 240x320 u8150 screen. ADW Launcher seems to handle the resizing great while the other launchers don't. Was hoping someone out there knew of a fix that will allow these widgets to look great with other launchers.
My current ROM is FusionIdeos 1.98. This may be the root of the problem but I doubt it.
See my examples:
The first pic is how SiMi Clock looks with default, Zeam, and Launcher Pro launchers. Notice the dark color around the white text. The second picture is SiMi Clock with ADW.Launcher. It looks great with it. No dark pixelated color around white text.

Never noticed this myself, but from your pics the difference can be seen. I think your theory about screen size is correct.

[APP][FLIP LAUNCHER] quick app access [2.1+]

Android devices are meant for multitasking. Some devices, like the Galaxy Note 2,
are specifically designed to launch two apps, or more, at the same time.
The Google Play Store also offers a variety of multitasking apps to allow
you to multitask on your device. The FlipLauncher app is a multitasking app
that allows you to group your favorite apps or shortcuts and access them
from wherever on your device.
get the extremely usefull app HERE
When you launch FlipLauncher in portrait mode, 6 colored bars (i use one) will appear
on the left side of your screen. These bars serve as your virtual drawer
containing your apps and shortcuts. Just swipe to open those bars.
You can set up to 4 apps or shortcuts on each bar, giving you a total
of 24 apps or shortcuts.

}
The app also allows you to personalize the bars on your device’s screen.
You can change a bar’s color, adjust its width, set its placement, and
set its opacity. You can even disable one or two bars. These virtual drawers
really look like the Multi Window feature of the Galaxy Note 2 but arranged horizontally.
The app also has a different layout when you hold your device in landscape mode.
In this screen orientation, 4 colored bars (again i only use one) will appear on the left
side of the screen. Each bar allows you to place 6 apps or shortcuts, giving you still a
total of 24 apps.Just like the previous orientation, you can still change a bar’s color,
transfer the bar to the opposite side, adjust its width, and set its opacity. You can also
remove some bars according to your liking.

Modify GEL icon grid without messing up icon placement

As you can see in the screenshot, after modifying the DPI to something more realistic and not comedic, the UI adjusted perfect except it didn't center the all apps icon above the home button. I'm wondering how this could be fixed through maybe a mod or something.
I do not want a new launcher that doesn't have Google Search built in. Its not the same stock experience. Any idea what I should do?

Depends what you are trying to do. Are you trying to get more docked icons at the bottom, or the main grid on the launcher. Basically, what I did is I changed my DPI to 439 (wanted 445, but notifications get cut off in the pulldown bar). This is ideal for me and gives me an app drawer grid of 5x6. However, the launcher grid stayed the same, so I used the Launcher Tweaks settings in Gravity Box to customize the launcher grid to 5x5. Now, I still only have 4 apps in the dock tray on the bottom (plus the app drawer icon in the middle), but I do have a 5x5 grid on the homescreen. It looks like it came from the factory this way.

Folders: Is there any way to have more than 9 icons without scrolling?

There's certainly enough screen real estate for at least one more row. And if they weren't spaced 25 miles apart there would be plenty of room for another column as well...
Use another, third party launcher besides the stock or Google Launcher and you can set as many rows or columns you need depending on their limits. Atom, Nova and several other launchers come to mind. I think MIUI lets you change it too.
Also just as an FYI, stick with the Q & A forum for questions as some people will remind you later om.

Are you talking about the home screen? If so, you can change the layout from 4x4 to 4x5 or 5x5

Thanks, but I'm talking about folders, like this:

I tried Nova when I first got the phone but some of the widgets looked really crappy compared to stock, so I went back to Touchwiz. I'm not sure which is the lesser of evils between the limited folders or crappy widgets! I haven't heard of Atom launcher. I'll check it out.
Thanks!

Question Recent apps, home and back icons

My tablet is Samsung Tab S7 FE with Android 12 and One UI version 4.1.1. After last update the desktop changed.
Before the icons at the bottom: recent apps, home and back, were in the middle of screen. Now they are on the right side of the bottom line, which is very annoying: you very often accidiently touch those icons.
I tried to move the position of those icons by pressing long - no success.
I don't want to use Nova Laucher or similar apps, so any possibilities to move those icons back to center of bottom line?

You can change the position. You have a choice of left, center, or right.
Thank you, now it works!
