[Q] Moto G 4G xt1039 recovery and root problems - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I unlocked my new Moto G 4g xt 1039 (Android 4.4) without problems, but i cannot get it to accept any recovery i try to install. I tried manual adb with CWM and TWRP. I also tried the Moto Tool AIO and Easy Recovery.
All of them failed to flash the recovery except once when the recovery was flashed, but after booting it, it did not react to keypresses and touch.
I'm on Windows 64bit nad flashing every other device i have and had wasn't a problem.
Does anyone have an idea. Every thread regarding the device was more or less outdated so help would be appreciated. I like my devices rooted.

Just a short update and push ? Chainfire root worked. Still no success with recovery though.

Are you using a recovery built for peregrine?
Try one of the TWRP versions by @Somcom3X found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...ection-somcom3xs-experimental-corner-t2996266

Yes, i've also tried to flash one of @Somcom3X recoveries, too.
The problem seems to be one of my previous attempts to flash a recovery, because i get two messages on the phone in fastboot mode when trying to flash a recovery:
cmd : getvarartition-type:recovery
cmd : getvaar:max-download-size
I'm pretty sure there should be at least two more lines after that, when sucessfully flashing. To me it seems as if the recovery partition seems to be broken. Any idea how to fix it. If iit is the problem at all.
I already tried reinstalling the stock recovery with Moto Tool AIO. Iget the following ooutput on the phone:
cmd : getvarartition-type:recovery
cmd : getvaar:max-download-size
cmd : download:00a00000
cmd : flash:recovery
bab check failed for recovery

Have you tried booting the image? Fastboot boot xxx.img
Sent from my XT1045

I tried now. the upper third of the screen is white and the two lower thirds are blue for a moment and fade to black with backlight on.
Update: For reasons beyond my knowledge it works. I cannot get it to boot to recovery from the fastboot menu, but it works with adb command boot recoveryxxx.img and from within advanced boot menu.

Friends, made unlocking the bootloader and used the kingo root and the procedure was successful

[Q] Can't flash recovery of Motorola Photon Q

Hi together,
I've got a Motorola Photon Q 4g LTE mobile phone and this afternoon I wanted to install CyanogemMod, but whatever I do, I stuck with the following problem:
I can't install any other Custom Recovery. I tried ClockworkMod and OpenRecovery, but I always get the s**t Motorola Bootloader, when I start in Recovery Mode. The Bootloader of my Phone is unlocked via Motorola Website, as told in many other threads.
I know that the users arrrghhh, shabbypenguin and Skrilax_CZ are great experts with firmware and such things, but I'm not allowed to write in developer's forums because I'm new here.
Has anybody got an idea for me, how to geht the Custom Recovery to work?
Btw: I tried to root the phone as well, but that wasn't posible. May be things come together or depend on each other.
Thanks for your help!
When you flash recovery (IE run the fastboot command) is it successful?
With the phone in fastboot/bootloader mode, type "fastboot devices" in the command prompt (where you run the fastboot flash command) and what does it output?
Also, try this.

When I flash recovery, I just flash the Motorola given Recovery by Motoroloa Bootloader. The Phone restarts, a logo with the Android Man is shown (stomach opend with some engeniering tools in it) and after about 5-7 Minuten, the system starts normally.
I also managed it to change the "Unlocked Message" into a Motorola Logo by using fastboot flash logo xxxx.bin and I nearly destroyed the flash by flashing an unlikely file. So the phone was shortly out of order because oder "flash failure" (fastboot mode). After that, I managed to flash the "boot.img" file of an CyanogenMod, so the flash was rebuilt and I could use the phone normally.

It shows the connected devices by showing a 8 or 9 ditigt number. It's almost the same view like I connected the phone without fastboot and use "adb devices".

This one I didn't tried yet, because I was so dissappointed of the mismatch with ClockworkMod & Open Recovery. Do you think, that trying this one will help, after two others failed?!
Thanks for you notice and your time. That's very helpful!
You need to boot to recovery after flashing it. There's a shell script that is re-flashing stock recovery - the dead Android dude with tools sticking out of him is stock recovery....

Ah ja, now I'm one step closer. I did not know, that the dead Android dude is the sign for stock recovery.
I'll give it this afternoon another try and will report. A bunch of thanks to you at this time!
Hi, it's me again. I managed now the reboot to recovery, by holding the volume up button while doing the "fastboot reboot"-command with the command box. That worked and I could start Photon Q Open Recovery 2.06.
Unfortunately, I did something wrong or so and now the script re-flashed stock recovery again. Nevertheless, I now know how to operate and will do the rest by my own (hopefully).
@arrrghhh: Thank you very much for your help!
So, I finally did everyhting the right way (now with ClockworkMod Recovery), because I now have CyanogenMod running on my Motorola Photon Q
:victory:
@arrrghhh: Thank you very very much!

Can't flash twrp need help!

Okay so I received my opo today and wanted to unlock and root etc.. I managed to install drivers and download a toolkit which managed to unlock my bootloader but wouldn't flash the recovery so I attempted it manually via fastboot and after flashing it would reboot to a back screen then vibrate and reboot to system.. Been doing that all night? Any ideas? many thanks in advance new to this phone
Exactly what recovery version are you trying to flash? What OS is on the phone? Get rid of the toolkit, they're nothing but trouble.
Twrp 2.8.1. And its running android 4.4.4 cyanogen mod.. I have mate haha. I take it fastboot and adb are installed correctly as it shows my opo after typing fastboot devices and it unlocked my boot loader soo I'm confused

Try flashing the recovery again, followed by this command
Code:
fastboot erase cache
Then:
Code:
fastboot reboot
Then try booting into recovery.
PS. You've unchecked the "update CM recovery" option in Developer Options, right?
same problem for me. tried manually installing any custom recovery, tried two different toolkits. it flashes and reboots, but then you can never enter the recovery app. even attempting to put stock back fails. i attempted the format the cache and that didn't do a thing for me. basically had to enable cm recovery updates and reset to factory in the os. after that i was back to scratch at least.
I was able to figure it out. Appears the version of TWRP is quite particular for some reason. Once I tried the latest build from here dl dot twrp dot me/bacon/ the problem was solved. Thanks for the tip @snickler

Help Neeed Putting CM12 on Moto G 2013

EDIT
-------------
Thanks for the support from the people below but I have now solved my origonal issue. TWRP didn't seem to be working with me so I downloaded MOTO G 4G/Peregrine Easy Recovery (Credit to the absolute legend who made that) and then installed ClockworkMod instead, which worked perfectly. I have now succsessfully installed CM12 onto myMoto G 4G. If anyone has the same issue and want's some help, just message me.
I am trying to get CM12 into my Moto G 2013 (xt1032) and have hit a problem which I don't know how to solve. I successful unlocked the biitloader on my phone, and attempted to root it. After many different methods, I finally got my phone rooted (not sure which method actually did this) however, I also tried to install TWRP on my phone, and I now don't have a working recovery on my phone.
I have tried all the root apps of installing a recovery, as well as 3 or 4 similarpc methords and non seem to work. I either get the no command screen, or the failed to boot error. If anymore detail is needed, just ask.
If anyone has any ideas on what I can do, I would be very grateful. My desired outcome is to either have TWRP or the Stock Recovery Working and also a working methord on how to install CM12. This is my first time at rooting a phone so please be considerate of the language used in any responses.
Thanks, Dan
I usually use fastboot and a PC but if you are wanting to use an app and are already rooted I have used TWRP manager available in the play store with out issue
TWRP manager is the solution, but I gnrally recommend you to do it using fastboot on a pc

How would I do this? I have fastboot already installed if that is what I need.
Also, what can I do to get the default 'recovery mode' back onto my phone. At the moment, I just get an 'Unable to Boot' error pop up.
Thanks for the quick reply.
https://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_falcon#Installing_recovery_using_fastboot
You just need to download recovery file on your computer (I recommend it), boot to bootloader, either by using adb reboot bootloader or by holding Volume Down & Power simultaneously. Then you have to connect phone to your PC (if you haven't done it yet) and flash recovery using fastboot by command "fastboot flash recovery your_recovery_image.img".

After doing this with TWRP, using the same method, I get an 'Unable to Boot' message. I have now however descovered MotoTool AIO and Moto G 4G EasyRecovery which I will try. (Credit to all developers who created that software)
UPDATE!!
I have now fixed my issue and have CM12 installed. Please read the edit in the first post for more infomation. Thanks to everyone who helped.

Bricked Lava Icon - Need Help

After Lollipop Update of my phone (Lava iris icon), I had to root in again and while trying to root it from custom recovery, I bricked it ( may be the recovery is not compatible). So,it stuck in the bootloop and by pressing Power and volume buttons, I am only able to access Fastboot mode. I downloaded the stock rom of device and tried to flash recovery , boot etc. with fastboot commands, but it is still in bootloop. I also tried to flash cwm recovery (though it is not available for device, I chose the nearest one), but in vain.
When I try to flash system partition, it gives error while erasing system <unknown command> (may be due to fact that phone is not rooted as of now). Also, SP flash tools are not recognizing the device and I cant use adb commands also. So, I am stuck with only fastboot in hand and I have stock rom as well as lollipop update, but i am unable to use these due to errors. Can anyone help? I will be very thankful for an advice. Thanks in advance.

is there a partition file with the stock rom you downloaded?
if so, try to flash that first with fastboot.

[Q] [HELP] Unable to succesfully install ANY recovery

After trying for over three hours, reading what seems like all threads on the whole of xda and some other sites... i am ready to eat my phone. Ok, must get myself together :-/ . Here we go.
Specs:
Moto G 4g on dutch carrier (vodafone), XT1039
Situation:
Came from completely stock lollipop system, then succesfully unlocked phone via motorola website using the fastboot proces. Intending to install custom rom, first need a recovery. I am now stuck at this step. When booting i now get a screen "warning bootloader unlocked" before the moto splash begins, this is normal as far as i understand.
Problem:
Unable to boot into recovery. Directly after flashing any recovery (with fastboot) and choosing "recovery" from the bootloader i get the message "boot up failed"
After restarting the phone and choosing "recovery" from the bootloader i get the android on its back picture stating "no command"
Already tried:
installed the android sdk, fastboot and mfastboot.
Am able to send commands to phone with (m)fastboot. Flashing works.
I flashed: openrecovery twrp 2850 xt1032, clockwork 6047 falcon, philz touch 6587 falcon, twrp 2870 falcon m stock, twrp 2801 titan v2 and twrp 2860 xt1032
all give exact same result
"fastboot boot NAME of IMAGE"
"fastboot erase userdata & cache"
"fastboot erase recovery"
did the above things in any imaginable combination
I hope someone has some fresh suggestions for me? Thanks for your time.
Bro as far as I know the recovery is not installed u should install twrp from this thread the one on the official site gave me soft brick
Now about the dead android with no command shows that you are on stock recovery and u have booted into it successfully to go further into stock u have to press power and volume up at the same time (like u lock ur phone) but it won't help in installing anything try the recovery I linked (first format your phone complete data and cache wipe from stock recovery not necessary actually) install it through fastboot command and let me know if it worked (with thanks button) BTW what's ur bl ver
thanks for your fast response faizxy, as stated i already tried the one from that thread (i did not use the identical interpunction to describe it but to be clear it is twrp-2.8.7.0.-falcon_M_STOCK.img)
Where do i find my bootloader version? It is the one that came with the device, factory issue...
Some extra info, that might anwser faiz' question: when i boot the bootloader it shows:
"AP Fastboot Flash Mode (S) 41.1A (sha-80481ae, 2015-04-10 14:30:28)
Hope you guys will forgive me for bumping a bit soon, but I really hope some one has a solution! Tomorrow I have time to tinker some more
Have you tried at least one recovery that is actually for your phone (peregrine)?

Ah. I guess not. Did not know that there where recovery's specifically for the peregrine/xt1039. I searched for "moto g" but apparently is wrong model. DOH!
Thanks for helping out! My problem is solved.
For future reference; finding working pergerine recovery was quite difficult; most mirrors are down. I found one here: https://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_peregrine and then under header "installing recovery.." under step 2 the download link (i avoid deeplinking)
This one seems to work for me. Now lets find a nice custom rom!
The ones listed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/4g-development/progress-twrp-2-7-1-0-source-t2807585 dont work for me. One gives black screen, the other one shows an unlock slider which is unresponsive.
Hi,
Try this one... With encryption abilities or without, your choice...
