[Q] m8 Won't take OTA 4.4.4 - details inside - Verizon HTC One (M8)

Info:
Verizon HTC m8 4.4.3
Previously rooted with Towelroot
Unrooted using SuperSU
Simple Root Checker confirms device is not rooted
Wiped partition cache (per suggestions from various places)
When attempting to update, red triangle with ! appears on screen after reboot
Error message: "/system/app/6525_v0.0.1.455_Production_3.2.2.57.odex contained unexpected contents"
I can't find that error message listed anywhere else on the web so I hoped someone here has a workaround. I am trying to avoid doing a full factory reset and prefer to take the update OTA if possible as my luck with pushing manual ROM's has been varied at best. If I need to just grow a pair, fine. If someone has an idea for getting past this, I'd love to hear it.

You can run my s-on ruu for either 4.4.3 or 4.4.4. Neither of the s-on one's will wipe.

Can't flash an OTA

Hello everyone, I'm tring to go back to stock but im having some troubles. My device is s-off unlocked got supercid and twrp. I flashed the ics ruu went without an error. But now im trying to flash an ota through recovery but keep getting the same assert fail every time.
I tried to change the updater-script first 2 line from the top but when flashing i got an installation aborted error.
Should i keep trying to make it work or just restore it all from a backup ?
When applying an OTA you must work your way up with each OTA made available for your device. The reason for this is that one OS may have something that the next expects to find when updating.
So, if going from 4.0 to 4.2.2 it will fail since the OTA for 4.2.2 is expecting to find stuff that was given to the device during the 4.1.2 OTA and since the updater-script cannot verify it's matches it ultimately just aborts.
Goes with the saying, "baby steps".

[Q] How do I update a rooted, locked, 4.1.2 to 4.4.2 OTA?

Hello. I have a XT925 running 4.1.2. The phone was rooted a long time ago. I don't remember if I installed a recovery, nor which recovery (if any) was installed at the time (volume up + power yields a boot mode selection menu; it seems to be the original bootloader).
My carrier released the 4.4.2 OTA just today. When I try to update, the phone reboots and displays an "Update failed" error message. I uninstalled as many apps as AdAway and XPosed that I think could be tampering with the process, but still I can't install the update.
How can I update to KitKat? (If it isn't obvious by now, I don't follow most of the technicalities of this things with Android. I'm fairly knowledgeable about computers, just not Android. I've read a lot of threads here and still can't figure out how to do this!)
Will I be able to re-root the phone afterwards? Will I be able to unlock it?
Thanks!
unless you have some concerns about warranty, I suggest go ahead and unlock bootlocader via moto website. Then you are free to do as you please, meaning uprade to kk stock, custom rom and root without hassle.

Ok, I did it (and lost everything on the phone in the process). The phone said it was unlocked. The phone is now back to stock, clean 4.1.2. But I still can't update. I get the same "update failed" error message.
What should I do?
Dont panic! haha you will get it done I have no doubt.
First did you factory reset after all was done. Do that and try again
if not, there are other ways , some easier than others but all within your capabilities

Can we get a version for the Moto G?
"Wow apparently this does allow sunshine to s-off and unlock some 4.4.4 Verizon devices, just not our test ones."
I tried weaksauce2 on my brand new Moto G that I bought 2 days ago from the Verizon store and it just failed with an error message saying that the program had unexpectedly stopped. Yes I read the directions saying that the program was for the HTC phones but I decided to try anyway just in case.
Jcase, will the 3.0 version of Sunshine support the Moto G with 4.4.4?
Will Sunshine support the HTC Desire 612?
Verizon has not pushed 5.0 out via OTA for the Moto G - yet - and I'll be continuing to refuse OTA updates until after Sunshine 3 comes out!

The issue was with the version of TWRP that I had installed. 2.8.0.1. Flashed. 0.3 and all is good. Flashify saved the day again.
ART or Dalvik?
Is there any specific reason for one vs the other in KK? With Lolipop it will be a moot point, yes?
Am I supposed to run sunshine before I do a nandroid backup or after?

Do I have to install both of them for using banned funtions by Verizon? such as "add apn", etc.

Hell yea! This worked for me! Thanks for the hard work!
I am now S-Off! Thanks guys!
One question. SuperSU wants to update the su binaries but every time I try it fails. Just wondering if anyone else if having this problem?
opps sorry for double post
Is there anything I can do with soff that I can't with root?
HTC Droid DNA rooted and S-off
About a month ago I got a "new" droid from Veri$on as a warranty replacement. My previous one had S-off and root. I had been putting off installing KitKat (didn't want to lose FoxFi). The replacement was KitKat 4.4.2. Sunshine, and Weaksauce didn't work. Neither did any combination of the other tools. I found that weaksauce had a version 2 this morning and tried again. Lo and behold, it worked! Guys, look in your mailbox, another $25 is coming your way. I don't remember the HBoot version before I S-offed, but after S-off it's showing 1.57 and the build version is 4.09.605.5 if that helps at all. This was a new (probably refurbed) never rooted or S-offed as far as I know. I would assume that during refurb they lay down an entirely new image using JTag to make it like new.
S-off 4.4.4 with weaksauce2 and sunshine after a few tries
I do not know if this will help or just another post but I was successful after about 5 tries (I'm stubborn).
I know the first few tries were with Sunshine (that I tried about 2 months ago) a couple of times then deleted and downloaded Sunshine again. Weaksauce2 was able to get me root but the binary wouldn't update (I know, known issue) but after several tried and even doing full powerdown and powerup I was able to get it to work and purchased right then and there and then got the s-off. I couldn't tell you what made it work but something allowed it to finally work and go through even with binaries not updating, but again it took about 5 or so tries.
Brand new m8 running 4.4.4.
Root and s-off with weaksauce 2 and sunshine.
Now shopping for the right rom's to start crack flashing.

Tell me if I'm viewing this correctly.....if I s-off now with 4.4.4, when lollipop is realeased and I take it, all I will have to do is flash the latest supersu via recovery and I gain root again?

Close. You'll have to flash a custom recovery first. If you were already assuming that, then yes. Just flash superuser again and you should be good to go.
I think I understand....I'm not very familiar with custom recovery (even after reading abunch). Once I flash like CWM will it always be there, even after taking an update? Thank u for all this by the way

[Q] Moving SCH-I535 Verizon S3 from 4.1.2 rooted to 4.4.2 rooted

I'm on a verizon SCH-I535 running android 4.1.2 (baseband I535VRBMF1, kernel 3.0.31-1152558, build jzo54k.i535vrbmf1, hardware version i535.10). I rooted the device a couple years ago, and have rejected OTA updates, ever since I received the 4.1.2 one (in fact, I used a file manager, to rename some files, so I wouldnt get the pop-up telling me there was an OTA update anymore). Everything is, as it was required to be, in order to get root access on 4.1.2, I just followed the instructions I found on xda.
Now that android 4.4.2 is available, and there is an easy root for it, what is the easiest way for me to move from where I am to 4.4.2 rooted? Am I supposed to follow the instructions in the "Reset your phone in order to return to Verizon" sticky? If so, how do I know if my bootloader is 'locked' or 'unlocked'? Alternatively to these instructions I was thinking of doing a "full unroot" with superSU then simply doing an OTA update, but wasnt sure if that would introduce issues.
Finally, in terms of doing a backup, I downloaded an app called "online nandroid" which supposedly saved a backup to my sd card. But my sd card is tiny, and the backup went really quick, so what exactly is it backing up? Is it enough of a backup that if I want to do a full restore back to exactly the state my phone is in now later, I can do that, or do I need a different tool for that?

In order to move to the 4.4.2 update you'll have to unroot, but keep in mind if you do your bootloader will be PERMANENTLY locked, no going back
The backup of stock is normally somewhere between 2-3gb or more, it didn't do the full backup. I highly doubt it's a full backup. Once you take the OTA to 4.4.2 your stuck and there is no going back
Your best bet is to install a custom recovery, cwm, twrp or philz or similar. If you want to take the OTA your free to but once again there's no custom roms after that. No CM or AOSP after you take the OTA

Thank you for your response.
I do not care about custom ROMS, I am ok with the stock android OS, as long as I can get root. If the OTA update permanently locks my bootloader I am ok with that.
That said, I want to ensure I dont have any incidents when I do the OTA update. (that I dont brick my device. or make things more difficult for myself.) It doesnt look like I currently have a custom recovery (I tried to boot into custom recovery but the phone simply boots normally. I can however boot into stock android recovery). Also, my bootloader is currently unlocked.
Given that I dont currently have a custom recovery, and that my bootloader is currently unlocked, will that present any issue if I simply do a full unroot using superSU, and then take the OTA update? I used triangle away earlier today to reset my flash counter to 0 (it was 1 before).

Ok, i unrooted, and tried to take the OTA update, but a quarter of the way through the update, the update fails/stops, and it shows a lying android, with a red exclamation triangle over it; then the phone simply reboots and says "sorry, there was a problem updating your SAMSUNG SCH-I535. No changes were made." I read something about how this could be the case if I froze some stock apps, but how do I check if any stock apps are frozen? I dont remember doing so but its certainly possible.
What course of action do you recommend? It sounds like I will need to go through the process of rerooting again. I've read I can reflash the 4.1.2 stock rom and then do the OTA update, but I dont want to wipe data. The no wipe version is linked to here, but the firmware links there appears to be broken.

After all the reading I've done in order to take the OTA you have to unroot. I don't know the complete process as I am not on any OTA

Even if you dont care about custom ROMs right now you may in the future when there are no updates released for the phone or you want to sell it and could have gotten a higher price with the lower system version. Before you update try some of the ROMs out and see if there are some you like and if you dont like any then update.
That being said I have updated using ODIN and the firmware I got from this site. look around and you will find the stuff you need.
i ended up flashing a 4.1.1 stock no wipe rom i found and after that i could take the ota updates (had to do multiple in a row).
out of curiosity couldn't the devs find a way to unlock the bootloader via some hackery in the future?

Sure it's possible, but unlikely. To put into perspective, I don't believe there has been a bootloader unlock for Verizon Notes 2-4 and Galaxy S4-5 (which would allow one to natively run AOSP without Safestrap) so the likelihood is low.

Help restoring OTA

Hi,
About a year ago I got fed up with Verizon constantly messing with my rooted phone, which I was completely happy with as it was, with their OTA updates. I used some of the guides on here to stop the OTA's and after some trial and error finally got them to stop bugging me. The phone is running Kitkat 4.4.2.
Now a year later I bought a new car and in order for the phone to work with the car it needs to be running at least Lollipop 5.0 but I cannot get the phone to update. I know I used Titanium, the full version, to freeze some of the OTA entries and I tried unfreezing them to no effect. I know I used another program to freeze some of the OTa options but I do not remember what it was. I have also tried doing multiple factory resets and I have tried to update it using Kies. Nothing works. I also used Odin and flashed the stock 4.4.2. Had no effect.
Appreciate any help. I am not that tech savvy but I can usually follow instructions well if anyone can help me out.
Thank you.
If you used Odin to flash an image, whatever you did to freeze the OTA function was completely undone. That's clearly not your problem.
Just follow the instructions in this thread to flash the latest Lollipop image provided, and then root it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s5/general/root-method-og5-ok3-t3290370
