[Q] Overseas Usage - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm moving overseas and I was wondering if my N5 will have any issues. Such as missing frequencies and what not. If so, could I flash new ones?

D821 gets LTE pretty much everywhere except North America. D820 only gets LTE in north america
HSPA and lower works on both pretty much everywhere.
Though, you haven't given specifics so I in turn, can not be specific

So you'll still get 2g, 3g and HSPA+ most likely. You'll just miss out on LTE

There was a thread I read a while back that told ya how to unlock the other LTE bands. You do lose the north America ones. I guess only so.many can be active at once.

Its only a couple of bands. You can't change a d820 into a d821 or vice versa. Just swap a couple to work in China. There is a thread though...

Samsung devices typically are much more restricted. Not sure because of snapdragon whether it is similar. Ask in note 3 forum.

[Q] I9023 on T-MO US Updated

I bought the I9020 at Best Buy when it was first released. The phone was great. When the HTC Sensation came out, I gave my Nexus to the wife and bought it. Big mistake as I can't stand this phone.
Last week I bought the I9023 on 1saleaday and will be getting it Monday the 10th. I have a few questions. From what I have read, I should have no problems using this phone on T-MO US with 3G, correct?
If I don't like the SLCD compared to the SAMOLED, could I make an nandroid on the I9020 running Oxegen and restore it to the I9023 to give that one to the wife?
Update 10/10
I got the phone and I can't be happier. The phone works fine on T-MO's us 3G. Out of the box it it had 2.3.4 and prompted me to update to 2.3.6
The phone looks really good with the SLCD, way better than the Sensations. Although the blacks are nothing like the SAMOLED, the whites are very impressive compared. While comparing the two together, I notice the text on the SAMOLED is just a bit fuzzier. NFC works fine.
I had read somewhere that the back plate from the I9020 would fit, this is not true. Overall, it's great to have a Nexus again. If there is any additional information you would like, please let me know and I will try and provide.
Nandroid no. Looks like it will work with T-Mobile's AWS 3G. If you liked the screen on the Nexus you gave to your wife, and you didn't like the screen on the sensation, you wont like the slcd.

Empirical proof as to why? The i9023 supposedly supports the 1700 band (3G downlink) so why couldn't it possibly work?

Well, I was going off the following info,
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_google_nexus_s_i9023-3910.php

If it doesn't work out I have a 9020t that I'd like to trade for a sensation...

I don't see why it wouldn't work then - it appears to support the bands for both uplink and downlink. AFAIK the only difference between the i9020 and the i9023 is the SLCD in place of the SAMOLED screen.

That 3G information cannot be correct, or else that phone would NOT do 3G on AT&T, which it obviously does. I suspect they copy-pasted the i9020T specs. Lazy bastards
EDIT: this site's info is probably more accurate - http://nettailer.co.uk/products/Mob...s-S-smartphone-WCDMA-UMT?prodid=561041&info=2

The i9023 was sold internationally - the rest of the world almost exclusively operates on the AWS 3G bands (outside of canada). The FCC filing listed it with AWS 3G bands as well. I suspect nettailer.co.uk has the incorrect information.
The i9020a does 3G on AT&T, why do you believe the i9023 does?

Maybe I was mistaken. I thought before i9020a, the people were using i9023 on AT&T in North America. But maybe not.
I also thought AT&T and Europe tended to use the same 3G bands whereas T-Mobile's was different, but again, maybe I was mistaken.
To the OP, I would definitely listen to krohnjw over me!

The i9020a was released in Canada for the Canadian carriers using 850/1900 there and was being imported into the US prior to the AT&T release.
You'll see that for 3G 2100 is really what's used most throughout Europe (where the i9023 was sold).

I want to thank you both for your input. I guess i will have to wait and see on Monday if it will work. To make matters worse, I do see an error on the Samsungs site as they do list the GT-I9023 with a SAMOLED screen which is wrong
PS. kenvan19, I will let you know on Monday, if you are still interested in a trade.

It's not a worst thing though. I got this one for only 100$ off craiglist and it works just fine. It just does not work right with a data, remind me of few years back when 2g was a fastest data service lol. Thanks again for let me know this issue.
AT&T runs on GSM band while Verizon runs on a CDMA network. I'm surprised your SIM even works. What other said is correct though, you are restricted to the slow 2G Edge speeds.

Right it does. But they use different bands in other countries. Our phone isn't capable of using any and all bands. Only certain ones. If somehow these bands were unlocked, then you could get 3g here.

Will nexus 5 work in Europe?

My current phone can't work in Europe which apparently uses a different system than in the US. Will the nexus 5 work in Europe?
If you buy a nexus 5 from the US you cannot get 4G/LTE in Europe. If you buy a nexus 5 from anywhere it is sold through Google play that is not the US/Canada you will get 4G/LTE. 3G works as per normal.

No because LTE uses a different frequency in europe
Yo, Brainiacs. Are you aware that Europe is not a single country ?
There are like dozen different LTE frequencies there.

yop Brainiac, can't you see that all european countries use bands 3, 7 and 20 ?

Is this setting set in stone in the hardware, or will devs be able to hack the phone's radio firmware to get band 3/7/20 support? I don't need CDMA.

Ordering nexus 5 to india from US

I wanted to know if anyone has tried ordering nexus 5 to India from US using shopandship.com or borderlinx or other similar means. If so how much did the total amount come to and how much time it took?
Incase people are wondering how to do it then here is the guide:

No, D821 is only available outside of the US so you'll have to get it from Europe if you want/need the D821 variant

As of now 3g only thanks a lot for ur help. But do u know the safest and cheaper way to ship it to India other than sending it along with someone.
Coz in india 32gb costs around 34k where as if i buy from US it will cost only 25k but i dont have anyone coming to india anytime soon
NO idea, I'm lucky enough to get it from the Play Store. Good luck
My N5 is from the US i.e. D820. Works perfectly.. And for 4G god in future may bless us with that..

AT&T uses a few different LTE bands. 4, 17, and I believe 2 and 5 in some markets. Of those, the 1+1 supports 4 and 17. It's possible you live in an area that AT&T uses 2 and/or 5 primarily, and any signal from 4 and/or 17 is weak or non-existent.
att uses band 17 more than anything, followed by 4. they recently started using band 2 in december, but only in areas that already use band 17.
