[L 5.0.1 ]Enormous battery problem - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im experiencing a huge problem with battery...
First the battery drain is too big to be real 100 to 0 for like an hour of browsing...
What is more is that when the battery gets like 30% the phone sometimes just shuts down like and acts like the battery is fully drained and the only way to turn it back on is to connect it to a charger first and when i turn it on its on 0% battery.
I'm running all stock, no rom, not even unlocked, I sideloaded both 5.0.0 and 5.0.1 updates.
Here is some screenshots, could it be a bad 5.0.1 update?

Have you done a factory reset yet?
What happens if you charge it when its off?

Welcome to the club

It charges normaly, just like I have let the battery die to 0%. Other then that it charges preeeetty fast ... Too much if im not overreacting
Haven't done factory reset....thats the reason for not flashing it, didnt want to lose data..

Well, it could be hardware but best thing to do is rule out.software so best bet would be to factory reset after backing up your data. Maybe even flash back to stock.

I would flash full 5.0.1 if a factory reset doesnt work. If its still the same, then try 4.4.4.

The reason behind not flashing already etc etc is that i dont wanna lose my warranty. That leaves me with factory reset and nothing else for solving it? Should I just copy all my storage to PC or should I use some application for the backup?

Where did you buy it?
Backup with something like carbon and yes, copy your sdcard to pc if you need to keep it.

You'd need to reset the flag then afterwards. Its all covered in the flashing stock guide in general > sticky roll-up. Not saying you should do it, just letting you know. Though after you factory reset i would recommend you probably just contact the company and let them fix it.

I guess I will have to unlock, root and flash my Nexus to see if this will help.
Can u advise me with a stable and low battery drain ROM and Kernel eventually ? I'll need to seach a full guide on unlocking rooting flashing I guess

If it's new, go and get a replacement. If it's not you may change your battery. It does not look like a wakelock or another issue. It looks like a hardware issue much more.

Actually, I do have the same problem as OP. I'm thinking of going back to 4.4.4.

Facebook app is draining a lot, Disable Service and disable the fitness services within Google Play Service, and disable unneeded syncs.

I had the same problem with mine, I used the nexus root toolkit to get back to 4.4.4 and it fixed my battery issue completely, I'm now at 23hours with 36 percent left. On 5.0 it lasted about 8 hours if I didn't use it, good luck.

Flashed Cyanogenmod 11 latest for hammerhead, problem persist... I'll do some more testing and If I cant get it right I guess I will send it back for repair after reseting the flag...
If anybody has any ideas or same problem, share info

I'm having the exact same problem...
I updated to 5.0 when the OTA was sent out OTA but then sideloaded 5.0.1 two weeks ago.
Since then I've been experiencing the same shut downs where the phone thinks the battery is dead. If I leave the phone off for a minute or two, restart it and then leave it for a few hours, the battery level slowly increases back up to what it actually is.
I'm guessing it's a software issue but I'm losing patience waiting for 5.1 to cure it.
I'm now thinking of downgrading back to 4.4.4 till 5.2 comes out. Very frustrating!

What voltage is actually at when this happens? You guys should track voltagr at full charge, and empty when this happens.

The new baseband / modem firmware from lollipop caused massive drains for me. You may want to flash 4.4 baseband.

When the phone dies due to battery drain it causes data loss

Hi,
Whenever my phone dies due to battery drain I lose contact information, texts and application settings and other settings.
It has been happening off late. It was fine some months back.
I am on 2.3.5 and my phone is still under warranty. Is there anything I can do to prevent this?
Never heard of anything like that before. Anyway try flashing a new firmware 2.3.6. GB and give it a shot.. If the issue still persists, a service Centre is the best option..
Try simple things to minimise battery drain like alway turn off wifi, 2g, 3g. Use it only when its required. Other time turn it off. Flash xxkpq firmware & use UC kernel. Also tweaks & governers will help u alot. Also sync of mail do it manually. Auto sync always take ur battery like hell.

Dude the problem here is the loss of data after (maybe) reboot.. Battery drain is not the issue..
So the best way to check if it is a hardware issue or not is to flash a new firmware.. No mods required...
And she's obviously new here so let's keep it simple.. Flash guides and the links to download the required roms in the stickies section..
I read recently that turning off journaling can cause data corruption/loss. are you running stock, or customized? some customized roms turn off journaling for better performance...
in addition, for better apparent performance, some roms also increase read ahead/write ahead or something like that. if you were doing something when your phone dies (and is unable to shutdown properly because you pushed it to the max), it can die in the middle of reading or writing, and especially in the case of writing, likely will cause data corruption/loss.
so, once again, let us know if you're running stock or custom, and why you insist on killing the battery while using the phone instead of shutting it of at 1% or 2% to prevent this from happening anymore

But I can't keep preventing my battery to run out. Why should a battery drain erase data? Obviously the problem is worse than just battery draining.

I don't wait for the battery to drain. When my battery is a little less than half at night, I wake up to find my phone turned off with the battery run out. And all of the mentioned data erased.
I have stock rom. Should I just update my fw to 2.3.6 and see?

A likely scenario here, which also occurred to me was that when kept overnight, the phone restarts automatically and gets into a boot loop (stuck at the samsung logo, and reboots over and over) thus draining the battery of whatever charge is left. And then once you switch it back on all personal data is erased, including settings, except installed apps.
What firmware are you using? This is surprisingly a very common issue nowadays, happens to many on GB, I have not heard of this happening on froyo as yet, but you never know! I myself have given in my handset for a motherboard replacement due to this!
So the issue might not be battery drain, just keep it unattended for a while and you will see its behavior! (Or wake up in the middle of the night! )

Well till now all those facing the problem couldn't solve it even with multiple wipes/firmware installs, so best bet is the service center, insist on a MB replacement on the 2nd visit, because the 1st time they will just do a firmware flash.
Make sure you are on Indian firmware DDKP1/KP2 with no trace of root including superuser and CWM.

your issue is not a loss of data due to battery dying, it's due to a hardware malfunction. take it to sammy!
same problem with me.. i heard its from the motherboard and internal memory.. i was using xxkpm then... At night i turn on wifi to update my apps on market.. its good, everything was updated, but tomorrow morning when i woke up i found my phone dead, so i charge it and when i open it, i was surprise to see that its asking me to pick a language again.. and yeah, all my contacts are gone, the messages, and the settings.. I thought its because of some apps that is update.. so i uninstall all my apps and then factory reset. but still same things happen everytime my phone is idle for awhile.. i also tried to flash xxkpq but same thing happens.. i still have warranty but is it ok if i go to samsung center with XXKPQ? or should i flash again to a lower version like 2.2.1??

Strange Issues with my Infuse

I've never had any major problems with my Infuse since I got it.
The battery is getting weaker but I bought a 2600Mah USB Backup Battery and that gives me another 7-8 hours for about 13-14 hours of use.
To make a long story short, I unlocked for use in Mexico City on TelCel and had some issues, so I returned the phone back to stock, unrooted.
Since that point however, while it would occasionally freeze before, its become a daily thing now and really bothersome because I can't even stop audio from playing via bluetooth. The touch screen becomes unresponsive and only a soft reboot or a hard reboot (removing the battery) returns the phone to a useful state.
It seems I have to do is every couple of hours now though, so I am posting here to get some suggestion on how to fix it.
Its been two years already since I got it so I am eligible for a new phone, but this one continues to work well besides this issue.
Thanks

I mentioned that in the post, I did it while in Mexico City. It worked fine until this week, late last week. The battery only gives me about 5 hours now with just 32% audio playback and about 10% web access.
I guess I'll order a Anker battery from Amazon.
I rooted the phone again last night but before I did that, the phone became unresponsive three times in an hour. Which microSD card are you talking about? I just bought a 32GB Class 6 card and that works fine, I play all my audio from it, no problems.
If you mean the internal microSD card, that could be possible. I assume I can crack open the phone and replace this easily?
I should mention it never does that while plugged into a power source, so maybe this is all battery related.
Possible Fix...
When I had to hard reboot the phone again this afternoon, a little forced closed window came up for TwLauncher.
After rebooting the phone I looking at Titanium Backup and cleared the cashe from TwLauncher and that seems to have solved the problem.
Somebody on here mentioned that after installing a ROM they had the same problem, was worth a try.
I will report back if the issue returns.

My personal beliefs are that TB is good for causing a lot of problems.I used to use it,even bought pro,but even not restoring data when restoring apps I seamed to develop odd quirks or problems on about any ROM. Since not using it have much fewer problems.I am sure many people love it and think it's great, just thought I would give my $0.02
if your battery holds a charge...that is, it's letting you run the phone for more than several hours, it's unlikely to be the battery.
lags are usually due to apps misbehaving, media scan, wakelocks and wifi bugs...there are some others.
a factory reset ...complete reset..complete stock..will let you know if you have hardware of software issues.

Thus far, that issue has not returned. Yes the battery holds a charge, but last only about 5-6 hours now, not 7-8 hours.
It seems it was a minor software issue. I did a factory reset, you keep missing that.
I did it in Mexico City (7 days ago).... Since that point and returning to the US, I have put my apps back on the phone. I had already updated to Gingerbread and it just reset to that.
I won't know more until I am out and about with my phone. I will be watching various auto racing events and don't plan on leaving the house this weekend.

No problem, I've never had a problem with TB. I updated the rom to a rooted version of the AT&T Gingerbread release so I could even use it... lol
The phone was rooted for Froyo, I downloaded the AT&T Gingerbread from Samsung via Kies when it was released and it remained rooted.
But resetting it back to stock, TB didn't work until I put the rooted rom on the phone.

Exactly...you had to use TB or another restore. If you used TB on froyo and restored on GB or vice versa, you may run into issues.
and ...sigh... I did not miss the fact that you stated that you had reset the phone. I just had doubts that you understood what I was trying to say...from inside the phone..under settings/privacy..there is a reset option. make sure everything you wanted is already backed up. reset it..then put it into download mode and use one of the odin or heimdall package and flash it back to complete stock...run it stock and dont back up anything. download only apps from the play store or side load the apps if you had the apk's.
check the battery use to see if you have wake locks or android OS or android system eating up for battery..then you will know

Well like this, I will not go into the details but somebody else put Swipe Lock on the phone and of course I didn't know what he put into the phone. I was trying to resolve data issue on TelCel.
I had to do a hard reset outside of the operating system. Since the ROM was already upgraded to Gingerbread but unrooted, it went back to its unrooted state meaning I couldn't use TB.
So I re-downloaded apps from my memory. All of them are free so it wasn't an issue, just time consuming.

See above.
I used download mode to get out of Swipe Lock. I never used Swipe Lock, a-hole wanted to charge me 120 pesos ($7) to wipe it and put it back to stock, I wasn't going to do it, I know enough about Android phones to do it myself.
Oh well, lesson learned, I believe wiping the cashe from TwLauncher has solved the problem.
I did re-install all the apps from the store. I wasn't able to use TB until Thurs night (5/16). I noticed the errors Friday afternoon, wipe the cashe and no issues since.

Issues after 4.4.3 update

Hello guys
I just finished updating my rooted Nexus 5 to 4.4.3 and it went fine but I immidiately noticed some "problems" when I turned it on. The thing is that my touch screen is not as responsive as before 4.4.3 update. On 4.4.2 scrolling was flowy and smooth like on ice, but on 4.4.3 I got big delay (half cm of emptiness) on scrolling through gesture (apps, home or anything..) and, even worse, when I'm scrolling down my Contacts list it dials randomly due to a lagging. Is there any calibration to be done or that's it?

It doesn't sound normal. Mine is working just as smooth as it was on 4.4.2. Have you tried wiping the phone? Do a factory reset and see.

my battery went from 19% to 0 over night.... in airplane mode. previously, it would only use 3-4% overnight, esp with everything turned off. almost woke up late
also, im having a hard time answering phone calls. i slide to answer, it doesnt answer but its still ringing
I noticed that there is a bunch of different problems reported last two days and I have decided to wait for Google's response on all of this mess. But I must say that my phone is working better now and somehow it heals itself )) Maybe this update is about implementing some organic components

I also got a big issue on 4.4.3. since the update i get sponataeuos signal dropouts especially when i travel by bus or train.
It seams the radio has problems by logging out at one cell and switch to an other cell. Also the reception/signal is very weak.
Someone noticed the same? or does anybody has a tip?
thanks in advance :good:

For battery drain, install an app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.asksven.betterbatterystats (it's free demo version is available on XDA) or https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gsamlabs.bbm
Observe your device for one day after complete charge (90+) and use it.
Using that app, you'll observe the apps/wakelocks which are causing unnecessary battery drain. Eliminate them or post screenshots here so that we can help you to solve battery drain issue.

First thing to do if something is broken after an OTA is factory reset to see if it is an OS bug or whether you have incompatible data and settings.
It sounds like it would be a pain to do, but you can easily backup with helium nowadays so it needn't be

GPS not Working
Has anyone else noticed if their GPS is working or not? I was trying to use mine last night and I can see that GPS connects and it brings up the map but then never navigates or even moves from the starting point on the map. Can someone let me know if this is a new problem??? I flashed the N5_4.4.3.zip file that someone pointed me to, as I had asked for a flashable zip file to update to 4.4.3 as I still have not gotten an ota notification from T-Mobile:confused
i have a question also,
what if i like the current mono toned google dialer?
when i get this update & it updates the dialer, is it possible to un-install the dialer update to revert back to the older dialer?

[Q] Volume decrease and worse battery life after Lollipop update!

So is it me or did the volume decrease with lollipop?
On KitKat i somehow got the feeling that the overall sound volume is much higher, especially while listening to music over the speakers.
Also my batterie life got really worse with lollipop, but i wont judge now since the OTA came in two days ago.
Still, somehow i miss KitKat already and find myself looking for a downgrade. I'm on the Z3.
I would be glad, if you tell me your thoughts on that one.
I just clean flashed 5.0.2 and got a device which has way better batteries now than after an OTA update. Try that.
After clean flashing, my battery life has increased soooooooo much it's insane I actually don't understand how it.can be so good

I've been on stock rom now (updated using pc companion on the same day lollipop came to our devices). My battery life gives me max 4 hours of screen on time with moderate usage.
So my question is, did you just do a simply factory reset through the settings menu or did you flash it as a rom?
I'm just curious as I've lately noticed that by the time my phone goes from 100% to 85% I do only have 35minutes of screen on time. On my lg g2 I could go from 100% to 90% and have 1 hour screen on time...
Guess I should have done a factory reset long time ago... I'm about to root my phone and flash cm12.1 anyway, but wanted to get someone who clean flashed incase I want to go back in future.
@Sindroid Hi my fellow Bergenser. I'm also from Bergen but stuck in Sweden, my wife is Swedish (got caught in the Swedish trap.) How did you clean flash after the OTA? just a standars factory reset? did you wipe the internal storage too? e.g camera pictures and media etc?

No, a factory wipe won´t do justice. That will just wipe your phone clean and the OS will remain the same.
I am talking about Flashing a stock FTF.
You need D6603_23.1.A.0.690_Customized_NCB.ftf
And you need Flashtool to flash it..
Back up what you can that is internally on your phone. IF you have File Commander you just use that to move all stuff from Internal to SD.. Your SD Card will remain unharmed during flashing process but you could remove it during flashing to be on the safe side.

I've been on stock rom now (updated using pc companion on the same day lollipop came to our devices). My battery life gives me max 4 hours of screen on time with moderate usage.
So my question is, did you just do a simply factory reset through the settings menu or did you flash it as a rom?

I downloaded the OTA, made it a flashable zip, wiped thru custom recovery then flashed.
Since my last post I haven't charged battery: current stats

How did you manage to have that screen on time? Are there any tips you can provide us, please?
I noticed a weaker battery life directly after upgrade (by ftf without wiping data) but it went back to normal a couple of days later... I guess just patience is needed.

Yes, but have you seen @shakerist screen on time? 12h is too much! I wanna know his secret!
Yeah, noted that...
Never paid too much attention on screen time. I get about 1 1/2 days with normal business use (mostly phone, mail and web) which is pretty good.

Even better if you ask me.

Can you provide us what tweaks/apps/modules/configs you are using? Because I've checked many Z3 users and none of them can replicate this on-time screen. We get usually between 5-7h on-time screen with 24h+ battery usage.

It may be the trick, but not the tweak

New update

There was a new update today. The new version is N920VVRS2BPF2. Not sure what changed though.
I wouldn't download this yet guys/girls because it's looking like this is a security patch to stop us from downgrading from MM to Lollipop!! Once this has been accepted you can't even factory reset or it will render the phone useless!!
I don't know why people have an issue with Marshmallow. Runs flawlessly, I'm usually sitting at 1880MB of free space of RAM, no stuttering, looks and feels cleaner.

Not everyone's phone is the same that's why. Some people like Lollipop over Marshmallow and depending on how you use it and what apps you have on there are also a determining factor in how the rom runs.
Took this update earlier this morning, phone runs like a dream on mm. Starting to notice some slight slowdown with battery saver on. Might be time for a full wipe and reinstall. I did one with the first mm update but there's been like three now since then.

Good luck! Someone else who tried to do a factory reset and wipe caused the phone to get stuck and so far he hasn't been able to do anything at all to fix it!!
Yikes guess I'll be holding off then

I accidently hit the install for this update. Ever since MM my battery life, screen on time, has been horrible (2.5-3.5 hours MAX). I've factory reset, wiped cache, tried the package disabler with extreme settings and it still is not right. I was thinking about going back to lollipop but if this update froze that I may dump this phone and look for another. that I can root.

That sucks dude!! I've figured out that if you factory reset *before* you accept any updates, the battery and phone will work much better! I'm not sure what you can do at this point except maybe try to Odin the stock Lollipop rom and see if it works cause maybe the other guy's phone was just a fluke! You have to enable OEM unlock first and enable adb in developer settings.

I'm on MM and did a reset last week. I could not sign in to the phone using my Google account for 24 hrs.
If you do a Google search you can find out about this new "security feature".
Also you can reboot the phone by holding down the volume down, then home, then power in that sequence for 10 seconds.

When did they start doing that 24 hour hold?

They've been doing it for quite a while.. It's supposed to be a security guard against people stealing your phone and factory resetting it immediately so they can use it. The simple way to stop this is to activate developer mode and enable OEM unlock and USB debugging! Most people who don't bother to read nothing should be happy that it's only 24 hours instead of the 72 (3 days) that it used to be! All they need to do is research before doing anything to their phones.

So it just buys you time if your phone is stolen. Fine right do what exactly I would track it.. Or remote wipe it.. Just not seeing the benefit

Yeah it basically buys you time to track it or wipe the phone and lock it down. It also gives you time to change your password just in case. If people don't want it they can disable it as I said and you can enable it again later if you choose to. I don't see how it's going to hurt anyone so long as they read and learn about their phone before doing anything to it.

What? I've been using Android phones with Verizon for as long as there has been such a thing...and I've never waited three days after a reset or one day either. Personal experience here or rumor?

Personal experience several times! Either it's on or off and the carrier can even hide the option so you don't even know it's there. Personally I think it doesn't happen when you're somewhere you normally use your phone but if you go to say another state it's going to know and activate it.
I've reset an lg g2 tons of times flashing it, s4 multiple times and my note 5 twice and I've never had to wait ever. Could it be because I use 2 step authentication?

Stupid update has screen time like 6th on my list of battery consumption. Thanks for the security update Verizon. Google services seems to be my main drain. Then media server. Nothing like ruining my great battery life.

This is totally false. I just upgraded my wife's Note 5 and then downgraded back to KK. All that is required is a factory data reset after the downgrade. You can do this by holding down the volume up, home and power buttons for 10 seconds. The phone will reboot into recovery and then you can reset and be on your way. Just keep your Google account and password handy if needed.
