Failed text messages appear only after phone restart - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I run into an intermittent problem where I see some 'messages not sent' errors after restarting my phone. However, I clearly recall that the messages looked like they were sent fine when I had composed them and hit send.
I'm on T-Mobile if that makes any difference, using the Moto G LTE.
Any ideas if there's a way for me to catch these failed messages sooner rather than later? Perhaps I should use Hangouts to as my default Messaging app? Maybe Lollipop will improve this when it arrives in an OTA update? Anyone else have this problem too?

I have similar problem, except that I cannot send texts at all. Using any app. Receiving is fine. Happened after I updated to 4.4.4 a few weeks ago. I'm using dual sim version actually, I'm hoping your solution (if any) can be applied to me.

[Q] Text messages not being received

Seems like I've been having this problem regularly since I rooted/installed Fission ROM. I even SBF'ed back to original, but it didn't seem to fix my issue. I regularly have to reboot my phone to receive text messages.
I can't seem to find any rhyme or reason to it. I've tried re-programming my phone, but every time it attempts to reprogram, it makes a weird noise and reboots.
Am I experiencing a hardware problem, possibly? With the radio?
Honestly no idea where to go from here, but inability to receive text messages = huge problem.
Are you using it on Verizon or on a non-Verizon GSM/HSPA network?
I've got the same issue using my milestone1 but milestone2 has more ram, so that problem should'nt appear at this device.
I believe I'm on the Verizon network, I'm using it in places I've always had good coverage.
Update: I re-installed Fission 2.4.3 I had from backup and installed Handcent SMS. So far, so good. I haven't appeared to miss any text messages since then.
Still, it's a very odd situation. Hoping Gingerbread gives some more stability, though I'm not sure why it would matter.
This has happened to me on TMOUS and to a friend as well...I have SGII she has MyTouch 4g...after reboot, a flood of undelivered texts comes in...all with the same time so doesn't help when trying to see when originally sent.
I'm rooted/custom rom and she's bone stock...wondering if its a network issue or android problem

[Q] Cant receive mms?

has anyone got the message "cant not receive pictures, balance too low" well i cant believe i got this and i am on the $55 plan.. this shouldnt be possible. does anyone know how to fix it.?
Have you tried to reactive the phone. I haven't ever had this show up, so I am just W.A.G-ing it here.
It sounds like a problem from VM's side... although I have poked around their MMS.apk and it's hard-coded into the software. So possibly not. Although VM is the first group I would blame.
Second might be wifi. If you have wifi on, disable it, get your 3G working, and try receiving again...
I have had this happen to me a few times, it is a glitch in VM's system. I usually get the message with in a few hours after the error message, it has however taken as long as a week to a month in some cases. My suggestion to you is if it happens again you could try calling VM asap. Personally I just ask whoever it is that sent the message to email me it
SkiZophr3nic~
I have issues receiving MMS as well. I don't get the balance too low message, instead I have to use the stock messenger app rather than handcent (only mostly default settings). Haven't tried tweaking handcent yet to resolve though. If you have handcent try the stock, if the problem exists stock try handcent maybe.
Well I can receive them now. But when I posted this question I didn't take the time to wait it out. It was the least of my concerns. Lol I installed miui 10/30 on triumph. And my mms was and still is working at the moment

[Q] Delayed push notifications - anyone else having this issue?

I previously had a Samsung Galaxy S3 that ran Android 4.1.2. Push notifications would come through pretty much instantly.
Now that I have my Nexus 5, I'm noticing that push notificiations are delayed. For example, I might receive an email on my PC saying that someone has posted on my Facebook timeline, but a notification doesn't pop up on my phone for 10-15 minutes later. Sometimes I get no notifications for a while because they're delayed, then the notification sound on my phone will go off 3 or 4 times in a row as a bunch of notifications from different apps have all arrived at once.
Also, sometimes I got no notification at all. For instance, I sold an item on eBay and usually I would get a notification that it has sold. On this particular occasion, no notification appeared. The same has happened with Facebook. Sometimes I will go to Facebook and find that a friend has written on my timeline, yet I didn't receive a notification about it on the phone.
I Googled this issue and found it was a problem that plagued the Nexus 4, so I'm wondering if it also affects the Nexus 5 too. Does anyone else have this issue with the Nexus 5? Is there any fix for it?
I get this too, but not very often. Most of the time I find my phone gets notifications before my PC or other phone does. But there are occasions, particularly when I'm not on WiFi, when I either get delayed notifications, or I won't get them at all, until I reconnect to WiFi.
It's been happening to me, including when I was running totally stock w/ locked bootloader. I'm on Sprint. Not sure if it's a data issue or phone issue.
Turning off wifi optimization solved my delayed corporate email (outlook) notification.
Thanks for the replies.
I'm having this issue while connected to Wi-Fi, although I haven't tested to see if the issue occurs via my mobile network as well. I have tried 2 factory resets, but that didn't fix it.
It's almost like, when the screen is off and the phone sleeps, it loses the ability to receive push notifications, but then after a while it suddenly regains it and that causes a bunch of notifications to arrive at once.
I've contacted Google support about it, so I'll see what they say.

Any update on this? What did they say? I have the same problem and it's driving me crazy.. I came from GS3 and notifications were instantaneous... on this one I have to open lets say Whatsapp every other minute to check if someone sent me a message... and even sometimes I open the app and it takes some time for the internet to "wake up" and finally refresh the app... it sucks... I would return my phone if this can't be fixed easily..
So any update or solution on this would be gratly appreciated. Thanks

Google ended up offering me a replacement phone, but that didn't go too well. The new phone they sent wouldn't connect to my Wi-Fi network, so I contacted them to return it but they told me I had to return my original phone, get another replacement, and only then could I return the second one. Obviously, each time they sent out a phone they were putting holds on my credit card for £xxx so in the end I phoned up and complained. To cut a long story short, I still have the original phone and I haven't decided what to do yet.

Interesting, I have just turned this off on mine too to see.
I only get delays when I am connected to my home wifi (2.4 or 5GHz). Maybe it is because I only have a 4mb ADSL connection ...
I will check tonight if that fixes it and/or also try the PNF app.
any update or fix on this yet? this is driving me mad, every time I get a notification on twitter or my email my idol picks it up first and my phone gets it 8-9 minutes later even if I'm using it at that moment, anybody else get the delay even while using the device?
All of a sudden I have started facing this problem since the past few days
Yeah..same here

I am using Moto g and I think its an issue with KitKat rather than with the hardware or the network. My push notifications are being delayed and that wasnt the case with JB 4.2 on my earlier phones.
Very frustrating
I've not been getting google hangouts messages until 20-30 mins later. sometimes i never get a notification, but if i check hangouts i see a new message. Another times i only get the message on the computer, but never on the phone. if i go and clear the app data new messages show up
My push notifications were coming through very quickly up until 2 weeks ago. I have not changed devices, carriers, or installed any new apps. One day they were coming through fine, now they are delayed by up to 30 minutes. My phone has not installed any OS updates either.
I have factory reset my phone, once restoring from cloud, the other not restoring at all and setting up the phone from scratch. This is really irritating. It does it on mobile networks or wifi.
Moto G is frustrating
It's frustrating.
I searched google without obtaining a solution. Moto G and sometimes I get delayed notifications and not others.
Facebook does not even make the notifications. In Whatsapp I have to open it every 2 minutes to see if someone has written. What not to do. I'm bored with this phone.
No solution or google and motorola solve it. Cursed kitkat!
Anything new? This problem is old and comes from the Nexus 4. I really am very sad about it, not PNF solving this.
I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure this out. It definitely started after i upgraded my s2 to kitkat rom back in december. At first i thought it had to do with the PM sleep modes but none of them make a bit of difference. Ive goggled it to death and this thread is the only one ive found.
Currently im going to try the suggestion on the first page to turn off wifi optimization as my phone only does this on wifi. when i use mobile data everything works as expected
EDIT: WIFI optimization makes no difference
Push Notifications
I have faced this problem on both my S4 and S5 on sprint. I think it has to do with sprint closing open tcp connections prematurely, which causes push notifications to fail.
Running the app Root-Push Notifications Fixer, or Unrooted version has worked for me. The root version seems to be more reliable.

Hey man I'm just wondering, does your problem persist on Wi-Fi and mobile data? I have a thread over in i777 thread about this issue. Here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2717998

Hangouts MMS Issue - Resolution?

I have read another thread on here with people having the issue of VERY delayed MMS using Hangouts. Just wondering if there is a definitive resolution to this yet, or if anyone even knows what the root cause is? I'm guessing its not the app in and of itself, otherwise one would think it would happen on every device.
Wonder if manually entering an APN would help.
Just looking for ideas...
I will say this. I tested using the stock Messaging app, and everything seems to work as quickly as expected. I love using Hangouts, but perhaps until a proper fix is found, I just need to use the native stock app
I'm also having SMS/MMS issues using hangouts with this phone, seems like even regular SMS messages sometimes take up to 5 minutes to send, and usually send 2 or 3 of the same message, and I'll receive duplicate messages back. It's strange, i had zero problems with hangouts on the previous HTC One using hangouts, hopefully an update or something fixes it.
I'm having no issues

Hmmm.. SMS works flawlessly, but if I try to send to multiple recipients or send a picture, it may take a good five minutes or more. And if you delete the picture, it just pops back up later.
Stock works fine, I just want it all in one
I have no problems with regular SMS with Hangouts. MMS is slow. Think every MMS I've received had to retry before I got it.
This happened when Hangouts was first released when using on the HTC One M7. We're probably going to have to wait for an update from Google before it's fixed.

[Q] Moto G Problems with Messaging after 4.4.3 Update

My dad's phone got the 4.4.3 update yesterday. All of a sudden, his messaging (Hangouts) stopped working correctly. Sometimes, when he tried to send a text, Hangouts would just crash. He could still receive messages without a problem, but he was unable to send them. I thought it might just have something to with the bad weather/power outages because my Nexus 5 was having some problems sending messages (but my Hangouts wasn't crashing). But more recently, I have not had any problems, but now Hangouts crashes every time without fail on his Moto G. I tried using different SMS apps, but they all crashed when I tried to send messages, too (but receiving is fine). I've also restarted the phone, toggled airplane mode, removed and replaced the SIM, reverted Hangouts to its original, and quick booted and erased the phone's cache all to no avail. Could this problem have been caused by the update? Is the phone crapping out? Is it a carrier problem? Something else? Advice?

Same here with wife's phone. She makes me search for a fix. Who is your carrier? Hers is Straight talk. She just can't send text. Picture sending/receiving and incoming texts work ok.
At least we're not the only ones! Ours is T-Mobile. I haven't tried sending data messages. I'll have to try...
Update: MMS works fine. Just sent a picture to myself.

for all, have you try to update your hangouts after updating to 4.3.3 ?
Hangouts updated and crashing as well. I tried several different messaging apps with the same result
Have you tried disabling the messaging app and also clearing the data and cache for handouts?
Try this one: Settings > Apps > All > Reset preferences.

Are you guys sure the Messaging app was fully disabled after the update? Also, the only app default for Hangouts is to be set as the default messenger. Perhaps going into settings and setting it as the default messenger would do the same as reset app preferences without resetting all your other defaults.
It didn't make any difference for me. I couldn't send text messages no matter what app was default.

After messing with this some more, it seems the issue is if you disable the Messaging app, this behavior exists. If you keep it enabled, then Hangouts will work just fine. This is a pretty bad bug imho.

Im on 4.4.4 and can even seem to disable the messaging app on my moto g.
So this issue exist on the Moto X 4.4.4. Had Messenger disabled while on 4.4.2 and used Hangouts (past and current version) with no problems. After update to 4.4.4 problem started, but solved with the known solution of re-enabling/re-installing the Messenger app. The problem also exists if Messenger is uninstalled.
My question is does anyone know what is causing this issue? Is it a change in the Messenger app, Hangouts (unlikely), or the core OS (seems most likely to me).
Just curious more than anything, but I would like to remove the Messenger app if possible.
