[Q] Camera quality/alternative. - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone else find the Z3 front camera to be really grainy when used? I feel like my S3 took better front facing shots. While I've also noticed similar issues with the back camera producing some ordinary quality photos as well, particularly when using the auto mode. I've tinkered with the manual mode and that has resulted in some better quality snaps, but I'm feeling a little underwhelmed overall with what I'm seeing.
There's so many alternative on the play store that I'm unsure what worth checking out, and what's not? Any recommendations? As I presume there are some here who are using non-stock camera apps.

Moto G poor camera? Any other issues?

I've read mixed reviews regarding the Moto G's camera, some say it's pretty good, others describe it as dire and has trouble focusing.
What are your experiences and have you tried any other camera apps? Can different software overcome the problems? And even add features, such as white balance settings? I use Pro Capture sometimes on my N5, simply because the standard camera app has a 16:9 viewfinder when it shoots 4:3 pictures and that annoys me no end...
My friend has just ordered this phone based on my recommendation (there is no other phone in her price range that I would even consider, frankly), and I want to make sure her experience is a great one! This will be her first ever smartphone.
Also, does the phone have any other minor niggles which I can resolve in advance for her, by changing settings or using different apps? I'm already considering installing Opera as her main browser rather than ram-hog Chrome.
Edit: This phone will not be rooted, I'm not opening that can of worms for her just yet, unless I'm asked.
Moto Camera app itself is pretty good with simplest settings, I wouldnt recommend using any other camera apps. It has both 16:9 and 4:3 viewfinder options. I didn't have any "focus" issue and might happen sometimes when there is hardly any lighting. Chrome actually works good in this phone but if she has no need for syncing desktop bookmarks and other things, stock aosp browser (can be installed from play store) works much faster than any other browser.

I love the AOSP browser but too many things quit working after Jellybean for me to continue using it. I miss AOSP browser every day though, not least of all text reflow and the speed. Dumping the ability to implement text reflow (not only in Chrome but also every app that relies on the Webview class, such as GMail) was a **** move by Google. Hate them for that.
Glad to hear that the camera is going to do ok with not much messing with settings, my friend really just needs a point and shoot that will capture stuff with minimum hassle. I'll see how she gets on with it then.
For me the camera sucks, i got some purple tint with flash in my pics :S

Is that not a fault? Thought about taking it back and exchanging it?

Yup, that would def. be a major faulty worthy of free replacement or repair and even easy to prove.
Is it not annoying that the focus feature is not launched by default, and you have to go to the settings wheel every time that you want to take a picture with something in focus? This is another reason I'm thinking about installing a third party camera app for my friend, when the phone arrives.

Not enough RAM
The camera isn't that bad. I've had some good shots from it.
But the lack of RAM is the biggest issue for me, especially when using Chrome. When browsing I often see all other apps killed off, including music playback, which is very frustrating. Basically I cannot use Chrome and Google Play Music together for long.
Also, if I'm casting something to my Chromecast then using Chrome will often kill off the Chromecast notification in the status bar.
And it isn't just Chrome. Yesterday I had RunKeeper tracking a long walk with the family and when I tried using the camera to take some photos along the way it forced RunKeeper to close so I lost my route mapping.
1GB of RAM just isn't enough for me sadly and I am looking to switch to a different device. I am saving for either a Moto X or a Nexus 5.
I understand that problem well - my last phone before my N5 was a Galaxy S3, and the multitasking was abysmal. It was a lot better with an AOSP ROM though, and I was hoping that 1GB RAM on a nice clean (almost) stock build of Android would perform well enough for my friend. There really isn't much alternative in this price range to be fair. Sad to hear about Runkeeper, she's into running in a big way and that's almost certain to be one of the first apps she downloads...

It's an nice nippy device, beautiful screen. Just the camera seems to bu a lot of people.
If you update the camera app through the play store and use HDR then the pictures are good.
There seem to be some problems using the flash, but on mine I haven't had this problem. Though,
what I find using the flash is that it doesn't always(mostly) lite's up correctly. Leaving mostly
dark pictures. I am pretty sure with the correct software it would function just fine.
We should be able to activate the flash manually then start the camera. Could be done with an hack.
Someone on the net suggested to update to the correct radio if you have an custom rom and purple shine. Don't know if that is true. But it couldn't hurt to try.
In any case, not using HDR gives horrible pictures for sure. Check out the pictures thread
on the the moto g forum for examples there above acceptable. And check 'motorola' in the play store.
edit; you also can checkout CameraMX.
Camera issues resolved.
I had a bit trouble with camera but not anymore. You simply change the picture to 4:3 and most importantly control focus and exposure by yourself ( because in low light camera doesn't take good pics at all). You can keep HDR and flash on auto mode.
You can even try AOSP camera ( install it manually without flashing) but I would recommend to stick to stock camera.
Bad call quality(to low volume)
I don`t care about camera, or RAM, they are good enough for me. Bad low volume in earpiece, that **** is killing me. This is my best phone overall i owned, but sound quality(in call volume) is the worst. Does anyone alse also have that problem? I`m thinking about selling Moto G, just because of this issue.

Z3 camera compared to Z1?

I currently have the Z1s and love the camera, I'm just curious what people think of the camera compared to the Z1. I'm wondering what improvements people see and if it's worth the upgrade? I use the camera a lot and consider it a Big feature, if it isn't that much better then I'll hold off for the Z4.
Any opinions are appreciated.

Z1 to Z3 can be good
actually i upgrade Z1 to Z2
everything is better after Z2; display, sound, camera performance battery and ..........
:good:
My Z3 takes nice pictures, however i find that the software is a bit slow when taking pictures. Camera heats up after long use. Sometimes you get blurry pictures, but i guess it is the same for most camera phones.
I've found that pictures on 20mp manual come out really nicely, although anything on Superior Auto is horrendous.
I had the Z1, and I think the manual pics on the Z3 are much better than pictures on the Z1. Not sure that will be good enough for you though as you can't do any modes or HDR on 20mp.
What settings do you use on manual?

Which camera app is the best?!

Hi everyone!
This is something that has been bothering me (well, the only thing) regarding Mokee rom.
I don't like its camera app. I prefer miui 's camera app but I donĀ“t want to go back to miui just because of the camera software as I'm loving all the rest in Mokee....
So, is there any really good camera app that does moreless the same job of miui's camera app? The one in Mokee is just so limited... and if you breed meanwhile you just can't take a nice picture, specially at night... I really have to stop breathing to take a nice pic at night with mokee's camera...
Which camera software do you recommend me to use? I tried several from playstore but none gave me the results of miui's camera.
Many thanks in advance
I'm currently using the cost free variant of HD Camera Ultra. I like its features.
I too am curious as to what other (preferably cost free) camera apps other Xiaomi Mi 4c users may be using.

I looked over and over and finally I found something that impressed me... Try searching for "DSLR camera". I downloaded the PRO version from Aptoide.
Finally I have a real camera... It's just wonderful.
I also tested HD camera ultra and didn't quite liked it also but this DSLR camera is just perfect for me.
Well thanks for the feedback anyway
Two other cost free camera apps

Glad to read you found an app that you like. There is a DSL Camera on Google Play Store (by Geeky Devs Studio) and I assume that is the 'pay' app you are referring to.
wrt cost free applications, there is also
LG Camera on Google Play Store (by RubberBigPepper). I played with it briefly and it provides a bit more control over one's camera than "HD Camera Ultra". I did encounter a bug with the white balance in "LG Camera". After one of my earlier pix, it selected one setting for while balance and locked on that even thou it was set to auto. This was very frustrating, although eventually I learned that to work around a clear 'bug' in the software, I had to manual change the white balance to something else, then go back to auto, before the auto worked (ie I managed to find a way out of some bug in the software's white balance auto setting). LG camera does have some adverts that I found a bit annoying - clearly they want one to pay for the commercial version to remove the adverts. I did not check out the cost to remove the adverts. Instead, I will likely remove the app. I can't see paying for a white balance bug.
.
Open Camera on Google Play Store by Mark Harman. I played with this briefly. I really like its autofocus implementation. Click on any object in the camera view, and the software will endeavour to adjust all settings (and not just the focus) based on a small area about that object. I found that kind of neat.
As noted, likely I will delete "LG Camera" and keep "Open Camera" and keep "HD Camera Ultra".
.
I'm using A Better Camera Unlocked, bought last year during 90% discount (was is christmas?) time just like this black friday discount.
I tested a lot of cameras like dslr camera, google camera, better camera, camera fx, camera fv-5, snap camera and so on.
For me camera fv-5 and snap camera hdr gives me the best results by far.
I personaly prefer snap camera hdr :good:
Quick question: Does the quality of the picture changes (does the post-processing algorythm changes) between camera apps, or is one better than the other just because of it's manual options?

Post processing algo could differ from one app to another of course, it's up to the app writer to use what algo (possibly user configurable). The parameters sent to the camera might differ as well, where that could generate different initial image from the camera hardware.
Is there any camera that can take instant photos like miui camera? Snap camera can but it changes to a lower resolution.
Try google camera... it's much better and also faster now
What is not OK with the stock MIUI camera? Works really well for me.
Miui camera is wonderful... Probably the best I tried... But as I'm sticking with Mokee I dont have access to miuis camera... Using google camera at the moment... Simples but works well...

Miui camera is excellent but if we use cm or mokee rom then we can't use miui camera obviously.
I'm using Snap Camera. The picture is much more better and clearer compared to other apps that i had tried.
just my opinion tho..
Snap camera is really good... Tried google camera but... Snap camera is to me the best option... Lots of options and best image... IMO better than miui camera.

Did you change around any settings in snap camera?
I changed ISO to get best PICs at night, steady shot is also very nice... Being able to Adjust brightness, exposure, contrast, sharpness while taking the pictures also gives a good improvement... Well among many other things I dont even know what they are for... Loool
But specially the night pics get much better...
Can somebody explain me, why Camera API 2.0 isn't used by most of the vendors? This is just ridiculous.
As for me, I use A Better Camera with everything unlocked.
Hello friend, but if you do like the Rom miui because you bought a phone Xiaomi?

Snap Camera vs stock camera

I have been trying out Snap Camera to see if it's better then the stock camera. So far I'm a bit disappointed. HDR mode is slower and it can't even focus right. I tried multiple times to take a picture outdoors of my cat with Snap Camera on HDR and it was out of focus every time even though i touched to focus. Using the stock camera on the first try came out perfect. Does anyone else use this camera app and what settings did you use to work good with the Galaxy S7? And what custom HDR settings are good for this phone? I tried using the Samsung setting in the options and also the Camera 2 setting. I've never had good luck or was comfortable with 3rd party camera software in the past. It always seems like the stock camera apps are better and more integrated with the phones. thanks.
anyone?

Not really, mainly the same experience that in the end nothing beats the stock camera... Tried a few in the past, but somehow always go back to stock. Not so much that the quality is worse, mainly usability or possibilities...

I know. I just tried A Better Camera and just when I thought I liked it panaramic mode failed to work properly every time. I don't know why 3rd party cameras don't work good on these phones. I was trying to see if I would like any in case I needed more control if I get a Pixel.
stock camera is the best
i have tried almost all available camera apps.
but i keep coming back to stock camera app for quality.
I guess its best tuned for the hardware

Correct. There's a lot of fancy stuff going on in the stock camera; They have all kinds of FPGA binary images and different scene modes (e.g. night, sport, ... ) all fitted to the hardware.

S8 plus bad vs Note 4 camera

Hey guys
since my wife broke her Note1 I was kind if happy to trade my N4 against a S8plus. But I am so disappointed with the camera which is one of the reason for me to spend so much money.
The raw is kind of ok.
But in+0 EV pictures are way too dark I think.
The jpg resolution seems awful with artifacts - I dont recall this from the Note 4.
What especially drives me crazy is that the app reduces the shutter speed in a way it is not possible to take sharp pics of stationary objects let alone moving ones. Its like only 20-30perc seem keepers.
Does anybody know how to force the app to not go beyond like 1/30h? If I use pro mode and set the shutter speed ISO looses automatic thus this mode is a joke. I cant set the ISO as well when shooting kids. The app also forgets the pro mode after closing it - so annoying.
I know I need to show examples but I just bought an office and dont have time atm. But maybe someone shares my dissappointment and maybe some guy/gal has a work around?

Seems strange you are having photo quality issues. Across the board the s8 camera gets great reviews. You tried using open camera for a bit more control of the photos?
