[Q] From Gpe 4.4.4 to non gpe - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
a couples of weeks ago i converted my italian moto g to GPE using Moto Tools, now i want to go back and flash again the rom i want (for example cyanogenmod 11)
how i do this?i've read that many people brick the device when they try to go back so i want to be sure of the tinghs to do before trying
i even have a backup of my stock rom but the recovery partition size is the same?i can just use the cwm backup& restore?

hi guys i've coming back from gpe ,i used the XT1032_RETAILSL-EU_4.4.4_KXB21.14-L1.40_39_cid7_CFC_1FF.xml.zip the phone boot up but now i have the continous popup of "com.android.phone has stopped working" i cannot even copy another rom anyone have a workaround? maybe i've used the wrong retail rom..
any suggest?

It sounds like you haven't done the fastboot flash correctly. Try to do the final command: fastboot erase userdata - (WARNING: this will wipe any photos, music etc.)
Guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2542219
Do all the commands manually, and report back any errors.
FYI, that firmware image you have downloaded is the SIM-Locked version, while it should not be the cause of your issue, here is the non SIM-Locked version: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=54757500&highlight=retail+eu#post54757500

try flashing it via fastboot. You will find the recovery MotoToll All in one/Data/KitKat
you only need to enter fastboot and type on a cmd fastboot flash recovery file.img
Hi su,
i also tried to Convert my XT1039 to GPE, with the same error, but apparently it worked anyway, since after that the regular start screen showed and the LED flashed white on starting the device.
But i was still stuck in the same bootloop as you.
I then flashed a complete 4.4.4 Retail .zip piece by piece via fastboot.exe according to the instructions in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/4g-development/xt1039-moto-g-4g-stock-firmware-kxb21-t2805619. Then the phone finally worked
Good luck,

I need both sim cards for my day to day calling

We can use only one sim.
The reason why I would like to change it to Gpe, is because MotoCare, Assist, Alert etc apps from Motorola just consume a lot of battery. I tried to remove these apps but I can't completely remove them.
I need some help with the Moto tool:
1. What is recovery? (Flash stock recovery, fastboot etc., what and when we should use these?)
2. What is Stock recovery? (I'm using KitKat 4.4.4, can I use original google kitkat without Motorola applications?)
3. Can someone provide a link to understand the basics of Android firmware flashing?
I'm a computer engineer and worked on vc++ but I'm completely new to Android
Thanks in advance!
Can I use mototool for GPE 4.4.4? Or has it to be 4.4.2 as the description provided that version.
I had some problem flashing to GPE 444 from Cyanogen 11. It asked for a password to decrypt my phone.
So I flashed it to motorola stock 444, lucky for me it worked.
Has anyone had any luck converting their XT1045 to a stock GPE ROM? During the flashing I get errors "hab check failed for boot" and "hab check failed for recovery" then a boot loop at the unlocked GPE boot screen.
can this be used for lollipop
will this tool work for lollipop 5.0.2
Help!
I tried 'Flash stock recovery' but in the phone it says partition size mismatch. And fails.Help! :/
I have a second Moto G (2013 version). Could I convert that one into a GPE edition and then receive lollipop OTA update? I think the OTA update is out since like a couple months for the GPE version. Any ideas? Also thanks a lot for this, it's a great tool!
Hi,
I want to root an XT1045. ¿Will this tool work with (XT1045) or only in 102X and 103X versions?
Thanks.
Can i root my moto g xt1033 with lollipop 5.0.2 with this tool ?
Thanks a lot!

[Q] Need info about moving through firmwares

This is what i did so far: (xt1032)
1 Converted STOCK KK 4.4.4 RETAILARGENTINA to GPE Lollipop 5.0.1 following this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/general/guide-convert-brazilian-firmware-gpe-5-t2969472. Also the bat named "BRAZILIAN 5 TO 4.4.4 GPE.BAT" Flashes the KK GPE firmware without moto boot and partition gpt and "ANY FIRMWARE TO 4.4.4 GPE.BAT"flashes the KK GPE with those files.
2 Encrypted device.
3 Somehow i ended up deleting stock keyboard, replaced by playstore one, but i could not put the unlock password for encryption when booting.
4 So i adb pushed a custom recovery and a rom.
4 When trying to flash the lastest CM12 Nightly using this TWRP recovery version: "openrecovery-twrp-2.8.3.0-xt1032_GPE.img is for GPE ONLY (ext4 userdata)" it failed to do a factory reset. Then i formatted data and factory reset was successful. After that i noticed that the screen was flickering (like a wave coming down from the top). After that i tried to install the zip but it failed to do it.
5 So i followed this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/general/how-to-revert-5-0-1-gpe-to-4-4-4-5-0-5-t2988565 I ONLY FOLLOWED THE FIRST PARTY STEPS. (i dont know why it rruns the second bat as with the first one you already made the downrgade to KKGPE) (Also uses same bat files from 1)
If someone could provide some information about the bootloader changes in my device and the precautions, restrictions that i need to consider from where i am now, and some explanations for the problems below i would be gratefull. Thanks in advance.

Ok, i'm not sure i understood everything correctly,
you have a XT1032 with the 4.4.4 GPE related bootloader, is that right?
then you shouldn't have issues to install CM12,
you should flash a compatible recovery (i like CWM-based recovery v6.0.5.1, you can try both the GPE and the "stock" dedicated TWRP if one doesn't work then try the other one, since we don't exactly know how is your device at that point)
and then try the following :
boot to recovery (using power+vol_down method)
format /system, /data, "/data and /data/media", /cache (that's how it is called by CWM-based, no idea for TWRP)
prepare your ROM+gapps (try CM12 ) on your computer
choose install zip > install from sideload and sideload from computer
wait for files to be copied and flashed (and repeat for gapps)
reboot
wait
Hope it helps

[Q] Getting nowhere trying to flash lollipop :(

Hi,
I wonder if anyone could offer me a little assistance please ? I have a UK Tesco Moto G 16GB (2013) that I have successfully unlocked the bootloader and rooted and CWM recovery installed. Currently, it's running 4.4.4 Kitkat. I gave up with the OTA update as I was getting the 'preflash validation failed' message. More recently, I have tried following the guide on here to flash the XT1032_GPE_5.1_Optimized_v1.1.zip file using CWM. However, this resulted in what I believe is termed a bootloop - i.e. the coloured dots animation just never stopped - I waited half an hour and it was still going.
I've managed to restore it back to my previous 4.4.4 for the moment, but I would like to move to Lollipop at some point - if I could !
Could someone suggest a method I could try please ?
Many thanks !
Kev.
Hi there.
Well, my device is a XT1032 Retail US but I may have been through the problems you're facing right now.
Here we go:
Go full stock (don't know if you revocer from a backup or already did this but in any case you'd know what to do: This guide helped me a lot. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2542219.
Do not install any official update using a custom recovery
Make sure you got the actual latest recovery version. If you went stock from the latest firmware you should have already got it.
If you have your OTA, Install it manually from the stock recovery
This method should work. It is the one I followed.
I got two errors: 1st was because was using custom recovery.
2nd was because my rom was stock but had deleted system apps, so the install failed always at some point.
Once I flashed the latest stock firmware including the stock recovery, I was able to install my OTA update.
Let me know if this works.

How to flash stock ROM in XT1040?

Hi, I've read many guides on how to flash stock roms and stuff, but I'm still not sure how to do it in my case.
I bought an XT1040 from a guy and it came with bootloader unlocked and Lollipop 5.0.2 (CM 12-20150126-NIGHTLY-peregrine)
I wanted to install the stock LP rom, but then I found an optimized version on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/4g-development/rom-stock-motorola-4g-lollipop-rom-t3142816 I think that would be better, but the problem is I'm following this guide to install a stock rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2542219 but it says you have to flash every file, one by one, yet this .zip I downloaded (Retail Latin America 5.1 ROM (Optimized) v1.0a (331mb)) only has a "boot.img" and some folders named "supersu", "system" and "META-INF". Does that mean I have to flash the whole ZIP in the recovery? (oh and btw I installed TWRP v2.8.7 [recoverytwrp2-8-7encryption.img] using adb, I didn't wipe the other recovery with "fastboot erase recovery" because this had CWM already installed... is that okay?)
What should I do?
In short:
I have a bootloader unlocked phone with Lollipop 5.0.2 (CM 12-20150126-NIGHTLY-peregrine) and CWM
I flashed TWRP v2.8.7 without wiping recovery (at least I think that's what "fastboot erase recovery" does)
I want to flash a stock rom (optimized) with LP 5.1 from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/4g-development/rom-stock-motorola-4g-lollipop-rom-t3142816 (Retail Latin America 5.1 ROM (Optimized) v1.0a (331mb)) but I'm not sure what to do.
Thanks.

I just decided to do what the guide said:
1) Boot into latest TWRP and Format Data (Wipe > Format DATA > Yes) - This step is essential, and will wipe Internal Storage (Downloads, Music, Photos etc, **backup important files**)
2) Transfer ROM to SDCARD or Internal Storage. This may be done in Windows via MTP, or using adb sideload or adb push ROM.zip /sdcard/
3) TWRP > Wipe > Factory reset and flash ROM.
4) Reboot.
5) Call / WiFi issues can be solved by flashing 5.1 Radio Firmware (Below) for your Model.
now I'm in the step 3, trying to flash the ROM but the bar doesn't fill at all...
_________________________________________
Lol that was me panicking, the device managed to flash the ROM and it's working now, I also flashed the radio firmware so I have working WiFi, but the screen flickering keeps happening each time I reboot the device.
I'll probably want to downgrade in the future... any tip on that would be appreciated.
You don't need to use Fastboot other than when changing TWRP version. Simply flash the Optimized Stock ROM (or any custom ROM) via TWRP. Screen flickering is caused by not having updated your Bootloader - this utility will do that for you: Bootloader Upgrader Tool.
I highly recommend you try the following optimized Stock Marshmallow ROM: (It's faster than Lollipop)
[ROM][PEREGRINE][6.0][STOCK] Identity Crisis 6 LTE v1.3b

TWRP: Pre-ROM flash Wipe, boots back into system instead (Moto G 4G LTE)

Hi guys,
Not sure if anyone else has had this issue, but I've only got a Moto G 4G fairly recently (my Nexus 5 died) and have been attempting ROM flashing (never had an issue with multiple Nexus phones & tablets) I was flashing the rom OK but the sim card wasn't recognised - so went back to rooted stock Kitkat & Xposed.
Today I thought I'd give it another go, got into TWRP, advanced wipe as usual...but it didn't complete and the phone suddenly booted back into the system (with the Android upgrading/optimizing message you usually get when starting a new phone)
System is untouched, still rooted/xposed etc. Does anyone have an idea why this has suddenly happened? Never encountered anything like this before. TWRP is the latest version 3.1.1.0
Any suggestions welcome, cheers.
Just thinking....would flashing with adb be a solution?
Just flash lollipop stock ROM using mfastboot
later you can flash twrp recovery and then proceed with the nougat or oreo based ROM.. Bootloader should be updated so my suggestion is flash lollipop stock ROM
