[Q] No SMS while on wifi, can't switch from wifi to cellular - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Nexus 5 is running Android 5.0.1 (Lollipop). Unlocked, not rooted. My carrier is Cricket. Here is what happens:
1. If the phone is connected to a WiFi network, I am unable to send text messages. The message will attempt sending for a while and then basically timeout. The app will report that the send failed. This will happen no matter what application I use (Hangouts, Google Messenger, chompSMS...). If I'm on the cellular network, texts send find. EDIT: Actually I'm seeing that's not actually true. Even when I'm on LTE, there's no guarantee messages will send. I can't actually detect a pattern here.
2. I am unable to switch from WiFi to cellular data by turning WiFi off. If I'm on WiFi and I disable Wifi in the Settings panel, the cellular indicator will change to show 2 or 3 bars of service with an exclamation point (!), seemingly indicating that I'm either not on the network or that I don't have data. If I reboot the phone I'll have full LTE.
I first started noticing the issues with text messaging back when I was running CM11 nightlies. Everything was fine and then a few weeks ago it started happening. I figured something had gotten messed up in those builds so I flashed to stock Lollipop but the problem persisted. I flashed to 5.0.1 and the problem remains. I also tried switching carriers from Cricket to T-Mobile, but T-Mobile service was so bad in my area that I had to switch back the next day; I didn't really get a chance to put it through its paces.
I know this is a weird one, so any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

[Q] Cellular Data Loss When screen off for more than 3 min Straight Talk

Hey all,
I just got my nexus 5, 2 days ago. When I am NOT connected to wifi my LTE Data connection drops after my screen has been off for about 3-5 minuets. When wifi is connected I don't lose my data connection. I can still receive Texts. Yes Background data is turned on. When the screen is on I am getting great speeds. I figured this out because I was not getting notificaions. When I turn the screen on and check my notification setting panel the LTE turns orange for about a second then goes back to white.
What I have tried
1. Turn off LTE Tried 3g and 2g. I had the same problem.
2. Tried alternate APN Settings. There are many variation to choose from for straight talk with a Google search.
2a. I am a tfdata sim on straight talk, FYI
3. Factory Data Reset
4. Re-flash Stock Factory rom and recovery. I was rooted and TWRP
5. Lock Bootloader
I have a call and email out to straight talk, waiting for a response, but thought I would post and see if anyone can think of anything I might of missed. Hope I don't have to send it back to Google.
Thanks In advance
Eric
Update
Just wanted to update in case someone else runs in to these issues.
When straight talk provisioned my sim there were some errors. They were not able to correct them in the computer so have to send me a new sim. It took 4 phone calls to finally come to this conclusion. I will update again if the issue is resolved with the new sim.
As a clarification to the problem. As it turns out it had nothing to do with the screen being on or off. It happened every time my data connection went idle.
I have the exact same issue with my Straight Talk service!
Did you get the new SIM yet? Did it fix the issue?

Mobile Data Randomly Being Disabled

I have recently switched from Straight Talk to an AT&T 10 GB Mobile Share Plan. Since then my mobile data will randomly be turned off when i'm connected to wifi. It wont turn back on when i disconnect, nor when my device receives (or attempts to receive) an MMS message. Is there some setting i may have accidentally accessed since the activation? I don't have any programs that are capable of changing my device status like that (nor is my phone rooted).
Dont get me wrong, i'm glad something is trying to help me conserve battery haha, but it does get annoying since i only notice it when i get a notification that my device is unable to send/receive a picture message, or that i have no data once i leave the wifi network.
Its just weird since it has only started happening since switching to AT&T Postpaid.

Which ROM are you running? That is strange. It could be something with the APN as well. Are you on LTE or stuck on 3g? Maybe your phone is stuck in one and tries to switch from LTE to H or vice versa? I know when my phone chooses H instead of LTE (I use Cricket, but same towers) it takes quite a few seconds to get a data connection to load, but LTE is pretty quick to load.
It doesn't actually save battery to have data off when using WiFi since that is already happening behind the scenes. Not sure why yours is toggling the setting on its own but perhaps a factory reset would fix it.

Everything is stock. I had a APN automatically assigned from AT&T that caused me to constantly switch from HSPA+ to LTE. I found a better one online and now get LTE most of the time. I never really gets "stuck".Its not that the data isn't loading, its that it is literally set to "mobile data off" on my device, and i have to manually turn it back on in the settings. I wasn't aware an APN setting could change other settings on a phone?

it could be an app doing it, and you not knowing that it can.

No 2g/3g. Can't make/recv calls. LTE shows service but will not connect

I'll also add we have isolated this to the phone. Sim card works in a different Nexus5. Text messages come through.... 10-20 minutes after sending and usually one at a time. Like the title states, I have tried switch from LtE to 3g and 2g only, but I will not get any service on either.
Steps we've tried so far:
Reflash stock images for 5.1.1, 5.1 and 4.4.4. This is a stock Nexus 5, never been rooted.
Creating new APNs,
Tried registering different cellular network.
Also tried removing back cover to reset the connections of the antenna.
This device is 1.5 yrs old so it may have just kicked the bucket.
What other steps can I try?

Lineage OS 7.1.1: Unable to send SMS messages

Hello all,
I flashed my girlfriend's Sprint S5 with Lineage OS recently without a hitch, all services working perfectly. We ended up traveling, so she went to Sprint to set up a temporary international roaming plan. Everything was completely as expected abroad. When we got back, her phone would not send SMS messages.
We tried the usual airplane mode and such, and to no avail. Assuming something was wrong with the network configuration from travelling, we reset network settings. Didn't work. I then decided to just do a full wipe and re-flash of Lineage OS. Still doesn't work. I then resorted to going back to the stock TouchWiz ROM from Sprint. At that point, under the stock ROM, SMS were sending. Out of curiosity, we flashed back Lineage OS, and SMS will again not send. We noticed that if the SIM card is removed, SMS will send, but the phone would not be able to access 4G LTE. We also confirmed with Sprint that there are no restrictions on the account.
What could be causing this to occur only on custom Roms? Do we need to do a PRL update? If so, how does that work on stock Android?
Thanks in advance!
S5 sprint No outbound sms
I've had this problem for weeks....So far the only solution is using Google voice app....
I'm using LOS 7.1.1 20170207 kltespr nightly, LTE SMS can only receive, sending doesn't work. Only 3G SMS works.
Things I noticed:
Settings -> About Phone -> Status -> IMEI Information. When on 3G, all information is displayed here, when on LTE, only IMEI and IMEI SV is displayed, there's no PRL/MIN/MEID/ICCID anywhere, not even disabled or greyed out, just hidden completely.
ICCID also shows DUMMY_NV_ICC_SERIAL instead of the actual ICCID.
Same experience for me, I've been trying to find a workaround for over a month with no success. Alternative text messaging apps seem to work, but I don't trust 3rd parties with my SMS.
Unable to send SMS
Mike.
Which third party SMS app are you getting to work? Besides Google voice I have had no luck with any third party app?
I'm having the same issue. I'm on Resurrection ROM which is based on Lineage. Since update I can't send SMS at all other than via Google Voice. I can receive SMS and I can send/receive MMS.
I did find that if I change to 3g only for my network settings, I can send SMS. But then of course I don't get LTE data speeds for everything else. So the issue for me at least is tied specifically to LTE. Wondering if there is an APN or other setting I can change that would fix this but so far no luck finding anything.
Bug reported since 01/28

I've run into the same problem or similar. If I set my preferred network type to GLOBAL then I can send and receive SMS/MMS messages but I'm forced to either Roaming LTE or 3G. It's often stuck in 3G after a drive for any distance. If I force it to LTE, then SMS/MMS stops working and I can't place or receive calls either but the network will show up as LTE and Sprint.
To get there from Settings Home -> More (under Wireless and Networks) -> Cellular networks -> Preferred network type -> Choose Global.
Sometimes I can force it back to LTE but roaming if I switch temporarily to LTE then once it connects switch back to Global. Occasionally I have to put it in airplane mode to get the radios to reset and connect but some combo of switching network type and ending up in global and switching into and back from airplane will do the trick.
YMMV of course.
one way I fix it temporarily is to:
cell networks - carrier settings, let it crash
go in again and let it find your carrier
once connected, make a phone call at least to get it ringing
I can then make sms mms.
it's a rediculous work around but it works for me every time
SMS Sending Problem with Lineage 14.1 (31.07.2017)
Heyy
I'm not able to send sms from SIM 1 but can send sms from SIM 2 in Lenovo A6020a46 (2GB) on Lineage 14.1 (31.07.2017).
The same SIM is working good in another roms and Calling + Internet are working properly.
After dialing *#*#4636#*#* in Phone Information - SMSC Refresh then it appeared "Phone no.", 456 and I pressed Update.
But there was no process for saving or updating. Then I reentered in Phone Information but SMSC Shows blank.
What to do??? anybody help in this matter will be immensely appreciated.

I made this file using Odin with the steps from here. I flashed the file, set the connection to LTE aand it worked. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=71582847&postcount=5908
To fix this issue with having LTE signal and sending SMS at the same time you have to open EnginneringMode app (or *#*#3646663#*#*) and check 'Sms over Sgs support' in Misc Feature Config tab.
Doesn't work because nothing comes up entering the code. Any idea?

If that code doesn't work for you, try to find an app called Engineering Mode MTK. Unfortunately I cannot attach any screenshots yet (I got less than 10 posts).
fix
there is an option in network settings (enhanced 4G LTE mode for comunications etc) i disabled that option and messaging works fine now. before unchecking this option i could only send sms only with phone on 3g mode, now it works fine. i think this option is for hd voice calls via 4g lte.
I see this is an old problem and I´m having the same problem. I can receive SMS, but I can´t send.
But to add to that, I couldn´t connect at all with my previous carrier and changed carrier after which I can use data, call and send SMS. I still can´t receive SMS.

Wifi calling randomly reverts back to cell signal only on MetroPCS

I'm running stock Pie on a regular Pixel 2 and am having some trouble with WiFi calling. It'll show that it's connected at the bottom for a while after a reboot like in the picture but then randomly revert to only saying MetroPCS and not send or receive texts or calls when I'm in a dead network area. I've reset network settings and downloaded the carrier service app but I'm stuck and frustrated now. Any ideas?
Now I'm off again even though it's still enabled
