[Q] Nexus 5 D821 LTE in the United States - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So in a rushed move, I bought three (3!) Nexus 5 D821s (32GB) as gifts only to realize that it's the D820 model that gets LTE on T-Mobile in the United States. I'm wondering, is there is any way to enable the radios in the D821 to get it to work in the US completely rather than being limited to H/H+ If not, I guess I'll either have to return them or sell them. I own a D820 personally and am no stranger to rooting, adb, flashing, etc.

[Q] Best place to buy the N5 D821 variant from?

I just learned about the D820 vs D821 variants and as I'll use the phone outside NA, I might need the D821 model to use LTE - though the LTE coverage in the Middle East is garbage still.
What's the best place I can buy the D821 N5 from? The UK Play Store will cost me a whopping ~$550 for the 32GB version. If I use the Australian Play, I'll need an Aussie address (and package forwarding service - anyone know of anything like Borderlinx there) and an Aussie credit card!
Any ideas would be helpful

Sprint Nexus 5

hello im just planning to buy a Sprint Nexus 5, but i want to check if root process, roms, kernels are the same between all carrier variants because im only seeing hammerhead. sorry about the question
There is only 2 nexus 5 variant.
D820 is sold in america
D821 is sold in rest of the world
There is no difference between D820 and D821. A chip on D820 is programmed to work with usa lte networks, while on D821 this chip is programmed to work with lte network outside of the usa. Besides that all nexus is the same, and all sim unlocked.

If you're really planning to buy; not rent a phone, just get it from the Play Store. The 16gb version is cheaper and you can get the 32 gb version if you want, which Sprint doesn't carry. You can get the SIM card from Sprint and activate it, no charge. That unleashes you from any long term commitment to Sprint.

North American Nexus 5 in Asia

Hi,
I have a north american version Nexus 5 bought in Canada. I will be travelling to Hong Kong and want to use the 4G network there
Am I able to do this or the north american verison cannot use the 4G LTE bands in Hong Kong
Is there any way to flash it or ROM it to change the bands if so?
Thanks
US version should NOT work in HK
If it is only for a short visit, you might have a look for pocket Wifi instead, Many shopping mall offer free Wifi there.

4G of US version (D820) will not work, only 2G and 3G working.
p.s. my wife got the D820 which bought from google online when in canada, so I quite sure about that.

You are indeed correct. Everything but LTE will work just fine.
I have a similar question, but flipped a little for the D821. I want to buy my wife a Nexus 5 phone that will work in both China and Hong Kong -- preferably 4G.
What if I purchase the D821 for use in Asia that, from my research on the 4G LTE bands, will work on 4G in those two countries. Then I bring it back to the US for use. Can anyone confirm whether it will work on US GSM based networks' 4G? I'm almost positive it will not work on either T-Mobile or AT&T, but I can't find much info on any other GSM based network here in the US (which I think use AT&T or T-Mobile networks anyway).
I'd appreciate any help you can offer. I'm still doing research, but there's a good deal going on on ebay for brand new, unlocked D821s for about $375 USD -- reputable Top Seller too. So, I probably need to act fast. In the end, this will be my wife's first smartphone, and so 3G will be fast enough for her, and works perfectly fine in both US and Asia.
THANKS!

3G will work, 4G will not work. Basically the N5 is a world phone except when it comes to LTE, then you need either the North American version or the rest of the world version.

[Q] LG D820 vs D821 Rom Development?

im about to purchase a nexus 5. D820 is a more affordable than the D821. im located in dubai. im not worried about 4g/3g as it will be connected to my iPhone LTE tether. i wanted to know if the rom development was the same for both phones. As in the ROMS that are released, can they be used on both models, or are there separate rom development like the Note 3 LTE and 3g versions.
Yes they can be. The models are interchangeable only by the network bands they support. 821 is international and 820 is USA. It should not matter if you're tethering only but I'd recommend getting an 821 since you live in Dubai.
If you get the D820 model, you can kiss 4g good bye. That's the only difference

[Q] Enabling Nexus 5 D820 LTE bands

Well, let me start from the beginning.
Im from Israel, and I bought a used Nexus 5, I've been warned that the phone doesn't get any reception and thought I could fix it somehow.
So while checking up the phone, I noticed its a D820 model Nexus, so I checked it up online and read its a US model and works only with their LTE bands, while there's a D821 model which works on rest of the world's LTE bands.
So while searching up online how to fix my problem so I will get those LTE bands worked on my D820, I've came across guide to enable some LTE bands (3 and 7 to be specific), and still trying that up..
But a thought came up my mind and I would like to know your opinion about it:
while checking up the 2 model specs, I noticed that both of them share the same specs and the only difference between them is their transceiver using other LTE bands, so theoretically speaking, if I place a D821 model motherboard in my D820 phone, I will get the reception and "transform" it to a D821 model?
so perhaps I could buy a used D821 which his owner broke his LCD screen or something, buy it cheaply and replace the 2 motherboards and my nexus will work as a D821 and get that reception is so desperately need?
By the way, if someone has a better walkthrough of how to get those LTE bands on the D820 and save me some cash, I will be honored to get a helpful PM.
I will be glad if someone with experience\knowledge will inlight my eyes.
thanks in advance!
