Speakers permanently quiet - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since around a week ago, my z3 got water contact. It was not submerged but it was just a water splash. After that bottom speaker sound very quiet. When i do service test the bottom speaker is very quiet. Also loudspeaker calls are very quiet since it only used the bottom speaker for that. I tried everything from putting silica gel on top of the speaker, putting it on rice to cleaning with alcohol. Do anyone experiencing the same? Should i be worried now or there's a chance it would go away. I can't have warranty since this unit was a grey unit

Earpiece Volume Went Abysmal

Hi guys,
My screen got a bit dirty today so I decided to get wet a piece of cloth and wipe down my screen. However it seems that now my call quality is god awful and I can barely hear out of the earpiece. Has this happened to anyone else? I've wiped down my iPhone 4 multitudes of times in the same manner and have never encountered anything like this.
I actually thought the sound quality was excellent before and to have to fall like this is horrifying.
Can anyone suggest a solution? I have a big phone interview this week and I need to be able to hear clearly
Did water get into the internals? Turn off your phone and place in into rice.
Unless it entered through the earpiece, I don't think it did. I really have no idea about how the earpiece is built or if the water would be able to reach the internals via the headphones. Definitely nothing went inside any other opening though....
Wait for the earpiece to dry, its quite exposed up there. Personally I use dry cloth only but if its really bad a touch of water on the cloth can help but not so much as to create any puddles.

FYI about putting your phone in water...

I decided to test my phone in a sink of water tonight. It is still on and working fine. Typing this on it. However, the speaker is now jacked. It's cracky sounding and very low volume when turned all the way up. Really freaking sucks. ..taking in for exchange in the morning.
I wondered what woukd happen with headphone jack and speaker...now you know.
That's probably because there's water in the speaker, but doesn't mean it's damaged. Have you tried waiting until it's dry?
I'll give it to the morning and see how it sounds. ..i just did it an hour ago.
I think it needed water proof jacket... Anyone have it ?
Even it is a water resistant ill rather avoid it on water.
Well I woke up this morning and the speaker was fine. Guess it just needs time to dry.

You should probably change the topic now...
I'll do that later. Phone is 100% again. I was worried. Speaker sounded like crap.
Water test on day one? You're brave. VZW won't replace if there's water damage. I had the Casio Commando, that was built to be waterproof, that somehow got water damage, and they wouldn't replace it.

I have the full equipment insurance. It should cover anything. I've always wanted a waterproof phone. Had to try it.

I figured once it dried it would be OK. Just think how water droplets would affect a tight piece of plastic the is reverberating (speaker). Not good.

[Q] Speakers after testing waterproof

Hi,
i just got my Xperia Z3. I was curious and wanted to test the waterproof function. So i dropped it in the sink with al the ports closed of course
The speakers are now sounding strange (muffled) and deformed. I know that the speakers needs to dry up, but it was 3 days ago...
Is there something i can do to cleanup the speakers, or are the speakers now broken?
3 days ago? Yeah I think you might have a problem

You asked for help, I gave a working advice. You don't seem to need it, I remove it.
Lol.
Just wash it again, and kick ass on towel. It will work fine.
Lol washing machine. You made my day.

Try this:
- Get distilled water (you can use the water from a tumble dryer), put it in a bowl.
- Add ONE drop of dishwashing detergent (not more).
- Soak the Z3 in that mixture over night.
- Place bowl with Z3 still inside on a washing machine, put a lot of clothes in, start the spinning program, making sure the bowl cannot drop from the washing machine.
- Get more distilled water, do NOT add any detergent, water the Z3 in a fresh bowl, using some gentle movements.
- Let it dry, speaker side down, making sure the speaker holes are not covered.
Speakers should be ok again.
Explanations:
- Distilled water because it has almost no floating particles.
- Dishwasher detergent because the residues caused by your former experiment hardened, now need to break loose.
- Spinning circle because the movements and vibrations will help loosing the residues. Loading the machine with lots of clothes ensures there will be enough vibrations.

Classy, assume you told the buyer about this?
Anyway, weird that it still is muffled after a few days. Makes sense that everything has to dry up properly, perhaps put it in a glass with rice or something?

yeah of course, that why is sold it for 200euros instead of the 590
Speakers are now working after washing it with warm water
now that i im thinking...maybe i shouldn't have sold my old Xperia Z and just waited longer or washed it again with warm water
I had the same thing happen to me when I did a water test (fairly sure 90% of the people who buy any Z series will do this on day one, guaranteed)
I noticed the microphone sounded muffled too, I just dropped a drop of rubbing alcohol in each of the ports, let it sit for 10 - 20 seconds and wiped it out with a microfiber cloth. No more distortion!
I just wish that it wasn't necessary every time it gets wet. I bought this phone purely because summer is coming up here in Australia and I wanted something a bit more durable around the beaches!

Some of your didn't learn how to read properly, right ?
I did not suggest to put the Z3 IN the washing machine, but ON the washing machine. This way you'll get some vibrations you'll need for softening any residues sticking to the speakers.
So next time: Read, think, write. Don't skip step 2, even if that breaks up normal habits.
My suggestions DO work. But as the OP crying for help doesn't seem to follow my advice, I don't see any need of leaving it around.

I had the same thing happen and kind of freaked out for a few seconds. I took a shot of compressed air and blew out the headphone jack. Good as new.
Be careful not to take any photos under water. Voids your warranty
DONT!

The Z3 can only take up to 30 minutes of water. If you soak it overnight it WILL break.
After exposure to water you must open all flaps turn off the device and let it dry for 2 hours everything will work perfectly after!

Speakers Z3, low volume when playing music on integrated speakers
Hi friends,
Tested out Water proof property of SONY Xperia Z3,
Even after a full month of waiting, the speaker sound was still like ****,
So today, out of desperation, I heated the speakers using the heat from an incandescent bulb,
can't say that they are back to 100 Percent but surely much better sound than from one day ago,...
Gonna heat it some more,...
Hope this helps solve this problem because i know how frustrating it can be !!~ Good luck
P.S - Be careful with how much heat you provide because usually mobile's speakers are made with a thin plastic materia

Z3 top speaker metal

Can you please quickly look at the top ear piece and tell me if you can see some flat metal thing partially under the speaker grill mesh? is that normal?
thanks

well I haven't ripped one if these apart yet but my guess is that they had to suspend the speakers in their own little chamber in order for the acoustics to work with the waterproofing. I think that metal thing is the speaker itself.
I have gone through 4 Z3s for one reason or another and all had the same appearing top speakers so I'm guessing it's normal.
I can see the same with mine so I'm guessing it is normal for these devices

I have replaced 3 Z3s (Cosmetic defects) on my 4th, I can say its normal it's on every one I have seen.
Same here on my Z3.

[Q] After replacing the screen, earpiece grill is not working

Hi there,
I replaced my broken screen with a screen+frame which has the grill on the screen. However, after replacement, I can not hear any sound when somebody calls me. I need to use the speaker or the earphones to talk to somebody, pretty annoying. Do you have any idea what I did wrong or missing?
Thanks.

Did the speaker grill have any coating or covering on the inside? Perhaps you either disconnected or tore a ribbon cable that was connected to the speaker (if there was one)? I had similar issues with my screen replacement, but had issues with no cellular signal. I'm going to have to take mine apart again to investigate. I would suggest the same for you...

Hey, I had the same problem when I first replaced. The solution is easy. I forgot to plug in one of the cables which apparently increases the cellular signal. See the pictures attached.
I can not open the grill, for the sake of not opening the screen from the frame I bought the screen with frame and grill. So this defeats whole purpose.
Anybody has any idea about it? Is there a special connection for earpiece speaker?
Are you sure you have the ear speaker installed ? I don't think you have to open the screen to change the speaker.
In step 19 in the iFixit guide they remove the speaker BEFORE they remove the screen.
By the way where did you ordered the screen + mid frame? How is the rest of the quality ?

Hey Thanks for this. I installed it as well but still not working, interesting. I'm going to reopen try to fit it again.
I bought it from here: aliexpress.com/snapshot/6480736262.html?orderId=65692759745232 - DHL sent me the item in less than one week.
There is also alternative: vifocal.com/lcd-display-digitizer-replacement-with-middle-frame-for-oneplus-one-64gb-16gb.html
Quality is ok, I had ghost swipes before. It's not happening any more. Maybe because of software fixes (I'm on CM12 nightly, Lollipop). Apart from that, the colors are a lil bit washed out. I got used to anyways Sometimes under bright light (outdoors afternoon), greens look so weird. Overall I'm satisfied because I dropped the phone a lot in the past and mid frame was full of scratches. Now I have new mid frame.
Here they said the ear speaker is extremely fragile so i think it's
possible you broke it.
How is the speaker connected anyway ? I diddn't find any connector in the teardown.

So it's obviously not the original one :crying:
But contact the seller that you didn't get an original one. You can get a refund. And write him a bad critic on aliexpress that it is not original so he can't trick more people.

it might not be the original one but it saved me from the time without any phones. I gave him a good rating etc. Asking for refund would be unfair in my opinion.
Yes I also saw that xda recommendation, maybe I broke it I don't know. WIll give it a try tonite. Ordered an earpiece speaker just in case from the aliexpress for 6 bucks, but i'm sure it will take at least 1 month to arrive.

Thanks everyone, I solved the problem by putting the speaker unit horizontally 180 degree flipped and it started working.
Nice :good:
