[Q] Home screen reloads - Ascend Mate 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I'm new here and this is my first post, but I'm hoping maybe one of you can help me.
I just bought the 16 gb with 2 gb of ram model, and I'm having an issue with the home screen (EMUI "launcher") reloading. This happens mostly after using Chrome and it takes 1-2 seconds to reload/re-draw the home screen. I'm guessing Android closes the launcher because of low RAM, but I have never had this on even lower spec phones.
Any of you experienced the same or have a fix? Factory reset didn't work by the way.
Thank you!

You protect the launcher in settings. It happens to me on another phone and launcher.

Thanks for replying! I can't find a setting to protect the launcher in the setting. It's the whole EMUI interface that's reloading. Have you experienced this on your Huawei MT7?

Sometimes I do get but I am using another launcher. You are right that the default launcher is not present in the list of protected applications. Right now I am using zero launcher which looks very good. Give it a try and see if reloads occur or not.

[Q] Nova Launcher on Note Edge Issues

I've been using Nova (Prime) for longer than i can remember with minimal issues. I recently switched from Note 4 (Verizon) to Note Edge (Verizon). Ever since, i'll get at least half a dozen crashes per day. It can be while i'm inside of a random app, or simply watching the home screen. i've emailed the developer...nothing but crickets.
anyone else with this issue on a Note Edge?
Just a shot in the dark, but maybe a reinstall might work [emoji53]
Using Nova Launcher Prime on my Note Edge with zero problems. In fact just a couple days about I downloaded and installed Novas new beta version of there launcher and its even nicer than prime.

Try doing a permission fix if reinstall doesn't work.

I agree I have no problems at all. I even have changed the DPI in App Settings and it works great.
Query.

My dad has this phone & I was considering hooking him up with Nova Prime, does it work well/completely with the edge screen? If not, what's missing or doesn't quite function properly?
Thanks in advance.
Still using nova launcher and it works flawlessly on note edge, have never had an issue with it. I believe that the edge screen has it own UI so nova doesn't do anything to the edge screen nor does it affect the way it works.
It hides the edge screen by default when you're on the home screen. You have to swipe it to bring it up and there's no way to change that. That's my only issue.

Swiftkey opening slowly (due to RAM problems?)

Hey all,
I'm using swiftkey on my galaxy s6 and sometimes when I press a textbox in an app like whatsapp or hangouts it takes a while before the keyboard pops up. Also, sometimes it has to reload the dictionary after the keyboard opens (this takes just around a second). Are there more people with this problem? I didn't had this on my Xperia Z1. Is this problem RAM related? Because of the aggressive app killing on the s6.
I'd like to hear from you guys!'

When I'm opening the keyboard it sometimes says "loading predictions". That's what I mean with "reload the dictionary".

What firmware version are you on? Is it the newest? Because I believe the issue is with the newest Samsung firmware. It has nothing to do with the hardware
as much as this phone lags I think this is an issue with the app. It did the same on my m8 and that phone never lagged with any other app. It was the reason I stopped using Swiftkey and I now prefer Google over it as the swipe text is way better on that

I also switched from Swiftkey to Google because of performance. That was on m7 and I tried again on S6E and, once again, preferred Google Keyboard due to performance. A shame though as Swiftkey used to be so good. Having said all that, perhaps it wouldn't suck so bad if this phone had better ram management.
I have the same issues with SwiftKey. I am running on latest Samsung 5.1.1 firmware. Sometimes everything seems to be fine and sometimes it takes years to pop up. I have no clue why. Already tried to reinstall, clear the app cache, no effect.

Yes I'm on the latest firmware (BOGB). Ram management actually seems a little better then before. But SwiftKey isn't working as it should.

I'm on the latest Dutch firmware (BOGB). That one should be latest.
Can anyone confirm that the same problems occur with the latest beta version of SwiftKey?
I confirm that the bug has appeared with latest firmware. Yes, the new firmware has much better multitasking and ram management but this bug with swiftkey is so annoying.
I've got the same issue since a few days. I have an S6 with stock firmware running (5.1.1) and SwiftKey 5.3.4.67
Any workaround available already?
Same problem here... Let's hope for a quick update from Samsung or SwiftKey...

I am really feeling like bought ****tiest phone. Sucks bad. My nexus 5 Galaxy s3 was better. Always face issue of keyboard. Feels little went backwards
Hey Guys, you're not alone and Swiftkey is notified about the issue but they're not sure if they can solve this problem. Take a look in the forum here: https://vip.swiftkey.com/index.php?/topic/12733-slow-showing-keyboard-on-s6-bug-reported/
But I think the biggest chance of getting this fixed is to inform Samsung about this problem and wait for a fix (if possible). Does anyone know if they are also already informed?
I have the same problem I live. I'm going crazy.. I sent it to the service. Load the software and they sent it back. The problem still continues.
Do you have any news friends?
No news.. I updated the firmware to latest version. Still same problem!

Unfortunately, the last update does not solve the problem. Maybe with the next update the problem is solved.

multitasking underwhelming for a 4gb ram phone?

Not sure if its due to some bugs or just how huawei prioritizes their memory but man do apps just randomly close a bit too frequently, sometimes even switching between 2 apps! The most recent example is if I'm listening to pocketcast and I take a picture, the audio stops and when I return to that app it does a fresh open.
it's somehow worse than my iphone 6 plus which I hated because the 1gb of ram wasn't enough.
This is on the US version. Maybe I should pick up a OP3T... but I swear the other 4gb ram android phones i've used were better at this.
Wonder if there are any tweaks I can do to help?
It's probably just their aggressive battery management. Try from battery optimization settings to check if your podcast app is set to close when not in use.

I have both the 3T and the Mate 9. I was going to sell the 3T but I am now considering going back to it and selling the Mate 9. I have noticed some freezing that goes on when I open apps. It doesn't happen a lot but I do notice sometimes I will click on an app it will freeze for a few seconds and then the app will open. I already reset the phone and it still occurs. Or I will be watching a movie in google movies and I go to exit out of the app and it'll freeze for a few seconds before exiting.
There are also app compatibility issues. When in google movies, if you try to adjust the volume the whole screen will turn black until you close the volume slider.
- Hulu does not work it just shows a black screen. Another user said I need to call Hulu to get it working because the default stream codex they are using doesnt work with the mate 9
- Google voice doesn't work consistently.

nah thats fine. the only time was with the camera... which itself is kind of a slog. Weirdly stuttery when most of the os is smooth. Wonder if there is a memory leak... or does leica tech requires all the 960 to do anything?
emui 5.0 might need a bit more in the oven.
I did have problem previously that runkeeper always closed when I switched to other app. But with latest software it's fixed

Google Maps Issue

Just thought i would make a threat to address the google maps being laggy / unresponsive.
It can usually be fixed by changing the display to HD+ mode if this was bugging anyone like it was myself.
i actually do have that problem- in hd+ mode :/

Thanks, that did help but not ideal. We can't not enjoy the FD+ just because it will slow down Google Maps. Come on Google, sort it out!!
I guess Google blames it on Huawei, and Huawei blames it on Google. The fact remains that these problems were also reported on the Mate 10, 6 months ago and no progress has been made.
Don't have this issue. CLT-L09 variant.
Came here from the P20 forum. I have the same problem on my device.
CLT-L09 here, used maps yesterday with no problems or lag
Good to see it's not just me.
It's laggy as hell for me. Far slower than it was on my LG G4 that I just moved from. So slow and jumpy!
Same issue here, hopefully either Huawei or Google will fix the issue over next week or so. (I can use the workaround till then but it is mildly annoying)
Strange how some people have this issue and others not. Maybe it's region dependent? I have a UK P20 Pro (Three network - dual sim) and I have been using it for navigation for a few days now with no issues. It is pretty much running the same as it did on my Galaxy S8+.
Not noticed lag anywhere so far! Scrolling is better than it was on any of my previous Samsung devices.
My only issue is the stock icons and launcher. It looks too outdated. I'll stick Nova on it soon when I have the time to set it all up.

I have the same phone (P20 Pro Dual SIM from Three), though as per one of the previous comments, mine is a CLT-L29 as opposed to CLT-L09. Could that be the reason?

What exactly is the issue? Is it terrible lag? I want to understand how bad the situation is and when it happens to see if I can reproduce it.
I have the same model as you, so I find it very strange. Are you using a third party launcher or have you done anything else to your device since you set it up?

You can see the glitch here.
I find this strange also as I have never seen it. In fact maps has been super fast for me. I am dual SIM from three UK. CLT-L29 model
It is strange. I have tried to uninstall updates and install it again and they didn't seem to work.
The slowness is in the lag when you try to move the map or even when clicking around or when searching.
With FD+ switched off, it seems to work absolutely fine. Just like it did on my Nexus 6P
Hopefully, it will be fixed soon, so for now I am just going to live with HD+ setting
It's poor if it's been a known issue for 6 months. I'm on EE in the UK (see attached) and I feel cheated if I have to change the screen resolution for a mainstream, hugely popular app to work as it should.
It's made me nearly as unhappy as when I discovered that only one of my P20 Pro's speakers were working.
That's not normal, right?! ?
What software build are you guys on? I am on 8.1.0.103 and I have the maps issue. I saw that an online reviewer at android authority was using software 8.1.0.106 and said they were on "beta" software... lol. Am I on alpha then?
Can anyone confirm if maps works on 8.1.0.106?

Looks like maybe the dual sim works (maybe the firmware version)
I'm on 103 on L 09 (UK single sim) and it took me ages to work out why maps wasn't working.
Hmm, this is even weirder! I am on dual SIM and my firmware version is only 8.1.0.102, which doesn't match with anyone of the versions you are talking above.
I miss my stock android on Nexus already :'(

Annoying Home app refresh

Hey there, first time posting here.
Recently bought this phone, great piece of tech ( the only smartphone under 6.5" worthy of spending money on)
At the beginning the battery was performing poorly, but after the latest July update it has been quite a pleasurable surprise to get great battery life and not having to charge the phone every day. Everything alright till now, untill the phone occasionally started to freeze straight after unlocking it without the possibility to interact with, unless I would lock\unlock it again (really annoying especially when in a hurry).
But the most frustrating (for some weird reason) is the Home app refresh. I'm currently using Nova launcher Prime, and if I return home, it randomly refreshes the launcher looking like there's a memory management issue. Feels like having a really old android phone...
Anyone else having the same problems?
Any fix? (Please don't tell me to switch to the super boring stock launcher).
Thanks for the attention.

how about rooting your phone removing the stock launcher and install the third party one as a system app
