Phone won't boot into recovery and I'm stuck without a ROM - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I tried flashing Cataclysm and it gave me an error "E:Binary not updated" or something like that, I can't remember. That's after I did a system wipe and factory reset. Now, I thought that if I reboot into recovery again, maybe I'll be able to flash it. But no. I boot into recovery, and the TWRP window appears and then the phone reboots and ofcourse I don't have anything installed so I'm stuck without a ROM or without an option to flash a rom. What can I do?
I know I can probably factory reset but I have all my data there, I can't delete everything, please help me somehow.

WHAT? what kind of answer is that? if you're gonna try to help you can't comment with a single word. Don't assume everyone knows what you're talking about.

If you don't even know what fastboot is, you definitely shouldn't be flashing ROMs. See [TUTORIAL] How to flash a factory image | Return to stock | Unroot/SAVE your Nexus 5.

Is iPhone one word or two?

One of the first threads listed in general > sticky roll-up is "adb and fastboot. What is it?"
Everything you need to know about "fastboot" is there.
Fastboot flash TWRP 2.8.1.0. The TWRP newer version doesn't boot for most people

Setup and and fastboot with this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979
After that download factory image here https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
You just have to reboot your phone into bootloader mode, then you unzip the file in your pc and click the script. Wait 2 or 3 minutes and your phone is saved.
If you don't want to delete anything you may try to get some usb adapter to pass other rom for your phone.

Just extract the sh1t out of it until you get the individual img files and you won't need the script which will wipe everything. Just fastboot the system img only

Go to download mode and start from scratch it seems you have a locked boot loader or you didn't delete the dalvic cache which will make you boot loop!! If you are on at&t and Verizon congratulations you have an unlockable boot loader!! You can only flash touchwiz Roms!! (Reason I left Sammy's bs carrier knob polishing) pm me as this isn't the rite forum!!!!! But please go to your device page to get proper support!!!!

Errr...this may sound a little patronizing, but you need to flash boot.img (extract it from the mikrunny zip file) manually using fastboot.
For further details, use search.

You need to extract boot.img from the mikrunny.zip file and place it in your android tools folder (where you have your adb and fastboot batch files)
Then boot into fastboot on your phone, and after making sure your device is detected... type the following command;
fastboot flash boot boot.img
no need to rename anything.
To read about fastboot and adb setup in detail, click on the link under Helpful Links in my signature.
You need to flash the specific boot.img extracted from each particular ROM every time you flash a new ROM in the future.
P.S : I can't see the attachment you posted... maybe you need to reupload it.

Chinese Fastboot Mode?

Hey everyone!
So, I flashed dalvik and bionic optimizations for the OnePlus One that I found over on the Nexus 5. When I booted back up into Android, all of my apps were missing, and everything kept on crashing. So, I booted into Fastboot Mode, but instead of the Cid logo which is usually presented, this message came up:
己进人fastboot...
{

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
The English translation is roughly "You have entered fastboot...". Everything still worked fine. I flashed my system partition back, and everything was okay. But, strangely, the Chinese fastboot message still appears instead of Cid. I kinda want Cid back...does anyone have any solutions? And yes, my phone is the international model.

Well you can also try flashing the logo.bin partition from the CM11S image cyngn has at https://cyngn.com/products/oneplusone/, but if your bootloader is already in chinese, you might just want to flash the device back to full stock using the fastboot image.

Yeah, it will fully revert your device to the factory image. Once you are done, if you have the 64gb model, make sure to flash the userdata_64gb.img manually after otherwise your system will only show as 16gb.

So upon further research, it looks like this is the exact same fastboot screen that OPPO devices use!! Somehow, I've gotten the OPPO fastboot mode one my One! And OnePlus denies involvement with OPPO....

How to root 11.0-XNPH30O?

Problem: I cannot root on 30O.
I have revived my OnePlus One from a soft-brick because I was trying to update from 25R to 30O from the rooted phone. Please refer to forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/help/how-to-update-to-11-0-xnph30o-t2847037for more info. I have learned so much from it.
So after the soft brick, I restored it to 22R. Then an update came in for 25R, I followed the instructions to root the phone, root checker confirmed that I was indeed rooted. (I thought I still had TWRP) so I updated to 30O. I read that the 30O has another update after it, but I still have not received that update yet. When updated to 30O, I realized I can't use titanium back up anymore, and I no longer have SuperUser.
So I followed this video to do the root once again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5O2e_R_TbVg&list=UUk1SpWNzOs4MYmr0uICEntg. But to no avail it doesn't seem to root. When I reboot into recovery mode, TWRP is also gone instead it shows the stock CM11S recovery.
The main reason, I wanted to upgrade to 30O was to be up-to-date, I got my wish! It's kind of ironic. But I still want to be rooted once more. If anyone can help, thank you in advance.
I will check this thread again tomorrow, I thank you for all that XDA members especially vamshi88 has been so persistent in helping me. These have been stepping stones for me as an Android user.

Help rooting Tmobiles sm-n920t 6.0.1

Ive tried several rooting methods and ended up bricking my phone every time. I'm running 6.0.1, build number mmb29k.n920tuvu3dpg1. Recently heard of cf-auto-root but the package they have has a different build number(MMB29K.N920TUVU2DPD1) with the model number and android version being the same. Will the cf-auto-root method work? Or should I be using a different method? (I'm new to this whole rooting thing, came over from iPhone. Jailbreaking was far easier)

You only have to do is flash TWPR in odin (don't forget to uncheck F. Reset time and auto-reboot) before you flash the recovery, download the flashable Super SU and place it on SD , memory, otg or wathever. Just flash recovery, when odin ends, then boot directly into recovery and flash the super su and you are done. if you no want to install custom recovery, you must look for other options

I've read through a lot of the rooting threads here. From what I can see, the older stuff (2015) required flashing a new kernel as well. Is that just not the case anymore? Did I misread?

I have attempted this twice and both times no luck. First attempt I flashed via odin the twrp .tar file and it was blocked by FRP. Had no clue what that was because there is no mention of it in the guide posted. Second attempt I turned on Oem unlocking in settings menu thinking that would work and flashed that successfully but the phone wouldnt boot or go into recovery. I ended up flashing the stock DPG1 firmware to fix the no boot issue and now im back at square one.
Am I missing something? Been rooting and Roming my phones forever but need a little help with this 1 thanks.

It works. I did it again last night after taking the PG1 update. All you need to do is... 1) boot into DL mode. 2) flash the TWRP tar file in the AP slot via Odin. 3) flash SU in recovery. That's it... you're done.

Strange because thats exactly what I did. After flashing TWRP with oem unlock off in Odin all the phone would to is either show the T-mobile logo forever or boot to download mode. I saw something about removing google account. Did you also do that first?

I've did not remove my Google account. I've read that too but believe the circumstances were different.
You said you have OEM unlock ticked off? Should tick it on (so it shows blue)
You may want to dload the official PG1 FW from Sammobile.com and flash from scratch.

NOTE
There are 2 versions for this recovery, SEMI-PERSISTENT & PERSISTENT.
1. Semi-Persistent Recovery
[Works on stock rom and custom rom] Not permanent, requires command in order to boot and needs to reflash it every time you need it and then reflash stock boot.img after using it in order to avoid bootloop.
2. Persistent Recovery
[Works only on custom rom] Permanent, you can boot on it anytime without a command and doesn't need to reflash it and stock boot.img.
Flashing TWRP Recovery
Downloads:
[SEMI-PERSISTENT] TWRP 3.2.1
[PERSISTENT] TWRP 3.2.1
1. You need to be rooted first. Root Guide: Magisk
2. Flash TWRP image (Download link above) using the following command:
Code:
fastboot flash boot_a pathtoimghere
and
Code:
fastboot flash boot_b pathtoimghere
Note: In this state, you will encounter bootloop when you restart your device and proceed to OS. So please, don't.
3. Boot to recovery using the button combination (VOLUME DOWN + POWER BUTTON).
4. Once you are booted in TWRP, you might notice that /date doesn't work. To fix it, you need to decrypt your phone.
For now, flash the vendor.img found here.
5. After step #4, Hit Wipe and Format Date on TWRP, type yes in the dialog, and then reboot to recovery (not system). TWRP will now be useful.
6. If you are on 10f or 10h stock rom download this TWRP then mount vendor and system, flash the zip through TWRP to enable semi-persistant.

Skullpluggery (for polishing the thread)
I hope i didn't forgot anyone , if i did im sry , hit me up and i will add you here.
Why is this TWRP semi persistent
So The g7 is a a/b device meaning it has 2 system paritions etc , but it doesnt have a recovery parition anymore so recovery is now a binary inside of boot.img which gets executed when hitting the button combo , but to have to you need to flash the boot.img containing it , and thats the point the boot.img containig twrp isnt compatible neither to aosp nor to stock meaning your phone would probably stuck in a bootloop or a reboot loop , so only thing we can do for now is flashing back our boot.img after were done with twrp, im working on it and i was able to smack twrp into the stock boot.img but it doesnt work correctly anymore then , I've finished my work on a variant that works without a pc needed
Persistance reached us , YAY
This is ONLY for AOSP OREO AND PIE flash this bootimage using fastboot flash boot_a pathtoimg or fastboot flash boot_b pathtoimg
Then TWRP will be always present no annoying flashes anymore
Can I flash normal zip files with recovery? because not everything is supposed to go.

yes you can do everything once your decrypted , this twrp just wont stick
can someone please tell me if i have the buttons before warning that the bootloader is unlocked or after the warning? it's about booting to recovery after flashing the recovery.img. Unfortunately, I did not manage it yesterday.
should you flash at step 4 the file on the recovery, or via adb sideload?
hello mate long time no chat lol thinking of getting the g7 got one plus 6 at min will the fix for the one plus that makes the recovery stick work on this ?
will the error be corrected over time? because after the first reboot into the system the recovery disappeared again. I would like to boot again into recovery after being in the system, it no longer exists. I followed everything according to instructions

Great to know development is picking up on this device. Waiting for supplies to hit the rest of the world so I can get an European variant. ** Thumbs Up **
stupid question but does the locked bootloader on usa versions disallow booting unsigned images over "fastboot boot" command also?
