Hello All,
I'm hoping someone out there can help me answer this question because countless hours of searching on the internet so far haven't so now I will turn to the experts here. Here's a brief background of the situation.
I recently switched from a Palm Treo 700wx on a plan that included Phone as Modem on Sprint to an Sprint Htc Hero on an unlimited data plan that doesn't allow tethering. Unfortunately for those of us left that use tethering Sprint doesn't even allow one to pay extra for it. I know that that Hero is capable of tethering using PdaNet and I enjoyed using PdaNet on my Treo.
So now getting to the questions. I would like to know if anyone knows if cell phone companies either Sprint or any other provider can actually tell when your using your phone as a modem say as long as you don't abuse it by staying under 5gbs a month? Does anyone know how PdaNet actually works? In other words does it appear that your actually just downloading data to your phone when really your also transferring it to a laptop?
Does anyone know if it is possible to use a Sprint Touch Pro on Verizon WITHOUT activating a data plan? I found directions on how to hack the phone to work on Verizon, but would just like to use Wifi instead of the $30 data plan. Thank you.

call verizon and ask if they will even add your meid to their database.
I talked to Verizon a while back and they insisted up and down that there was no way to add a smartphone manufactured after November 08 without a data plan. I didn't ask anything about phones from other providers so as not to arouse any suspicion.
Basically you just have to call in and see if you could trick them into activating the phone on their service. The IMEI gives the make and model of the phone away though, but perhaps they won't check.
That's a bit of a gamble to buy the phone not knowing if it will work. Going through a person instead of the site will probably get better results though! Hopefully someone here who has done this successfully will chime in
Hello guys,
If this thread is in the wrong place then I do apologise, anyway...
I have a Nexus 7 and I want to be able to connect to the internet when I am not in a Wi-Fi area. To do this I use the hotspot feature on my iPhone. Does anyone know if this costs money?
Thanks in advanced
Rob
Like Sewrizer said you should call your carrier and check with them. I also heard of apps that will allow you to hide the fact that you are tethering... but not sure how effective that is.
For me I'm on an unlimited plan and the carrier doesn't care if I tether or not. I never understood why carriers charge more for tethering anyways, especially for limited plans. If I'm paying for a 10 GB plan, then I should be able to use that 10 GB however I want!
I know there are other posts that ask that question but nothing recent. So...
Here is what I have:
Verizon - w/unlimited data
HTC Rezound - unlocked, rooted, ROM'd, NO S-off
The Portable Wi-Fi hotspot function of my phone is working flawlessly right now. That is very important. I would appreciate any suggestions for a new phone. It doesn't have to be something currently out. It could be something coming down the road.
There are three requirements:
I must be able to enable the Portable Wi-Fi hotspot, and (able to enable, funny)
Acquiring this phone must not affect my unlimited data plan at Verizon, and
It must an Android phone
If anyone has recommendations concerning upgrading your phone at Verizon without jeopardizing an unlimited plan please add that as well.
Thank you in advance for reading my request.

your budget?
i dont think verizon does unlimited plans anymore. but if your fine with rooting a phone that your going to use for phone purposes you can wifi tether for free i think any phone would be fine for you, gonna be maybe a little more specific on what you want. i mean like screen size, battery life, Cpu.

I have an unlimited data plan. I am grandfathered in to it. Believe me, they would love to get that from me (and everyone else that has one). It's a matter of being very careful about what changes are made to your plan or phone as they are always looking for a way to screw ya out of it.
So, the requirements I mentioned above are still good. I need a new phone that I can root and enable the native Portable Wi-Fi hotspot so as to utilize my unlimited data plan. And, beyond that, if you or anyone else has any inside information, a new phone that wont require me to change my plan or otherwise jeopardize my current plan with unlimited data.
As for budget, it doesn't really matter. I can get what I need to get.
Thanks for the post...

hmmm you might have to do a bunch of research into it then.
I just was in a similar situation...I went with an HTC one from Tmobile even though Im on ATT...covers mostly all the networks (I travel internationally a fair amount), once you unlock it and is easy to root. No complaints so far
Hey, guys:
So...I've just moved into a (very) rural area... and I need Internet Access at a decent speed (forget Dish...the Ping return is ridiculous.)
I have a LOS to a Cell Tower 4.1 miles away.
I've been using my Phone for a Hotspot...but my Sprint Plan is only good for 40GB (I need at *least* double that...and it's not offered.)
I want to buy a dedicated Tablet *just* to provide WiFi to the house (Sprint allows unlimited Data on Tablets; but only 5GB through WiFi Tethering.)
Since I can't (and IMHO shouldn't have to) afford a $400-800 monthly bill, what I need is a way to pull the Data and send it that *doesn't* use the native Hotspot (that is monitored by Sprint.)
Any suggestions on Hardware, Firmware, and/or Apps that might help me would be awesome; 'cause I've tried searching...and the answers I've found are either contradictory, incomplete, or useless (or mebbe I'm just not smart-enough :silly: )
Thanks in advance!
*bump* in the hope that someone will bite...
