[Q] WhatsApp/Messenger Notifications - Android 5.0.1 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I just upgraded to Android 5.0.1 , and i noticed something different with my notifications.
Instead of just appearing at the top black bar, all my notifications started appearing with a large white background drop down from the top. (See the screenshot).

This happens on both WhatsApp and Android Messenger App.
I changed it to Priority Interruption, but it also continued to appear.
Am i able to disable this, or revert to the old way of notification??
It seems like whoever is using my phone can now see all my messages as they come in.
Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it...
But i do want the notifications to appear at the lock screen, and also the WhatsApp icon to be on the top when there is a message.
I'm just wondering why nobody seems to notice that the notifications looks different from before?

Becouse android 5.0 has new API ,it same facebook and facebook messenger, they have new notifications same it .I dont know how can close in apps . OS settings sound&notification you can find maybe or wait apps update...

Try that: Go to settings>Apps>tap on whatsapp and if there is a checkbox with "heads up", disable it.
I don't know if that works on stock but all custom roms I've tried so far had it
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app

With Android 5.0 Lollipop (and buried in 4.4 source code), Google introduced Heads Up notifications (what you're seeing), mainly for important notifications such as calls, emails and texts. There is a flag an app can add to a notification so it pops up with a Heads Up notification instead of only appearing in your status bar. WhatsApp and Messenger simply have the flag appended to the notifications because they assume your messages are important.
If a ROM has Slim's take on Heads Up merged in, one can force enable/disable Heads Up for specific apps instead of allowing the app developer to choose if they're important enough, which is why @bm19981217 has that option.

@Lethargy Oh ok...
But why do Lollipop roms have that feature? I'm quite sure some Lollipop roms I tried have that checkbox but I might be wrong
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app

Hmmm.. but im using stock rom... 5.01 OTA update (sideloaded though).
I went to android settings --> Apps --> Whatsapp
but i didnt see any "heads up" check box. I only see "Show notifications".
Doesnt seem to be that option.
Can i download/install Slim's take on heads up separately? Is there such an app?
If not, i guess i can only wait for whatsapp to release an update.

Lots of people, me included, don't like this heads up feature without some kind of control. See below.

Custom ROMs add the feature and not all ROMs are the same.

That's why we have custom ROMs.

[Q] Dual Message indicator

I've somehow gotten two message indicators that both pop up when I get a text.
It has stayed through fresh, aloysius, and it's now on CM6 RC1.
I think it originated when I flashed ZenHero, but I'm not 100% sure on that one.
When I pulldown the taskbar and click the white icon, it takes me to my messages, but stays in my notifications bar.
When I click the message icon (smiley face folder), it opens my message and then goes away.
But the white envelope still stays.
I just want to know how to get that damn white one to never come up again.
I've included some screenies.
PLEASE help me!
I'm going nuts hearing 2 message alerts every time i get a text!

r u using a third party app like handcent or chomp SMS. If so u have to turn off the notification in the stock app.
if not look in the stock app settings and c how the reports r comming in.
im using the stock app.
if i turn off the indicator from there, i only get the white one.
it must've been something i flashed.
1. Wrong forum
2. If it's not Handcent or ChompSMS, have you installed SMS Popup?
1. Sorry
2. I think I did WAAAAY back.
Any way to undo what i did?
At one short moment, I had handcent. Hated it.
But I think I flashed a new rom without deleting sms popup.
It's no longer installed now.
Possible for the settings to have stuck?
ok. tried reinstalling sms popup and then uninstalling.
no avail.

Use titanium backup to uninstall sms pop-up for good
Sent from my HTC Hero running froyo: take that, Sprint!
Hit Menu->Settings->Applications now look for any 3rd party sms app and uninstall if you find any. Otherwise try going to your messaging app and clearing all the data and caches. My last option would be to reboot into recovery and fix apk uid mismatches. Not quite sure what the last one does in technical terms but in the past minor quirkes have been fixed by doing that. One thing is for sure though that you have two separate apps receiving incoming msges, if both lead to the default messaging app try disabling notifications in your default messaging app and see if you still get one notification. Just some ideas.
You must have the stock Android SMS app and the HTC SMS app. you need to disable one of them.
Which SMS app is which?
I want to disable the white icon one.

The stock android sms is the black smily face.
and how do i go about disabling one of them?
I've tried looking around the phone with adb shell to no avail (not that I really know what I'm looking for anyways!).
I know my way around pretty well, but some help would be GREATLY appreciated.
TiBackup was no help. Didn't see any remnants of SMS popup laying around. Do I do anything special?
Next step is trying the apk mismatches.
thanks so far for all the suggestions
I found it.
It was beautiful SMS from the bw pack 2.
i used the "dev tools" app in CM6 to see running processes.
had a text sent to me, and saw what was new that popped into the list.
wasn't even running, yet it made that icon pop-up.
Thanks for all of the advice guys.
You're the best.

Is there any way to customize Heads-up notifications? I can hide "sensitive" information from lock-screen notifications, can it also be done to "regular" notifications? I mean, if someone watching pics in my gallery I don't want him to see incoming message sender's name etc.
Confirmed this method is working with Sabermod CM12 for OnePlus One! So I am guessing it should also work with other CM 12 builds.
Thank you so much for very useful app.
Thanks!
It worked like a charm in SM-N9005 w/ CM12 (Android 5.0.2).

in settings. db - secure - lock_screen_allow_private_notifications , turn to 0 . You will get a notification on lock screen , but for example in WhatsApp , there is no name of the sender and no sent text .

Very good! My only request would be to use the notification ticker (as pre-Lollipop versions of Android used), rather than only show the icon of the app. Could you please add this feature, even if it's a Pro-only feature? There is another app that mimics the notification ticker (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.dvdh.notif.ticker), but these two apps don't work together. Yours take priority so the other one won't show the text. Btw, I'm using this on a Galaxy S6 Edge. Thanks!

Samsung's New Notification/Lockscreen App

Hey all.. I don't think I've seen a post about this so I thought I'd be the first to give you all a heads-up on Samsung's new lock app called Good Lock. It's a fairly new app and I'm sure they'll make improvements. It pretty much changes your lockscreen, notifications tray, and recent tabs. Let me know what you think of the app.
**Apparently some rooted users are having various problems (constant reboot and randomly uninstalls itself), so keep that in mind...

I downloaded this today, and so far I like it! I wasn't sure at first, but the more that I use it, the more I enjoy it.
I like the new notifications menu. Looks a lot like stock Android. Wish u could use a custom lockscreen wallpaper, but besides that, it's pretty cool! I'm surprised that Samsung created something like this.
To answer your question, I'm pretty sure that those icons are from a previous theme. I haven't found any icon customization with this app
I tried the app, but it uninstalled itself after a bit playing around with it. It looked better than the stock lock screen and notification area (although I don't like the colours) and I'd like to keep the app. Is there a way to prevent that the app is automatically uninstalled?
In Nova Launcher pulling notification bar down is not flawless if you use gesture...
Just a warning that it doesn't work with rooted devices. I made the mistake of installing it on my rooted S7 and it caused constant reboots.
I've also uninstalled in for ithe time being because it didn't work with my Samsung led case. it kept asking for location. I've never had the uninstall problem or reboot problem. you can change the lockscreen by going to Samsung settings. I really hope they polish the app a bit more.
Sent from my SM-G930T using Tapatalk
So far, I'm liking Good Lock. just a couple weird things. Looks like you no longer can customize the quicksettings tiles, and the recent apps switcher is much better, but if you use the button to bring it up and dismiss it (also using the button) then it goes to the Home App instead of the app I was in.

Are you rooted? If not, that explains why the reboot issue would never have happen for you.
Downloading now.
I tried it and uninstalled within minutes. The recent apps is horrible - separate chrome tabs are now nameless icons making it useless to find the tab you wanted, and I like having a preview of the open apps. Also, as mentioned, the MM notification draw pulldown bug in Nova is present, which drives me insane. And no lockscreen wallpaper choices, no thanks. The only reason I'd want to use it is the more stock android look, and that you can finally double tap a notification on the lockscreen to open it, which should be a thing on the current lockscreen anyway.

Good Lock App Alternative TW UI 6.0.1

This thread has already been started in the general section but this seemed like a more appropriate place for it.
Samsung released an alternative UI for Touchwiz 6.0.1 that is available on the Galaxy Store for the Galaxy S7. I, however, have been using this for some time now on the N910P.
All you have to do is download the APK and install as normal. Your device will say that it needs to reboot. Once rebooted the new UI will be in place.
For any modifications merely swipe the notification bar down twice and you will see a second settings button. From there you can modify the theme and lockscreen or uninstall.
This new UI seems to change the lockscreen, recent menu and the notification pull down. See screenshots below.
Note: To set lockscreen picture, do so from your normal settings menu.
Note: Fingerprint lock on the lockscreen has not been working but I have not tested it on the update.

Another Note: I did not create this, I merely downloaded, installed and then shared with you guys. I believe Samsung created it...

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing but when I tried it was taking too much time so I just went with what was easiest lol.

I am using nova launcher and fingerprint scanner and all if them stops working and when I tap on settings the screen goes black.
When I go to Samsung apps store this message appears

Here is a video on the sprint version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLU7KW0E2m0 and it doesn't work for you because of the finger print unlock. That breaks it on the note 4 !

So why the error message said that it's not compatible with my device.
And after I installed it and reboot my device I couldn't see any icons, also when I tried to go to settings the screen went black.
I think not only fingerprint lock issue, also I am using nova launcher not TouchWiz.
So If any developer could port this app it will be better.
There are some users also faced the same issues that I faced.
