I, personally, loved the MIUI & CyanogenMod but they, in my opinion, have their downfalls.
MIUI: No app drawer, I like having just 1 page on the homescreen & all the excess apps/games in the drawer, but its layout (customization options (lockscreen/homescreen wallpaper, themed messaging app), bootlogo, etc.) is great but, the worst part was the simple fact that it would be fine over night, then the next day it started booting out the wifi, phone or even put my phone into airplane mode which I could not get out of no matter how many reboots or battery pulls I did.
CyanogenMod: No texting or phone calls at all, it has been awhile since I used it but it either could send & not receive texts/calls or vice-versa, either way just like w/ MIUI, its awesome in every other aspect.
I was just wondering if there are any other custom ROMs for the Samsung Mesmerize SCH-i500, in particular, that are similar to those two, themed and/or fully customizable options, I can't think of the words I'm looking for, I guess a standalone custom ROM that is FULLY STABLE (calls, texts, wifi, bluetooth, no AUTOMATIC airplane mode, etc. I mean EVERYTHING FULLY WORKING) for my, above mentioned, phone, does not have to be debloated/dexed/deodexed, either way.
i am running miui 1.12.9 with glitch kernel v13.1 EH09 radio
for what i use it all works. sms, bt, mms (wifi off), phone, alarm clock, etc..
miui control panel for the app drawer feature. maybe if you had an older version you might want to check out this newer one.
but as for other roms i have not tried any, if i get bored i might try something else but not until i read up on it so i know what im getting into.

I was using MIUI.us_mesmerizemtd_1.12.9_Eng_Deo_ZipA_Signed_dfgas-911fix and it was about 2:30 in the morning when I finally fully restored to stock rooted 2.3.4 Gingerbread, wiped data, cache partition dalvik cache and finally rebooted after installing MIUI, I finally went to sleep at 5 in the morning after setting it all up.
I awoke at about noon & it was still running fine but I ran busybox installer so I could update the su binary & had to reboot, this was roughly between 3 - 3:30 in the afternoon &, after reboot, it just started f***ing up.
Absolutely no phone signal at all, I tried the phone activation code but it was never activated, wifi, even right next to the router, was not detected, tried a few reboots but nothing, it kept saying it was in airplane mode, when I opened the notification bar, deactivated airplane mode, it never turned back on again but only in the notification bar, in the settings menu, after turning it off & exiting the menu or going to another menu, regardless if it was from within the settings menu or not it automatically switched back on when I returned back to it, I don't know, if I can get it to work, I can live without the app drawer, its just that good to me.
I even tried the MIUI360P_ENHv3.1_universal_s enhancer thing but that just mad it so that, I forgot exactly what it was called, something about com.android.phone. (something) process kept having to be force closed but every time I pressed force close within 2 or 3 seconds it did it again & it kept repeating this over & over again, I had to pull the battery just to get out of it, but by what I saw in the forums after I tried it, its actually meant for Samsung Galaxy S II I9000, whereas I have the Samsung Galaxy S I i500, I kind of rushed into it in the hopes that it would fix the issues.
So I had a Note previously, WhatsApp worked perfectly fine.
I notice now that there are a lot of weird notification issues now. I ran some tests and this is what I've found.
Screen On - Clear all apps with Task Manager. Exit to home screen. Meaning, WhatsApp is not running in the background, not running at all. I use my girlfriends phone to send me 10 + messages. I get NO pushed messages, no notifications. Nothing happens. I then launch the app and see that I have 10+ unread messages under her name. I click to read the messages, and exit back to the home screen (either back arrow or home button). I send another message from her phone, and NOW I see the notifications.
Screen Off - (sleeping but app is still in the background) - I send a message from her phone, get NO push notification. But... as soon as I hit the power button to light up the screen (wake from sleep), I get the notification in the bar. I read the message, clear the notification bar.. then put the phone back to sleep. Same thing happens. While the screen is off, I get no push notifications until I turn on the screen.
Anyone having weird issues with WhatsApp? It can't be the app because it works perfectly normal on my Samsung Note. I'm thinking ICS broke it some how.
The notifications works fine for me with whatsapp. The only thing is that when I hit clear in the notification bar and haven't read the actual message, the notification will reappear again.

Same thing here just happened with me on my HTC ONE S , if screen if off and whatsapp is running i get no notification, however as soon as i press the power button immediately i get notified and the weird thing is the notification sound is the default ringtone while in whatsapp settings i have another tone set. Whatsapp was working fine. I tried reinstalling, force stopping, rebooting.
My phone is stock rom no root any help would be appreciated
EDIT (SOLVED): Disable Fast Boot under power options in settings, disabling it fixed my problem (Read it somewhere online)
I have problems with notifications when wifi is on. No problems w/out wifi
I have exact same issue on my Xperia Arc...with or without Wifi...I have ICS 4.0.3
I think it is phone independent issue...
i think you all should stop closing all apps from the task manager and everything would be fine.
you cant shut down all apps and then expect from them to work.
(at004 solution could help too)
Sorry to revive this thread, but I have a solution to the problem (I think) and I thought I might share it.
Some routers flag push messages as "Anonymous Internet Requests" which the NAT dismisses. This will effectively kill push and you'll only get your messages on the next sync.
To counter this problem you can forward the google push port to your phone.
You'll need a static IP for the phone. The port Google uses for push messages is 5228 on TCP.
Good luck with your problems!
ahh.. i got the notification problem.. there is no sound or vibrate for incoming whatsapp messages..
this happen affter i update the apps.. damn!

This happens on my brand new nexus 4
This used to happen way back when I first got my One X, but it is solved now. I thought it was because I had rooted and gone with a newer build, but I got a replacement One X stock with 2.20 and notifications work fine when screen is off.
Same issue in my nexus 4
I'm facing the same issue in my nexus 4.But this is applicable to the application which having the same properties of WhatsApp.For eg Viber.
When we are in the screen of Whats App and Viber i'm getting the notification otherwise not..
I also noticed one more thing unless we open the application the data notification in the signal bar is idle. I don't why its like that.Usually it should be always active.

Same here, with the same phone and running CyanogenMod 7.2.0.
Also seeking help on the same issue.
Seems there's no point to use this "instant" messager with this defect.
Go and complain with the makers of it as you have paid for it and using a custom ROM is 100% supported...
This is a users forum guys. If you install custom ROM some things may not work as on stock ROM.
We share experience and knowledge but not complaining about the product or demanding for a solution.
Go to WhatsApp website and tell them about the issue. I doubt they read this post.

Push notifications while phone is sleeping - are these commonly disabled by default in custom roms as a battery saving feature? I've tried Embryo 5.1, Majick-Wizz R3, and CM10 Alpha (all using the recommended kernels/radios, flashing using CWM Touch 6.0.1.2 v12.5), all seem to have the same "issue" where I don't get push notifications from things like Gmail or third party apps while the phone is sleeping. As soon as I wake the phone, the notifications come in.
I couldn't really find anyone on this forum or anywhere else on this issue, except for cases with the HTC Evo, which leads me to believe it's common knowledge whatever is causing this or how to fix it, but I'm new here and this is escaping me completely...
Thanks for any help!
I get push notifications for my email account all the time, and when I've tested other apps (Facebook, Twitter, news apps, etc.) they've always worked there as well. This is on several ROMs, including MW (all three releases), SkyICS 4.2F6 and CM9.
Are you restoring system data from Tibu, by chance? That's all I can think of from a practical perspective that would carry the problem across ROMs, but I'm not a dev and can't begin to guess at any potentially more difficult solutions.
I actually don't restore any data from anywhere except Google auto settings backup. These are all fresh installs.
Edit to add: the notifications seem to work until the screen has been off for 10+ minutes. Also they worked on stock rom.
Edit2: Looks like it may have to do with the WiFi. Made sure the WiFi policy was set to remain connected while sleeping, but that setting doesn't appear to be working. Disabled WiFi and let phone sleep for 10 mins and sent emails to test, and notifications worked.
Edit3: Tried disabling/enabling the WiFi sleep settings in various ways to see if a setting was stuck somewhere, to no avail... Flashed InstigatorX 6.3.4, no dice. It's definitely the WiFi going to sleep though. Confirmed that if WiFi is turned off, all works well. Also, upon waking the phone, it takes a few seconds for network connectivity to start working again (if WiFi is enabled). How do I get this setting to stick?!
Update: Ok, so I just reflashed with all of the Google backup stuff turned off, and tested, still not working.
I'm really running out of ideas here. It's not that I'm unwilling to try something, I just literally can't think of anything else to try...
EDIT: So I just downloaded an app for which the purpose is to keep WiFi awake at all times, and it happens that the app also checks your WiFi sleep policy setting for you. In my case, it told me that i had WiFi set to disable when the phone is sleeping (despite that not being the case). I suppose this fully confirms that the issue is the setting isn't sticking. I let the app change that setting for me then uninstalled the app, going to test throughout the day tomorrow. In the meantime, is there a relatively harmless way to manually check whatever configuration file holds this policy setting?
So I'm on Liquid pre-RC based on Cm10 now and it seems to be working intermittently. The only way I can get it working consistently so far is installing an app built for this purpose. Am I really the only one experiencing this issue with custom roms?

I don't really have an answer for you, but I can at least tell you that you're not crazy. I have definitely noticed this happen where I will wake up my phone and instantly be hit with email notifications. However, it didn't happen every time like that. And to be honest, I think my push Gmail worked fine; it was my pull email that would do it to me. That was on CM9. I don't think I've noticed it happen since I've been on MW.

i get no notification LED or sound when i receive a message. but, when i unlock my phone, instantly the LED and sound go off, and in the message in hangouts it will show how long before the message was actually sent (eg. 6 mins ago). i'm running 4.4.2 stock/rooted. seems like a new problem since the update from 4.4.1 to 4.4.2, and the only other thing i can think of that changed was i installed xposed framework and a couple modules that didn't have anything to do with notifications, then i uninstalled everything when i realized it wasn't going to be able to do what i thought. any thoughts?

nope. i did just install airdroid recently though. could that be affecting this somehow?
/I've never had this problem with Hangouts before, but now if I am SMSing a person, and I put my phone down, I won't get any notification of their next texts, even if my screen goes to sleep. I keep missing messages because of this and it just started happening recently, since I got my new Note Edge. (Though, I also updated all my apps with the new phone, so it could be an app update and not something in particular with the phone. ) My GF says she is having a similar problem actually. Any settings I'm missing or fixes I need to look into? Also, is there a way to get persistent notifications back?
I've noticed this as well. Annoying
