Different Screen Qualities in each Nexus 5?!? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
my stepfather just bought a new Nexus 5 directly from the google play store as I did half a year ago.
At a direct comparison of both phones I recognized a huge difference between both displays.
At the attached pic you'll see his brand new Nexus on the left hand side and mine on the right. I'll hope the quality fits to show what I mean.
As you can see the nexus on the right is much more "snow" white compared to the "beige" looking white on the left.
Both brightness setting is to maximum. Power saving mode is disabled on both too. The only difference is stock rom on the left and cataclysm rom on the right.
Is that normal or better to ask, is it possible that the display quality can various that much?!?
I know each phone is slightly different produced but I think this is a huge difference..
Thanks for any reply ?

Display quality varies. Many people report yellow screens.

Thanks for answering so quick! I never thought that there is a big difference ?
In your opinion, any chance of a warranty case?!?

Give it a few weeks before you try the RMA route. A lot of folks have said that it gets better with time. I don't really buy into any electronic "burn-in times" but you've got nothing to loose at this point. Also people have RMA'd and gotten a device that looked worse.

Not really. You're likely to get a worse one

Some said it was the glue and it got better. Others just corrected it with kernel profiles.
No idea what the cause is myself.

Thanks for the suggestion! ?

People have been reporting screen color variances/yellow tint since the device first came out over a year ago. Even if Google will allow it, exchanging the device isn't likely to yield better results. Color calibration can be changed with a custom kernel. The simplest way to correct for yellow tint would be to flash ElementalX kernel with the option for cooler color profile enabled.

Am I unlucky with screen bleed?

I've went through about 5 different phones and they all have the same screen bleed. Tried multiple stores in case they were from the same batch. Am I just unlucky? Or do all G2X have screen bleeds and the ones that report they don't really arent as picky as I am?
Your picky.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
the mythical perfect screen you hunt doesn't exist
you're clearly being too picky. my screen has a bit of bleed, but i'll be keeping it because i'm never watching a solid black screen, at full brightness, in a dark room. so it doesnt really matter that much to me.
You're not unlucky, and you're not too picky. I just returned my 3rd g2x today because of backlight bleeding. All 3 were so bad that the bleeds were reaching into the center of the screen. Despite what people say about 'You can't see it unless you're in the dark' is not completely true. The last 2 phones had a stripe of brown across the bottom that was blurring out text at the lower half the screen when on a white background. The 3rd was outright yellow.
Upon returning my 3rd, the manager at the store pulled about the remaining 5 they had in stock. She went in the back and checked all 5 in the dark, and all of them had screen bleeding worst than the one I was returing. The manager agreed that it was unacceptable and sent all 5 back. She's calling me when the next shipment comes in, and she's going to personally go through every phone until she finds one that works right.
As for being too picky, that's bull. These guys on the forums will tell you you're being overboard, but the phone is $500 or $199 and a 2 year contract. I know some people have cash to throw around, and the value of the dollar means nothing. But for me, $200 is a lot of money, 2 years of my life is a lot of time, and for me to just accept something that isn't built right because i'm being "too picky" is a load of crap.
If this was a $5000 tv I bet you'd be singing a different tune, but since it's a $500 phone I should just suck it up. Screw that, i'll return 80 of them if I have to. Hopefully someone at corporate will get the hint and call LG about it.
The manager told me that LG already notified all the T-Mobile reps to make them aware of it. So it's not just a matter of pickiness, this a clear cut QA issue on LG's end.
Backlight bleeding is common. It's common because of poor production, and absolutely no QA in Korea. They're shipping these phones out before the glue finishes drying, and thus we're left with crap. I read another post on here that a guy had glue around the edges of the screen. LG needs to get it together, this is out of hand.
The phone is sexy though, and I suggest returning it until you get the one that works right. I've considered giving up and waiting for another, but all the other phones coming up have custom roms and locked bootloaders. I'm uninterested.

I saw a post a few days ago of someone who went to replace their phone in the store. They tested the new one in the store and were satisfied, but then got home and locked themselves in a closet or something and saw some bleed and they were upset.
If you're like this person, then ya, you're way too picky. This is an LCD screen, not LED.

LG Electronics also makes the iPhone 4 LCD. And it doesn't have this issue.
I don't understand why anyone would accept what is for certain a quality issue. Do you really just not care that much? I have had many phones over the years and none of them have had these issues. I even pulled all of them back out (yes I have kept them all) and checked them under the exact same conditions as the g2x I sent back yesterday. Do you know how many of them had screen bleed? ZERO none of them. I'm not talking about standard extra defused light coming through an LCD. I'm talking about multiple spots were light was coming through because it simply wasn't sealed correctly.
To the people saying you are being too picky or it doesn't matter or they are all like that either don't know what they are talking about, saying that because they don't like you, or just like to be screwed out of their money.
Have a little pride and demand that it is right. I will sent back every single phone I get until I get one that is correctly built.
i paid 500 for mine but i just don't wanna go there get another one and have it be worse than mine and then make it an issue for me to keep going back till i get a good one since the one i have has been straight aside from the minor backlight issue which i can't see unless im in the dark on that black screen
I have to say that my first phone had it bad. I could tell in every app I tried. I saw it before there were threads like these. I returned it.
I did however buy one from the store and went into the neighboring store's bathroom with the light off, total darkness and the screen looked good.
Obviously these are the first batch and may not be perfect but I'd like to think "most" are under normal conditions. I know I wouldn't stand for it. The screen is something you always will use. It would bother me.
If your store doesn't have a good one, then don't buy it. I guess it is save to say there are batches of bad phones out there. The demo unit at the store near me looked great compared to the SGS4G sitting next to it and there were no bleeding. My unit was clean too.
I'd recommend wearing a hoodie and checking before you leave.

Look, I'm not saying that there isn't an issue, because I've seen several picks of completely unacceptable bleed. I'm simply saying don't expect to have absolutely no bleed.

Yea my neighbor has an iPhone 4 and I can see some. Nothing major and he probably doesn't even notice it. I think every LCD phone I had, had some bleeding... hence why I love my Nexus One Amoled... but it had its problems too.
I'd rather have a small bleed then no multitouch or a locked bootloader
out of 5 g2x I've seen, all of them had similar bleeds (similar bleed size, similar pattern at each corner), with 1 of them being the worst. All 5 of them are pretty much the same.
with that being said, I think you should really just settle with one. NOT because I am saying you are picky, but that statistically the chance of getting one with minimal bleed is very, very, very low.
I truly have no idea how some people on this forum are getting g2x's with almost no bleed. If you ask me, it's either we have different judgment, or they just don't test their devices in a totally dark room with >50% phone brightness.

So what is your point? The light bleed existed on the initial batch of iPhone 4's, people complained, and the manufacturing process was fixed. If people don't complain then it won't get fixed. If LG can fix it for the iphone, they can fix it for this phone.
i had to go into my dark room and set my screen to 100% to see any bleed...but how often will you keep your screen at full brightness in complete dark? when it's dark i dim my screen, the bleed is nearly impossible to see in typical conditions.
Each of the phones I had i didnt look at them in a completely dark room. But just looking at the screen under normal office light at 50% display and they were all quite noticable. I dont think I'm being too unreasonable but maybe I am.
I think i'll just suck it up and live with it. I honestly wouldnt mind it if the bleeding is in the top two corners where its generally the white status bar but its pretty noticeable in the bottm two. I'll probably just end up waiting until HTC Sensation comes out and sell this.

Nice try again. Apparently you paid no attention to the date of the posts on that thread. The initial post was 4 days ago (3 when I initially made mention of it).
Of course, I must also point out that your initial claim was that iphone4s "do not have this problem". They definitely have had this "problem" and sill do.
Just give up or admit you're wrong. Quit clinging to this completely inaccurate claim.

Honestly I didn't notice that. I stand corrected!
I'm sorry to ask such a tyro question. What is screen bleed? What does it look like?

[Q] Has it been long enough?

With all the haters of either TMO or G2X I wanted to start another kind of thread to ask the question of. Has it been long enough to for TMO to refresh their G2X's so I can walk into a store or amazon and get my G2X back. I loved the crap out of that phone and the only issue had was the bleed screen. How can one tell when was the manufacturing date?
I doubt it.

Manufacture date is on the sticker on the box.
also no, I dont think so if screen bleed is your issue. I just got one yesterday, it has a little bleed (screen bleed was never a issue for me, I dont care). It has a 4/24 date on the sticker... So Id say wait a while longer...
as far as reboots. Ive never had one. I personally think its a app the cpu dont like or something. And look at almost any other phone forum. Theres always complaints about reboots. so meh..

I can assure you that the reboot/lockup issue is real and not due to a specific app. I was getting these before I installed a single thing. In fact, the reboot issue has been confirmed by LG themselves, so I wouldn't dismiss it so quickly.
The screen bleed, on the other hand, I fully agree. My unit has screen bleed, but it's really not a big deal. I never see it during regular usage (and it's worse than many others I've seen on here).
I am having screen bleed in two corners, but honestly it doesn't bother me. nearly a week since I bought this phone, not even one reboot.this phone is rock solid and super fast.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
My 14 days are up tomorrow... and I'm keeping my G2x.
I have light bleed on the top two corners and a little along the right side. It is noticeable but what the heck, nothing is perfect. I think coming from a Nexus One with it's inky blacks spoiled me a little, though I must say I would not put up with this level of bleed (clouding as it's called) on a new TV.
The rest of my experience has been trouble free, no reboots or any other issues. Wifi calling works great, the phone is fast as hell and the feel in hand is rock solid. Give this phone a top tier screen and it's the best phone ever made fer sure.
Oh, and I've never had any problems with T-Mobile service, either in Denver on my WinMo Wing or in the Seattle area on a series of Android devices. I'm actually kind of a T-Mo fanboy.
I've got an RMA coming from Tmo customer service arriving either today or tomorrow for a screen bleeder.
I'm going to open it, pop in battery and sim and check out the bleed.
If it's only slightly or not better at all, I'm keeping my original.
Like others have said, I only see it in the dark with a black screen...not really a big deal in the whole scheme of things.
Other than that, the unit I currently have is working flawlessly...and battery life is superb for me.

My new refurb from tmo

So I had to get a refurb do to a spill accident I had with my original phone. My original phone was great, no complaints and the screen bleed was barely noticeable. Now with the new one its worse but still not really noticeable during normal use. How ever I figured I would take some pics of it to see how it compares to others on here before I go and try out another refurb. What do you guys think, is this the normal bleed everyone has or is this pretty bad?
That kind of looks like my first g2x. I will be getting my refurb one a bit later today from asurion, I just hope its not any worse than what I had before.

I would say keep it, it doesn't look too bad, and it doesn't really get in the way unless you watch a lot of movies. I received my refurb today and it is worse than what I had. This one has noticeable white spots on both upper corners instead of one like my original.

Probably stuck or dead pixel

Hi guys, yesterday i recieved my OPO and i noticed that there is a little dark point ( watchable only on white screen) which probably is a stuck or dead pixel. The point is very very little and amost unwatchable during normal use , but i m very finicky......what can i do? Is possible to obtain a replacement of the phone for only one pixel? Thanks for your suggestions!!!
Only OnePlus can answer that question, there's no point asking here because nobody here is an employee of OnePlus. If it is defective though, they should cover it under warranty.

But no one bere with a similar situation? Just no know if there is a possibility to obtain the change. I have already opened a ticket on OPO official site, but no reply at now.
Basic warranty policy states that if a device is defective out of the factory you are entitled to a replacement.

I have a dead pixel too - but honestly - is it worth making such a big deal out of it?! Why don't you just live with it and save you all the trouble? It's not worth it in my opinion - what if you get another device with a yellow band in exchange? That would be worse wouldn't it? There are bigger problems than just one dead pixel - if it were green all the time that would be much worse.

ugh I have the same situation with my new oneplus one, this didnt happen on my old one but there is a dead/stuck pixel near the top that is green usuallly very hard to notice but sticks out like a sore thumb on black backgrounds. i am just going to deal with it unless it gets much worse is there any way to fix it short of replacing the hardware?
my co-worker has 1 stuck pixel, like you, its only visible on a white background. OPO's defective policy is only for 3 pixels or more. he ended up selling it on craigslist for the price he bought it at.
I have the exact same issue and feel the same way, though I haven't bothered with a ticket yet because I feel lucky to even have one given the extremely short supply. They haven't made a specific statement on dead pixels in the FAQs, but here are a couple close ones:
What is your warranty & return policy?http://oneplus.net/support/answer/what-is-your-warranty-return-policy
What should I do if I receive a defective product?http://oneplus.net/support/answer/what-should-i-do-if-i-received-a-defective-product
Other than that, thishttps://forums.oneplus.net/threads/dead-pixel.68381/#post-3362283 is about the most useful statement I could find from any admin on the topic. >.<
You can also do like I might and wait for your shared invites to come in, use one to buy a new phone, then sell your current one on eBay or something. Just be sure to be honest about any issues with it. Given the low supply you'd probably still get darn close to retail for it.

Stuck pixel here
Though I bought the phone nearly two months back, got it only today from a friend travelling from the US as my country is unsupported yet for shipping.
I discovered a white stuck pixel that stays on in any damn screen when the phone is on.
Pete Lau was drumbeating so much about being very strict with quality, but if so many people are complaining about the screen, this is not good.
Depending on whether the pixel is actually dead (meaning it either gets no power or shortened) or stuck (crystal can't rotate) you may be able to revive it. There are applications for that purpose in the Play store that very quickly toggle through several colors in the hope of jiggling the pixel free - leave it running for a few hours and check if the screen is fixed.

Hello! Yes!
I have a stuck pixel at my opo. I can just give you one advise. Don't change it. Just don't care about those pixels and more important: Don't search dead pixels. I wad also like you, and so i ordered 3x htc one x, 3x galaxy s3 and all of them had dead pixels or stuck pixels. Also my galaxy s4 had one, and my lg g2! So every ****in phone has them. It's like a big joke and you need very good luck to get one without.
So now i have my opo, and also have 1 stuck pixel. But you know what, i don't care. You have to learn this.
Otherwise you'll be going crazy. Just be happy with your phone. In some time you will get another phone anyway.
So pfff.

Yup! Stuck pixel here, it appeared after having the device for less than a day, it's 1 red pixel, so it's not visible on white background. But dark background its right in my face.
I had a little cluster of white pixels on my m7, never really bothered by it.
The way oneplus handle this, I don't think I'll even bother to try to get a replacement device. Well, that's the price we pay for buying from cheap Chinese manufacturer.

You do know that "3+ dead/stuck pixels" is what major brands also require for replacement?

That light bleed along the lower edge...

After trying and failing with the S8/S8+ I decided to go for the U11.
I ordered two phones from Amazon, one for myself and one for family. They were the amazing silver. We powered them on, and then noticed backlight bleed along the lower edge. The guy on this review is the only reviewer who mentions it and shows the problem:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2017/0...pretty-good-phone-if-anyones-still-listening/
Not only that, but both phones had a dead pixel on the screen (But I think that's just my bad luck . I took it on myself to watch reviews on youtube, and I think the lower edge problem has been there on every review unit, but no reviewer mentioned it.
I really am considering a switch to the U11, but I have a serious screen OCD so I wanted to put it to you guys... Do you all experience this? And is it terribly bad on every day performance?
Thanks

No shadow, no dead pixels (just went through a full pixel test - jeez this backlight will blind you on full!), no scuffed glass, nothing. It's the first device I've ever gotten from HTC with no complaints about the screen (my M7 had a yellow tint as did the M8 and the first few weeks of owning my 10, the glue hadn't settled so it was pink tinted and I had to have the Sprint store open up 8 EVOs before I found an acceptable screen to give you an idea - never had a dead pixel except on AMOLED ironically enough).
It's the Sapphire Blue.

Yeah out of all phones I've ever ordered, this one is by far my favorite. Ridiculous battery life, no lag, great screen, no gimmicks (edge sense is actually quite useful - I use it to launch my camera immediately when I'm out and about), excellent camera, doesn't overheat, crystal clear call quality, loud speaker set up... Only thing I don't like is News Republic chewing up my battery and not being able to disable it.
I haven't even rooted it yet. Every other phone I've rooted within a week, oftentimes the day I've received it. I ordered it May 16th from HTC on pre-order and got it on June 9th. No phone has ever been in my possession that long without being modded somehow, even if it was just changing the launcher.
The light bleed problem affected every review unit as you said, and there have been several threads here mentioning it. My conclusion is that nearly every U11 has the problem although it's rather subtle so not easy not to notice if you don't know about it.
Personally I'm rather OCD about screens and I'm not happy about this defect but I'm now used to it. The location is just one that you don't look at normally. In fact I think we've grown used to ignore the lowest part of the screen as it's where ads normally sit. Also it kinda helps that the bleed gets reduced a lot depending on the angle you look at the screen from.

Thanks. I am considering getting a device regardless. I will ponder it over the weekend - and if you are OCD and can live with it, so must I. If you can help with advice on how to deal with such impulses (over screens), do drop me a message. I am desperately trying to drop that habit off.

I'm very OCD regarding LCD screen and the phone itself. The phone is perfect except for the light bleeding, a stuck pixel and some sound static in earphone. Otherwise the phone is perfect like the camera, sound, battery life and performance.
As I bought the phone from Hong Kong its a pain in the... To return it. So with a 10% discount off that seller gave me I learned to enjoy and love the phone.
My HTC One X, M8x, 10 U11 and the S8+ all suffered from flaws being the S8+ the worst (random restarting and pinkish screen tone) so I'm not a lucky person about phones.
@evak2979 i sent you a message but basically it's about accepting defeat when it comes to small flaws, unfortunately there's not more to it. Although of course, if your phone has serious build issues that no one else has it should go back to HTC.
I have is as well. Actually this is my second unit (Black), the previous (Silver) had it as well. I can see it in display test application but I would say it is not affecting normal usage. Overall I am happy with display quality.

Like I told my new pal on PM, I got the S8+ new for a very good price (539, UK).
If that sinks, I'll bite the bullet and return to HTC. It's funny because I don't mind scuffs, or scratches, or what. I just want a normal okay screen. I remember being happy with Note 4, with S5, With M8, With M9.
Then this new fashion started with every display being the dumbs
And the S8+ arrived with dust under the glass.
I've fought for a long time with my OCD to accept that AMOLEDs will never have consistent whites (though my one plus 3t is perfect, the one phone I've kept over the months). As of late with the S8 it's also been, full red edges, dead pixels, dust specs.
Let's try the U11 again. If it just has light bleed and no dead pixels I'll keep it...
I don't have light bleed.
I use edge to launch my calendar.
Sound through the earphones is shockingly good!
It looks dated in any other color but blue or red.
Those bezels? Ug.
The screen is beautiful and they've coated with oleophilics that feel INCREDIBLE.
The camera is excellent.
It's a very VERY good phone.
I have it on mine, but It's hardly even noticeable... Definitely not a game-changer for me. It's not enough for me to return it for a new one.
Just updating that I received my HTC U11 black, and I sent it back with a dead pixel. That's the third U11 with dead pixels, the first two having been silvers from Amazon.
I have also encountered issues with S8s (dust under glass), but not so much or frequent.
I want to get a U11 more than I do an S8, but I am really really skeptical about a few things - the build quality of the panel. The reports that some of the units are not so water proof (The solar reds apparently, a youtube search I did testified to that.
Sorry for diverting this thread from its original post, but I am really curious about you guys' opinion. I agree to having screen OCD, and that I should lower my standards when it comes to white consistency on AMOLED, for example. Or even some light bleed on LCD panels.
But dead pixels? Dead pixels on 649 pound devices, top end flagship? What is going on with QC and how lost must we drop our standards.
And if anyone thinks I am lying I am happy to provide with pictures...
If anyone from the UK has a relatively faultless HTC, please tell me where you bought it from so I can buy from there myself. And which color variant.
Thank you.
Hi, I believe you as I have the same problem with my Asian version. But can you share a picture? I want to compare mine with yours.

Of course...Here. Same on all three, just in different positions.
Mine is in a similar position but it's not black. Indeed it changes according to the color but of course it's different from the rest. Mine is more a defective pixel than a dead or stuck one. I thought it was the same pixel issue but it's not.

Nah mine is dead dead.
I am considering a 4th U11. At this point, I don't even care about the light bleed. But 3/3 with dead pixels, it can't just be bad luck. That's the thing. I mean this is very bad QC. None of the reviewers are mentioning things like this. Or the issues with the S8 screen.
I think at this point someone needs to step up and say : ok guys, these are the GOOD things about the phone. But there is also
S8 (red tints, even after patch. Bad smudges on grey. Dust particles under panel)
U11 (Dead pixels. Light bleed at bottom of the screen).
In the end, the only trustworthy review is XDA forums and its users.
