I bought a verizon galaxy s4 a few weeks ago and foolishly updated it. I now want to root it and i havent rooted anything in months but i wasnt to worried until i cant seem to find if you can root with version VRUFNK1. I found 1 thread where someone said they bricked there phone trying on this version. If it possible please let me know and what method to use.
you can actually root it safely only if you downgrade back to the VRUFNC5 bootloader , the use the vroot method.

I done some research and am very lost as to what to do. there are no clear instuructions on how to downgrade from vrufnk1 to vrufnc5 at all that I can find. can someone elaborate on this and give me a little more detailed instuctions and possibly links to the files ill need or websites where to find them. And is it possible to even downgrade without first being rooted? Sorry its been years since i have done this and it was way simpler on the kindle fire.
I have a buddy thats in the same boat, he's got a newer s4 and wants to rom it for his first time.
I am also in this predicament. I had a galaxy nexus that I would flash different roms to every week but I upgraded via Verizon to the S4 a few months ago -- bloatware is awful and is taking up over 7GB of my 16... Would love to get a jump on rooting, but I can't find anything on this build aside from this thread and another few posts that were also unanswered. Any help or direction would be great -- do y'all think there will have to be another way to root this build, or can downgrading be okay?
Same boat
I too am in the same boat, for some reason with i545vrufnk1, I can't root so want to downgrade the firmware to a firmware that allows me to root, tried all the various methods to root but for some reason I can't, think it might be the firmware or the knox software package.
I believe you could root with Towelroot.

towel root won't work
I tried it with the latest official update and it won't work. I'm looking to root as well.
[How-To] Root I545VRUFNK1 4.4.2 (12-1-2014)
Look for this thread on xda search tab. It worked for me. Just follow closely.
I followed the downgrade instructions and got root back. Is it Verizon that makes it a pain in the ass? I don't know what I would do without this place and helpful people

Hey guys I'm coming from a nexus so I have a simple question I've done a lot of looking around I'm running the latest unrooted 4.1.2 stock jellybean unrooted. Is there a simple one click wham bam root method? I'm using a verizon network. I kmow everyone knows how to do it I'm a noob with this phone so please be nice thanks a lot in advance-

This is the only way to root 4.1.2 as of now
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439
No easy method so far seeing as no one has yet dumped a stock 4.1.2 image for the devs to work with (prob since devs aren't buying a new s3 this late in the game anymore)
Thanks guys

Well it depends, compared to getting root on the droid x, HTC incredible, and the bionic, root on the gs3 is cake walk regardless of the method you use. Just be glad you don't have to make a Linux live CD.
Brand New S3
I'm in the same boat and and just got a new S3. I tried using the guide someone else posted and bricked my phone, luckily I was able to get it replaced. I was very meticulous and read the guide over and watched some videos before trying it myself. Maybe I screwed up somewhere but I'm afraid to try it again. I did find this thread with a method that seems pretty simple [HOWTO] [ROOT] [ODIN] No Tripping Flash Counter - Root + [TWRP] - Updated 03.14.2013 but I haven't posted on XDA enough to be able to clarify some of my questions on the forum. To me it sounds like I should just be able to use any of the images on that page, then use EZ-Unlocker and EZ-Recovery to unlock the bootloader then install CWM.
I don't want to hijack your thread but I thought you might be interested in this method. Assuming it is as simple as it sounds. Maybe someone can give us some insight?

hello, im very sorry if this is covered a million times over by now. ive been using google as well as looking into all the fourms in xda. very confusing and kinda frustrated. i have searched for about 3 days. i am very much a noob and dont get the lingo. also post seems to spin off into installing custom roms. im just looking for pure root. bootloader and things of that nature i dont care much about. my problem is i have app data in my Motorola xt912 droid that i just rooted the other day. i cant use helium to get it out. so rooted with a program i found on here. bought titanium back up pro. i also bought helium pro since i was able to move data from this s3 to my girl friends s4. i do want to help support the devs that make these things possible for the average user that likes to keep things simple.
so i have this 4.3 update. so i see forums saying i can root while others say it will brick my phone. just looking for a straight answer. thank you for taking your time to read this and have a happy new years

Sorry to hear about your searching troubles. I think everyone here will admit that specific info about Tw 4.3 is hard to find in one place but we've got folks helping out in the 4.3 discussion thread. Ask anything and someone may have an informed answer.
You can use Saferoot to root TW VRUCML1 ota. Yes, my link is to a Galaxy S4 tool however we have multiple users in the discussion thread that have confirmed Saferoot works for our latest 4.3 OTA. Feel free to search in that thread and you will find confirmation. Root has been possible much of the last week, maybe two.
I know you said this but I'll just reiterate, we have root only nothing else for TW 4.3. Do not flash anything in Odin unless it's the 4.3 VRUCML1 tar to restore back to stock.
thank you!!!!!
ok this seemed to have worked. my phone wants to reboot but titanium back up pro says i have root. maybe in your nice guide which i havent found anyone who said this yet, that the program ask to disable knox. i clicked no. (another reason im scared to reboot my phone) i cliaked no because of all the post saying to disable knox will brick your phone

You should probably run that tool again and choose yes. Haven't heard of anyone choosing no, the people I've seen who had root chose yes. It's not explicitly stated but it does not hurt the phone in any capacity by selecting yes. To be honest though, idk what the difference is between selecting yes and no.
I'm not on the TW 4.3 OTA so maybe someone can provide input on the disabling Knox.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 4
I just used saferoot on mine today. I honestly didn't see anything about disabling Knox when I did it, but when I installed titanium backup Knox Notification Manager was already disabled so I'm assuming it happened somewhere in the process. Phone is working great so far. I haven't tried defrosting it because, well.... Why, it's working fine the way it is.

hello. I need the exact instructions that actually work to root my galaxy s5 5.0. the root methods on forums never work and I know exactly how to root the phone. but no one gives all the information on exactly how to do it. this is a replacement phone. I had the last version of Android rooted but the instructions on rooting that didn't work also and I had to use an app. I see where people have said you need Android bootloader but bootloader doesn't work through Odin. So can't actually put a custom recovery like TWRP on the phone using Odin. Is there another method that people aren't telling us that actually work or is there an app that can root. Had to use towelroot on my last phone because the rooting method never works. And I have been flashing ROMs for years on multiple phones so i know what needs to be downloaded. Just method can't work for everyone ununfortunately. If anyone has any information on how I can root my phone now that I'm on Android 5.0 would be much appreciated. Or if it's impossible to root the phone now that I'm on Android 5.0. If anyone can tell me that I would appreciate that too. Thnx

My at&t phone was unlocked and rooted when I got it, but it was lacking the last 6 updates, including lollipop, so I unrooted it to bring it up to date (5.0.1). Now I want to root it again, but haven't found any viable way to do it so far.
I tried Framaroot Plus, but that was a bust, and I had to uninstall it or my phone would personally take me out!!
I have read about people going back to KitKat, and I'm beginning to think I may do that, providing I can find out how, or perhaps someone out there knows how to root this phone and can show me?? ~Thanks

Go to GalaxyS4Root.com, Zedomax has the rooting methods for all the S4 models and all the builds they come with, if you don't see a method for yours then there probably isn't one.

Thanks for the reference. Zedomax shows many ways to root the S4 back from 2013 and 2014, but I couldn't find one that would root the SGH-i337 5.0.1. BTW, I suppose I should have mentioned that I have a MAC. I've posted my question on his website. Meanwhile, is there anyone else out there who might be able to help?

I've looked this up before for other members but I don't recall finding anything that will root the 5.0.1 build for your model. You can look into whether or not your device is safe to downgrade to older stock firmware(one that is root able) and then root.

Finding my way around on this website is usually laborious and confusing. I did find out about "J0din3" for mac, but that was a bust and a great waste of time, because it's too old and now it's undownloadable. So I tried the latest Wine Bottler; it works with el Capitan OSX (what I'm using on the mac) and was able to get Odin to work. However, it's not recognizing my phone, otherwise, I'd be done by now. Have you ever worked with Wine? Can you tell me how I can get the Odin to recognize my phone? Did I do something out of sequence?
And a separate question for xda-dev at large: Why doesn't xda-dev eliminate all the outdated, old, and useless information that rattles around here like satellite debris and gets a lot of people off on the wrong foot?!

Sorry, I won't be of any help with Mac and my knowledge of linux is less than rudimentary, never used Wine, I use windows when windows apps are needed.
The old stuff still has useful info that still applies I guess, I've never checked XDA-Dev out, I'm not that deep in it yet. I'm working in other areas. Try posting your issues with getting recognized in this link:

Ok the past week iv pulled all nighters trying to root this s727vl. I have also did ton of of research and have found out the root method for 6.0 marshmellow and how root is obtain has drastically changed. I have easily rooted every device iv owned from 2.0 to 4.4. What if found out is the device is easier to root than 4.4 and 5.0. The problem is that the 2 root methods are not currently possible at this time because custom recovery is needed to flash supersu.zip. twrp and cwm have not made a compatible apk for our device. And the second root method which requires eng.boot don't have one for our device's either. The good news is that twrp is completely open source and there is a guide here on the forum on how to recompile it for your device. I will be giving it a shot. Dont wast your time with iroot, kingroot, srsoot, towel root, unlock root, tunesgo, and about 5 more that i cant remember the name.. i will keep everybody posted on my recompiling twrp. It's going to be a awhile though.

Wondering if you had any success rooting this one. Honestly, I'd just like to use the mobile hotspot.

I've been studying this phone for a while and waiting for a root method. TWRP would be ideal, but it doesn't seem to be a priority for those with the talent to do so. In my research today, I may have stumbled upon what appears to be a means to root this phone (or any phone). Instead of looking around for "root", try instead to study and learn about Magisk. It seems to be the new preferred way to root newer devices. TWRP would make it easier, but there are instructions to use the stock firmware download and the Magisk app to achieve root for practically any device. Even if there is no TWRP available.
From what I can gather, Magisk modifies the stock Boot.img file. Once modified, it will allow you to switch root on and off much like we have in the past. It also has the added benefit of "hiding" from the OS, so the OS is not as likely to become aware of being rooted. It remains rooted even after Updates.
Have a look at this link for a better explanation and a basic how-to:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/how-to-install-magisc-twrp-locked-t3599926/page2
I post this so that the rest of you can try it as well, hopefully soon so we can compare notes and hopefully leverage each other's success. I'm downloading the Stock firmware now. This is NOT a "run a magic program and it roots my phone idiot-proof method", but it doesn't seem to be overly-complex either. Good luck and please report back.
