I don't know if this is typical. My Intercept's battery does great when I'm not using data, but with heavy browsing or tethering, it loses hit points like it's soaking up ghosts in Gauntlet. I'm looking for extended or high-capacity batteries, but there don't seem to be any on the market yet. I found some 1800mAh ones (bump of 20%) for Omnia i8910 (supposedly same form-factor) over here on Ebay UK but anyone know of any others? Thanks.
The stock 2.1 battery meter seems to be somewhat flawed on the VM Intercept. Using a 3rd party battery monitoring app will show the battery at only around 75% when the Android system is reporting it as 'full' or 'charged'.
In other words, if you're charging your device based on what the stock 2.1 system tells you, your battery is apparently only being charged to around 75% or so.

Hmm, yeah, I'd noticed the battery meter didn't always seem accurate, but that's pretty lame if it's not charging fully. If it helps I'm leaving it on charge all night, every night. For now, I just got an extra charger to leave at my desk at work, it just sits on there all day.

Intercepts batter should last at least 16-18 hours on decent amount of usage. The battery meter is flawed, severely. It has the images inside of the framework for 10% increments but doesnt use them. The stat_sys_batt_vinsq.xml shows the readout changing ever 25-30% or so. Not sure why samsung did this but its pretty wonky
My stock VM Intercept 2.1 begins reporting the battery as 'charged' at around 65%, meaning that it will begin bleeping for you to remove it with popup messages. If you leave it on longer and either ignore the bleeping or put it in silent mode, the battery will continue to charge up to around 97% or so according to 3rd party battery monitoring apps. Sometimes this causes android to wig-out though, requiring a reboot to restore functionality. It seems best to remove it from the charger around 90% - 95%.
Also interesting is that it seems to take a long time for it to reach that last 20% ...don't know what's up with that. Compared to my G1 the Intercept takes forever to charge.
Maybe 2.2 for VM will fix it. lol!
Yeah, I'm hoping 2.2 will tighten it up a bit and help some 3rd-party stuff lose a bit of lag (games mostly.) Looks like the 3/25 date got pushed back, I'm hearing 4/4 now. Network issues or something, I dunno.
Interesting to note that the 'wigging out' of Android that I spoke about above when charging past the stock 'battery full' bleeping noise (70%) seems to be sound-related. It is interesting in that the issues with replacement roms also appear to be largely sound-related (sound lag, etc.). Don't know whats up with that....hardware issues?
You can mitigate the sound issues during charging by putting it in 'silent' mode though when you go above 90% or so.
Now if someone can figure out why picture-messaging is so buggy when you send from the camera app.....
Im trying to convince myself to get the Inspire and sell my atrix.
The last thing that is making me reluctant is the battery. I consitantly get between 30 and 40 hours between charges on my atrix with 3 to 4 hours of screen time. I know i wont get that with an Inspire, but im wondering what kind of stats people are seeing who are running custom ROMs. With my capitvate i saw a nearly DOUBLE battery life effect between stock and a custom rom. im hoping there are similar results on the inspire.
for those on custom roms, im looking to see how many hours you get between charges. ideally, how many hours between charges, with how many hours of screen time, wifi, blue tooth, etc. and im also interested in seeing the battery life of those who are OC/UV.
Someones gotta have info for me!

If your main concern is BATTERY USAGE, then DO NOT get an Inspire.
No matter what ROM or other MODS made to an Ispire, it is accepted by all that have one, that the Inspire has very low battery uptime, especially when compared to other platforms.
Stay with your ATRIX for long battery usage and uptime. - Glenn
I just swapped my Atrix for the Inspire this past Sunday, and i can tell you first hand you're not gonna get the same battery results you did with the Atrix. Personally, I don't need to get 20-40 hours of battery life from a phone. Don't get me wrong, it is nice, but I don't need it. I just want to get at least 8 hours (while I'm at work) from a battery and I'm fine. However, I do have my charger with me just in case and i also have a car charger.
I rooted my Inspire Sunday night and flashed the stock rooted rom and couldn't be happier. I got about 13 hours out of the battery yesterday while I was at work and I used it under normal circumstances..calling, texts and lots of fb checking etc. Oh, and I didn't have any overclocking, underclocking, themes or nothing...just the rooted the stock rom.
The inspire is a lot more smooth also when compared to the Atrix. I was all for the Atrix last week. But after actually having the Inspire....its the Inspire FTW!
Its not my main concern. Just the Las thing I'm considering. A lot if other things about the inspire are appealing. Just looking for round about numbers.
Can I get 12 hours out of itwith 2 to 3 hours of screen time? That might be enough for me........If can get more than that, then I would def be sold.
Of course all this would be expected only when all aetttings on phone for Max bat life applied

Speak for yourself. My Inspire lasts me the day with a ton of juice left over. I'm not a super heavy user, but I will have sometimes 60-70% battery life when I go to bed on light use days. On heavier use days I'm still at 30-40% when I go to bed. Unless you are watching youtube videos or something for hours on end, battery life is fine I think.
To extend battery life I adjusted my screen brightness back to 30% with no auto adjust, seemed to help battery life quite a bit and did not make much difference in how the screen looked. Today I am trying auto brightness, but using power saver to switch to lower screen brightness when the battery hits 40%--I'm at 7 hours and the battery is still at 70%. Honestly, I don't think a person could even watch a movie on a flight, for example, the screen draw on the battery is that bad. If I keep the phone, I will have to get another battery.
I get 22-24 hours with light average use, about 14 hours of moderate use. CM7, nothing special done or flashed.

I was replying to the OP's original statment regarding his Atrix battery time in reference to the Insire's battery time:

My results are based on percentage of time versus overall time, based on an average 8h work day.
Stock rom:
at the end of 8h I had an average of 55% left
Revolution HD 4 Beta 2:
at the end of 8h I had an average of 35% left
Stock rom rooted and bloat removed, HSPDA enabled:
only have one data point and it looks good so far. I had 75% left with the same average use as the other roms above. Why this one is so much better I don't know.
Also the stock rom came with the stock Radio 06.04.06_M but with the root downgrade and then custom rom to Rev HD4 B2 I had to upgrade the Radio to one that was suggested, which is 06.03.24_M2.
Also, one thing that I noted which was also seen on my Nexus One is that when I use the GPS my car charger is not able to keep up and I will loose battery % as I drive.
All in all I am very happy with this move from the Captivate. Many see it as a lateral move, but if you ever where in the need for the GPS this is definatey an upgrade since the GPS on the Inspire is spot on.

my first run with the inspire resulted in 14 hours since last charge (down to 15%) with nearly 3 hours of screen on time.
granted i adjusted every possible thing to be less battery consuming, and one hour of that screen time was laying in bed in the dark with the screen on the lowest brightness setting.
i think i may be able to work with this.

yeah i am close to an impulse buy on the inspire too, just because its such a great price. even full price at 399 is insanely cheap when most phones are 550 full price.

the battery does suck. but everything else on the phone is so great, that i still am happy i got it
I am a pretty hardcore user and I never have any issues with battery at all. I believe a lot of these battery issues that people have are due to flashing with a low battery, which causes the battery's "memory" to get messed up. If people flashed with a full battery, or did the battery reset procedure after flashing and charging, we would stop hearing about all the horrible battery issues. User error, not an issue with the phone. If it was a phone issue, I would absolutely be experiencing the problem as well.
There are also bigger, better, higher capacity batteries up to 3500 ma/h if you REALLY need more battery time.

alright so i had a lot of issues with getting great battery life out of the phone. i'm only writing this to help people that are having similar issues. obvious, relative to teh atrix (with a ridiculously larger battery), the life is NOT that great. BUT i've gotten 24+ hours on teh phone with certain tweaks.
first off, rooting is a pain in the ass, but a necessity for any power user. My HSUPA speeds are often higher then the HSDPA speeds...and I can tether too! Anyways most important part of tihs is underclocking. I have my screen set to underclock to 3xx Mhz with screen off. I can't even tell the difference between when it is underclocked or not. I don't OC since for whatever reason I don't see the option to and don't care to force it.
I also set my brightness to 20% or less when i'm indoors, which is usually where i am. I also turn off the radios when i'm not using them, or wifi when i'm in range (i think its better than hspa), and sometimes autosync too (there are widgets for this). i also disabled facebook live feed syncing and set it to update when i open the app, and to sync contacts and htc sync and other useless stuff to once a day.
if you want something to turn off your radios when your screen is off, check otu juice defender. if you want to track your battery over time, try juice plotter. with the way i ahve it setup now, if i leave the screen off for 10 minutes. the battery drops 1% or less PER HOUR. One night, it finished charging at midnight so i took it off, and didn't put it back on a charger 1 am the next night with 10-15% left.
anyways, i hope this helps at least some new inspire owners. good luck with rooting if you haven't yet, it took me 4 hours, but itw as COMPLETELY worth it

Got another data point for the stock rom.
This time after the 8h my battery was at 55%, however I spend considerable time in a clean room were I have no signal at all. My other phones would usually drain much quicker in there and I believe it's because it's seeking a cell signal all the time.
So far I am very happy with the rooted stock rom, only wished it had some of the Gingerbread features.
I have consistently gotten about 9 hours usage, with 1.5 - 2 hours screen time, and left work with 40 - 60% battery. I make no effort to reduce usage, as nothing even comes close to the screens usage, except I do leave off gps when not in use. This is a general average, and I have noticed little difference between stock and 2 different versions of Android revolution, with different flashed radios. (roms always flashed at full battery) and overclocked to 1.2 with ondemand set. Overall I can say this battery is not great, but the rest of the phone is well worth it. I had the atrix for 2 weeks, and although the atrix got better benchmark scores, it was way less smooth, and a lot of market apps don't work on it, like flashlights, live wallpapers that don't support the screen, etc.
I am very glad my atrix's touchscreen failed, because if it didn't, I probably would have never tried the inspire, and I am much happier with the inspire.

I switched from a highly modified DroidX (which I still own) to a new Charge recently (which I absolutely love).
The X had GB flashed with Liberty ROM and the battery life was really exceptional. It did increase when I swapped from froyo to GB, but I don't really remember how much. Using the VZ extended battery (the small one that fits into a stock case) I easily got a full days use out of it with GPS always running, weather updating every 30 minutes, gmail running push and Bluetooth on quite a bit. I can't remember ever once having to swap out the battery before I got home from a day at work.
With the Charge, on the very first boot (before it was even activated), I opened it in odin and flashed to gummycharged 191. The thing runs totally awesome, fast and fluid as hell-completely lag free and has never frozen up once. It blows away the X in every way except battery life.
Today, I started on a mugen 1800 battery and ran that until it had 2% charge left. That took about 4 hours running EXACTLY THE SAME apps that I always ran in the X. I then stuck in an aftermarket 1800 battery and ran that one until it was totally dead also before I left work.
Other than the battery life, I am 100% totally happy with the swap from the X to the Charge. I have three extra batteries and an external charger for the Charge, so having to swap batteries etc is not the end of the world, but I am wondering how much better the battery life would be if I swapped to a GB ROM at this point??
I am open to any/all suggestions at this point......

There's three things you need to be aware of for battery life for this phone:
1. Your kernel - This affects your battery, not the ROM.
2. The screen - The screen is awesome on this phone, but unfortunately it is a battery killer, this can be solved by turning off auto brightness or downloading the Screen Filter app. The screen is also the main draw for the battery in terms of drain.
3. The 4G LTE Radio - this is the largest difference between your last phone and this. If you live in an area where your LTE is spotty, I suggest turning off your LTE and leave it at 3G CDMA. An easy way to get to the toggle is to download the LTE Switch from the Android market. The reason the LTE destroys the battery is due to the fact that your phone is constantly searching for an LTE signal, thus draining the battery faster than a non-4G phone would. If you're in a strong LTE area, it shouldn't affect it much, but turning off LTE does help the battery in most cases. The LTE radio is the second main draw of battery power.
Finally, be sure to remember to wipe your battery stats after flashing the new ROM and fully charging your phone to 100%. Hope all this helped!
EDIT: Also be wary when flashing to one of the Gingerbread leaks. People have been getting mixed signals in terms of battery life, since the leaks aren't exactly stable. I tried out GB for awhile, but wasn't too fond of the instability that Froyo still offered, so I flashed back after a week.
I turned off the auto brightness setting immediately. I run it on 25% most of the time, i only turn it up when I'm outside.
I have been thinking about trying a few different kernels to see what difference that makes, any recommendations as to which one might be best?
I did calibrate the battery after flashing the ROM.
I do have the 4g switch (and I'm in a 4g area) but I haven't tried running for a day in 3G. I think I will try that tomorrow and see what difference it makes.

Kernels–if you don't care about overclocking I recommend imnuts non–OTB kernel.

For some reason my battery meter both stock and the widget I installed get stuck at the same level for hours. Only way to get an accurate read on my battery level is to reboot the phone.
Anyone else having this issue?
Not sure if it's the widget causing this or not since it also shows stuck on the stock battery meter in the task bar.
This has been discussed in other forums (androidforums.com) as well, though I can't recall if I've seen it here as well. There is a bit of debate over the cause.
I personally have had it happen only 1 time in the past 2 weeks of owning the device.
Others commented on that they thought it might be if they used a different cable than the one that came with the device, or an Apple branded wall-charger.
I personally have used an HP Touchpad charger that can put out more amperage (2.1A) and have not had trouble with the battery meter getting stuck since that one time.
I'm sure others will have their opinions on the cause as well.
Also, FYI-some people who have had this happen often enough have brought the battery back and gotten a new one as it might also be a firmware or even hardware problem on the battery itself.
Ive had my htc one x for maybe 5-6 months which is almost the longest ive ever been on one phone and i love(d) it, but its always been doing something very strange and aggravating that seems to be getting worse. Battery drain has always been a problem for me with this phone but ehh i can deal with it, but once my phone gets down to about 14% which is does often because of the draining it starts acting real funny with its power and sometimes goes from 14 down to 5 in an instant literally out of no where and as soon as i plug up itll go right back to 13, or itll shut down entirely at 14% but i can just cut it back on, or itll shut down in the middle of me doing something and i have to charge it for about 5-10 minutes before itll even come back on. The latter happened last night btw. No matter what combination of roms/kernels i try this always seems to be a problem. I really cant deal with this anymore and its to the point where i wanna throw my phone into a wall and just buy another one, which im seriously thinking about doing at this point. If such thing has happened to anyone before or you have insight on this can you please help before i just give up hope completely.
What you have described is normal for our device. Remember that the battery percentage is just an estimate of your actual charge. In addition, you find your phone shutting off around the lower percentages as a result of the device attempting to prevent damage to the battery. That is what the HOXl was designed to do.

Last night when it did it, as it has before, i was still on 21%.... thats not normal. And this isnt my first android nor first htc, never happened before. Even on my aunts old one s it didnt happen
Do you allow full charges after these "forced shutdowns" occur? This should cause your battery to recalibrate.

The battery behavior on this phone has been interesting. I have the battery last over two weeks on airplane mode and I've had the battery last just a couple of hours with just a stock setup. There are so many factors that play into this. I work in an area with very little to no signal reception and my battery life goes crazy and the phone can get really hot while I'm there so I've seen the best and worst.
What I do to counteract this bad behavior:
1. Charge prior to 40% (I've had the phone go from 40% to zero instantly before)
2. Consider your signal reception and either try out different radios or use airplane mode to reduce erratic battery drain
3. Install a 3rd party app like batterycalibration (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nema.batterycalibration&hl=en) and use that when things get hairy (I calibrate every two weeks or so and that does the trick for me.
My phone has been like this since I pulled it out of the box. With a little management, it is just fine. You have seen it before but I'll say it again, you have to get through a few charge cycles when flashing a new Rom to get back to normal.
Hope this helps. It works for me and I work in a cell phone reception hell.

When a new ROM or kernel is flashed you need to let battery settle for at least 48hrs before you get super worried about battery. If possible during that time let device fully discharge then charge up to 100. Please use a battery monitoring app and then see what's causing the issues. With proper config hoxl will get good battery life. There is always the chance its hardware issue but doubtful as battery prolly would of completely failed by now. Also check your screen brightness settings. Hope this helps

Ive done all three methods youve mentioned before and still same thing. Also im on 3/4 bars with lte 90% of the time so no reception issues here. And with my current setup ive been running it for about 2 weeks.

Ive always let the rom settle in and i constantly maintain the brightness on around mid level (mirror screen protector so i cant go too low) but its not just one rom or a few, its with every rom i flash ad that consists of most roms available for this device
The battery behaviour you described is completely normal if you understand how a battery of this type works, and if you understand how the software (especially the display of battery percentage) works in conjunction with it.

So youre telling me having the phone get to 22% and instantly drop to zero and power down is normal? Makes no sense at all. Also i cant get it to charge too 100% for anything. So if theres no fix to this, anybody want a one x with a troublesome battery?
What I'm saying is the battery percentage displayed by the software is never exact, it's only an estimate based on the voltage level of your battery. Your battery sounds like its long term life (capacity) has been decreased over time and possibly bad treatment (allowing the device to discharge too much too many times).

Depends on what you define as "normal". Such behavior is certainly not unheard of (although you particular collection of symptoms may point to a more serious issue, which I'll get to later). Couple things you have to remember: the battery meter is far from accurate. Being off by 10% or more is not unusual (completely normal). So jumping from 5 to 13% as you mentioned is not out of the question. The battery voltage is not actually jumping around, just the % battery number that the phone is assigning to various voltage readings. Reading errors happen, and if a jump is noticed, its just the meter correcting itself.
Which brings us to the other point that should be kept in mind: the battery % is not a "real" measurement. Its just a number assigned to various voltages to give the average person a sense of how much battery is left. Its a completely fabricated and artificial measure that just gives some relative sense of when a user should charge their battery. Phone makers just decided to use a system that average people would understand, like the fuel gauge on a car. Zero doesn't really mean zero (or anywhere close), but reporting in voltages would make no sense for most folks. Also, as we all well know, just because (for example) it took you 12 hours to drain the phone to 50%, does not necessarily mean the phone will last another 12 hours to drain the remaining 50%. It all depends on what you are doing with the phone during that time. Which leaves the question: What does the % battery really mean? Really, not a heck of a lot.
On the other hand, the battery failing to charge to 100% is troublesome, as is the apparent frequency of the meter drops and the fact that the issue remains after various ROM flashes. Leads me to believe there may be some hardware issue going on.
The short answer: IMO while some of the individual symptoms are not unusual, the seeming frequency (you haven't exactly quantified this, but it seems relative frequent just based on your descriptions) may suggest a larger issue, but its not certain.
Thanks it explained a lot but it happened again today, went to the store with ~36% on the meter and walked out, haven't touched it at all, phone was completely dead. Tried to charge and it went to 6% and stopped charging, all signs showed it was charging but it was stuck on 6. Then it started climbing again and reached about 16% and actually started losing charge while on the charger. Switched over to my portable battery charger i just got and it held the charge at about 5% for ~30 minutes, which is what it was when i plugged it in and started to charge, then it stopped againand during the whole process the phone was getting very hot. Yea im getting a new phone :/
