Hi!
I am a current Galaxy S3 (GT-I9300) owner who is considering getting an OPO. On my current device using anything other than Samsung based rom gives a horrible camera quality. I am hoping that it might be somewhat better on OPO since it is based on CM11. Or am i perhaps wrong?
Camera quality is the same no matter what OS you're running on this phone.

Is that i good thing or a bad thing?

It's a good thing, I've taken some fantastic shots with this camera. But, if you're used to the stupidly over-saturated Samsung camera this one will take some getting used to because it gives a much more natural colour tone in the images.

That nice.
Sammys camera gets quite dark when used with AOSP.

There are some beautiful examples of what this camera is capable of.

Hey guys,
I recently noticed that the One XL camera is doing some post-processing after the image is taken. It sharpens and brightens the photos, but also leaves them looking washed out. I've always thought that darker One XL photos looked a little washed out when posted on Facebook or Instagram.
This is especially evident when using the review feature in the Sense camera. When you take a photo, the one shot being reviewed looks sharp with a good contrast. But if you immediately open the photo that's in the gallery, you'll see the difference immediately.
Now, I'm wondering if there is any way to disable this? It seems to also happen in CM10, so it might be a hardware feature.
What ROM are you running currently?
I've never experienced this to be honest

I was running Newts JB and now I'm on CM10 with the same issue. Did you by any chance try the sequence I explained and notice any difference?
I really like the camera functions and modes on the stock TW. However I have been trying out various AOSP roms and I feel that the camera quality is not the same and the modes for the AOSP camera dont seem to work very well like the TW do. Has anybody compared them? Or is it just my imagination?
Aosp camera is not as good as tw one

This has always been the case for me. It sucks since I do enjoy aosp. But the Samsung camera on the s4 is really nice.

I was in the same situation with my old htc inspire. The sense roms had the best camera but the aosp, aokp, even miui couldn't compare.

I wish there was a way to get the best of both!
AT&T S4
When I had an AOSP rom running, I clearly noticed the downgrade in camera performance. For one thing, AOSP took about 1-2 seconds to snap a shot, whereas the TW rom (which I now have loaded) was pretty much instantaneous. The quality of the photos was lacking on the AOSP rom as well.
Yeah that would be awesome to have a TW camera version on AOSP, because I really do like everything else about AOSP.

You aren't alone.
I loved using aokp by task but unfortunately the camera was sluggish and slow compared to tw camera.
So I switched over to cleanrom which is essentially stock with all the bloatware gone. Thankfully scott was able to make it happen. Even now, I am using tw camera. I could care less all the features in tw camera but the quality and speed are very nice compared to aokp's.
one of the reasons I'm sticking with a TW rom.
As much as i love the camera on TW, I just can't stand the legginess on tw.

There is no comparison

AOSP camera has and will always be garbage. That's the only thing that keeps me coming back to TW or any stock rom on my devices. it just so awful, there's really no comparison between any stock rom camera and the garbage AOSP camera.

Try flashing the Google Play edition ROM, camera app is flawless. It literally takes pictures just as good as the touch wiz camera. And you get working photosphere

What ROM is this? I would just like the camera app to compare.
Ignore-
thought one of the previous pages was the last page...my question has already been answered
You can download and install the Nexus Experience camera (without ROOT may I add) on your stock rom. It works perfectly. I really love the fact that I can use my TW camera and when I feel like using PhotoSphere or something I can just open the other camera. You can download the file in the link below. Just installs like any other APK

::grabs popcorn:: i'm watching that thread
The aosp camera takes just as good of quality photos as the touchwiz variant. If you doubt this statement then show me proof. I use cm10.1 on this device and I've got a pretty good knack for photography owning a nicer Sony nex.. So understanding the settings and your environment is most important to capturing a good photo.
Guys, don't believe the fluff around the touchwiz camera, its not any better - its the same hardware and that's what matters.

So what youre saying is that I will get the same exact picture with either camera? I have tested the newer AOSP cameras and it has gotten better but I think on a few modes, like for example night mode, pictures do come out better on TW. Please clarify this because im itching to stay on AOSP and the camera is one of the biggest falls for me to stay on TW.

Any comparison must include not only sample pictures/video but also account for the user experience while in the camera app. If AOSP cameras take longer to focus and snap pictures, that means the experience using the camera is worse than on TW, even if the actual pictures are equal in quality. It's all subjective anyway. (objective? I always mix those two up)
Comparing the two is like trying to compare SLCD to Super AMOLED screens. You will never ever get everyone to agree one is better than the other and the debates will go on and on.
I am considering buying a Mini and I would like to ask, if there was a camera update thats targeting the actual photo quality? I red that there was some functions update, but did this improved the photos? All sample photos I saw on reviews were not much good, so I am interested in this.
Thanks
When I first received my maxx the photo quality was hit or miss. After the initial camera update the quality is very consistent. Just be sure that your lighting is good and your hand is steady. I think that many people expect these tiny cameras to be able to take excellent pictures under any circumstance. This is never going to happen.

Thanks, the camera update is that from Play store or it is a new android build? If so, can this be now taken and not kitkat?
It was the first or second ROM update that came through. The app seems to have added features like the ability to select a point of focus or exposure. That has proven to be a useful feature too.

Low light compared to iPhone s4 is still not good.

Here are a few I took today in HDR and not HDR. I think the colors are rich and you can see a lot of contrast.
Hmm there must be compression on this forum. They appear much sharper on my computer.

Interesting would be to try to photo the same scene before and after camera update...
as shipped my moto maxx took horrible pictures. I wasn't on the 4.2.2 camera update long enough to get a good sample, but the pics are much better after the kitkat upgrade (which may have been improvements from camera update)
X users are getting even better low light performance after this last update they got so I would expect the ultra line will also see an improvement soon.

Try Focal camera in play store. May have a few issues but for more tweaking it's nice. Also love aviary for photo editing or snapseed

Hi guys,
I noticed that when I take pictures with google camera App, they are Dithered!
Compared to my Stock Camera App and compared to Focal camera App it's very noticeable!
I like google's camera, but it's a shame if this problem exist in other devices too...
So I've got Galaxy S4 (i9500) and I'm running WanamLite V4 - 4.4.2, but I just want to check with you guys if
this problem exist on your devices too...
This is how it looks on my camera apps
look at the sky, can you see the Dithering in colors?
Please let me know if you have this problem too...
Cheers
:fingers-crossed:
That would be up to Google to fix, I personally would stick with the Samsung camera, the image looks allot better.

Thanks, as for now, I'm back to Samsung camera...
Pity, I like google's minimalistic UI... and Lens blur is cool too...
Thanks!
It is, it makes a huge difference on the Nexus 5 but in upcoming updates just try and see if the image has the same problem.

I'm a bit disappointed as there is lots of noise in the 13mp camera and the pictures are very grainy. But for the price it's pretty good.

You're not necessarily doing anything wrong. You probably need to look at your lighting, you're ISO settings, etc. It isn't the best performer in low light conditions but if you muck around with it a bit you can get some awesome shots out of it.

I have my ISO set at auto and fine set to 100%. I took some photos outside on overcast day and when I zoom in it's gaining. Looks good otherwise.
